I was wondering, when one is entitled to one, what personal title people would choose.

It's up the the administraters (and I believe moderaters too, but not sure). First, you much reach 500 posts, because that's the final "given" title. After 500 posts if they think you've been making good contributing posts to the forum they will PM you and tell you to pick a title. So, it can happen anytime after 500 posts.

So, it can happen anytime after 500 posts. Or, it can happen after 400-odd posts when you're least expecting it, because somehow the mods have decided that your presence on the forum is quite amusin' and you must be encouraged to make a bigger fool of yourself than you already are....but enough of my life story! :D
Cheers!

Mouldy Maggot? :p
Kaptin Knickers? :D
Spawn of the Dead? :)

No you guys! I mean once you get to how many ever points you need to get a self-appointed title, what would yours be? Forgive me, Elonve, but for both Boromir88 and myself, the question is moot, as there is only one Laconic Loreman and only one Haunted Halfling and the question of what we would choose has long since passed. Some of the newer members should post with their outrageous choices, as I remember having done this before, coming up with "Crackpot in Residence" as a choice once, I believe. But the choice made long before was not the final choice, as you can see!
Cheers!
Lyta
P.S. I wouldn't be caught dead with the personal title "Kaptin Knickers!" ;)

I totally agree with you there Lyta. Same with Mouldy Maggot, which isn't as bad. Spawn of the Dead? Not bad. But I was kind of going for somewhere along the "insane" route. Not quite sure what though. I'll get back to you on that.

You are meant to have something in the spirit of the downs - and while it is fun to think up something wacky - the fact is that once you have chosen (as with an Elvish Spouse!) you may not change it, so (unless youhave the power even to enchant our in-barrow Mandos) it is a good idea to choose something that reflects your personality and which you can live with.
That said I must admit that it took me all of 5 seconds to respond to the call and since others in my batch had their titles installed pretty quickly I don't thinkI was alone in having thought what I would like should it be offered.... I had had three ideas, one of which had to be discarded because it was already taken.. so when it came to the crunch Yeats and "Pilgrim Soul" won over Brooke and "Bewildering Ghost"
When you say 'respond to the call' do you mean that you get a PM about it?

You might like to bear in mind that the PT have to suit the theme of "The Barrow Downs" and also reflect yourself. Having checked the rules I was sent, they point out firmly that the forum is a barrow not a flower meadow. So Wilwarin might be allowed her butterflies because of her screen name while others might not.... and ideally it should have a spooky twist... so a fey fritillary rather than a fluffy one!!!
There is a butterfly called "Mourning Cloak" which might have possibilities or "Painted Lady" - there is a "Stinky Leaf Wing" aswell but I think that would be taking the decomposition aspect a bit far!!!! But I have to say it is better that Lord Mouldy Pants.... Elonve - I loved the other ideas - Dark side of the moon is nice and spooky ...

I finally bother to delete my invitation PM just before I could have quoted from it... but Mith's right... it does say that it must remain in theme.
Had it not had those explicit rules, I assure you I would now be called "Banned" or "Untitled". "Angel of Music" is also a common "I really wanted it, but changed my mind at the last minute." Several of us have been this close to picking it.
Also, it has to be under a certain number of characters... I can't remember the exact number, but I know that my own "Bringer of the Red Dawn" was closer that I'd meant it to be.

They don't have to fit with your screen name - but they should be individual to you - I just meant that butterflies might (and it is not me who decides!!!) be too flower meadowery in general but OK for Wilwarin because they are part of her identity. If you look at the member lists and sort by post count or rep you will see what has already been passed by the Wight you will get an idea of what works.
Some of my favourites are the name tie ins though - SpM's Corpus Cacaphonus, Lalaith's Blithe Spirit, Le Petit Choux's Vegetable of Doom, Rimbaud's Perilous Poet, etc ... others are nice little Tolkien refs like Oddwen and Drummer in the Deep. Hookbill's Alive without breath & Sophia the TM's Scent of Symbelmyne combine Death and Tolkien in a elegant fashion.
Others are appropriate to their owners .......... others I am still puzzling ... like Durelin's.
Congratulations TGWBS... I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

