another quote game.
You have to identify the speaker, the insulted, and the referrence (if there is one) of the insulting quote from a Tolkien book. correct guess goes next.
to start off

{qoute] dost thou desire the whole world for thy belly [/quote]

Edit: excuse me if for stating the obvious.

Nope, not that, sorry.

This thread seems to be dying....so here's an easy one to start it up again:

Club-foot

I actually felt really bad for the recipient of that one. I almost cried.

Sleepy Ranger

To get this moving again I believe I shall give you an easy one. Almost too easy in fact...

Gandalf to Pippin in Moria.

the previous one is Turin Turambar to Brandir the Lame

Sleepy Ranger
08-21-2006, 02:03 AM
Heh... maybe it isn't that easy. Gandalf to Pippin in Moria is not what I'm looking for.

Dimturiel
08-21-2006, 05:18 AM
Gandalf to Pippin in Isengard, then?

Sleepy Ranger
08-21-2006, 05:36 AM
Gandalf to Pippin in Isengard, then?

Ah, Dimturiel! It has been a while. Yes, that is it. Your turn.

Annatar!
08-21-2006, 06:42 AM
Can someone please quote the passage where Gandalf says to Pippin in Isengard "fool of a took?????? double checking it is found in Moria just after Pippin drops a stone into a well, can't seem to find it in any passages that take place in Isengard with the necessary charatcers. Gandalf does call Pippin a tom-fool of a Took though, (without being pedantic)

Sleepy Ranger
08-21-2006, 09:06 AM
It is the 'tom-fool of a Took' quote. I just have an annoying habit of shortening/cutting away quotes like that. Just to make it a bit more challenging for the others. :)

Not like I'd cut words into half at random. Just in cases like this one where you can mistake it with something else. Its not the first time I've been tricksy at Quotes. :p

Anyway, welcome to the Barrow-Downs and I hope you have a good stay. I'll be looking forward to seeing more of you in Quotes.

Do you need a hint? ;) It's from one of the Minor Works...
Or are they not included in this thread? :(

Evisse the Blue
09-05-2006, 07:03 AM
They should be included imo, otherwise we'll run out of quotes to use...

But I think we're gonna need another hint to get this one. :)

Look in the poems... ;)

Glirdan
09-05-2006, 01:24 PM

Guinevere

"The Hobbit" is not one of the Minor Works ;)

Glirdan

Guinevere
09-22-2006, 03:03 PM
Hm, it looks like I have killed this thread with this quote :(

It's from "Tales from the Perilous Realm" in one of the poems.

But if nobody gets it soon, I'll solve it and post another "insult" from LotR

Sleepy Ranger
09-23-2006, 09:00 AM
Wish I could help but I have most of the minor works, with UT being the only one that comes to mind.

Guinevere
10-06-2006, 08:23 AM
Still nobody? Well, I'll tell you then.
Tom Bombadil calls Farmer Maggot "Penny-wise tub-on-legs!" in "Bombadil goes boating"

Now come, you filth!

I'm bored, so here goes... Are movie insults allowed? I don't know if this is in the books...

You sea rats!

That was uttered by the Orc with the interesting headpiece at the docks to whom he thought was a ship full of Corsairs (but was actually Aragorn and friends). The exact quote is: "Late as usual, pirate scum! There's knife work here needs doing. Come on, you sea rats! Get out off your ships!"

"stick-at-nought"

Guinevere
06-22-2007, 10:25 AM
That's Bill Farney to the Hobbits, about Aragorn, when they are leaving Bree.

"I suppose you know who you've taken up with? That's Stick-at-naught Strider, that is!"

Morthoron

That's Bill Farney to the Hobbits, about Aragorn, when they are leaving Bree.

"I suppose you know who you've taken up with? That's Stick-at-naught Strider, that is!"

You are right, It was Bill Ferney. And it is spelled 'nought' in the book, by the way, which is a variation of 'naught' (at least in the worn out 1978 Ballantine paperback edition I have on my desk -- too lazy to go look through my hardbound editions atm).

Guinevere
06-25-2007, 07:25 AM
Thank you!
(Sorry I misspelled Bill, and yes, in my Harper Collins copy it's spelled "naught".)

...numbskulls!

Thank you!
(Sorry I misspelled Bill, and yes, in my Harper Collins copy it's spelled "naught".)

