Used bookstores with Tolkien's Letters, and tobacconists that spend an hour being awesome.
Also pipes and pipe tobacco, and evening campfires and the gorgeous October temperatures that allow the same.
In short, Saturdays where nary a jot of schoolwork gets done.

I assign Midol! It's wonderful!
I assign ibuprofen to the Shire too. No matter what brand. :D
Volo: Well, waking up every weekend at nine am to the "serenade" of MCR and its minions at very earsplitting volumes with my brother and his friends singing at the top of their lungs make me hate teenaged boys with eyeliner.

Hehehee. Poor you, I can relate to that, having three little brothers.
Formented apple juice, even though it's probably illegal and socially not approvable. But I'm sure hobbits have nothing against it. :)

I assign oil colours and the stains they leave on your hands... makes me feel artistic. :D I could also assign wind, and the fact that I used to be a good writer*. I really find my old texts enjoyable, it's weird.
*I can't say if I still am since I don't write enough these days.

I assign very old books with that particular fragile texture and smell. I inherited an old Bible, published during 1899, from my dad, who said he got it from his mom who managed to save it along with an old rosary and nothing else but herself during the Second World War, and my grandma inherited it from her dad, all the way from some distant Spanish ancestor.

So true. I have green on the back of my hand just now, and white primer absolutely destroying my pretty red nails...
I assign taking a chance (ahem... ripping a perfectly good painting into one inch thick strips in order to weave it together into something much less representational) and having it look rather cool.

My friend asked me today if I have bruises on my fingers and palm.
I also want to assign the feeling when a painting is almost ready and you see it is actually quite good after going through all those bad phases. ;) It makes you believe in your ability to paint again.
I assign very old books with that particular fragile texture and smell.
Seconded.
Also English paperbacks deserve a nomination. I love their smell.
I assign China Miéville to the Shire. He might not enjoy being there, though, but hey, that's not my problem!

Well, I've never used oil color in my life, just oil pastels. However during my eleventh year while my mom was painting our house I took some blue and white and black water-based paints, and made a dolphin painting on cartolina. I was very proud of the stains on my hand and on the cotton shirt I was wearing. Unfortunately though I lost both shirt and painting when we moved out. :(

SO... what I assign to the Shire...
"Yé! utúvienyes! I have found it!"
I assign "Found Things" or perhaps better, "Lost Things Now Found" to the Shire. (Or to Rivendell, and midsummer dancing by the river. Tra-la-la-lally!)
Come unto these yellow sands, and then take hands;
curtsied when you have, and kissed the wild waves whist.

Days that turn out totally... hmm... idylic, in an unexplainable way; nice people, good friends and good not-that-close-friends; proper autumn; Saruman, Black Riders, and Pink Floyd. I wonder about what may look like the assignment of the latter three, of whom at least two sure have been to Shire before - with results which could be argued upon as being positive or not :D
I also assign good feelings overall.

The Thanksgiving holiday--sharing joy in gratitude for life and the splendors of the harvest. Very hobbitish I think, even if it is a New World holiday.

Finally UP Press has published an anthology of our finest love stories... now I can read love stories that are really worth it. I'm such a closet-romantic, see, and that book has helped me "get out". Off to the Shire!
Personal favorites include Lakambini Sitoy's Weight, Gilda Cordero Fernando's The Dust Monster, and Paz Marquez Benitez's Dead Stars. I think the latter can be found on the internet. :D
The end of the working week! For all that I enjoy my placement it does wear me out sometimes - and that makes Friday night amazing. :D
Also, the strange but very welcome extra bit of summer we seem to experiencing at the moment. I love the sunshine.

Nights of unexpected awesomeness where you're just on. You know... on, like everything you do is great, and even when you make a mistake you're happy because you can fix it and look how much it just taught you. And everyone knows you're totally on fire, and when you step back you're like, "Oh yeah. Now I remember why I'm doing this..." Those nights. Nights it all makes sense and your recently bruised up ego gets healed.

But then you wouldn't want to be seen carrying a Jeffrey Archer gutted or otherwise... oh taxlaw books don't remind me - when I was lowest form of life in an accounts practice it was my task to update the blighters. They were in loose leaf binders and you had to replace the updated pages which had an ever more convoluted numbering system since the updates were seldom the same lengths as the parts updated. Now hopefully superseded by online reference....

