Who can tell me if Sauron was invisible when he wears the ring.
Or does the ring only have this effect on mortals.
If so, why?

Well since he fought Gil-galad and Elendil with the ring on, I think he remained visible. I also believe his wearing the ring in Numenor being mentioned by Tolkien, in his letters. Plus he had full control of the ring.

How could Sauron have worn the ring in Numenor?
I thought it was forged after Numenor's fall?

No-it was forged in 1600 S.A. The Fall of Numenor was in 3319 S.A and Sauron was brought there in 3262, S.A.

I think the basic concepts here have been discussed before. I'm pretty sure Sauron could've made himself invisible without the Ring, before or after it was forged. Sauron used the Ring to control the others, and its will was his will. It was him. Not all of him, but him nonetheless. The invisibility effect on others reflects the idea that no one could bend the will of the Ring to his own desires, save Sauron, who was the Ring.

My understanding is that the Ring, when worn, takes the wearer into the spirit world. Thus, he becomes invisible to those in the material world, but visible to those already in the spirit world, such as the Ringwraiths.

Presumably, Sauron, as a Maia, was able to exist in both the material and spirit world, and so did not need the Ring to enter the spirit world. Why therefore did he imbue the One Ring with an ability that he did not need? Or was this just a natural side-effect of Rings of Power?

I think that Sauron Could decide if he wanted to become invisible or not while he had the ring on. The power of the ring is Power, and the will to dominate all life smilies/wink.gif I hope I was any help (probably not, but o' well smilies/biggrin.gif

Eol, it is probably best not to dredge up too many of these old, already-concluded threads.

Since the Ring was imbued with the ability to make its wearer invisible, then it is only natural that Sauron its creator would be able to become invisible whilst wearing the Ring (especially since he was a Maiar and could be invisible anyway). He was obviously not always invisible with the Ring on, just, I would imagine, when he chose to be.