(btw, your signature fits this thread nicely, Morthoron! :D )

*The Dark Elf bows*

I referred to two hardbound copies I have (one published by Allen and Unwin, and the other by HarperCollins), and each have the spelling as 'naught'. Only the Ballantine paperback version has the spelling as 'nought'. Someone did not do a proper proofreading job!

Anyway, the quote you offer is found here:

"'Rope!' cried Sam, talking wildly to himself in his excitement and
relief. 'Well, if I don't deserve to be hung on the end of one as a
warning to numbskulls! You're nowt but a ninnyhammer, Sam Gamgee: that's
what the Gaffer said to me often enough, it being a word of his. Rope!''

Guinevere
06-27-2007, 05:40 AM
That was probably too easy for you, Morthoron !
(And we can't use "ninnyhammer" here anymore now ;) )

Morthoron
06-27-2007, 10:42 AM
Sorry about adding 'ninnyhammer'. Such a waste of a perfectly good insult.

...a phantom designed in the folly of their hearts...

Guinevere

Oops! I had quite forgotten about that thread :( but let's revive it now, shall we?

"My dear tender little fools!" was the exact quote, but that would have given too much away. "Tender" was already enough to put me on the track. :)

Yep, that's the one:D. Go ahead.

The whole quote was:
"Saruman is a fool, and a dirty treacherous fool. But the eye is on him."

Azaghâl
05-07-2008, 03:42 PM
You're right. As to the location, somewhere on the plains of Rohan should be enough since I am now far too sleepy to check the chapter or the chronology.

Your turn now. :)

Maedhros_the_Tall
06-01-2008, 02:48 PM
Admittedly its not my turn, but this thread looks like allot of fun, and it has apparently been quiet for a long time! Therefore I shall have a go!! My quote is easy enough :)

"Woodwose"

Guinevere
06-10-2008, 12:45 PM
That would be Saeros about Túrin, spoken to Mablung I believe.

Maedhros_the_Tall
06-10-2008, 01:11 PM
Yup, thats right! I was thinking of Saeros saying it to Turin, after he threw the vessel at Saeros, but he also says it about Turin to Mablung right after!!

Your turn Guinevere

Guinevere
06-10-2008, 02:26 PM
Thank you, Maedhros!

Guinevere

I think that was Denethor telling Gandalf that he (Denethor) didn't want to be the dotard chamberlain of an upstart (meaning Aragorn) (right before he jumped on his pire)
Btw, welcome back, Evisse! nice to see you posting again in the Downs!

Evisse the Blue

And of course you are correct about the quote.

Guinevere
01-18-2011, 01:58 PM

That would be the big fighting orc to the small tracker orc in Mordor, overheard by Frodo and Sam.

(except from the minor works.)

Galadriel55
02-20-2011, 10:49 AM
You are absolutely correct, Guinevere!:D

Maybe there is something that someone thought but not said, if that could be considered an insult...

Guinevere

I hope this counts as an insult:

Fey are you both, and foolhardy.

I think it's an insult. This quote is bugging me: it sounds familiar, but I can't picture anyone saying it. A clue, maybe?:Merisu:

Just a shot in the dark - Aragorn? It sounds like something he'd say to Gimli and Legolas...

It's neither from LotR, nor from the Hobbit.

I would never have guessed it, even with the clue, if I didn't happen to come across it while rereading that part of COH yesterday. It's Mablung, talking to Morwen and Nienor, when they go to Nargothrond to look for Turin. Morwen wanted to search herself, but Mablung dissuaded her.

Well done, Galadriel55. :)

Thanks! But that was more luck than me... :)

I didn't want to use an insult that's too obscure, or use one that is aplied to every character (like fool). I hope this one will count!

Faint-hearted

PS: it's not really an insult, but it kind of is...

Hm, could it be Túrin to his kinswoman Aerin (the Easterling's wife)?

Hm, could it be Túrin to his kinswoman Aerin (the Easterling's wife)?

Exactly!

Now I am puzzled! It was only a guess, but I looked it up in UT afterwards and found the exact words were
"And faint heart is yours, Aerin "

I took it from COH. I don't have the copy with me right now, so I can't give the exact words.

Anyways, your guess was correct!

Thanks!

Methinks that was Turin to Brodda, when he came to speak with Aerin about the absence of Morwen and Nienor...

Yes, that's it, Galadriel55.
I guess that was all too near to your last quote, but I couldn't find any other insults that haven't been used before.

This is probably too easy, but I also couldn't think of other insults.
