Tol-in-Gaurhoth XXVII: Ballroom Blitz
All residents of the Barrow are cordially invited to the Black and Wight Ball.
Black and Wight attire is recommended. Masks are required.
RSVP as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Your Woman-of-the-Secret-Shadow of a hostess,
Thuringwethil (Durelin)
About the Game:
Days = Dances
24 hours RL time = 1 Day = 1 Dance
Nights = Rests
24 hours RL time = 1 Night = 1 Rest
The band will play on, regardless of whether or not the villagers wish to dance or to lynch. When the music is not being played, well, someone will not be able to find a seat, and the wolves will find him or her easy pickings. In this case, being without a partner is more than simply socially unacceptable.
In place of the usual pretend ‘roles,’ you may choose who/what you are going to the ball as.
(All of this dancing nonsense is just for fun. You may call Days and Nights simply Days and Nights, and you may think of the village in normal terms. Playing along with the ball setting is optional.)
Among your partners you will find:
Preferably at least 10 Ordinary Villagers
2 Werewolves
2 Cobblers, each with the knowledge of one Werewolf
Rules:
1. Double-lynchings are allowed. (Subject to change, if desired.)
2. Retractable votes are allowed.
3. The Werewolves work together, and converse each Night, including Night 1. They choose one kill each Night, excepting Night 1.
4. Both Cobblers want the Werewolves to win. One Cobbler knows who one Werewolf is, the other Cobbler knows who the other Werewolf is. The Cobblers do not know who each other are.
5. The Werewolves do not know who the Cobblers are at all.
6. Let's try no editing! :p
7. Keep the severity level down.

When is your preferred start-date? I'd like a game over the holidays but maybe other people want to start sooner.
Durelin
12-11-2006, 03:50 PM
Well, there is a mix...for some people, the holidays are better. For others, they need a game to start very soon. It all depends on how much interest I get really soon, I suppose.
I don't want to close sign up early, though, because I want this to be a large game.
Basically, if I get a good number of players quickly, I'm going to start the game as soon as I get "enough." If it takes longer, than I'll let sign up time be a little longer, and we might end up playing during the holidays. If a number of people are available except for on Christmas Day, then it might be possible to "pause" the game for 24 hours. We will simply have to trust our wolves to not use this time to PM among themselves (I will declare this against the rules), so they don't get any extra plotting time. ;)
Sorry I can't really tell you more. I'm flexible, but this is a tricksy time of year, I know.
As for starting/ending times: I am in EST. If the game gets started very soon, the start/end time can be anytime between about 3:30 pm and 9:00 pm. If the game does not start for a little while, then I may be more flexible (anytime between 12:30 pm and 9:00 pm, really).

I'm in, though I miss the double lynchings.
Durelin
12-11-2006, 04:11 PM
I do too...I'm hesitant only because that will be easy for all four of the nasties to use to their advantage.
We'll see, though. :D
And may I know who/what you are going to the ball as (whenever is fine, just reminding/making that clear)? Only so I have something to work with. :p
mormegil
12-11-2006, 06:01 PM
For old times sake I will go as a Rude Boy they wear sunglasses, is that okay?
I'll join! This definitely won't start before Wednesday so I'm good to go. I think I'll come as a butterfly, unless wilwa chooses to play in which case I will pass the mask on to her. :)
Durelin
12-11-2006, 06:29 PM
Yay, welcome, Kath, morm!
morm - That's fine. Pretty much anything goes. :D

I'll join! This definitely won't start before Wednesday ...
If that is true, then I'm in.... and I guess it IS true, 'cos it'd be rather rare if it started tomorrow :p
Who should I be.... hmm..... I'll go dressed as a fair looking orc.
Rikae
12-11-2006, 07:03 PM
I'd like to join...and it looks like the WWJ game isn't going to happen, so I'm free. I suppose I'll go as an entwife...

This will be a brilliant game, Durelin, and I'm heartily sorry that I won't be able to make it...I'll read it with much interest...

