*rubs hands gleefully*
I have been expecting you..........
Please read the proposal for the game carefully before you sign up. It is vital for the game to work properly that all participants are able to be involved. Because some rules are different this time, passivity and non-participation are not acceptable. since I want only 12 players it should be a short game and so I think it is reasonable to expect you to know whether they will be available to post.
Time frame.
I did not expect WW4 to finish quite so quickly and anticpated starting on Monday. However assuming I get 12 players quickly, I intend to start on Sunday afternoon. This is because I may not be able to post on Saturday and the time will allow me to do preparations to speed the game once it has started......
Days and Nights will last up to 24 hours but may be shorter if a lynching is agreed quicker and the night time requests are submitted promptly. However participants should remember that due to work I may not be able to start a new day or night instantly the decisions are made. And this may effect the timings.
Basically, I should be able to check in briefly shortly before 9am BST ( GMT =1), again for longer between 1 and 2 o'clock but I will be online most in the early evening.
The Game
The players represent a village, and each member of the village has a role, which is kept secret. Most players are Ordinary Villagers, but three are Werewolves, one is a Seer, one a Hunter, one a Guardian, one Mythomaniac. The goal of the villagers is to eliminate all of the werewolves. Likewise, the goal of the werewolves is to eliminate the villagers, which they can do if the number of non-werewolves is equal or less than the number of werewolves.
Gameplay
The game consists of two different phases: Night and Day. The game begins with a short Night post before the first Day.
Night
Night lasts 24 hours, or less if all night-time activity is completed before then.
During Night, The Werewolves may PM one another. The Werewolves must PM the Moderator about who they have chosen to kill.
The Seer must PM the Moderator concerning their Dream.
The Hunter must PM the Moderator concerning who they want to kill if they die.
The Guardian must PM the Moderator concerning who they want to protect.
The Hunter and the Guardian will know each other's identities and may PM each other in order that their choices do not conflict.
The mythomaniac will be asked to choose another player on night 2. They will take on the same role as that person for the remainder of the game. If they choose another ordinary villager they will remain an ordinary villager and not reveal openly that they were the mythomane (they will of course klnow that another person is innocent......). If they choose a werewolf they will become a werewolf and be introduced to their furry friends. If they choose Seer they will become a second seer. However they will not be able to communicate. If they become a guardian or hunter they will be introduced to their fellow "angels".
The mythomaniac's new powers will not take effect the next day. So if the mythomaniac is the wolves chosen victim on night 2.... well they stay dead and don't become a wolf nor can they "hunt". Neither can they dream or guard. The earliest the mythomane could use their newly gained powers would be they became a hunter and were lynched next day.....
Day
Day lasts 24 hours, or less if all day-time activity is completed before then.
During the daytime the villagers all wake up and find that one of their own has been killed by the werewolves. At this point at least one player is a werewolf and so someone is gonna get lynched.
During this phase all players, including werewolves who have assumed villager form, must publicly discuss their suspicions. Eventually it will reach a point where villagers start to cast votes for who they feel is a werewolf and must be lynched. Votes are retractable and are cast by embolden a name with a ++ sign before it, all in capitals, e.g. ++Mithalwen.
At the end of the Day (or earlier if a majority is reached before this) the player with the most votes is lynched (killed) and their secret role is revealed. If votes are tied at the end of a full 24hr day a player will be selected at random from ALL PLAYERS LIVING AND UNDEAD and will be deemed to have been killed in the crush of the mob.. To retract a vote embolden the name with -- before it and cast a new vote. EG: -- Mithalwen ++ Erenor. If you retract a vote and do not give a new vote you will be deemed to have voted for yourself.
