Beregond
01-01-2009, 08:46 PM
Will Whitfoot? :p

The Might
01-02-2009, 09:52 AM
This is going way too fast... I have to look harder... Your turn, sir!

Beregond
01-02-2009, 10:20 AM
At least yours didn't drag on like my last one...

Remember the one who disobeyed out of love?

Inziladun
01-02-2009, 11:09 AM
That woudn't, by chance, be Beregond would it?

Beregond
01-02-2009, 11:13 AM
Well, that was quick, wasn't it! My nickname didn't give it away, did it? ;)

Inziladun
01-02-2009, 11:43 AM
It did give me a considerable head start, I must admit.
People here are entirely too good at this. It's a shame there isn't some sort of game show dealing with Tolkien lore and involving large amounts of money. ;)
Anyway...

Remember the one who refused to be a king?

Ilya
01-02-2009, 01:19 PM
Would it perhaps be Vardamir?

Inziladun
01-02-2009, 01:48 PM
Indeed it would. The thread is yours.

Ilya
01-03-2009, 12:04 AM
Cool.

Remember the one who was ambushed?

Inziladun
01-03-2009, 01:09 PM
I can think of a few who might qualify. My first guess would be Túrin, by Saeros.

Beregond
01-03-2009, 01:28 PM
Second guess: Celebrian, by Orcs.

Ilya
01-03-2009, 05:50 PM
It was indeed Celebrian I had in mind. Your go, Beregond. :)

Beregond
01-03-2009, 11:26 PM
Hooray! :)

Remember the one whom phantom betrayed?

Inziladun
01-03-2009, 11:39 PM
Beren, maybe? Betrayed by Gorlim?

Beregond
01-03-2009, 11:54 PM
Hrmm, hooom, well, no... but you are hasty folk, and have spoiled the answer, which is Gorlim. You may proceed, for thou are close as can be. :)

Inziladun
01-04-2009, 12:10 AM
Ahhh. Sorry about that, mate. I had the picture of Gorlim appearing to Beren in my head, and it clouded the fact that Gorlim's wraith didn't really betray anyone.
Anyways...

Remember the one who was carried by six?

Beregond
01-04-2009, 12:20 AM
Good question! Bombur?

I almost hope I'm wrong, because we've been answering these so quickly. But I can't help but try. :p

Inziladun
01-04-2009, 09:39 AM
It seems finding a real poser for you lot is going to be tough. ;)
Well done.

Beregond
01-04-2009, 02:27 PM
It is hard to write a difficult question that is not so vague as to provoke a guessing-game! :)

Remember this one, giver of toothy adornment?

.

The Might
01-04-2009, 03:16 PM
I am not sure what you mean by toothy really, but I have the feeling that you use toothy somewhat figuratively and that you then mean something bad or evil... maybe a wrong interpretation, but just a thought so far.

In that case I'll take Hurin as giver of the Nauglamir which caused the downfall of Doriath eventually.

Inziladun
01-04-2009, 04:01 PM
If not that, perhaps Gollum giving "the marks of his teeth" to Aragorn?

Beregond
01-04-2009, 04:29 PM
Good answers, but both wrong. Although I like figurative language you'll find I didn't use it in this case. :)

Ilya
01-04-2009, 08:30 PM
Fram, then, who sent the Dwarves Scatha's teeth.

Beregond
01-04-2009, 09:00 PM
Very sharp! Take it away! :)

Ilya
01-05-2009, 12:14 PM
Thankee.

Remember the one with the colorful name?

The Might
01-05-2009, 12:36 PM
I immediately thought "Hobbits" after reading the question so I went through all the Hobbit names and the one that seems most colourful is:

Lavender Boffin, as lavender is a colour. Although others may theoretically also represent colours...

Ilya
01-05-2009, 01:09 PM
Ha, yeah, hobbits do have very colorful names, but Lavender isn't who I'm thinking of. The one I have in mind's more than a little taller.

Pitchwife
01-05-2009, 01:18 PM
Caranthir (=Red-faced) ?

Inziladun
01-05-2009, 01:35 PM
Hmmm. What about Elu Thingol, aka Elwë Singollo (Greycloak)?