I'm in.
But if this game won't start early enough to end before Christmas (which becomes all the time more and more probable) I will have to pull out.
Nogrod
12-12-2006, 06:02 AM
Count me in too.
I will come to the ball as a nice choirboy.
Durelin
12-12-2006, 11:54 AM
Yay, welcome Rikae, Lommy, and Nogrod!
I hope you can play, Lommy, though I guess we will have to see. If it looks like things are going to be too tight, maybe we can work something out...I'm not sure what, but I'd like to try!
I wish you could play, too, Ang! You were out of the last WWJ game far too quickly for anyone to enjoy your presence...which of course was partially my fault. I still feel absolutely miserable for that.
mormegil
12-12-2006, 11:57 AM
Lommy I could just promise to lynch you before the date :D
Nogrod
12-12-2006, 12:43 PM
Lommy I could just promise to lynch you before the dateI could help with it. Think of the rude boy and the nice boy organising your lynch in time. How balanced!
And surely it would be nice to see Ang again. I have been partly to blame for his two last lynches as innocent, so hopefully I could do him more justice this time and trust him for a reason or at last help to lynch him as an actual culprit... ;)
Maybe, if Durelin gives us a pause over the Christmas days (48 hours from eve to the second day fex.?) more would join in? I mean if that's the case...
Lalwendë
12-12-2006, 12:55 PM
Yes I could be in for this! How much/how many times will I need to be 'logging on' each day? I'll have a stinker of a day next Tuesday, but only from about 9-5!
You need at least one post in a Day because otherwise you tend to get lynched. Otherwise it depends on your playing style. Some people post 10 enormous posts in a Day, others only post 2/3 times. Just see what works for you. But you will need to keep up so you might want to log on just to read what's gone on even if you aren't going to post.
Nogrod
12-12-2006, 01:03 PM
But you will need to keep up so you might want to log on just to read what's gone on even if you aren't going to post.Yes. This is a matter of dispute, for some of us hold it pretty nasty to just read and not actually post more than to mourn for the dead and say hello... But as I know it from personal experience, those complainers also meet their deaths very early most of the time... :D
So just see what comes naturally.
Durelin
12-12-2006, 01:03 PM
A pause over Christmas 24, or even 48 hours, would be quite possible, I think, as long as I feel I can trust my wolves to be good sports. :D
Yay, Lal! Well, getting on at least twice during the 24 hour Day period sounds fine to me if you're an innocent, but if you're a wolf you might want to be on a little more during the Night. The best thing is to be able to get online as close to the end of the Day as possible, simply because having to vote early isn't normally desired.
If you're going to be unable to get online for a long period of time, as long as you drop a notice on the Admin thread all shall be fine.
Edit: Wow, it's like the game's already started...cross-posted with Kath and Nogrod.

Seeing that Gil's game is a no go, is there still room in your's Durelin?
Durelin

Of course! I do not see there not being room...I want this to be as large a game as possible! :D

Durelin
12-12-2006, 01:20 PM
Welcome, Naria!
We've got 9 players, 10 if CaptainofDespair plays instead of co-modding for me. I'd like to have at least 4 more players, if possible. I'd love to have even more.

They were about to play in Gil's game and as far as I know, have not said they would be withdrawing for any general reason. So hopefully we'll have them with us here?
Durelin

Ah, yeah. Hopefully we will! I'll PM them if they don't post anything soonish, but I won't bug them yet. :p
Macalaure
12-12-2006, 01:30 PM
I would really like to play, but I won't be home over the week-end. :(
If we start the first Day next Monday, I'm in. Otherwise, put me down as probably, because I'd have to be really short for three days, which wouldn't be to my liking.
I wouldn't worry about the trustworthiness of the wolves. After all, we're already trusting them not to pm on days without being able to actually control it.
I'd prefer a 48 hours pause over Christmas. I mean, how much sense makes it to play on the 25th, if you get a total of ten posts because people don't have the time?
Anyway, can I be a mime?
edit: PS: I've never seen such a busy Admin-thread. :D
Durelin
12-12-2006, 01:33 PM
Ah, I thought we spoke to so...welcome, Mac! And well, we'll see when the game starts...
It's better for Lommy that it starts really soon, but it's better for others that it wait.
I'll go with whatever the majority of those with time issues need.
It does look like we'll have a break for Christmas (at least simply the 25th) though.
Macalaure
12-12-2006, 01:36 PM
I think the Christmas break will be quite central to people's joining-decision. I would strongly favour a break on the 24th and 25th.

If you are wanting to play shortly and you need another player, you can contact me and I'll play for you. But I will only play if you need me. You see, I don't really have time for it, but I would like to play...but I can't really make any excuses to play unless you actually need me. So, after you've waited a while and if the last few that you need still have showed up, you can count me in.
EDIT: Best time for me is next week. :)

Btw. there seems to be a general problem of the Downs clock going forwards and backwards in some random fashion, so that should be taken account of. Just check the time when your post is recognised by the downs and compare it to your own computer's or watch's time or what have you.
I mean in the end of the Day in a game it's many times a question of one minute when the going gets tough. So should we just rely on some general time and disregard different times the Downs are proposing as they seem to run from over 50 minutes errors to a few minute ones (including the half an hour ones too - my last was 19 minutes off)?
Unless the problem gets solved, to be sure.

