How about making up our own definitions for archaic or unusual words we find in LotR et al?! (If you've read Douglas Adams' "Meaning of Liff" you know what I'm thinking of.) *thinks hard, trying to find a really fantastic starter that will knock everyone out with its clever wittiness - sigh!*
Oh well, maybe someone else has a great idea!

Yes, Rinberethiel, that's the idea. It will work best with unusual words.

The answer to "any" question in the Douglas Adams books is 42. How about for this group the answer to every question should be "Balrog"?

Estelyn Telcontar
01-22-2002, 01:50 AM
Well, the original idea was to make up definitions. So let's finally start it off - I've got one for ya'll. It's a LotR word, but the definition has to do with my favorite forum contributions.

balrog-winging (verb):
discussing, extensively and heatedly, issues of no practical importance, which cannot be resolved due to lack of conclusive proof for any given standpoint
(see also: angel-pinpoint-dancing)

OK, OK, don't you balrog-wingers out there stone me - it's just for fun, remember?!

Now, who'll try next?

arago (verb): (1) to measure a given distance with large and proud steps, while maintaining a kingly posture (aprox. synonyme: stride)
(2) to walk for long miles without tiring easily,as in: They arawent forty leagues and five in pursuit of their hobbit friends ere the fourth day ended.

Great idea - to make up a language from Tolkien words! Maybe we'll start using it too, and have others stare at us like we're mad!

Inspired by Feanor's post:

twotowerism: (to pull a twotowerism): 1. to reveal one's lack of knowledge on a matter by making false statements that you sell as absolute truths. (ex: They really pulled a twotowerism when they claimed Tolkien's books were racist.
2. to reveal oneself as a non fan of something in the midst of a group of devoted fans. (ex: Gee, you shouldn't have yelled 'Star Trek sucks' at that convention. That was a damned twotowerism and it was bound to get you in trouble.

EDIT: As it has been pointed out to me that my post has been misunderstood, I feel the need to explain it:

My definitions for
twotowerism allude to the same people that Feanor alluded to - the ones that campaigned against the release of TTT on the pretext of the title holding negative connotations smilies/rolleyes.gif . It's those people that reveal themselves as non fans, and reveal their own stupidity in the process. grey haven: A place where one would prefer to be and/or travel to, instead of staying in the original place.

hobbitism: Chronic shortness. Other symptoms include: Large, hairy feet, curly hair, large eyes, and a phobia of going outside one's own backyard. May also result in cuteness, in which case one should stay away from fangirls.

uruk-hai-ism: A liking of licking one's own blood off a blade, also worsening one's wound, by pushing the blade even further into one's body, and grouping together in large numbers in order to take over a large, usually foolproof building. (syn: terroristism, maniacism, bullyism)

EDIT: This post was originally put up as the beginning of a new thread, but if you read through the next few posts you'll see how and why it was quickly, and quite rightly, merged with Esty's brilliant thread from two years ago.

----------------------------

Everybody knows how important words were to Professor Tolkien. The names, places, and languages of Middle-Earth are a rich and wonderful storehouse of witty allusion, learned jests and low puns. Things like “Smaug” from the Old German verb ‘smugan’ which means “to squeeze through a small hole.” Or “Frodo” from ‘frodá’: “wise by experience.”

It seems to me that we, his most devoted followers, owe it to the Professor to pick up where he left off and to recover for ourselves the meanings of the names and words that he invented. What he did with the languages of the past, we should do with the languages of his works.

Let us create new words from those of the Professor, with which to describe things that currently lack a word of their own. For example:

sheorc, (she + orc) pron. sheYORK (noun): A hypothetical or speculative monster or creature; a person or concept that logic dictates should exist, but for which there is no empirical evidence.

Example: an honest lawyer; an exciting accountant; a good reason to hate The Lord of the Rings.

to balrog, pron. BAL-rog (verb): To seek unthinking vengeance upon those who have done you no harm; to absolutely lose it and rage about in a fury; “wigging out.”

Example: “I was so mad when the neighbors cut down their crabapple tree that I balrogged at them for three hours.”

legolass, pron. LEG-oh-lass (adjective): Attractive and capable, but not terribly perceptive or interesting; flaky, or like a bimbo (not necessarily pejorative).

Example: “Nicole Kidman gets more and more legolass every time I see her.”

frodosam: pron. Fro-DOH-sam (noun): A perfectly suited pair; two people so closely associated with one another that they seem one, and inseparable.

Example: “My grandparents are a real frodosam” or “Britney Spears and Hilary Duff are in danger of forming the world's first frodosam of bad taste.”

What other new words can we come up with?

I'm not sure if anyone has done this one yet.

Tom Bombadilloistic- (opposite of sadistic) 1) To cause others to experience great joy and happiness through the hearing of song and rhyme and lots of dancing about.
2) Extreme ecstatic exultant happiness, or obliviousness to anything of great evil.

EX. "That fellow on the table is very Tom Bombadilloistic at parties isn't he?"

Ugly - (adv.) condensed from "Uglukly", modifies verbs concerned with typically Orc-ish behavior. Ex: "Having slain a rider of the Mark at Helm's Deep, Smellybreath grinned ugly and brandished his orcish blade."

Ugluckily - (adv.) expanded from "Uglukly", modifies unexpected turns of Orcish good fortune. "Ugluckily for Grishnakh, the halflings' guards had been killed and they were totally defenseless."

403 (vb) - 1) to be banned. 2) to suffer the torment of not having to indulge in one's obsession.

I actually used this . . . in a PM, that is.

Well, I wish someone would 403 you.