DO NOT CHANGE YOUR VOTE BY EDITING. YOU MUST NOT EDIT POSTS. TO CHANGE A VOTE MAKE A NEW POST USING THE PROCESS ABOVE.
I trust that other players will deal appropriately with those who either do not vote, or appear to abuse the retractable vote. It is allowed so that villagers may be persuaded and rethink not for random rabble rousing. Persistent offenders may find themselves meeting unexpected ends.
When the lynching is finished all the villagers go back to their homes to sleep and the next Night begins.
Winning
The villagers win if they kill all of the werewolves. The werewolves win if they kill enough villagers so that their numbers are equal. At this point the werewolves can openly rise up and slaughter the rest of the villagers.
Roles (in slightly more detail):
Ordinary Villagers: All they have to do is deduce the werewolves by Day.
Werewolves: Choose one person to kill per Night by PMing one another and discussing their ideas, then PM the Moderator with this decision. Werewolves may not PM each other during Day. During Day, they should try to avoid detection as werewolves.
Seer: Chooses one person to Dream about each Night. The role of this person is revealed only to the Seer. During Day, the Seer should use this information to influence the debate as inconspicuously as possible.
The Werewolf Hunter: If the Hunter is killed by a Werewolf or hanged by Villagers, he/she names one other player before being killed. That player is then automatically killed. The Hunter should PM the Moderator each Night to say who they want to kill if they die during night. If the Hunter is lynched during Day, there might be a small delay in the beginning of the next Night as they will need to contact the Moderator
The Guardian: Each night, the Guardian names another player. If that player is the Werewolf victim, the victim survives and there is no death that night.
The Guardian and the Hunter may confer at night in order that their requests do not compete.
Discrepancies
Compromising privacy: You can say you're a villager/seer/werewolf, etc. all you want, but under no circumstances should you post anything that would give your claim absolute credibility. You are not allowed to post any PMs or other private conversation between yourself and the game moderator. Infractions of this rule are grounds for immediately disqualification from that game and all future games.
Outside interference: Once you are killed in a werewolf game you should no longer post in the thread, or the Werewolf I thread, or communicate with players that are still alive in the game. You're dead. Dead people tell no tales. Breaching of this rule will result in disqualification from all future games.
Private Messages: Players may not PM one another about the game; all discussion must be open. The exceptions are the Werewolves, who may only PM one another during Night, and the Guardian and Hunter who may PM each other at Night. Please remember to keep space for PMs from other players or the Moderator, if relevant.
Role Play: I am not overly keen on this as the pretence soon slips - however there will be acertain amount of characterisation - further details will be communicated to accepted players. So rather than fake villagers, regard yourselves as participants in a Murder Mystery party set in a pre-industrial society.....
So while, faux-rural accents will not be generally required (nor appreciated by teh moderator!), please remember you are playing a game not presenting a draft treaty to the European Parliament. I hope that the retractable vote will reduce the need for lengthy hypotheses ..... the moderator reserves the right execute anyone who bores her to sobs (if only this were an option in Real life...)
Absences: As I said, if you don't think you can give this game sufficient time over its expected life of a week, please do not sign up. If there are truly unforseen circumstances contact me ASAP.
Please remember to stay invisible. You can do this by going to User CP, change options and clicking the Invisible Mode button.
Rules:
-Rule 1 Read all the above carefully
- Rule 2 No whinging
- Rule 3 See Rule 1
- Rule 4 The moderator is always right and her decision is final
-Rule 5 No whinging
-Rule 6 There is no rule 6.
If you have any queries or think you may have spotted my deliberate mistake (ie anything I have inadvertantly forgotten or not thought of) post them. Otherwise sign up below (name only - no role necessary at this point) and I will PM with further destructions...
acknowledgements to TGWBS for ripping of his rules...

