View Full Version : LotR sayings can fit any where!

I was recently at a friend`s house watching FotR. We were eating those little cup-cake things that come in individually wrapped packages. I couldn`t get one open, so my friend waved her hands around it and said, " Mellon!", in a deep voice that sounded something like Gandy`s. It was lame yet funny. (Something only an LotR obsessed person would understand.) Little things like this often pop up when I`m with friends. Do you guys/girls ever do things like this? Maybe my friends and I are just weird. :p

And I thought that I was the only person who did the 'Mellon' thing. Tee hee, you do it too? Well, being that I am very odd, that might not be a good thing for you, however.
But I do quote LOTR, POTC, Matrix, and Star Wars all the time, and pointlessly too... snrk. How about this one? Whenever you get something new, in your best Gollum voice, you go "My prrrrrreciousssssssss. It came to me, my own, my love..." Or, when your sister does something new, and well, something that you didn't expect "The world is changed..."
And how about this? You're with your best friends going to Youth Quake, and your youth group leader gets so fed up with hearing FOTR that she makes you quote Bible verses, being as you have just quoted all of the LOTR prologue, complete with sound effects, and were going into the Shire scenes too... She did get rather annoyed once we made it to Bilbo's birthday party... and forced us to shut up, snrk...

Of course, every day. I say 'Mellon' at my work when the door closes in front of me and refuses to budge (You know those automatic doors? Foul creations so they are).
My other favourite is when I'm cooking bacon. When else do you get to utter the single best line in the entire movie trilogy?
"NICE CRISPY BACON!" (Oh Brandybuck you crack me up!)

My prrrreciuosssssss, that's one of my favourites. An other: whenever I hear about mushrooms i hear a little voice saying (in a scottish accent) Ah, mushrooms. I'm not that good at imitating it though, so most often I keep quiet.

I say "My precious" all the time! Not exactly. :D There are certain times I really feel like Gollum, then I'll grab something I like and say in a phony Gollum-voice, "My preciousss." I scare myself at times.

I like the "my precious". I do it all the time. I have never tried the Mellon thing though. Maybe I should, and see if anyone understands it.
I have another one. Some places where I live, the roads aren't too broad, and if a car comes we have to get off it. So when I'm walking with people along the road when a car comes, you'll hear me "Get off the road!" in a Frodoish style. Kind of funny. :D

The one I find myself doing alot is the Gandalf line.
"No, just Tea!"
It's always good. :)

I do the "mellon" thing with automatic doors all the time; when I was younger I used to say "Open Sesame!" can you tell I read stories from "The Arabian Nights?" :)
Eomer of the Rohirrim
04-26-2004, 08:42 AM
Yes, Gandalf's 'tea' line is another oft quoted line in my house.
As is "Not listening!" accompanied by Gollum's trademarked hands-on-ears routine! (whenever someone reminds me of something unpleasant)
Olorin_TLA
04-26-2004, 08:54 AM
I'm not so much of a mellon man...with me, I'm usually in a mock-angry-Gandalf mood when the key won't fit properly in a door or whatever, so I go "Edro, edro! Open, open!" One of my fav Moria lines too. :)
Eomer of the Rohirrim
04-26-2004, 09:09 AM
Olorin, you have just reminded me that it is "edro!" that I say too, not "mellon". I got confused.
Whenever I see someone run I shout at them "Noro lim, Asfaloth!" :D

When we play games, I do Saruman: we must join with him, (fill in the blank), we must join with the green team.
And I used to do the Open Seseme to doors, until I fell in love with mellon, and edro.
The newest one is to shout 'DARO' at anyone who comes close to me. Meaning halt, of course.
And I do nora lim all the time... tee hee.
I also use 'And all shall love me and despair' whenever my sibling are bugging me... snrk.

Whenever I'm playing in an organized sport (like soccer or basketball) I always shout "Khazad! Khazad-aimenu! Baruk-khazad!" at the opposing player I happen to be trying to steal the ball from. If I'm pressed for time I just shout "Khazad-aimenu!" In track I always yell "Noro lim, (insert name), noro lim!"
I've just started doing this one: whenever I have a pop quiz in a class I say "Wicked, tricksy, false (insert teacher's name)! You promissssed us that we wouldn't have a quiz; gollum, gollum! We hates you, we hates you forever!" Needless to say, that last part is usually muttered under my breath. ;) Of course I also do the "My Prrrreciousssss" thing all the time; for some reason it seems to annoy my friends. I almost forgot about this one: my English teacher decided to switch the seating arrangement in his room, and once everyone had found their new spot and sat down I said (in my best Galadriel voice), "The world is changed." Unfortunately, not that many people got it, or they just gave me weird looks. Oh well, at least my totally-obsessed-with-LotR-slightly-a-Leggy-bopper-friend got it. :D

I think everyone does the 'my precious' thing!! At least I do. I like the 'You shall not pass!' line from Moria, "Mutton yesterday, mutton today, and blimey, if it don't look like mutton again tomorrow," I say in the lunch line a lot, and my all time favorite LOTR quotes are of course "Mercy," cried Gandalf, "What more do you what to know?""The names of all the stars and of all living things and whole history of Middle-earth and Over-heaven and of the Sundering Seas," laughed Pippin, "Of course! What less?" and 'The road goes ever on...' song.