hmmm....discombobulated dead, not bad, I like it.
Of course I like all the ones with alliteration, It's just neat saying them like Saucepan's Corpus Caucophonous, or Kransha's Ubuquitous Uruloki, Fordim's Gibbering Gibbet. Along with the many others.
Then there are those who are just well chosen and sound good...
Bb's Cryptic Aura.
Mithalwen's Pilgrim Soul
I also like Encataire's bittersweet symphony and Fea's, and Child's, and Nil's...ahh there's so many of them.
Anway. Yes, I basically concur and say the same thing Mithalwen says. I'll just regurgitate it a bit differently. Well, when choosing mine I chose something totally opposite of myself.
Laconic, being brief and if you've seen any of my posts I'm very much not brief. Perhaps you can tell? Something that would take maybe 3 sentences to say I drag out into 3 paragraphs and then often get lost and confused and just stop typing.
Then loreman, I'm anything but, so that may be a path you choose. Instead of something like you, something totally opposite of you, should prove interesting. Of course trying to stick with the theme of the downs as well.

09-01-2005, 01:11 PM
I htink you are being a bit hard on yourself there Boromir... and there are a couple of fine new alliterative titles - Raffish Rapscallion and Maundering Mage.
I knew I wanted a literary reference because it was my degree subject and Pilgrim Soul reflected my love of travel and also was reminiscent of Mithrandir - The grey pilgrim. I did consider trying to render it into Elvish as Fearandir but I was fairly sure that -dir is a masculine suffix... I think in someways Bewildering Ghost would have been more accurate but a little aspiration is allowed. I like to think of myself as a freespirit journeying through life - though some of my family would say dilletante wastrel
mormegil
09-01-2005, 03:19 PM
In choosing mine I must say it was fairly difficult. I didn't want to be stuck with something I didn't like. I like the alliteration bit of it. I actually liked the word Eidolon but I was informed that Eidolon is already being used by Diamond18 (Eidolon of a Took which I like) and that I'm discouraged from using that unless I was really set upon that. Since I wasn't the Enigmatic Eidolon could go. I luckily found a word I really liked...Maundering. Now the problem was to find something to go with it. I had words like mystic, mage, and mercenary going through my head. I liked all of them but in the end figured that mage fits the theme best and me to an extent.
There's a brief insight into what became an ardous task for me. I spent so long thinking on it...probably too much

I must say I do like mormegil's Maundering Mage. It makes me think just a tad of Maundy Thursday before I start playing around with things like 'wandering wage' and 'pondering page' and 't'underin' age'. None of which makes any sense about mormegil, but it's great to be able to play with words. Good choice and congratulations!
I remember when I was offerred a PT. For some reason people had a difficult time thinking of me as cryptic. I have no idea why.
To be honest, I've never understood the connection between Mithalwen and Pilgrim Soul. It must be a reference I don't know.
And I rather think that hangman is something quite well proportioned for Fordim. The game, that is.
For those of you who aren't in chat or aren't among the old timers, Esty's Ghosted Princess has a chat "applicability" which cleverly combines both chat and forum. And Squatter's Spectre of decay, well, you have to know him to get the pun. Of course, none of us would take that to mean Squatter is a stinker. ;)
I have always thought that Mr.Underhill's Dread Horseman is way cool.

09-03-2005, 03:40 AM
Seeing as morm has done so and I have nothing better to do, I shall now tell you of the trials of inventing my title!
I probably spent even longer than morm thinking about it - just ask Kath or Fea. I was constantly asking them to provide feedback in potential titles.
Before I was asked, I wanted Herald of the Western Kings. I'm not sure why. I guess it's sort of like Nilp's - the last of an old order returning to a fallen world. Unfortunately that was too long, and didn't suit me anyway.
I played around with Herald of the Fallen West for a little while as compensation, but didn't like it.
Unnumbered Tears, though beautiful, was condemned as uninventive.
Unheeded Lamentation was very beautiful and almost adopted. I was just pondering accepting it when Kath scolded me for choosing sad titles.
Thinking about it, I decided she was right; a sad title wouldn't suit me. I was just feeling a little melancholy at the time.
So I became Shadowed Prince. I'm not sure where it came from, but I'm sure you'll agree it sounds way cool. ;)