I have read all carefully.
I am not whining.
You, Mithalwen, are always right.
I am committed to the game for the duration unless thou release me or death take me.

The werewolf games have been appealing to me, and I'd like to join this one although I can't really do anything on the Downs from July 10-15 and possibly a little after. Would it be alright for me to play until then and maybe die in some kind of freak accident before then? If this is not possible I can understand.
Mithalwen
06-30-2005, 01:48 PM
Morm & Holbytlass -You are both clearly ideal participants!!!
I will email you with further details - but obviously not yet your roles which will only be selected when we are all assembled... :D
Only nine places left if we assume SpM is pencilled in.......
Mithalwen
06-30-2005, 01:55 PM
Meneltarmarcil : this is tough but I think I will have to say no given the timeframe. I mena you might be dead on day 2 but you might be among a handful of players reaching the denouement next weekend - you might have a significant role - it would be unfair to the other players to lose someone at that stage. I hope that I will have another chance to moderate if this goes well and that you will be able to play then

06-30-2005, 01:56 PM
That's fine. I'll wait until some other game.

06-30-2005, 02:38 PM
Hmm, a lot of that looks oddly familiar.
I wish to sign up.
Ah, I found the deliberate mistake!
Basically, I should be able to check in briefly shortly before 9am BST ( GMT =1)
If GMT were equal to 1, time would be frozen. And then you would reign forevermore, and nobody could challenge your supremacy! I see your plan!

be flattered :D ....
YEs well spotted! BST is of course GMT + 1 hour... yet to fully master the shift key...

Best of luck, Mith-can't play in this due to long sojourn in Florence, but I'm sure you'll carry this off extremely well, and I'll enjoy reading it on my return...
I'd like to join in again please Mithalwen. Hopefully I'll last a bit longer this time!

... I think that I shall have to pass on this game. I will be away for 2 weeks beginning on Sunday, 10 July, and it looks quite possible that this game will run beyond that.
Have fun!

07-01-2005, 11:53 AM
Lhuna - I am prepared to make it a baker's dozen... so I assume you want in? I think I can manage one more without upsetting the balance too much..........
I will work on the basis of yes and allocate you a role... if you don't want to play let me know asap
Mithalwen
07-01-2005, 12:22 PM
Okay troops, Iam about to attempt a mass-message re. characterisation. If you do not receive this please let me know.
Once that is done I will select roles at random and the wolves and the Seer & guardian may liase to arrange contact policy. Who knows what timezones they may be in... The Wolves may like to nominate a spokeswolf..... In the event of the Guardian and the Hunter not liasing and submitting conflicting requests, I have decided that the guardian would not be able to protect against the hunter.
The Guardian may not protect the same person twice running.
As soon as you know your role, pleas make yourself invisible.
Only the Seer needs to contact me to give a name. Noone else is active teh first night.
Once the game thread opens please use this thread or PMs for questions and leave the game thread for the game.
I am sure, there will be points I have forgotten but despite my megalomania yesterday I will try to resolve them as fairly as possible.
The Game will start on Sunday afternoon DVWP. If there is a minor catastrophe (ie loss of net acccess) to prevent this it will start Monday lunchtime...... if there is a major catastrophe (IE I fall under a bus ...well sorry folks you will have to start again with another moderator....
Thank you all for playing. I hope we all have a lot of fun in our different ways.
Mithalwen.

TO CLARIFY
I will be the first corpse.
Only the SEER needs to do anything before the Game starts on Sunday afternoon.
(Obviously the wolves and Hunter&Guardian may contact to discuss strategy until the DAY starts..)
Please make sure you have space for PMs .......

Mithy,
I know the characters are for your own amusement, but do you mind if we use them in the village too? I'd like to work in a few jokes concerning my own character - and I've already guessed one or two of the others, so I'd like to make a few puns there too.

Mith, when you say that we have to reach a majority, do you mean that for us to lynch someone at least 7 of us have to agree? In other words, if the score was
A - 5
B - 4
C - 4
Person A would still be lynched, right?
Sorry if this seems obvious, but considering all the other rule changes I thought I'd check.
Gil-Galad