On friday, my english teacher was gone, and they, for some inane reason, did not send a substitute, and so it was thirty teenagers with no supervision for an hour.
Two weirdos were talking about asking a neighboring teacher about it, but I got up and said threateningly:
"Gondor has no Sub, Gondor needs no Sub."
They looked at me funny, but my friend laughed because she knew.
Also, I talk in a smeagol voice all the time, and yell at people to:
"Get thee gone and take thy due place!"
Fun times.

I am actually blessed with a fair circle of folk who enjoy LOTR, to a greater or lesser degree.
One day the humorous teasing had risen to a rather intense pitch, and my at my husband's repartee I was vanquished. So I curled up on the couch and whimpered: "Cruel men hurtss uss. Masster betrays uss!" It got a good general laugh.
*All* the men in the group are fishermen; you can imagine; 'nough said. Except that i am not overly fond of fisssh myself. "Give me chipss now, and keep nassssty fissssh."
When discussing something nassty: "And they doesn't taste very good, does they preciouss?"

No I do the same thing. I love to randomly quote Lotr. I forget what the person said, but it was something about a long time and I quoted Leggy from the books saying "500 times have the red leave fallen in Mirkwood, in my home, since then and but a little while does that seem to us." Yeah, I tend to get weird looks...

I like "What is this new devilry?" when receiving some new chore or assignment. And alterations of Pippin's line "...mission...quest...thing." That one's very versitile, I love it. ^__^
Another favorite (though I get in trouble for saying to my brother) is "You don't have any friends! Nobody likes you!" Can be used with or without Gollum-type voice.

I can usually connect almost anything to Tolkien. Just a few examples: When the doors of a train were about to open, I said "Open the gate!". Or when my mum spoke of something that was a few years younger than her, it just had to be "Very good year, almost as old as I am!". I also call my girlfriend "My Precious". :p

Heh, I do that *sometimes* too. Okay, a lot! ;)
Today, I dropped my socks on the ground before I went downstairs so that I could go brush my teeth. When I came back, they were gone. When I hunted them down, I found my sister wearing them. (Don't worry, there IS a point to this little story...it is coming...). She said she thought I dropped them and I said, (here it is) "Not idly do the socks of Sirithheruwen's room fall!" Pointlessness is good. Whenever a sibling snitches sometihng of mine, I do this: "Surrender the *fill in blank with whatever* in a phony wraith tone. Or whenever a friend comes over, in a Galadriel voice "Welcome *whoever* of the Shire *or wherever*. One who has seen the eye!"
Yeah, I am rather odd. And pointless, but my best friend copywrited that word.... erk...
I quote randomly! It's fun. Are you frightened?

There's the ever fun: "That is no orc horn." when someone blows their nose.
"Keep up Gimli!" when your friends lag behind.
"You're late." is often appropriate (or in Elvish "Le abdoleth.")
"Flee! Flee for your lives!" is always fun, especially when there's no real reason to say it.
"What's taters precious, eh? What's taters?", or whatever food it is at the time.
"*wherever* *whoever you're with*, is it left of right?"
My prom dress had big princess sleeves, like Galadriel, so when my mommy was fixing the hem I would wave my arms around: "All shall love me and despair."
That's all I can thinkg of now. I'll be back though.

Hissing "We wantss it!!" in a Gollum-esque voice always works for me. Doesn't matter WHAT we wants, it's the tone that counts. It freaks people out, which is always fun.
I also enjoy saying "Where... is... Gan...dalf?" in my hokey Celeborn/William Shadner voice, just to make my sister laugh.
Once I actually said "Mae govannen, mellon" when someone offered me a slice of melon. They gave me a strange look. *sniff sniff* No one understands me!!!
Oh yeah, and this isn't a LOTR saying, but imitating Figwit can be really fun. Just sit really still and straight, and flare your eyebrows every three seconds or so. Make note of all the weird glances you get. I dare you.