Seeing as this is a party, I suppose my role for my role I'd like to go as a rejected band member, wearing a bag with eye holes as my mask.
If the game starts before December 16, there's a good chance I won't be around much that day. Also I'm starting back at work soon, so I'll be able to make several posts a day, but they'll be far apart. Hope that's not a big problem.

Would you do a third wolf if we have enough players and not add a cobbler? Also, will the cobbler role be known after their death or since they are technically innocent will they be seen as an innocent villager?
Durelin
12-12-2006, 06:57 PM
Thanks, Foley! I'll let you know as soon as I can whether or not I absolutely need you. :D
morm - I want to have my two cobblers. :p And each Cobbler's role will be revealed after their death.
If we get a whole bunch of people somehow, I might add both a 3rd Wolf and a Seer, though...
Alright, let's get some official votes right now:
Everyone signed up for and/or interested in this game: Please post here or PM me to let me know which you prefer overall, if you have not already made it clear: starting as soon as possible, or waiting to start until Monday, December 18.
If the game runs into Christmas, we'll pause for the 24th and 25th.

Durelin
12-12-2006, 07:03 PM
Yay!
Anytime. :D
Edit: As for clock times and all that: I will most likely be judging start and end times by the clock on this computer, which reads at this moment 8:36 pm. Yes, definitely quite a bit off from the 'Downs time...it reads 8:10 pm for GMT -5 (EST)...

Alright, let's get some official votes right now:
See, the werewolf-previously-free-except-for-Fea's-lunacy--zone has no idea what this bit about cobblers means. And as I read this, it sounds like a foregone conclusion that they die. Or does this mean 'if they die'?
Is there some place that explains what all these special roles are or do you have to read over all the previous WW games to get it?
Durelin
12-12-2006, 07:29 PM
I'm sorry, I fail! I should have listed an explanation of the Cobbler role in the first post.
But here we are...better late than never? As ever...
A Cobbler is a villager who is such a sorry soul that he/she wishes to bring about not only their own death, but also the deaths of...well, everyone else! They are an innocent, ordinary villager, but one who wishes the Werewolves to win. Normally, the Cobbler does not know the identity of any of the wolves, but still must try and help them win somehow.
In this game, there will be two Cobbers, and each Cobbler knows the identity of one of the two Werewolves (each Cobblers knows a different werewolf). Neither Cobbler knows who the other is, and the Werewolves are completely in the dark as to who the Cobblers are.
They do not necessarily die, though usually they do... So, yes, that should have been an "if," technically. Sorry! They are just like any other villager, though, and so can be lynched or killed by the wolves.

Eeeek!!! I just realized that I'm going away this weekend, so (Unless the game starts on the 18th, I will not be able to play :() If you have enough people to start before then, don't wait for me though... but if you wait 'till the 18th, I look forward to suspecting you with very weak arguments, as always.

Ok, ok I'm in. I shall be a flighty young woman, with an Exotic colourful bird mask.
I vote for lots of gifted and Werewolves, I like the challenge and complications it brings to the game. ;)
Also I would for sures need a break for Christmas if this game goes that long, so say...24th and 25th .

Lommy I could just promise to lynch you before the date :DI'm sure you could. :p Seriously though, I shouldn't play if it's probable that I won't be able to be around to the end, because Dury would 99% certainly make me an ordo and you would all be too convinced of my role.
Do what seems best to you, though this game looks very promising, I don't think I'll hold an eternal grudge against you if you decide to start it later.
(Maybe. ;))
I don't mind when we start, anytime from now is good for me.

May Cailín and I join this bash? I think we'd prefer it to start on Tuesday the 19th (for purely sentimental reasons) but Monday the 18th is very good too.
I think 2 wolves and 2 cobblers is the best way to go. Adding a third wolf makes us want to add a third cobbler. The ball might not be big enough for that. I think you should only add a seer if you also add the third wolf.

