Durelin and Firefoot, game co-facilitators, invite you to play in their game:

Blood Run: A Terror Returns

Historical Background

Around 70 F.A., about 72 years after the War of the Ring and 50 years before the death of Elessar, Sam has left Middle-earth, and Pippin and Merry have left The Shire for Gondor. The world, and particularly quiet places like Bree, is getting used to peace and a very bright future.

Basic Storyline:

Something has moved into the wilderness surrounding Bree, some kind of evil that relishes the taste of fresh meat. Livestock have been slaughtered, some eaten thoroughly. Other bodies were found simply torn apart, the pieces scattered. Sheep, pigs, and even a few cows have all been found dead, and the culprits have yet to even be seen. Recently the remains of a couple pets have been found, and the people’s fright has risen to new heights, as they fear some kind of progression. The mayor calls for a meeting in the Town Hall about the problem, and hopes that some will volunteer to discover what or who is behind the killings, and hopefully find a way to put an end to them.

Having enjoyed the peace that the end of the War of the Ring has meant for Middle-earth, the people are terrified by the prospect of a new shadow across their world, however small it is.

An Extremely Brief & Basic Outline for the game:

Day 1 - Morning – Town Meeting; opinions are expressed, characters volunteer (or are volunteered!).
Day 1 - Afternoon – The characters have their own meeting to make plans. (<--This is where the game will open up at.)
Day 2-? – The characters put their plans into action, and depending on those plans and how they are carried out, they will at least catch a glimpse of what they are up against. How long it takes before the truth is known depends on how things go.

There will likely be a few days in which the group investigates the killings, maybe possible “suspects,” perhaps the wilderness outside of Bree, etc. New clues as to who or what is behind the slaughtering of animals will be found, either during the group’s search, or when each night or morning more attacks occur or other carcasses are found.

After that – The group plans specifically how to take care of the problem, now that they know what it is. They carry out their plans, “the Problem” fights back, there is a short battle, some things might go slightly awry, but in the end the Breelanders win.

Starting Location: The Town Hall in Bree

Likely destination: This adventure might take the characters out into the wilderness surrounding Bree, maybe even as far as the Weather Hills; or the characters may stay in Bree proper the entire game.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The purpose of the story is to: Find out what is causing such problems for the village and get rid of the problem.

This means we will know the story is over when: Bree is back to its peaceful daily routine.

Timeframes:

This game takes place in the Fourth Age at around year 70.

The storyline itself or plot covers about a week, possibly more if things go poorly, possibly less if things go incredibly well.

This game requires a time commitment of 2-3 months from me, the game owner and from the major players. Unless there are major problems, we will be sticking to 3 months at the most for this game.

For any players considering an Elven character:

About Elves in Shire RPG's:

Please use this description from Tolkien when crafting an Elf:

Return of the King – Appendix F: Tolkien’s description for the Quendi (The Speakers) – the name given to the Elves by themselves after they first awoke in Middle-earth.

“They were a race high and beautiful, the older Children of the world, and among them the Eldar were as Kings, who now are gone: the People of the Great Journey, the People of the Stars. They were tall, fair of skin and grey-eyed, though their locks were dark, save in the golden house of Finrod; and their voices had more melodies than any mortal voice that is now heard . . .”

Please use this as a guideline for describing your Elven character’s appearance.

Firefoot’s Character

Name: Toby Mugwort

Age: 67

Race: Hobbit of Bree

Gender: Male

Weapons: A longbow and a short knife not really meant for fighting.

Appearance: Toby stands at a fair height for a hobbit at 3’5”. He is hardly thin, and he credits the extra weight about his girth to his wife’s good cooking. He has a round, kindly face that is tanned from hours in the sun watching his flocks. His eyes and curly hair are both dark brown. His clothing consists of simple, handmade trousers and shirts.

Personality: Toby is a hobbit of simple loves and values. He loves his wife and seven children, which range in age from 30 – his oldest son, whom Toby intends to have take over the farm someday - to 14 – his youngest and much doted upon daughter. Like most hobbits, he loves a good meal, and he spends as many evenings as not enjoying an ale at the Prancing Pony, and is fond of smoking. He is a cheerful fellow, quick to laugh. He is both very trusting and very loyal. Well-liked and –respected, he has friends among both the Big and Little folk of Bree, although he pays little heed to the many travelers that pass through. Much as he loves simple pleasures, however, Toby is not at all simple minded, even if he is less quick on the uptake than some. He is very opinionated and not easily cowed. With this new threat to Breeland, Toby’s foremost concern is to protect both his family and his flocks.

History: All his life, Toby has lived in Buckland, in the same house just outside Bree, never traveling even as far as Buckland. He was the youngest child but only son of his parents’ five children, so he learned his father’s trade of sheepherding, helping him to run the farm and eventually inheriting it when he died (now some fifteen years ago). Toby never desired anything more than that simple life. He married Hanna, the daughter of a local farmer, when he was 34, and children followed soon after.

Durelin’s Character

Name: Parkun Felderth

Age: 25

Race: Man of Bree

Gender: Male

Weapons: A longbow and hunting knife, both of simple make.

Appearance: At just under six feet in height he is moderately tall; he has thin strawberry blonde hair that he keeps cut just above his shoulders, so he has just enough to pull back out of his way. His pale skin is covered in light freckles. He has hazel eyes and a delicate, slightly pointed and turned up nose. He is fairly skinny, though he has a little bit of extra weight at his gut. He is built lightly – the most strength appears to be in his shoulders.

