We've added another time waster to The Barrow-Downs: Middle-earth Magnets (http://www.barrowdowns.com/magnets) .

Give it a try and tell us here what you think of it.

Thanks!

I may have to create a Middle-earth Magnets Hall of Fame. I already have a first nominee:

That's great! I'll probably waste a lot of time on that...

BW, you must like Oddwen's! ;)

Oh yeah!

btw, if your name is on the first page of the Member List when sorted by reputation, then your name is in the Middle-earth Magnets wordlist!

"defenestrate d flamboyant Fordim Hedgethistle"! I'm not so sure I'm keen on this new time waster. . .funny as it is.

Well done again, oh great and might BW!

another time waster
So incredibly true. You wouldn't believe how long I had to wait before the word "to" came up... Awesome though, BW. This site keeps getting better (I would have hardly thought it possible). Thanks.

Hmm ... should I spend a few hours composing lengthy and articulate posts in the Books forum, or should I needlessly devote said time to concocting silly messages on the Sticky Board?

No contest! :D

Nice new feature, BW. :)

Btw Who are Richard Simmons and Gary Coleman?

Btw Who are Richard Simmons and Gary Coleman?
Richard Simmons is a very... odd... exercise guy. As for Gary Coleman... I think he's an actor, but my memory fails me.

Gary! (http://www.declicmag.com/html/28/file/f10.jpg)

B-W, I love the magnet board.

(Goes off to try and make a coherent sentence using "reverse-engineer", "afro" and "Wandlimb.")

BW, I love you forever for this. ;)

Do I get extra points for working Cthulhu and Richard Simmons into the same piece? :D

This is great! :D

I liked the daytime TV one: how hobbit seduced Maia: - Melian was Fatty Bolger's secret mistress
That was even more bizarre than Jerry Springer The Opera!!!

Gary Coleman? Wasn't he the little kid in Diff'rent Strokes?

Hee hee! This is so awesome! Nice one, BW!

Oddwen

There must be a word limit or something, because there are two blocks missing in my message.

"sightful!" should be
"insightful!"

and

"Mr. Pippin quietly moved Boromir the
king's accordion" should be

"Mr. Pippin quietly moved Boromir the disco
king's accordion"

HMM.

The Barrow-Wight

Hmm.... be careful when dragging near the edges. Tiles can just disappear over there, and before you know it your message is a word (or two) short!

Oddwen
10-11-2004, 06:59 PM
True, but they go transparent when not set. And "in" wasn't even near the edge.

Elennar Starfire

I just wasted half an hour on that...very amusing! I've always been able to waste hours playing with those little magnet word thingys...I once did that instead of paying attention in drama class, and I love drama class! I had to ask my teacher to move me to a desk where I couldn't see them...

"Mr T's trans-fatty secret society was pondering hero Fatty Bolger's flamboyant fancy to invent this quick tuna melt pyramid scheme (utopia indeed)"

Fun, thanks. :)

The Dead Marshes and The Blue Mountains won't burp Beruthiel!

Truer words were never spoken.

(This thing's prophetic or phrenetic or something...)

The Saucepan Man
10-12-2004, 04:26 PM
I don't know about prophetic (or phrenetic), but it's certainly addictive.

Question: Why is it that that last word you need to complete your message always takes about 50 clicks to come up, then comes up first time when you return next time? :D

Fun, fun, fun....

Another thing to fool around with at 2 in the morning.

But not tonight- I've done four already (the ones that say "tp"). That's quite enough wasted time for one evening.

Elennar Starfire

Dangerously addictive. I waste time reading them, and making them up...

The Barrow-Wight

I got up this morning and saw that there were 0 new magnets. Curious, I quickly made a new one to see if there was a problem. It didn't save! That would have stunk if I had just taken 10 minutes looking for a word! (Most of us do that. You can admit it!) After some tinkering with the database, in which time I did absolutely nothing I am aware of, it started working again!

If this or similar malfunction happens to you, please post a message here or send me an e-mail!

Thanks!

I must most humbly apologize for my latest piece of Magnet depravity.

If you see it, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Not as bad as me. I 've wasted quite a bit of time on it in the last couple days...& still haven't created one. :p

edit: in fact I just spent another 30 mins tonight...without anything to show for it ;).

Feanor of the Peredhil

Yes... more time wasted that should have been devoted to reading 30 pages about the Democratic Debate (and then writing 3 pages on what I just read). But from it I got this brilliant piece of advice: Never whistle at pointy polar bears. :D

I come to the Downs for the first time this week, then this comes along! Will I have time to post at CBC again?

Still, it deserves a green grin! :D :D :D Three green grins!

quick, Sam! get Gaffer Gamgee's nuclear squash before Sharku vaporizes The Shire! (BW)
COFLGOHAHA! It contains the word "nuclear", and it's appropriate! Bravo!

BW- if you ever get that Hall of Fame made you simply must include Cap'n Saucepan's Map.

It's very :D :p and kept me :) for quite a while.

BW, I wish to know all about the words. Was there a pre-made list that came with the code, and you added your own ME words? (I don't think words like "Frodo" and "Fatty Bolger" would come with a list.)
Or are they gleaned from a webpage? Like, if I suddenly typed in "ennui" it would appear in someone's millionth rotation?

(Because if that last case is true...to to to to to to the the the the for for for for it it it it of of of of of and and and and too too a a a...it would be great.)
;)

The Flash application came with a list of common words, a list of punctuations, and a list of suffixes. I immediately added Middle-earth words, and later added numbers and spaces. Since then, I have tweaked the word lists a bit, and I continue to do so. I will try adding a few more of the words you have suggested and see how it works out.

I've added several buttons to advance the Magnets forwards or backwards by more than one entry. This will enable you to scroll though the entries faster!

That's an awsome poetry tool! Thanks BW! You've made my day at work! (I know, i'm supposed to be working but, when i'm bored it's just so fun to write poems...)

Funny thing though, when i first played, i though you could only use the words given, you know, like a word challenge... I think that's why my first poem sounded horrible... but, it did give it an unique flare... It was about having a garden underneath the Gray Havens, Yavanna visited once in awhile, and it talked about rude guests...

It was a masterpiece... I LOVE THE MAGNET GAME!!! :D *Ka yells from the highlands...

Ah, I feel so complete...

I just realized how much fun this thing was.

"Imrahil considers Gimli's dead troll's laundry as Lobelia Sackville-Baggins"

and

"captain Grishnakh believes The Mouth of Sauron's Ent and Fatty Bolger already saw Pippin break Amsterdam!"

are both my work.

Absolutely hilarious.