IF I play (and it looks like you won't need me) I would prefer to start as soon as possible. You see, I can't promise solid attention or being here all the time during the days after Thursday the 21st.
Also, IF I play, I will be a very elegant, cold, stoic lady. My dress will be silver and blue, made of light, flowing silver satin and chiffon, beaded and embroidered with blue. It will have a raised waist (empire waist, or regent style, whichever makes more sense to you), short sleeves, long skirt (to the floor). My mask will be formed of silver and blue feathers. It will cover my eyes and go over the bridge of my nose, and the feathers will sweep back into a wing like shape on the right side of my head. On the left side, my hair will be done up in braids, pinned up in fancy, twisted buns, with the ends unbraided so that curls fall behind my left ear. I will have pearly white skin, so white that the blue veins show in my throat, arms, and hands . I will be utterly calm (this will be strange playing for me, folks) and unmoveable (Durelin, remember that when you write my death).
I considered all this late last night while I was trying to go to sleep.
Remember, this is only IF you need me.
My oppupation will be countess.

Hahahaha it seems that I've found myself a new nemesis, now that SPM is not playing. Good, I'll look forward to lynching you... unless I'm blessed (how's that for an irony) with being a werewolf. Then I'll look forward to lynching you. What? If I say that I'll kill you at night if I'm a WW and then the WW does it, they'll point fingers at me :p ANd we all know Farael is a misguided innocent with a little bit of luck and some weird reasoning.

Mac, Eomer, Cailin, and Farael all need the game to wait to start until early next week.
Lommy and Folwren need it to start as soon as possible.
Sorry, Lommy and Foley, but I think I'm going to hold it off until next week. I'm really sad to lose you guys from this game!
I won't close sign up until I give out the roles soon before the game starts, unless we somehow get too many people...
Holby - There is definitely still room! Welcome, and welcome Valier!
No, merely I would like to see your name on the official list this time.
Aw, I guess that means pulling out a secret third wolf isn't going to make you happy? :p
Adding a third wolf makes us want to add a third cobbler. The ball might not be big enough for that.
Yeah, I would never imagine three cobblers! If I do add a third wolf, I will add a Seer, but that's all. And I'd like to see how just two wolves do with two cobblers helping them out.
So, for a start date, how does about 2:00 pm on Monday, December 18th sound? That would be in EST time, which is GMT -5.
Will you and Cailin be able to manage that, Eomer?
We will break for the 24th and 25th...so, from 2:00 pm on the 23rd to 2:00 pm on the 26th, it will neither be Day nor Night. If we start on the 18th, the break will start after a Night, and so on the 26th we'll start up again with a Day.

And sorry, I should have payed closer attention. If you really want to play and actually feel you can, I'd love to have you, but you're not absolutely needed, so if you feel like that would be a bit too much on your plate, then you'll be missed, but we'll understand. :D
Actually, starting the night on Sunday at 2:00 pm sounds good, but that would mean we end with a Day on the 23rd which feels odd to me. Still, it that can work fine.
So, Sunday the 17th at 2:00 pm EST will be our (still rather tentative) start date. If that time is impossible for anyone, just let me know. We will start with a Night and all that jazz.

Sooo, that would be 7pm GMT? On Monday? And that will be a Night, where werewolves can kill gamers? Then from 7pm on Tuesday, it will be a day, when villagers talk about who's a werewolf and who to lynch?
Have I got it? ;)
You've got it!
Is anyone else getting the feeling that Lal has been religiously following these games for years and is just putting on this newbie act so as to heartily shock us when Durelin makes her a wolf and she sails through to a win? Or is that just the natural paranoia of werewolf?

Hm. Are you folks all sure about what you're saying? About the first night starting on Monday? That means, all of Monday the 18 is wasted, and most of Tuesday, the 19, is wasted, too, because it's all during the Night. Nothing can happen the first Night, except some chatting between the two wolves. A seer doesn't even get to dream.
If we were to start Night 1 on Sunday the 17, at 2:00 P.M. EST, some of the time on Monday 18 could be used for Day 1, which would be benecifial for the dancers.
Do I make sense? It's kind of hard to explain.
Man, and Foley's death would have been so cool to do...
Yes, I know. With a character like that? I envy you already! By the way, did Jenny ever put up the post I wrote for your death in her game? It was very much fun writing it. :)

It seems she never did... Oopsies.
I'm sorry I haven't seen it yet! Maybe it's time to bug her...that shouldn't go to waste!
Edit: Sorry, had to think through the time stuff...
You definitely have a point, although, on Night 1 that's still the wolves time to talk, even though they don't pick a kill. No one's sure if they're going to be a wolf or not (I have no clue right now, too!), so I guess they'd all best be prepared to be there as much as they can even on Night 1.

