View Full Version : A More challenging Name Game
Tuor of Gondolin
07-27-2004, 06:07 PM
How about a Name Game with a more difficult rule?
1) Whoever starts a game round determines how that round is limited.
For example: if a round starts with Feanor, then only elf names can be used.
If with Bree, then only place names, if with Grisnakh, then only baddies, etc. The starter of the round could, if necessary, stipulate the limiting factor.
2) Other then that, the same rule, next name begins with the last letter
of the word before.
3) Last one to post a correct answer with no further correct
responses for say (three days? if that's a good limiting time, the exact time could be up for discussion) is deemed to have won that round and can start a new round.
4) Nicknames of characters are permitted (ex. Pippin and Peregrin can both be used).
5) Titles of characters are permitted (ex. both Galadriel and Lady of the Wood).
Well, if there's interest, how about starting with a real SB:
Lobelia
The Saucepan Man
07-27-2004, 07:32 PM
OK, I'll bite. :)
Andwise
I'm assuming the topic is Hobbits' names generally, rather than just female Hobbits' names (as otherwise I'm stumped).
And, by the way, three days sounds good to me.

Esmeralda.
Tuor of Gondolin
07-27-2004, 07:39 PM
Yep. Hobbits. Good or bad, male or female, young or old, etc.......
(had to look up Andwise).
here's a thought. Should both the nickname and name of a hobbit be permitted (that is, Merry and Meriadoc)?
Elanor.
Daughter of the nassty, fat hobbit.
The Perky Ent
07-27-2004, 08:06 PM
So, now I have to give a hobbit name, so how about the mother of Elanor: Rosie

That is a hard one! But I've got one! Andy, Sam's uncle!
symestreem
07-27-2004, 08:23 PM
Are repeats okay?
Tuor of Gondolin
07-27-2004, 08:27 PM
By "repeats" if you mean the identical name, I don't think so. otherwise a round would never end. I know "Andy" is tough, but I may have an acceptable name.
But if challenged, it's open to removal.
How about "Young Tom Cotton"? In The scouring of the Shire he's mentioned as one of Farmer Cotton's children by that appelation.
Oh, and nicknames are okay. In the same round, for example, Merry and Meriadoc could be used.
By the by, an interesting category in the future could be women/girls.
The Perky Ent
07-27-2004, 08:29 PM
Sorry about that! I'll try not to do it again. Anyways, how about Nob, one of the servants of Barliman Butterbur
Tuor of Gondolin
07-27-2004, 08:47 PM
What's to be sorry about? A good question. :)
I'd love to say "Bingo", but JRRT (thankfully) changed that plot person.

Uh Oh. Another "Y".
The saucepan man is tricksey. We musn't play the riddle game with him, precious.
Hmm. This will take some thought. Has TSM won the first round? Stay tuned!
The Perky Ent
07-27-2004, 10:16 PM
Yes, Saucepan is quite clever, but I think I have a solution. I don't know if this works, so please tell me if it doesn't! Young Master, the title the Innkeeper gave to Frodo at first glace. If this doesn't work, please say so!
Thorongil
07-28-2004, 05:01 AM
If it works, here is the next one:
Rorimac
The Saucepan Man
07-28-2004, 05:11 AM
Hmm, since the category is Hobbit names, I am not sure that titles should be allowed.
However, a name previxed with "young" would be acceptable, provided that it is used within the text. Now, I'm sure that there must be a few of those ...

The Perky Ent
07-29-2004, 11:14 AM
Wait, Tuor, isn't that what Firefoot already said, Nick Cotton? Hmm...K's. Without Kalimac, there really isn't anything else. There's Kuduk, the Westron name for Hobbits, but it doesn't specify a person! I think you're the stumper Firefoot!
Tuor of Gondolin
07-29-2004, 11:23 AM
Okay. If interested, Firefoot can start a new round. Just be sure to specify the category.
The trick may be to make it somewhat specific but yet broad enough to be a game for a while. For example, I might have made the above category something like "hobbit nouns", although that sounds awful, to include place names, titles, and hobbit names.
Firefoot
07-29-2004, 11:57 AM
Ok, the new category is Places not in Middle-earth.

Great. That's what I thought it probably was. So what about:

Tuor of Gondolin
07-29-2004, 10:39 PM
Umm. This gets a bit tricky, may need The Saucepan Man to arbitrate.
1--- "Probably" Beleriand is part of Middle-earth, but it could be too complicated to negate the above guess, and Beleriand after the First Age (mostly) isn't.
2--- "Rana" was used before.
3--- I believe various names for something/someone should be allowed.
Perhaps a solution is not to allow more Beleriand references, to ignore double Rana use, and continue??????????

Beleriand was part of Middle-earth before it sunk.
Please try to spot the double use of words, since the previous last letter should remain open. Otherwise it's unfair on the previous poster who might otherwise be able to claim victory.
And, yes, alternative names are allowed, since this gives the game more scope ...
... which allows me to post Narrow Ice, another name for the Helcaraxe.

(Had to do a search to make sure it's a female name.
Amaranth Brandybuck
Aunt of Frodo Baggins. Amaranth Brandybuck was born in 2904. She was the daughter of Gorbadoc Brandybuck and Mirabella Took Brandybuck. Amaranth had an older brother Rory who was the grandfather of Merry Brandybuck. She also had five younger siblings: Saradas, Dodinas, Asphodel, Dinodas, and Primula, mother of Frodo. Amaranth Brandybuck died in 2998.
Etymology:
An amaranth is an annual plant with showy purple or crimson flowers. It is also a poetic term for a flower that never fades.

Yeah, that's true. There are lots of months, but unfortunatly, they all end in E, which doesn't help. So, I think I need to extend the criteria. This will extend it slightly, but not a lot. Now, It's time and calanders, so ages, months, seasons, and special calender dates are now acceptable!

The Saucepan Man
09-07-2004, 06:07 PM
I predict this category will take a while to burn out!Yes, it's not really working is it, as the category (loosely interpreted, as it has been) basically allows people to name anything in Middle-earth which has more than one name ... which is practically everything in Middle-earth!
So, to prevent this category going on for another 10 pages, I'm going to have to get tough and exclude any name which is a principle name or a translation of a principal name (given that neither really counts as a nickname or an alias).
Which means that Grond is out, as it was, after all the weapon's name. Sorry Perky. :(
Actually, the same goes for Elder King and Last King of the Second Line, which are both titles rather than nicknames or aliases, but let's carry on with 'G' anyway.
Please folks, think whether your answer really is a nickname or an alias before posting. And if it's not, think of something else or don't post.