I want my snow already! Though now that I've said it, I'm sure it won't snow heavily until December 18 (the day I fly home for Christmas) and then I'll somehow end up getting stuck in a random airport. That's how it usually happens...

Yes, yes... the rest of you can definitely take the snow, if it means Edmonton can keep missing out. While there's perhapsa tiny little seed of nostalgia in me that would like to see some white stuff, the rest of me overwhelmingly assigns this brown Fall to the Shire (where, after all, snow is apparently rather rare). Not only has it meant that I have had the first semester of my life no slipping and sliding dangerously as my 20 minute commute becomes 40, but it has also meant that our construction project has managed to recoup the five weeks lost by the late groundbreaking in the spring--and this is hugely important, since there is no viable Plan B for me to live anywhere else next fall if that residence isn't built.
So, as far as Edmonton goes, keep the lack of snow coming!:smokin:

Maybe in the next lifetime if I am born in the temperate zone I can be able to see snow. Or at least, if I manage to get a scholarship somewhere where there is winter. But anyway Christmas in the perpetually hot and humid tropics can be very very very nice, especially with our own food. Yay for jamon de bola!

Why do weather assignations always bring so much discussion? :D
Now, I would like to assign two things. Firstly, finding creative ways of studying. For example, it is far nicer to learn French from the French translation of LotR than from the utterly dry and rather confusing grammar book I have. I appreciated my friends' cats working shifts when i stayed with them in NZ (no central heating) but when they both wanted to join me I ended up having to sleep round them - rather like with childseats in cars, the smallest beings take up the most space. And my last cat liked to sleep along my bolster which was a bit disconcerting.

This only works so long as the cat doesn't decide to scratch at something next to your head in the middle of the night and then - when you reach out groggily to shush her - massacre your hand thinking it's play time. *glances at healing claw marks*

Reminds me of our college cat, whom we fondly call Pusacal. The term is a pun, pusakal is actually a combination of two Filipino words pusa, cat, and kalye, street, so it's street cat literally, but since that cat lives in the College of Arts and Letters, we fondly call her Pusacal. Cat of the College of Arts and Letters. Often I let her sit on my lap while I read. :D
Anyway, I assign to the Shire the fact that our local boxing hero Manny Pacquiao has won yet again against some Mexican legend Oscar De La Hoya. Nice. Even non-sports fans such as me got really happy. And our professor promised us some burgers and coke if he won!

I am reading "Ringenes Herrer" in danish for the first time in some years and it is absolutely wonderful.
I was starting to get a bit sick of reading, after having read some heavy stuff for Uni classes and HoMe I for fun. . .
All the details I had forgotten, I can now picture as livingly as the letter from the bank that lies infront of me. It is however a bit challenging at times, by now I have gotten so used to the english names that I easily get confused by the danish ones. Of course not of the essential ones like "Herredet" (The Shire) and Hobbitrup (Hobbiton), but many of the family names are difficult and even places like Sidenĺ (Bywater) and Eskerřd (Esgaroth) pussled me for a short while.

Oh, no way! Silly just in the way that it's funny to hear it in your neighbors' language (and that Gandalf's main job is to scare people with every single comment he makes). I also realised I like the radio adaptations far more than the movies because it still leaves your visual senses unaffected, which is the main thing I hate about the movies.

We're thinking of naming them after Tolkien characters; our dogs' names are Arwen, Aragorn, Beren, Luthien, and D'Artagnan (whom we fondly call Dirty, because no one can pronounce French here).
Anyway, I assign being on vacation in a very far town after a very tiring semester. Baguio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baguio), I love you!

Yes ma'am. I just had my last real college class, too. I'm still two months shy of graduation, but the two classes between now and then are independent studies. This semester is pretty much done. All that stands between me and a bachelor's degree (apart from several thousand dollars) are a bunch of drawings of evil things.

I don't know how much is 80, but we have 20 here and it's great.
80 is equivalent to 27 degrees Celsius (while 20 is 68F). That would be summer weather for me. I'm quite envious of everyone experiencing such nice weather. Over here the weather has consistently stayed between 40-55F (5-13C) during the day with lots of rain and wind, though the sun will occasionally peer out. A typical New England spring, I suppose, but I really do hate this in-between weather and am ready for something warmer...

