I'm not sure if this thread belongs in novices and newcomers but I'll ask you all anyway!
ok, so it says in the prologue to the fellowship of the ring, that the prancing pony has been owned by the Butterbur family for a long time, as long as records say.

Does anybody know how long they've owned it for or just anything else about the Butterbur family.

I don't know anything about them so I hope somebody else does?!

I could be wrong, but I think that's about the only reference to the Butterbur history. I know, I know, it would be nice to have a whole section of the appendices about Bree and Butterbur but sadly it's not the case.

Isowen:Perhaps this thread belongs to the Books section -- they speculate on alot of topics redgarding these things...I've never thought of Butterbur too much and I've no reference to answer your inquiry. Does it even exist? I think it rare for specificities to surface for such minor characters. Forgive and correct me if I'm wrong.

From Encyclopedia of Arda: "An old family of Bree, that had kept the inn there, the Prancing Pony, for years beyond reckoning. The innkeeper at the time of the War of the Ring was Barliman Butterbur. " And that's all. That didn't really help at all...it seems that you have got interested in a very badly informed affair.

Other then the reference in the Prologue, I don’t think there is any mention of Butterbur’s family, not even wife or children in the books.

That is true of much more prominent families than the Butturburs...and if they are mentioned it is often only a reference to their demise. I mean Galadriel and Celeborn are about the only couple that survive all the way through the LOTR - and they split up at the end.;)
