This is for all the music geeks out there!
I don't know how far it will get, but it should be fun. Standard quiz form- one person asks a question about the music in the movie trilogy, and the person with the correct answer gets to ask the next question. I'll start.
What is the name of the violin-like instrument that plays the Rohan theme?
The Perky Ent
03-05-2004, 06:27 PM
Um...the fiddle?
Mithisilien
03-05-2004, 07:42 PM

The Perky Ent
03-05-2004, 08:04 PM

Mithisilien
03-05-2004, 08:10 PM
You were closer with the fiddle...if you have the special edition of TTT soundtrack it's in the booklet...

It's the Hardinger fiddle.
Mithisilien
03-06-2004, 09:13 PM
Estelyn's got it! It's actually spelled Hardanger, but it was spelled wrong in the soundtrack booklet, so that answer's fine.
Estelyn Telcontar
03-07-2004, 07:04 AM
Which flute player is a featured soloist on the soundtrack?
Lindir
03-09-2004, 04:18 PM
James Galway
Estelyn Telcontar
03-10-2004, 01:52 AM
That's the right person, Lindir - Sir James Galway, to be precise. Go ahead with the next question.
Lindir
03-10-2004, 04:31 PM
Who was the singer who featured in the song, "The End of All Things, "Return of the King", and "Twilight and Shadow"?
Mithisilien
03-11-2004, 07:11 PM
Renee Fleming was featured in all three, and The Return Of The King also featured Viggo Mortensen
Lindir
03-12-2004, 03:49 PM
That's correct. Your turn.
Estelyn Telcontar
03-18-2004, 10:48 AM
Mithisilien, are you out there somewhere? We'd love to get a new question from you!
Mithisilien
03-21-2004, 02:11 PM
I'm sorry! Just been insanely busy all week. *sigh*. Ok.

I was just lucky to be online, and have the Soundtracks nearby. ;)
Who sang the song Aníron?
Estelyn Telcontar
03-22-2004, 02:18 AM
Enya not only sang the song, she also composed it.
NightKnight
03-22-2004, 10:13 AM
But she didn't write the lyrics. ;) Your turn. :)
Estelyn Telcontar
03-22-2004, 02:05 PM
Which song's lyrics are written in both Quenya and Sindarin?
Lament for Gandalf in Fellowship of the Ring
Estelyn Telcontar
03-28-2004, 02:16 PM
That's right, Kath - go ahead with a new question!
Oh no! I didn't realise I would actually have to ask a question!
Well here goes, be warned it is easy.
Who translated the words in The Propechy?
symestreem
03-28-2004, 04:33 PM
I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but is it David Salo?
Mithisilien
03-28-2004, 04:38 PM
If you mean who adapted it for the soundtrack and (apparently) supplied the translation for the sheet music, would it be Phillipa Boyens?
Well I was only looking for the simple answer.
Soz for the confusion but Symestreem has it.

What key is "Evenstar" in?
Lindir
04-04-2004, 08:17 AM
E flat?
Mithisilien
04-04-2004, 03:54 PM
E flat what? E flat tomatos? E flat chairs? Actually, it's not E flat anything, so try again. ( but think about what I said :D )
Brinniel
04-04-2004, 04:05 PM
Hmm... is it A flat Major?
Mithisilien
04-07-2004, 03:03 PM
You've got the right idea about what I was saying, but that's incorrect. Try looking at the sheet music....
Estelyn Telcontar
04-07-2004, 03:14 PM
Are there people who have the sheet music and can answer? Unfortunately, I don't and therefore can't...