I like that, Wilwa. It would fit you well.
Congrats to all the new receivers of PT's; excellent choices, all of you. TORE's in particular fits him excellently, methinks.
I wish I had thought of pm'ing other people for feedback when I chose mine - I talked to a couple of people on IM (my cousin, a Downer of about 75 posts, and someone else, also a Downer, I think...), but I didn't like their ideas at all. I particularly liked the word 'Holbytla' - it sounds cool, and it's a link between what are probably my two favorite ... cultures? can't think of a word ... of ME - Hobbits and the Rohirrim. I toyed with the idea of "Elusive Illusion," but it doesn't look as good on the screen, and it didn't contain that favorite word. I had started out looking at the word Simbelmynë, but since two Downers had already used that I dropped the idea.
Somewhat random aside: I actually saw the word Ubiquitous the other day - it was bothering me because I couldn't remember whose title it was in. But it made me think of the Downs, which is a happy thing in any scenario. ;)
I've also decided that PT's are good for your vocabulary... ;)

Mine was chosen rather entirely at random. I wanted two words that sounded good together than connoted an other-worldly quality in accordance with the Downs while at the same time maintaining my, well, shall we say boundless femininity. I'm very girly, and "enchantress" just sounded like it fit in so well with that concept. After I decided Enchantress, Ethereal just fell right into place. And it sounded pretty, so here I am, having submitted Ethereal Enchantress so long ago and still happy with it. Kind of like a well-thought-out tattoo in the perfect spot. Not that I'd know.

I think everyone will have to wait a while now - Permission for Personal Titles is granted every few months. It isn't something that happens automatically when you hit 500 posts. Presumably it makes life easier for the Powers that be, and it is more fun to see what others in the cohort have chosen.

Yeah, I don't think I got mine until about 800 posts. Mostly because I goofed off for a while, then I cracked down, got serious and participated in the CbC threads. Now I've slipped back to goofing off.
Anyway, point is, 500 posts is just one of the prerequisites for attaining a personal title. It's at the B-W and other deciding people (don't know who they are, but assume it's Mister Underhill) disgression. You must have it offered to you because you have made a "good contribution" to the forum.
And I think that works, because if you think about it someone could post 500 times but it could all be junk that adds nothing to the forum, or to the intellect of the downers.

I, too, thought you had to reach the big 500 before you even thought about getting a PT. Imagine my surprise when I got a PM at 400-something posts! I think it was around 430-450 range or so, my memory is terrible. But I tend to rant and write long posts more often and fewer of them, so maybe that was part of it. I also agonize about certain posts and leave them up on my screen for hours, while I do dishes and go to the store 50 miles away, etc. etc. Maybe that's part of it? (No, I'm making that up!) Also, I get more of a kick out of discussion of PT's than the actual PT's themselves, which, if you think about it, once you've chosen, all you can do is live with being the "Haunted Halfling" even if you change utterly beyond anything in your wildest imaginings when first you were sent the magic PM...but, as I said, I think too much about oddities and tend to spin off into the ridiculous! Who's to say I'm not a Sassy Sprite or even Kaptin Knickers at times? But a title never tells all! ;)

That's a good one, if it's not too long :D
I myself have thought about The Green Wizard, Immortal Grey Echo and Immortal maiden elven-wise . The first is because my friends call me that, the second is a combination of the meanings of Thinlómien and my real name and the last is a very beautiful phrase that describes Lúthien. If I've developed myself so much from my current state that I can call myself elven-wise then I'll probably take that, otherwise I'll consider the first ones or something else. Luckily I have lots of time... :)

Nice thought, Glirdan, but at the Barrow Downs we tend to aim for a Personal Title that is both original and applicable in some way to our screen character. And related to Middle-earth, naturally. We already have The Perilous Poet (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/member.php?u=534) in the person of Rimbaud. Perhaps you could satisfy your desire for a language-based moniker by choosing some other name which related to your activities here, such as, say, "Spellcaster" or "Dead Editor"? After you earn one, of course!
Just a suggestion! :)

If I ever get one it'll proably be 'Gamer Jedi Ranger' or something of that sort or perhaps 'The Stranger Ranger'.
Just a suggestion but perhaps there should be a monthly vote where people pick whom they believe has 'earned' a Personal Title.

Sorry, but there's only one person who decides who gets a personal title, and that's The Barrow Wight. We already have a system which allows all members to vote for posts that they consider good - the reputation system.

