View Full Version : Lord of the Rings in one word
Fordim Hedgethistle
11-02-2006, 03:52 PM
Here is your challenge:
Describe, in one word ONLY, The Lord of the Rings.
In the spirit of Sharkey's Men, Some Rules:
1) You are not allowed to repeat a word used by somebody else.
2) You are not allowed to serial post just to use more than one word.
3) You are not allowed to complain that "one word is not enough".
4) You are not allowed to explain your word.
5) ONE WORD ONLY
Me first:

Ällistyttävä!
I checked my vocabulary with this one and it didn't give me any one-to-one translation.
But I liked the version of it being when someone is "dumbfounded" - so make it an adjective describing a work, "dumbfounding"? Well, Finnish language works like that: you can twist the classes of different terms by just adding things in the end of the word. As you see, I work that way in English too when I don't know the actual ways of usage of the terms...

You mean LotR approaches ϖ/2 as x goes to ∞? ;)

I wonder, why did you pick choice? There doesn't seem to be much choice in the books at all; instead, things seemed to be pre destined.
One of the themes of LotR is the hobbits, who were previously neutral, being forced to enter into an ancient conflict and choose sides. And many episodes of the story revolve around the characters being forced to a forked place where they must make crucial decisions: Frodo at Bag End when he first learns the nature of the Ring, Frodo at the Council of Elrond, Frodo offers the Ring to Gandalf and later to Galadriel, Frodo at Amon Hen, Aragorn after the death of Boromir, Frodo in Morgul Vale, Samwise in Shelob's Lair (in the chapter The CHOICES of Master Samwise), Frodo at the Cracks of Doom - the list goes on.
And then, of course, there is the line: "All we have to decide to what to do with the time that is given to us."
I would also like to submit that predestination and personal responsibility (i.e. choice) are by no means contradictory.