I just looked; In the music book I have, Evenstar key signature shows one sharp. Which means, key of G. Since I just bought the books I have yet to play it however.
Mithisilien
04-09-2004, 01:44 PM
ahhhhhhhhh, no. it is not in G MAJOR or G MINOR!!!! But you are relatively close... :p
Estelyn Telcontar
04-09-2004, 02:07 PM
As a musician, I would say that key signatures of sound tracks make for problematic questions - it is very likely that a piece will be printed in a different key signature than it is played on the CD, and it may even be released in several different versions, possibly in different keys, depending on the relative difficulty of the piece. Either we keep guessing until we chance to get it right, or you might just want to give us the answer for which you are looking and post a question that has a more definite answer...
Mithisilien
04-09-2004, 02:23 PM
I understand your point, but I took the liberty of comparing the movie, soundtrack, and sheet music versions and found them to be all in the same key signature. There aren't multiple editions considering the easy key signature the movie version is in. I'm not trying to trick anyone here ...but seeing how no one seems to be getting this, I'll give the answer. The key has one sharp, indicating G major, but it begins and ends on a minor triad, which tells us that it has to be in a minor key, so it is in the key of E MINOR! (c'mon guys, relative minor, three half-steps down...)
Mithisilien
04-09-2004, 02:33 PM
Oh yeah, new question. What singer is featured in the song "Breath of Life"?
symestreem
04-09-2004, 07:50 PM
Ms. Sheila Chandra, I believe.
Mithisilien
04-09-2004, 10:00 PM
You are indeed correct.
Mithisilien
04-15-2004, 06:57 PM

symestreem
04-19-2004, 11:17 AM
OK, OK, that was a justified poke. The Killer Rabbit will remain in his cage.
Lesse... when Gandalf's wagon was traveling over the bridge in Hobbiton, what instrument was used in that part of the score but later removed?
The half-elven
04-20-2004, 06:06 PM
Um...was it the Norwegian Fiddle?
symestreem
04-20-2004, 06:44 PM
Nope. The Norwegian fiddle was used in the Two Towers.
The half-elven
04-20-2004, 06:48 PM
Ooops, I mean the regular fiddle AKA the violin.
symestreem
04-22-2004, 07:59 PM

Lindir
04-25-2004, 07:40 AM
The musette? (French accordion)
symestreem
04-25-2004, 12:15 PM
Just the regular accordian, actually. Go ahead.
Lindir
04-25-2004, 04:13 PM
(This'll test you.)
What NZ war chant did the Uruk-Hai stuntees do between takes of Helm's Deep?
(Hint: It's on the Special Extended 2 Towers. "Warriors of the 3rd Age" or something like that.)
symestreem
04-25-2004, 06:33 PM
Something about turning off the rain tower?
Lindir
04-26-2004, 02:29 PM
Nope. It's a title.
But I'm gonna change the question because it doesn't have that much to do with the music. Should I just do that?
symestreem
04-26-2004, 04:03 PM
Maori haka?
Lindir
04-27-2004, 03:01 PM

symestreem
04-29-2004, 08:13 PM
What is the first instrument heard on "The King of the Golden Hall" and "Evenstar"? (It's not the same one.) Second part is a trick question!
The half-elven
04-29-2004, 08:16 PM
Sorry, This is not a quiz question...=) I'm looking for a hardanger Fiddle. Does anybody know where I can get a Hardanger Fiddle, or a better place to look for one?
Thanks!

Welcome to the Downs, the half-elven. :)
Since this forum is for Quiz Games, we tend to avoid general discussion here. You'd probably be better off raising your question on one of the threads dealing with the film scores in the Movies forum.
Why not try this one: Lord of the Rings Soundtracks: Discuss (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=9866)
Now, back to the game ...
The half-elven
04-30-2004, 04:56 AM
Sorry About that...
Is it Frenchhorn and then voice (Isabel Bayakdarian)?
symestreem
04-30-2004, 01:57 PM
I'm not sure if it's a French horn. "Horn" and "voice" was what I was looking for. Take the thread, and welcome to the Downs!

symestreem
05-03-2004, 06:57 PM
I'm going to give the thread to Lindir. I just piggypacked off of his (correct) answer, and I feel guilty about that. Lindir, the thread is yours!!
Lindir
05-04-2004, 02:28 PM
OH! That's so nice! :p
OK: What instrument did was used for one of Gollum's themes, and was also used in The Shire?