I've given someone Gandalf's "good morning" rap from The Hobbit...
What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not, or that you feel good this morning, or that it is a morning to be good on?
Needless to say, she didn't answer: "All of them at once, and a fine morning for smoking a pipe into the bargain!" She kinda didn't understand it...*sigh* we Tolkienites really must form our own country...

I quote Lotr a lot, but right now the only thing that comes to mind (and apropriately, too) is the "Filthy pop-ups! Wicked , trickssy, falssse! Curse them! We hates them, we hates them forever!" OT: there's a pop-up that keeps coming up asking me if I want to get rid of pop-ups! I mean, seriously... How tricksy can you get?
btw - I was on another, non-lotr related forum a few days ago, and someone said she was getting 'gollumic' because of a link that was not working. I was about to ask her if she knows the 'Downs and this thread:http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=5284
But then I figured that Lotr had become so much of a mainstream thingy, that these sayings probably entered into spoken language already. How cool is this? This is language in the making!

I was sitting in the doorway @ school (working on a group project) and someone tried to get out. I sat up (my friend was tickling me, so I was on my back) and said "You cannot pass!" in my best Gandalf voice. Then I was called a geek, and the world was happy. Incidentally, the poor guy who was trying to exit hung from a tall ledge (think Bridge of Khazad-Dûm) and shouted "Fly, you fools!" a few months earlier.
Two examples in one post! Boy, do I feel special.
I also talk to my horse in Quenya a lot. Of course I've used "my precioussss;" it's quite versatile. I tend to use it when stealing pencils, flip-flops, foot, etc. from my best (and LotR-loving) friend. I need to go re-read the books and write down all the quotable stuff.

When cooking, especially grilling out, I ask about the accompanying dishes.
"What I wouldn't give for some nice taters!" *and especially if someone looks at me funny:*"...PO-TAY-TOES!"

What I wouldn't give for some nice taters!" *and especially if someone looks at me funny:*"...PO-TAY-TOES!
OMG i do the potatoes thing all the time!! like when someone doesn't understand something you said (it doesn't have to be lotr related though no one understands me when i get tolkienish anyway) you lean in really close to their face and explain, "po-TA-toes!" and then go back to whatever you were doing without further comment. Try it! but its REALLY hard to keep a straight face. Usually you burst out laughing in their face and spray spit all over them.
hmm... i use lotr quotes all the time. like when my family's going on a trip or something and we're all spazzing at the last moment packing and stuff, I (half way out the door) lean back in and cry, "Forth Eorlingas!" and then go down the steps humming "the road goes ever on and on.."
and one time, during a sleepover when the lights went out and i was trying to get a flashlight to work, I started banging it and saying, "Aiya earendil elenion ancalima!" most insistently, but my friend did not get it.
Also when you're cooking something its fun to shout out "FRY YOU FOOLS!!!" at random intervals.

I do a lot of stuff.... like saying LOTS AND LOTS of Gollum quotes. One thing about that is that I can do it really well (or so people say) so I always friek people out when I do that.
Another thing my cousin (firefoot) and I do a lot is sing "Hey! Ho! To the bottle I go!...." and that usually frieks people out. Nobody gets our "strange" obsession!
Another thing I do is say the "You shall not pass!" when I don't want someone to come into my room. That usually keeps my annoying siblings away.
I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure I will later! :D

Hmm...all very good!
Sometimes, if I'm upset, and talking to someone, I say, "Yea, I will drink thy blood gladly", quoting Turin Turambar's sword. It gets weird looks.
Hm...lots of things that Merry and Pippin say in FOTR are good quotes; nice and random, too.
It's also fun to grab your siblings friends as they walk by your room, pull them in and say, "Are you frightened? Not nearly enough!" and push them back out.
I like to quote Bilbo's birthday speech; usually under my breath, though.
"Get thee gone and take thy due place" is excellent! I love using it.
And of course there is talking to animals (and people) in Sindarin and Quenya.
It's not really a quote, but you say random things that, in context, are beautiful pieces of advice, like, "Many are the strange chances of the world and helps oft shall come from the hands of the weak when the Wise falter.", but on their own, well...are random.
And, of course, if someone's insulting me, I growl and say, "my house has not earn such names from any elf, be he king or no". It shuts people up quite nicely.
I was at the mall the other day, and someone sitting behind me in the food court had chinese food. I turned around and said, " Is it nice, my preciousss? Is it juicy? Is it scrumtiously crunchable?" :D I scared him.
The twinkie game, the one where you replace certain words in LOTR quotes with 'twinkie', or 'pants' is good for freaking people out...
This isn't really a quote, but seeing Bakishi's version of Bilbo made me say, "Hm...so Bilbo's been dealing in Crack again.." He's SO TWITCHY in Bakishi's movie! -growls-
This isn't a quote either, but...the first time my friend saw TTT, when Gandalf casts back the grey robes and reveals himself as Gandy the White, she yelled, "oh my God, it's Jesus!"
More as they, well, appear in life, I suppose.