Question: can that myth guy choose a dead villager? And is the village aware of the person that is chosen?
Mithalwen
07-04-2005, 11:48 AM
Right. The voting..... sorry.. 7 votes were needed to "stop the day".
Mithalwen
07-04-2005, 12:08 PM
At the end of the Day (or earlier if a majority is reached before this) the player with the most votes is lynched (killed) and their secret role is revealed. If votes are tied at the end of a full 24hr day a player will be selected at random from ALL PLAYERS LIVING AND UNDEAD and will be deemed to have been killed in the crush of the mob.. To retract a vote embolden the name with -- before it and cast a new vote. EG: -- Mithalwen ++ Erenor. If you retract a vote and do not give a new vote you will be deemed to have voted for yourself.
If you do not vote and unassailable majority is not reached. You will be deemed to have voted for yourself.
Remember - you have a retractable vote.
The Mythomaniac may only choose from those living at the end of day 1. If I were starting again I would have said that if they choose the same bod as the wolves they are dead too. the person they choose will not be publically revealed until the game is over.
BTW Please use characters names not the names of the people they impersonate... there are ways of indicating that you know without spoiling the pleasure of recognition for others. Thank you.
the guy who be short
07-04-2005, 12:36 PM
Hmm... so if seven votes are not reached, what happens? does the Day continue until they are? Or is the person with the most votes lynched? Or do you choose somebody random?
Mithalwen
07-04-2005, 12:40 PM
At the end of the Day (or earlier if a majority is reached before this) the player with the most votes is lynched (killed) and their secret role is revealed.
While I am disappointed by the turnout. This was posted in the first post on this board and it will stand. Off to fix the gallows.....................
the guy who be short
07-04-2005, 12:43 PM
It's also the day the US finally beat us Brits, so they're all off and partying. Voter turnout should be higher new Day.
Mithalwen
07-04-2005, 01:03 PM
If things don't improve .....hmmmm I feel Gil was unlucky since the uncast vote could theoretically have changed things but it seemed unfair to go completely random when most had tried. I will have to ponder the way ahead but I am very disappointed :(
Right Night has started.
Wolves and the Hunter/ guardian may communicate.
The wolves need to tell me who the want to kill
The guardian needs to tell me who they want to protect,
The mythomaniac needs to tell me the name of the player they want to match with.
It would be helpful but less essential for the hunter to tell me who they want to kill in the event of their death tonight.
Sleep peacefully children.
But Mith after a while it will become impossible to reach a 7 vote majority because there won't be enough people to make this work. What then?
the guy who be short
07-04-2005, 03:03 PM
Mith has cleverly arranged for there to be an odd number of players (or maybe it was chance, who knows). With an odd number, you can always have a majority.
Tomorrow, the majority needs will be 6. Then 5, then 4, then 3, then 2.
Oh I see, thanks TGWBS that was most helpful.
Feanor of the Peredhil
07-04-2005, 03:06 PM
It's also the day the US finally beat us Brits, so they're all off and partying. Voter turnout should be higher new Day. Oh no, m'boy. You've got it all wrong. It's the day the US officially declared that we were going to beat you Brits. We celebrate it with brightly colored explosives and a lot of fried chicken. :D But I agree with you that turnout will no doubt be higher tomorrow.

Yes the number of players was a happy accident. I had asked for a dozen players because it had been a good number when I played the first game - but I had forgotten that poor Shelob had got killed before the start leaving 11. So that is why I called in a sub when Lhuna pulled out. Thanks Fea!
For the same reason if Sophie does not respond to my e mails very shortly, I am going to ask Gil to reincarnate in her place.

If this happens - Gil will be in the secret role drawn by Sophie which of course might be the same as the secret role drawn by Gil which has now been revealed.
think of it as parts in a play - Gil will be doubling up that is all. I physical person 2 roles. anyway this is still academic. He will have had no benefit from having already played a part.
Sophie has not even picked up her original notification messages. I hope she is OK. But I want the game to go as planned if possible.

I think there is too much needless chit chat on this thread. We need to be careful what is said here. I thought this was only to talk about game play aspects and questions.
Kitanna
07-05-2005, 07:06 PM
Needless chit chat is helping take away from the fact we're ripping each other apart in the actual game, morm! :D
But I was really gonna say Gil-Galad wasn't really the one we lynched. It was clearly he's evil twin Gil-Gabad. Not our loveable Gil!
I'm just curious when does Day 2 end?
Holbytlass
07-05-2005, 07:38 PM
Day and Night phases are 24 hours. If you are like me and haven't got the GMT zone things worked out, that's okay, whenever Mithalwen posts a Day or Night post look at the upper left hand corner and that gives the time (your own) of the post and you will know you have 24 hours to do business.