(3) Be sure of your choice - changes are seldom allowe

While it is true that 'Arborescent' is an adjective, nothing stops a person from using a word newly, especially in terms of fantasy. We are talking about Perky's use of Tolkien's imagined species of walking, talking trees, after all. In the primary world, we might not have humans in tree form, which the noun form would suggest, but we're talking subcreation here.
I see no reason why Perky couldn't use Arborescent as a noun, especially since it implies a word play upon "Adolescent" which might seem suitable for Perky. Well, I don't know really, but I like the idea of thinking that our The Perky Ent is a teenager in perpetuum. :D

Sounds very typically 'Downsian: alliterative, medieval, with some application to one's character.
I have to say, though, that I find this thread remarkably funny in the light of the Barrow-Wight's strong policy regarding Personal Titles, that he who asks is doomed to be passed over, and that it is a special honour...
However, while proposing titles for those with no idea, I have to say that I think t'would be great fun to be "Ghost King of Arnor", considering all the "Ghost Princes of Cardolan" floating around...

Are you saying this from experience? Because I think I can. :( Well, that's what I get for being impatient...
Anyway, it's kind of fun trying to help others figure out what they want in a PT, as well as speculating about one's own. I might even say that talking about it and listening to all the good feedback would be a little more entertaining than getting a title. I mean, I would love to get one, but once it's gotten, there's no more speculating on what to choose. It's done, there's no changing it. It's almost a bitter-sweet event.

Quite true, on both counts, as The Barrow-Wight has proclaimed several times, yet discussing possible PTs is not the same as PMing his Wightness and asking for one. And, after all, a thread like this is evidence of the estime with which some Downers regard the conferring of a Personal Title and as such I suspect it works within his sense of Wight things. ;)
EDIT: And rather than "His Perkiness", something more Downish might be þe Perkiness. After all, we have The Perilous Poet and The Squatter of Amon Rüdh, but no one I think has yet used any of the Old English letters. :smokin:

Hmm... and speaking of Werewolf, I'm surprised no one has gone with a Werewolfish title yet...I don't think anybody will. Werewolf participation is only a small part of Downs membership, which is only a small part of what makes each one of us a person. No matter what the sleepless nights say. ;)

As for me, I had already decided mine (yes I did get the PM) so you should see it fairly soon. :D

Many felicitations to all who received their invitation!
Glirdan as for the wandering wordsmyth I am a fan of aliteration (see my PT) but I personally would feel a bit presumptious with such a claim in the midst of many Downers ie. Davem, HI, Lal, Esty, SpM, Boro, Eomer, Kuru etc...But to each his own, I don't often read the role playing game so perhaps you write a lot there. Otherwise I would look to you comical and spirited side. My impression of you is that you have endless energy :D
Again congratulations and most importantly you must like you decision nobody else has to. When I made my decision I solicited the aid of a couple of friends who I knew would give constructive feedback and that helped me out. As did thesarus.com (http://thesaurus.reference.com/).

Thank you morm, and I think I might have found one which suits my personality and has aliteration. How's Energetic Eidolon?
Glirdan
08-19-2006, 11:08 AM
Grrrr!! Okay, now I have three that I have to choose between: Wandering Wordsmyth, Energetic Eidolon (which I don't want to use cuz Di has Eidolon in hers...) and Energetic Essence. Grrr!!! I'm so torn cuz I like all three!!
Thinlómien
08-19-2006, 11:57 AM
Nice ideas all, Glirdy. If you don't want the eidolon 'cos Di has it, why don't you take it away from your list? ;) Makes your life easier, dear brother.
Wandering Wordsmyth sounds a tiny bit better than Energetic Essence but in my humble opinion the latter describes you better. So, if I was to give you advise, I'd say that take the Energetic Essence. Anyway, the choice is yours! Have fun with it! :D

I've also been offered a title this round! :)
I"m not quite sure what I want to pick. A few ideas...
Babbling brook - advantage of being water related, which goes with my screen name. And I do have a tendency to babble. :p Association with the vocal stream Nimrodel.
On a similar note, Voice in the Water has a nice ring to it, but might be too close to saying I'm Ulmo.
Whispering Willow - sounds nice, but I'm not sure I want to be associated with Old Man Willow.
Moonbeam on the Mist. Just a nice visual image. :)
I'm not sure if I want to pick one of these or puzzle over it a while longer in hopes of coming up with something more creative. Decisions!