Ilya
01-05-2009, 01:38 PM
No, and no, unfortunately.

Pitchwife
01-05-2009, 01:53 PM
Saruman of many colours?

Ilya
01-05-2009, 03:12 PM
No, not him. Good guess, though. You're closer than last time.

Beregond
01-05-2009, 03:21 PM
What about Legolas Greenleaf?

Ilya
01-05-2009, 04:24 PM
He's a fine fellow to guess, but, no, not Legolas.

Pitchwife
01-05-2009, 04:36 PM
Either of the Blue Wizards?

Ilya
01-05-2009, 04:52 PM
Neither of the Blue Wizards, alas.

Inziladun
01-05-2009, 06:35 PM
Surely not Radagast the Brown?

Ilya
01-05-2009, 06:52 PM
Surely not. :)

Beregond
01-05-2009, 07:26 PM
It cannot be Gandalf the White, or Gandalf Greyhame?

Ilya
01-05-2009, 07:31 PM
Ah, but it can. Mithrandir was the name I was thinking of, but you were close enough. Thread's yours.

Beregond
01-05-2009, 09:45 PM
Oh! Caught me by surprise. The better known characters are harder to guess. :)

Remember these men? No carrots and coal for them!

The Might
01-05-2009, 11:27 PM
Wait, let me ask this first:

Is there really a moment when men are denied literally carrots and coal?!

Beregond
01-05-2009, 11:46 PM
No, no (well, not to my knowledge!). This question is more...abstract? Maybe only people from certain parts of the world will get it. :\

Gollum the Great
01-06-2009, 01:53 AM
Dead blind: The men who tied up Mim?

Beregond
01-06-2009, 07:54 AM
Hehe, that's a good guess, but not even close, sorry. :)

The Might
01-06-2009, 03:06 PM
The only connection I can establish is that snowmen are decorated with coal and with carrots to look more human.

Let me think then... no clue really what I should look for...

Thinlómien
01-06-2009, 03:09 PM
So that could be the lossoth, actually?

Beregond
01-06-2009, 03:09 PM
Well, there's no hint now that could help you further...

EDIT: Lommy, you're right! It is, in fact, the Snowmen of Forochel, the Lossoth! I've been waiting to include them in a question for some time. :p

Thinlómien
01-06-2009, 03:12 PM
If Miggy wants to, he may take the thread, though, because I would never have realised it without him. :D:)

Beregond
01-06-2009, 03:12 PM
Seems like a good solution. :)

Inziladun
01-06-2009, 09:34 PM
That was a good one, and I'm grateful it was solved so quickly. I'd have likely been tearing out hair over it by this time tomorrow. ;)

Beregond
01-06-2009, 09:43 PM
Hehe, I'll take that compliment. The Snowmen have always fascinated me - not only because of their name, but because they used to slide around on the ice with bones on their feet! I wonder if they invented hockey too?

*waits for TM*

The Might
01-06-2009, 10:12 PM
No, no, Lommy should go ahead here because it takes a lot more to make a connection to the Lossoth in my opinion, I definitely had not even thought of that.

So Lommy, do continue, please! :)

Thinlómien
01-07-2009, 12:24 PM
Well, I disagree, but I'll take the thread if you insist. :D:)

Remember the one who was first the younger one but then the old one?

Gollum the Great
01-07-2009, 12:29 PM
A lot of people come under that category, but do you mean someone who aged really quickly?

Thinlómien
01-07-2009, 12:40 PM
No, I do not mean that. :)

Gollum the Great
01-07-2009, 12:45 PM
No, I do not mean that. :)

Hmm. I must've read your question too fast.

The younger first and then the older? Bizarre. Brain warming up...

Thinlómien
01-07-2009, 12:49 PM
Warm your brain carefully.... ;) I won't give any hints until it starts to look like too difficult.

Beregond
01-07-2009, 12:50 PM
Very, very tough! There are a few to whom the clue might apply. My first guess will be Earendil, who was probably the youngest escapee from the sacking of Gondolin. He was, of course, made immortal, and as far as we know is still up in the sky (that's pretty old).