on IM just now, I had to get up and get another cookie (hehe..) so i said "brb one sec" and then as an afterthought, added "I'm diminishing and going into the west, if u want to know" when i got back, I was trying to think of a clever quote to use, but I couldnt think of anything. Help, anyone? :p Yeah and then my friends and I were talking about how we've been lazing around all week eating cookies/brownies/candy and stuff, so in a fit of insanity, i typed in, "*looks at butt* It's getting heavier, Sam..." which got many amusing reactions. :D i love keeping my friends awake.
(and no I don't support eating disorders, like i said I was randomly being crazy)

I'm sadly more lilely to start spewing something in Elvish and have people look at me like I'm nuts when they ask what language and I say Quenya. "Where did you learn Kenyan?" "No, QUENYA! And it's only some things..."

How about "Wherever I have been I am back"? Gandalf tells that to Merry and Pippin when they ask him where he was.
I said "Open in the name of Mordor" when I was locked out of the house once...and I love "Forth Eorlingas!"

"Open In The Name of Mordor" is great to use when you get stuck outside of anywhere...
Has anyone used, "Aiya Elenion Ancalima!" when using a flashlight? It's great; freaks out other people in the campground when you yell it

All my flashlights have dead batteries, alas, but I know I've used "Aiya Elenion Ancalima!" before for something...can't remember what it was. Maybe just randomly. And yay, this'll be my 100th post!

I don't exactly know, because I am only halfway through elvish lessons, but the first two words are "Hail Earendil" and "ancalima" is "great light-giver" so it's praising the star. :D

"Aiya Eärendil elenion ancalima!" means "Hail Eärendil brightest of the stars!"

I am also half way through my elvish lessons at councilofelrond.com. Where are you taking them, Lady Snickerdoodle? ;)

Has anyone used, "Aiya Elenion Ancalima!" when using a flashlight?
No but if I see a nasty spider, I shout "Aiya Eärendil Elenion Ancalima" and drop a heavy book on it. Yeah, not so courteous but I'm afraid of those eight-legged creatures.
Another my all-time favourite is very useful when dealing with kids. "Show them no mercy for you shall receive none!"
Then there's of course "Who enters my domain?" when someone enters my room. :)

I've used "Aiya Earendil Elenion Ancalime" before. Usually it accompanies a banging of a flashlight on a tree or some other appropriate surface.
Another one I use is "Get thee gone and take thy due place" to get people to leave me alone. It usually works, most likely because of the middle-late english pronouns.
Ah, middle-late english pronouns. Those little buggers have gotten me out of some pretty tight spaces.

After my grade 8 graduation a bunch of us went to a restaurant and everyone was giving speaches. I got up and quoted Bilbo;
" I know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like half of you half as well as you deserve"
All my friends got a look on thier face like "I should of known she would say that", cause they all know I love LOTR. hehehe

When being overloaded with homework:
"Why do you lay these troubles on an already troubled mind?" (I really have said that, quite loudly, to a teacher)
My, Elennar, so have I!
My friend and I say " You're hopeless. Go to sleep!" to each other whenever the things we say become so senseless, or when we just feel like it.
Every night, I look for the planet Venus and say, dramatically, "Aiya Earendil elenion ancalima." Too bad nobody's been giving me weird stares.
I have also used the line " Do you remember when we first met?" line in Sindarin during an emotional talk with somebody.
And the latest LotR line I have used came from Eowyn: "Alas, not me, lord. Shadow lies on me still. Look not to me for healing." Yes, that's my sad life. I'm Eowyn for the moment. :(

*This isn't a quote either, but...the first time my friend saw TTT, when Gandalf casts back the grey robes and reveals himself as Gandy the White, she yelled, "oh my God, it's Jesus!"*
Roflmao!!!!!! :D Thanks, I needed that. :D I personally love to use Gollum quotes or at least speak in his voice; I often receive interesting looks.

I, as I've said before, like to take quotes from every which way of Tolkien's work. It's fun; though the Gollum impressions are my favorite to do, I haven't been doing them as much lately. Mostly it's been stuff like, " 'E had a queer look about 'im..." when describing someone...
Or I'll recite some of Gaffer Gamgee's advice; but no one wants to hear it...oh well.
And I've harrased my siblings by calling them Figwit and telling them to leave whereever I am. They don't listen.

I just barely got back from a vacation to California. We drove there and back again (a 13 hour drive.) On our way back I was muttering to myself in English, and my parents were convinced I was speaking elvish. ;)