Just a little early to think about this... Just a bit... Well, I have always been a megalomaniac. But I shouldn't be hasty, as I have an eternity accomplish my quest for the title Hollow Humorist (or Hollowed Humorist)... That might be too RL for this, but... I feel like that now.

I so swore I wouldn't tell anyone the significance of these, and see if anyone other than Celuien could guess it. But I'm far to pleased with myself for thinking it up (and finding it conveniently 24 characters) not to share why I have a dual title.
It's from the Idylls of the King, by my all-time favorite poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In the chapter telling the story of Lancelot and Elaine, Lancelot, trying to assuage his lover's curiousity and jealousy towards the young and pure Elaine, tells Guinevere she is the "pearl of beauty".
Elaine, of course, is the lily maid from the moment she appears, and is even described as such as she lays on her barge on her final journey to Camelot.
Guinevere, Gwinever, Gwenhofyr...however you spell it, Jennifer is the same name. And Elaine is my middle name. It always fascinated me that I bear the names of both of Lancelot's lovers, and I always felt a special connection with them, but never with Lancelot, the quintessential knight, and instrument of both their dooms. And, while I'm not crazy, I often feel as though I am divided between two worldviews: one cynical, jaded, and a bit hedonistic, and the other pure, innocent, and idealistic. This is probably normal.
But The Pearl, the Lily Maid is me. It took me a long time to think of it, but I think it's perfect.
EDIT: What's really fascinating is that both names mean the same thing: white and fair and white and smooth, respectively. (And both pearls and lilies reflect that.) Jennifer is Welsh, but Elaine is an Anglization of Helen, referring to the moon.

I have been giving this a little thought, just incase some day I must pick a title. I am just curious to see what others think of me....I need a word that suits me and preceeds Feline, so it would be _____ Feline any thoughts? :)

Not that I think that I will be rewarded with a personal title within years (considering my post frequency and quality), but I'm a bit curious. Is there an actual limit in post number that you have to pass? And when have you that's been rewarded gotten your title? What's the "record", both in time on The Downs and in posts, for someone to get a title? I really envy you all!
And Valier, just some thoughts... How about:
Fallen Feline (dark and foreboding, like it should be on the downs :))
Furry Feline (a bit cuter, as are the next)
Friendly Feline
Frantic Feline
Former Feline (again, a connection to our undead society)
Feared Feline
Forsaken Feline
The possibilities are endless!
If I ever get one, I'd like to connect my title to something balrog-ish. Something about shadow or flame maybe... How about Shadowed Silhouette? Or maybe Soaring Shadow, because they can soar, can't they? ;) What do you think? (NOT if they can soar or not, but tips for a title...)

Is there an actual limit in post number that you have to pass? And when have you that's been rewarded gotten your title?
Well, usually a member has to reach the status of Ghost Prince, which I believe is 500 posts, before being eligible for a PT. In my years at the Downs, I have seen a few exceptions for very highly respected members who are extremely outstanding in quality of posts rather than quantity, but that is rare.
My first year on the BD, I was a very active member and managed to get to 500 posts within the year. If I remember correctly, it was a couple weeks after my first deathday (June 2003) I was offered a PT. I believe I had around 600 posts at the time.
Even though you need to get to 500 posts (with the rare exceptions) to even be considered, it really isn't quantity that matters. I've seen members with over 2,000 posts who didn't yet have a PT....

But I didn't know about the 500 post rule (or maybe rather policy?). Thanks for the information! Now I have to go and write a few hundred, great, high quality posts and spread them around this place! :)

Yes, some of them probably are those rare exceptions. Also, some of the older members who got their PTs over two years ago probably had more posts at one time. I think back when the site was changed several posts were lost. I know at one time I reached 1,000 posts- after the change I lost around 200.

But mainly it's about music and the creation - the creation of music in the first instance. That is so much of me.
But it really took its time. I went all over again with different possibilities and asked a hundred fellows here about what to do with it.
In the end Spm was right. The right one came at the "last minute" and just felt right. I had many candidates for it, one of the last was "Apple from Turin's tree", kind of relating to the Finnish origins of the story of Turin in the Kalevala, the Finnish folk epic Tolkien knew very well and from which he took many of the elvish words from (like Silmarils - being derivative from the Ilmarinen, the smith of the epic and so forth) - and which origins Rune already doubted (thanks Rune for your perspective!)...