Thinlómien
01-07-2009, 12:55 PM
Hmmm, nice reasoning (and the kind of thinking I'm sort of looking for) but no, it's not Eärendil. Anything else interesting among your few ideas? ;):)

Beregond
01-07-2009, 12:59 PM
Yes, in fact! ;)

Meneldil. Purportedly the last birth in Numenor and a fourth child, yet he was the first of his siblings to take the throne (maybe they sisters?).

I have a feeling that's not correct though. :(

Inziladun
01-07-2009, 01:15 PM
My guess is King Aldor the Old of Rohan, who became king after the death of his elder brother, Baldor.

Thinlómien
01-07-2009, 01:25 PM
Beregond's on the right track but Inziladun has the right answer. :) Please take the thread, sir.

It wasn't too difficult after all, was it? :D

Gollum the Great
01-07-2009, 01:29 PM
Inziladun has the right answer.

*Brain dies*

Beregond
01-07-2009, 02:13 PM
My guess is King Aldor the Old of Rohan, who became king after the death of his elder brother, Baldor.

Wow, very nicely done! :)

Inziladun
01-07-2009, 09:23 PM
Wow, very nicely done! :)

Thanks much. The finding of Baldor's remains by Aragorn and Co. I've always found fascinating.
Here goes:

Remember the place where lie the small with the great?

Ilya
01-07-2009, 09:41 PM
Possibly the Pelennor Fields, where death lords took and lowly?

Inziladun
01-07-2009, 09:43 PM
A good guess, but not what I had in mind.

Beregond
01-07-2009, 10:19 PM
The fields of battle in Arnor, where the Hobbits sent archers who never returned from the war against Angmar?

Inziladun
01-08-2009, 05:08 AM
You're getting warmer, but no, that's not it.

The Might
01-08-2009, 06:21 PM
What about the House of Kings?

Merry and Pippin next to all the stars of M-e including Elendil and Aragorn? :D

Beregond
01-08-2009, 06:31 PM
Oooooooh! I had forgotten that they were laid to rest in Rath Dinen. I bet you're right. This one was driving me crazy. :)

Inziladun
01-08-2009, 06:56 PM
What about the House of Kings?

Merry and Pippin next to all the stars of M-e including Elendil and Aragorn? :D

Rath Dínen, it is! I almost put "small" in parentheses in the original question, but I thought that might make it too easy.
The thread is yours , sir.

The Might
01-12-2009, 02:27 PM
Remember those descending from ages past?

Groin Redbeard
01-12-2009, 07:21 PM
The line of Barahir?

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-13-2009, 04:37 AM
The line of Barahir?

Groin, when you are here, perhaps you would like to take a look at the Geography Direction Quiz ;) :p

The Might
01-13-2009, 07:06 AM
Nope.

Ilya
01-13-2009, 10:05 PM
Hmm...the Silvan elves, maybe?

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-14-2009, 04:38 AM
I guess you don't mean the mathoms :smokin:

The Might
01-14-2009, 07:29 AM
No and no. Old. Like very old.

Beregond
01-14-2009, 08:09 AM
Would it be the Druadan? Maybe they aren't old enough..

Vaine
01-14-2009, 10:42 AM
Remember those descending from ages past?

Istari?

The Might
01-17-2009, 07:47 PM
Older than Druedain.

Istari don't count as they never descended from anything. They just were there. :D

Inziladun
01-17-2009, 09:21 PM
Here's a wild stab- the spiders of Mirkwood, descended from Ungoliant?

Vaine
01-18-2009, 05:14 AM
Older than Druedain.

Istari don't count as they never descended from anything. They just were there. :D

descended can mean something else than descending from ancestors, I was thinking descending from 'heaven' or something in that fasion. :p

The Might
01-18-2009, 10:51 AM
Ok, that is true, but still wrong. :D

The spiders of Mirkwood are a good idea, although not old enough.

Ilya
01-20-2009, 07:23 PM
Hmm...along the same lines, then, how about the long-worms, decendents of dragons?