The PM was labelled "URGENT!!!". I couldn't very well ignore it, and once opened, my curiosity got the better of me. I agreed in order to find out why I was playing at all (which, of course, is because you weren't).
Side note: Could we not chat on the notice board thread about the game? That's what the game thread and daylight hours are for. I've gotten suspicions from some of you from what you've said on here that I'm not sure I'm allowed to cite. That's really just not fair.

Mithalwen,
Presuming you have Internet explorer, you can find all votes by:
1) Going to the bar at the top of the screen.
2) Clicking 'edit'
3) Clicking 'Find (on this page)'
4) Typing in '++'
5) Pressing Enter.
Alternatively, press Control and F and the 'Find' box will come up automatically. This means you'll get all the votes, and you don't even have to search for them yourself. :D

Of course not, dear. We'll all follow orders, seeing as how you're the all-mighty mod and can simply narrate us out of the game if the mood strikes, right everyone?

I have to say omnipotence is not all it is cracked up to be. I have some sympathy for a former colleague who said that he believed in God, just that he didn't expect him to be interested in us anymore after all the strife we put him through and spoiling his nice world....

that is why I said one more strike ......
Well partly 3 deaths in 24 hours is draining my collective juices. Partly I am feeling a little manipulated.... and I have real life issues arising that may affect my timing. Actually I although some people seem to be trying to usurp me as moderator, given that it is barely 24 hours since the last "night" began and the situation is critical. I just want ot check that everyon has at least realised there has been a day. And please I will do this for myself...............

Well, it was fun while it lasted.
And sorry for my scarcity. I didn't think life was going to be that busy, but it was...and still is. Very selfishly (and yet quite truthfully), I lay the blame upon my family.
Thanks for letting me live as long as I did. Wasn't much, but...I take what I can get. :p

The Cassandra Award goes to Kitanna
Unjustly maligned and suspected, to my mind she was a superb seer. She picked Kath as the Mythomaniac on the first night and Mormegil as a wolf on the second. she was already suspected by the time she was able to try and communicate this and so probably feared to be more explicit.
While TGWBS got the right strategy it was after he had voted for Kitanna.. so he gets the Baldrick Award for his cunning plan with a fatal flaw. He also gets a bonus prize for the most enjoyable characterisation :D
Gil Galad gets the Lazarus Award for his return to the fray which added to much amusement again. Also managed to play the role of the hunter without seeming to really understand it!!!!
Fea gets the Mandelson Award for Spin Doctoring. I have to say she is a player who rises to the occasion. If I catch her playing like a loon I will know she is a humble villager! Love the way she drew attention to Gil's substitution while eliding the simialar reasons for her own.
Holbytlass gets the Capatain Oates Award for (attempted) noble self sacrifice. It could have turned the game.
I have to go almost immediately but just time for one further award -
The Svengali Award goes to Morm - I spluttered into my lunch as I realised that second night that:
Durelin wanted to protect Mormegil
Kitanna wanted to dream about Mormegil
Kath wanted to be Mormegil
Mithalwen btw had to be very careful
not to answer Mormegil's all so reasonable questions .....
Hypnotic charisma - I was seriusly freaked.
Many thanks to you all - it was an interesting game. My poor lab rats...all gone :(
Post Mortem tomorrow

Mormegil, Feanor, Orominueilin, and Kath were the wolves. Oooh!! I was so sure that Feanor was innocent. (I bet you just loved that!) I did get Morm and Kath right but too little too late. Probably not ever think Of Oro.
We await your summary of deaths, strategies and all around thoughts!
Also, Kittana, who dreamt of and Gil the thunder mister(ess) who did you protect.
Great game all! Great moderating Mithalwen!!

i got bored and felt like picking on Morm...
Thank you everyone for a fantastic game, especially my fellow wolves Fea, Mormegil and Oro who I would have been lost without, and Mithalwen who wrote such wonderful deaths and made me mythomaniac!
I would just like to ask though how on earth I actually managed to convince anyone to vote for TGWBS over me! He created such a brilliant case against me and I had nothing!

