Those of us who were in Birmingham for 'Tolkien 2005' were able to see and hear Alan Lee, who presented his slide show twice, since the room was overfilled for the first showing! His sketchbook was also available, and he signed it for those who wanted him to do so. If I remember correctly, Lalwendë was one of them.

I did indeed get my book signed! I had to turn up a bit early too, as I suspected the queue would quickly grow to ridiculous lengths, which it did. He was very nice to talk to as well, very quietly spoken and interested in his fans, which was nice as book-signing's not something I've ever gone in for before. :)

I was quite surprised they had the Sketchbook there as I'd heard about it and wanted it (Alan Lee being a favourite LotR artist), and they had issued some copies especially early just for Tolkien 2005. There's a sketch of a Barrow in there too, based on a site in Orkney.

ohhh how i wish he was coming to my state. The stops are all rather spread out, aren't they? Maybe I'm selfish, but it'd be amazing if he could do more...the nearest one is at least a 10 hour drive away.

So far as I've seen, book signings are nearly always interesting and profitable events. My sister went to one and ended up having a discussion with Orson Scott Card on how horrible he thought the cover art was for the book she brought!