The Might
01-21-2009, 04:48 AM
Nope.

Vaine
01-21-2009, 11:51 AM
Just gonna throw a quick stab here:

The white tree saplings, being descendants of Telperion.

The Might
01-21-2009, 02:06 PM
Older. :D

Vaine
01-21-2009, 02:44 PM
I think I got it:

Wargs descending from the werewolves of the first age.

The Might
01-21-2009, 03:17 PM
That isn't older than Telperion I believe... so it can only be wrong.

Look further back! :)

Vaine
01-21-2009, 03:19 PM
The mearas, descending from the horses of Aman?

The Might
01-21-2009, 10:41 PM
Ok, that's a good thought, but still not old enough.

Think before Aman, before they went to live over the sea. :)

Beregond
01-21-2009, 10:45 PM
It's hard to look to a time without the two trees. ;)

The dwarves? Any chance they were created before Telperion? I don't remember what the book says...

The Might
01-21-2009, 10:47 PM
Wait... weren't the Dwarves made after they moved to Aman?

Please correct me if I am wrong there. ;)

Beregond
01-21-2009, 10:54 PM
Oh! Before they went to Aman! I missed that.

This is hard! I can't think of anyone who came in the period between Aman and the song of the Maiar. And I don't think you can mean the Maiar, because they didn't "descend" from anyone.

Unless you mean....erm...someone like the Valaraukar?

Thinlómien
01-22-2009, 01:40 AM
Just Elves?

Gollum the Great
01-22-2009, 01:46 AM
I'm wondering... it wasn't some species of tree, was it? Not the Malorn?

Vaine
01-22-2009, 06:47 AM
Think before Aman, before they went to live over the sea.

Edit:
Before the two trees were made, before they came to live on Aman.
only thing that comes to mind are the vanyar, possibly.
What other creatures existed at the years of the Lamps?

PS. Beregond:

The Valaraukar were maiar themselves..

The Might
01-22-2009, 12:04 PM
Yes, the malorn also are pretty old...
But the thing is for this particular thing... it is said about it that it is said about it to be of this descent :D

Think about the time when they still used to live in Almaren or sometime afterwards...

Vaine
01-22-2009, 12:38 PM
I think I just realised, when you say 'they' you mean the Valar, and not the 'thing' this puzzle is about.

... thing eh, Are you talking about the Lamps of the Valar, being of the age when the island of Almaren got destroyed by melkor?

Or possibly The Children of illuvatar, as all of them could trace their ancestry to the same age and event.

or even the inland seas of helcar and rhun?

Beregond
01-22-2009, 03:50 PM
The Valaraukar were maiar themselves..

Yes, I know - I thought since the Balrogs were a type of Maiar...meh, it was just a terrible guess. :p

The Might
01-22-2009, 06:06 PM
Nope, sorry Vaine. Actually, the idea with the horses previously was not that bad... maybe think in a similar direction.

Ilya
01-22-2009, 09:57 PM
Quite a stumper. is it a place, maybe? Utumno? From whence Melkor's evil flowed?

Vaine
01-23-2009, 03:31 AM
Nope, sorry Vaine. Actually, the idea with the horses previously was not that bad... maybe think in a similar direction.

But I was right about the 'they' thing?
That you mean the Valar and not the 'thing' in question?

New Suggestion:

The Kine of araw, being descendants of the cattle of Oromë.

The Might
01-23-2009, 09:42 AM
Vaine wins! ;) I'll have to rep you for that when I can.

Good job there, looking forward to seeing what you have planned. :D

Vaine
01-23-2009, 09:47 AM
Vaine wins! ;) I'll have to rep you for that when I can.

Good job there, looking forward to seeing what you have planned. :D

Funny, I had already suggested the Kine, but I edited the post with the Mearas before you had a chance to read it.

I have to admit though, I dont think I have ever read about the Kine of Araw myself, having only read the Silm once and not even finished Unfinished Tales yet.
Spent alot of time searching the Creature section @ tolkiengateway :p (Well in a sense, I did read about them, just not in one of Tolkiens books ^^)

Anyway, I'm gonna have to wait untill I get home before I can post a new vague description. I have some books to skim through...