About the people who charmingly proclaimed my innocence... I loved it. When Holby was "certain" of my innocence (was that today?) I fell out of the chair laughing.
I knew that the last day, all I had to do was get one innocent to vote for TGWBS, so I dropped everything and tagged onto Firefoot's explanation (which was dead convenient, because it meant that I didn't have to say it myself).
Fea gets the Mandelson Award for Spin Doctoring. I have to say she is a player who rises to the occasion. If I catch her playing like a loon I will know she is a humble villager! Love the way she drew attention to Gil's substitution while eliding the simialar reasons for her own.
Thanks Mith, for the chance to play wolf, and the neat award. I kept saying I was guilty (I'll provide the links, if anyone's forgotten), not to mention publicly stating everything I had planned, and nobody listened! It was great. I accused people of doing everything that I did myself, and nobody connected it. I have to admit to loving every second of it. Wolf Chat will be posted pretty soon.

Oh, you wicked one!! I had no suspicions of you and of course I was certain (I would've betted on it) that you were innocent when you changed your vote to save me. Did you do it to look innocent or did you really think I was the hunter and about to take one of you down? At least I made your day!!
Kittana, I'm sorry I really did try to save you, but for that wicked-wolf, Feanor!! :D
And hey, I did vote for Kath and not TGBWS.
BTW< Firefoot, love the new avatar, it's beautiful. I STILL can't get any to work for me.

Both. Once I'm back on the computer I've got all the wolf chats saved onto (I was designated caretaker of PMs) I'll get them up and you'll see me in all my infinate wisdom. ;) I thought you were hunter, but the real clincher to that little trick was making myself look innocent. Which is also why I pushed for Firefoot's death. With that, I figured that if I was going to push for TGWBS's lynching, I had to have some real physical evidence (even if we had to create it on our own).

I maintain that if Nilp's nation wasn't about to collapse and if he didn't have to study, the villagers could have won. :p
Anywho, I know Firefoot was to frame me, but durelin - was I right about her death being for the same reason?
About Fea: I'd started suspecting her by the last Day, and the vote clinched it. I kept friendly with her to the end, though - always handy to have a wolf on your side for your own self-survival. :D If I'd managed to get Kath lynched, I'd probably have gone for Fea next, presuming I would have lived. After that, I wouldn't have got Oro, so the wolves would probably still win.

Good game everyone! I was so terrified after Firefoot suspected me on the first day that just about everyone had figured out that I was a wolf, but obviously you hadn't. I was really worried about voting for tgwbs, too. I realized that if we couldn't get either Gil or Nilp to vote for him too, then Kath would be lynched and it would be rather obvious that since there were two other wolves, then the two that voted for tgwbs must be them. I was astounded that nobody really suspected me after Firefoot did in the very beginning.

Good grief... I should be taken out and shot... er, lynched. I think I'll give myself an award: the biggest aid to the wolves without actually being a wolf. ;) I played into you wolves' plans perfectly - and then some. I think I'm getting too predictable. I'll have to change my strategy, or something.

Why, please tell me, do I have the idea now that I'll never live past DAY 1 again?I don't understand why we didn't follow that from the beginning. It's a great idea. If she's a wolf, good, if she's innocent, she'd only confuse us in future.

I believe that it has been suggested before that Feanor be lynched on DAY 1 simply by default. :D

Yes, it had been pointed out that her confusion strategy was dangerous (if she were innocent.. worked pretty well for a woluf...)

07-11-2005, 06:37 AM
As you can see by the Letters, I had seriously considered changing tactics all together and being really quiet. :D The idea was that everyone would assume that no wolf would be stupid enough to do something so obvious. But y'all underestimate the power of insanity and stupidity... they nearly always work out. Like Mith admonishing me for pointing out, first post, that I shouldn't have been there. Figured I ought to bring it into the open before someone else did. :) And telling you to lynch me while you still had the chance... you really should have. ;)

It was more of a case of how much reverse psych one game could take... and why Lhuna could not be so easily excluded having been allowed in... TGWBS was a help there of course pointing out the benefits of odd numbers