No, merely I would like to see your name on the official list this time.
Is that anything like the Queen's List for new honours -- a "Death Peerage" perhaps?
Although I really like Durelin's idea of musical dances, I shall have to pass on this extravaganza as my computer access will be intermittent for the next little while. Besides, if I don't get a SAVE filled in soon for pio, she likely will feed me to the wolves, if not lynch me herself. ;)

How good to see you Eomer, Cailín, Celuien & Holby! This is looking fun indeed!
And the timetable now proposed looks very convenient to me.
About the roles: I can go with everything Durelin wishes us to go with. With this number of players the original plan (two wolves + two cobblers) sounds good.
I will be in a bit of hurry in the first Days, though. I have been too busy reading my students exams (and will be until the weekend is over) so everything relating to Christmas will be left for the next week... So I may be in a bit subdued mode in the beginning. Just to let you know. :)

Sorry, Lommy and Foley, but I think I'm going to hold it off until next week. I'm really sad to lose you guys from this game! That's alright. :) Take me off from the list then, since I'm not assuming the game will be finished on the 21st (my no-werewolf line) or even on the 23rd (my ultimate no-werewolf line).

Bloggers' rights of free speech are put on hold for the duration of the game. Yes: Werewolf is that important.
Thanks Nogrod. Incidentally, a belated happy birthday. Your PM box was full. :)
Costumes, costumes. I think I shall go as Vorgram, Ancient Prince of Wargs. That will require a specially good mask.

Alrighty, I've decided that double lynchings will be allowed! Because I do love a nice, bloody game...
I still need a role from Cailín and Lal.
(This "role" is purely for fun, and just to give me something to mess with if I get to write a death narrative for you. You can have fun with it during the game, as much or as little as you'd like. The "role" you choose in this game will be what you are attending the ball as, or it can simply be who you are and include what sort of mask you're wearing, as some have done.)

Well, Durelin. It seems that you have all of your necessary players. I am withdrawing. The countess acquired a cold, you can say, and she refuses to be seen in public with a red nose. If I am mistaken and you are still short of a player or two, let me know, and I'll heal her up.

So, you do whatever you want and/or need to do, Foley.
Anyone else? There's (almost) always room for more. :D
Edit:
I will cut off sign up officially and send out roles in the afternoon on Sunday, the 17th. Obviously there will be no communication until Night 1 starts, though, wolves. :p

Durelin,
I have not fully decided. I have actually caught something of a cold and I do really have a red nose...but that doesn't affect my WW playing for real, does it? :D
Can I make up my mind tomorrow? What time, EST, are you planning on stopping the new arrivals and sending out rolls?

Since Durelin is not available, I will post the answer to Folwren's question in her stead.
To her, it does not matter what time she decides and sends out the roles. So whenever you make up your mind is fine, Folwren. It would be preferable to do so before 9pm EST, however.

Of course, Lal! Sorry if it was the question marks that were confusing. Was just my way of marking that you hadn't chosen a for fun "role" yet.

As long as no one is going to scream at me: whoever has the highest number of votes, however many people that is, will die.

Sorry, Kath! :( Blame them, not me. :p
Alright, everyone, I have a questions for you:
mormegil cannot be here all of today, but wishes to get his vote in. He has PMed me about who he wishes to vote for.
I will post his vote at some point (and will do so well before the deadline, of course...perhaps I should post it immediately, at the start of the Day? That's up to all of you to decide, too, if you think any certain time is fairer.), and it will count towards the vote tally at the end.
He pointed out that he knows this has not been done before, and if I or any of you have a problem with it, he won't mind at all.
Personally, I don't have a problem with it, though I can see plenty of reasoning that could go both ways.
Let me know what all of you think. And promise me that none of you will use anyone's opinion on this matter in the game (against them or otherwise).
Thanks!

Very interesting.
I don't have a problem with the vote appearing. If he feels that strongly about having the vote in, I suppose allowances can be made.
I'd rather that the vote appeared at the beginning of the day so that it's out for discussion and everyone knows how the votes will add up to avoid a double lynching surprise at the end of the day.
It will certainly make for some interesting discussion...

Just a reminder to everyone, and I mean everyone! I'm not singling anyone out.
Take it easy! Have fun. Don't take anything personally, and don't deal out anything insulting. If you mean to insult jokingly (which is totally fine by me), keep in mind how the person is going to take it (you know each other, or at least your online personas, well enough to know who might take it poorly). Make sure they know you're joking.
And please, by all means, throw insults at each other as much as you want...just make sure they know they're not personal. :D
Otherwise...carry on!

Yes, ma'am. I'll try. Really, I will. I get so excited in these games, real mafia games, too, that it's insane. But, I take no grudges or dislikes outside the game.