Vaine
01-23-2009, 11:37 AM
It did justice.

The Might
01-23-2009, 09:46 PM
Without any real idea... the stone of Erech?

Beregond
01-23-2009, 10:31 PM
Anglachel? Doing justice for all Turin's faux-pas by, well, drinking his blood?

Very good question! Vague.

Vaine
01-24-2009, 02:04 AM
Anglachel? Doing justice for all Turin's faux-pas by, well, drinking his blood?

Very good question! Vague.

That is correct!
The thread is yours.

Beregond
01-24-2009, 01:15 PM
Thanks! :)

Second choice mother of two

Vaine
01-24-2009, 01:58 PM
Thanks! :)

Second choice mother of two

Melian?

Beregond
01-24-2009, 02:02 PM
No, not her. :)

Beregond
01-24-2009, 02:59 PM
That's right! Second wife of Finwe, mother of Fingolfin and Finarfin. :)

She had daughters? Oh... my mistake. I looked at the family tree in the Silmarillion.

EDIT: you threw me for a turn when you deleted your post, lol!

Eönwë
01-24-2009, 03:00 PM
Indis.

Yes, sorry I deleted my post because I looked at the family tree and realised that she also had daughters.

edit: And I mean Findis and Irimë

Eönwë
01-24-2009, 03:54 PM
How about the simple:

The root of evil

Vaine

Old Man Willow?

Eönwë
01-25-2009, 07:19 AM
You have it Pitchwife!

Go ahead.:)

Pitchwife

Vaine

With pleasure!:D

Remember the guy with the puzzling thing about his footwear?

Legolas wore boots instead of the usual light footwear of the elves.

Pitchwife
01-25-2009, 11:03 AM
Sorry, Vaine, it's not Legolas, but keep thinking along a similar line...

Gollum the Great
01-30-2009, 07:10 PM
This wouldn't be Aragorn's prototype Trotter, would it?

Pitchwife
01-31-2009, 01:49 PM
O Most Mighty Gollum, you've got it - it's Trotter indeed. Would you like to explain what the puzzling thing actually was, for the benefit of those who couldn't guess?

Anyway, the thread is yours. Well done!

Inziladun
01-31-2009, 05:59 PM
I really need to read the HOME books.

Gollum the Great
02-01-2009, 03:41 PM
I think the hobbit Trotter was captured and tortured in Barad-Dur, but escaped and had to wear wooden shoes due to the injuries inflicted on his feet. That should be near to the true story, at least, Pitchwife.

Recall the guy who met with a rock?

Vaine
02-01-2009, 04:00 PM
I think the hobbit Trotter was captured and tortured in Barad-Dur, but escaped and had to wear wooden shoes due to the injuries inflicted on his feet. That should be near to the true story, at least, Pitchwife.

Recall the guy who met with a rock?

Anarion? He got killed by a rock during the siege of Barad Dur.

Gollum the Great
02-01-2009, 04:02 PM
Nope.

Inziladun
02-01-2009, 04:25 PM
Hunthor, Túrin's companion who was killed by a boulder dislodged by Glaurung?

Gollum the Great
02-02-2009, 01:21 PM
Correct, Inziladun.

Inziladun
02-02-2009, 08:36 PM
Thanks, Gollum.

Remember the last who was greatest?

Vaine
02-04-2009, 05:49 PM
Thanks, Gollum.

Remember the last who was greatest?

Last of the noldor elves in Middle earth, Galadriel, was the greatest if I am not mistaken.

Inziladun
02-04-2009, 08:14 PM
Last of the noldor elves in Middle earth, Galadriel, was the greatest if I am not mistaken.

That's a good guess, but not what I'm looking for. This person was specifically described using both adjectives.

Inziladun
02-12-2009, 06:24 PM
A week goes by with nothing new? I haven't killed this, have I?