Not really. My mother said that when she was a girl in Bethel, there was native kids running outside in t-shirts in 30 degree weather. Although I have been known to wear sandals and no jacket in the middle of December.

I heard this poem at a thing I went to on Saturday and thought it was wonderful and will pass it on:
Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better,
to paint a picture or write a letter,
bake a cake or plant a seed,
ponder the difference between want and need?
Dust if you must, but there's not much time,
with rivers to swim and mountains to climb,
music to hear and books to read, friends to
cherish and life to lead.
Dust if you must, but the world's out there
With the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain.
This day will not come around again.
Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
old age will come and it's not kind.
And when you go - and go you must -
You, yourself, will make more dust!

I assigned brushtail possums to Orthanc a few weeks ago... but now I think I have t assign them to the Shire– at least, the mother-and-child pair who live in the wall behind our stove. They come out at night to eat leftover catfood, plus any fruit I give them. Since their initial running-amok, they've been extraordinarily clean, quite and well-behaved. This is very un-possum like; I think they're trying to keep their new source of food a secret from the other possums.
The "baby" (half-grown, actually) is very friendly– he eats out of my hand and lets me stroke him*. (It only took me a day to tame him).
I fear for the future, though– the cat pretends to be asleep when they're around, but I believe she's biding her time until she can get the little one alone. When I say "possum" to her in the daytime she looks over at the stove and licks her lips...
*Or her. Hard to tell.

Late afternoon/early evening thunderstorms (so long as you're not caught outside in the middle of one).
Ditto this. I had the amazing experience of waking up in the middle of the night last night to the feeling of mist/rain spraying at me through my open window. Through a gap in the window shade, I could see heat lightening flickering. There's something about watching a storm from bed, in the dark.

I guess it depends on how complicated it is... Three friends and I put one together in the space of three hours over the same number of days. It was simple, but it was amazing... largely because sometimes it involved doing very, very silly things like Dwarvish Victory Dances and spazzing a la film!Galadriel.
Unfortunately when we parted one another's company we had to split the pieces of the game in memory of the amazing times we had. I got the best part of all (the "action cards") but later passed it on when I knew I wouldn't be able to see anyone else in the group again.
Doesn't mean I don't remember exactly how it went and couldn't 1). instruct people or 2). make another one at any time...
Personally, though, I still want someone to come out with a Risk: Beleriand game.

And as for assignations, Leonard Cohen belongs to the Shire although I'm not sure if that'd be his favourite place.

That's one we've got too, it's a strange game but once you play, it's great fun. You can get 'expansion packs' for it too, but we've only got the Sauron one so far, the Friends and Foes one is quite hard to find.
The little individual battles games are worth having if you can find them, we've got a 'Balrog Battle' one we bought in a London games shop when we were there for a few days a couple of years ago, and ended up playing that instead of going out ;)

Tolkein-based board games definately belong in the Shire.
Lommy, you mean the LotR collaborative game, right?
Lord of the Rings (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=58)
Haven't played it for a while, but it's a cracker - and most challenging (especially, I think, for two players).
The there's the War of the Ring (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=52&enmi=War of the Ring), an absolutely fantastic game, which recreates both the Fellowship's Quest to destroy the Ring and the tactical skirmishes and battles taking place at the same time. What's more, the Battles of the Third Age expansion allows you to recreate the battles of Helm's Deep and Pelennor Fields.
And then there is the latest in the set - Middle Earth Quest (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=82&enmi=Middle-earth Quest) - a game set in the 17 year period between Bilbo's eleventy-first Birthday Party and the departure of Frodo and company on the Quest of the Ring. The characters are invented, but the situations which arise in the game are familiar. I have only played it a few times so far, but I am impressed with how well the game designers have brought to life a period which is really only referred to in the back story sections of LotR.
I should add that I do not work for Fantasy Flight Games - on the contrary, they have done well from me over the years - but it is fair to say that they are the premiere producers of Tolkien-themed board games. In consequence of which, I hereby consign them to the Shire. :)