Beregond
02-12-2009, 10:15 PM
It seems the answer to this question is in my head waiting to jump out. I almost recall the quote "And so he died: the last, who was greatest" or something like that. And unless I'm making it up or thinking of another book I'm going to kick myself if I can't find the answer. :(

*thinks about it*

Inziladun
02-12-2009, 10:17 PM
It's probably not as complicated as you might think. ;)

Gollum the Great
02-12-2009, 10:40 PM
Hurin, who was "greatest of the warriors of mortal men" if I've got the quote right; and the last of the House of Hador to fight in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. In fact the last person to fight of anyone on his side there.

Inziladun
02-13-2009, 08:25 AM
Another good guess, but not it.
Vaine was on the right track.

Eönwë
02-13-2009, 04:15 PM
Hmm... I can feel the answer on the edge of my consciousness... I'm sure it's a Man, such as Tuor or Aragorn or Elendil.

Wait... wait... brainwave- Is it Thingol?

Inziladun
02-13-2009, 04:30 PM
Negative. But you're correct that it is a Man. Sort of. ;)

Vaine
02-14-2009, 07:35 AM
Gil-Galad? He was the last of the high kings of the Noldor, and he was a man.. sort of ;)

Inziladun
02-14-2009, 09:08 AM
No, not Gil-Glad. The person was neither an Elf nor a Dwarf.

Eönwë
02-14-2009, 10:01 AM
Ahh... So 'tis a woman?

Inziladun

Ahh... So 'tis a woman?

Not a woman! But not an Elf, Dwarf, Orc, or Hobbit either. That should help! ;)

smaug? Last of the dragons of middle earth.. he was male after all.

Or Gandalf?

Inziladun
02-15-2009, 12:52 PM
Gandalf is indeed who I was looking for. The last to disembark, but the 'greatest spirit' as intuited by Círdan.
I suppose I can let slide the two guesses in one post. ;)
Go ahead with something new.

Vaine

He saw it all

Eönwë

Hurin?

Vaine
02-15-2009, 04:30 PM
Hurin?

Nice one, the thread is yours.

Eönwë

His death was caused by his escape.

Vaine
02-19-2009, 12:43 PM
His death was caused by his escape.

I'm actually thinking Hurin.

Correct?

Eönwë
02-19-2009, 02:47 PM
Sadly no

Inziladun
02-28-2009, 11:23 AM
Khîm the Petty-dwarf, escaping from Túrin's band only to be shot by one of them?

Eönwë
03-01-2009, 03:57 PM
Incorrect.

Maybe it would be better to say his freedom rather than escape (but the thing is, he freed himself, so to speak)

Inziladun
03-01-2009, 04:51 PM
Intriguing. I'll have to give it more thought.

Eönwë
03-16-2009, 04:01 PM
Ok, should I give a hint?

Inziladun
03-16-2009, 05:03 PM
May as well. Apparently everyone's stymied.

Eönwë
03-16-2009, 05:18 PM
OK. His escape did not directly cause his death. It was the reason he escaped that got him killed in the end.

Gollum?

Eönwë
03-18-2009, 02:32 PM
Gollum?

No, but that's quite a good guess (well, at least in the way of ideas)

Pitchwife

If not Khîm, what about Mîm?
He bought his life and freedom by betraying Bar-en-Danwedh to the Orcs, only to be killed for it by Hurin.

Basically, here you conceal the person/thing/place/word/quote etc. (in short, anything Tolkien-related) in a cryptic clue. This is the same principle as the cryptic clues found in crosswords.

It's been ages since I did this and I'm not sure who it was originally (I have a vague recollection that it might be Finrod, but that doesn't seem right either).

So I'll hand this thread over to whoever wants it.

Do you remember one whose best friend married one of them who are fallen?

Eorl of Rohan
04-14-2010, 02:48 AM
This is really far-fetched, but Beleg? Because, well, Turin married Niniel who cast herself into a precipice on learning that she married her brother.

Urwen
04-14-2010, 05:51 AM
No.
Hint:AKKALABETH!

Urwen

I'll change it a little:
Remember one whose best friend was married to one of those who are fallen?

Urwen
01-28-2011, 09:18 AM
All right. I'll give the easier one:

Remember the one killed by a spouse?

Galadriel55

Galadriel55

Not Pippin. Sorry.