Personality: Parkun is the shy, clumsy type. He seems constantly awkward in his own skin, and is especially awkward around women. He is not married and does not seem to want to be, but he is far from plainly not interested in the ladies. He is a very secretive person. Though he is native born to Bree and the son of the innkeeper of the Prancing Pony, no one in town knows much about him. He is a very dispassionate person, and doesn’t seem interested in much of anything. And though he is well into manhood, he still lives in a room in the Pony and works there, though he has expressed no desire for eventually taking over the inn from his father – he seems content to leave it to his older brother. Parkun is a simple person, desiring good things in life, and not worrying himself with anything else. His interest in the well-being of the town comes as a surprise to many, but a certain part of him desires to be a hero, for a variety of reasons. Also, his service will help keep his father off his back.

History: Parkun is the son of the innkeeper of the Prancing Pony, and grew up working in the inn and meeting interesting people. He was always most intrigued by the different people who came in and out of the inn, and he tended to stick his nose in business he shouldn’t have. Most of his youth he seemed to spend his time with the “wrong crowd,” and took particular interest in the shadier sorts who ventured into the inn. Yet, he was never caught doing anything more than stealing small items of food a few times. The townspeople never approved of his friends, but they have also never had any real complaints about Parkun, so he is largely accepted, particularly because his father is such a well-regarded and important resident. He is the second youngest boy in a family of five, with an older brother and sister, and two younger brothers.

First Post for the Game

All Toby’s life, Bree had been such a peaceful place. The Great War had ended, and the King crowned, and the last of the ruffians driven from Breeland, all in the years before his birth. As he had grown up, Bree had flourished, even undergone something of a rebirth, and it was in an age of peace and prosperity that he had started his own family and raised his children; Robbie – or Rob, as he was more often called now – would be ready to start his own family in a few years, and even young Lark was hardly a child now, but blossoming into a young maid. The years went by so quickly, and till now they had gone by with hardly a care.

Of course, there were always the small concerns of daily life; whether most of the ewes would beget healthy lambs in spring, or whether the summer would receive enough rain for the grass to grow thick and green. But Toby was not the worrying sort; Nature takes care of itself, he’d often said.

This wasn’t just the weather or the sheep, though. An unknown menace had been prowling the area at night, killing local livestock. Some simply went missing. Others were ripped apart. Toby had lost four sheep now, within the past two weeks. And just last night, his trusty herding dog Rudy had gone missing. He had found the remains near the edge of his land, barely recognizable as his beloved dog. He had buried him out there, both out of sentimentality and practicality; not only did it seem wrong to simply leave him out there, but Toby also knew that the scent of fresh blood might draw the beast back, and he wasn’t just thinking about the protection of his sheep.

This was about the safety of his family.

Unaccustomed worry lines had creased his face in the past couple weeks. He felt defenseless against this thing, whatever it was - something, or someone, and that was a chilling thought. Long discounted tales from his childhood came to mind, tales about the nameless things that stirred in the Wild. The Wild suddenly seemed a very nearby and menacing place to Toby, who had always considered Bree the safest (if the only) place he knew.

So far, the beast had been content to kill only animals – mostly sheep and pigs, but some cows as well, and now his Rudy, and he had heard tell of a couple cats that had gone missing as well. But who was to say that it might not get a taste for hobbit? No one had ever seen it; would it break in the door? Slip through a window?

Finally, finally now, the mayor had agreed to do something about it. Not that it was much; anyone could hold a meeting to discuss the events. The mayor, Toby thought bitterly, was more fit to head up the social events of the town than to protect it from any real threat. Of course, up until a little while ago, that had been sufficient and Toby had never had much of a complaint. As long as something might happen as a result of the meeting… no, something would happen. Toby would not let the meeting end before a plan of action had been decided on. He himself would head it up if need be. Those town folk, Toby wasn’t sure if they really understood the seriousness of the matter, but there were others who lived out here outside the town walls, others who had the same fears as he, and they would follow him, he knew. They had just as much stake in this as he had – their lives and families to protect.

There had to be something he could do.

__________________________________

Mayor Hershman of Bree – a tall, willowy man with a large nose and a genuine smile – stood on a small platform at the front of the fair-sized hall. The room before him was filled with worried, excited, and angry townsfolk. He knew he had waited too long to call this meeting, and he knew that still this was not quite what the people were looking for. At times like these, people wanted action. But no one knew what was going on…did they expect him to know any better?

The people stood clumped together, and voices at various level echoed around the hall. Mayor Hershman did his best to look stately, but he found it uncomfortably warm in the town hall, though it was barely spring. The five elder “counselors” that aided him in his duties were seated behind him. Hershman glanced at them, searching their faces for something. Did the people really look to him and these men to help them? They were old men, including himself!

After the mayor felt he had watched enough people – men, women, and entire families – enter the town hall, he gave a nod to one of the counselors, who called the room to order and relative quiet with a booming voice and the ringing of what was little more than a cowbell. It worked well enough. Mayor Hershman wasn’t exactly soft-spoken, anyway.

“Breelanders,” he began, loudly but not as if he were shouting, “our livestock, our pets, and perhaps even ourselves and our families are in danger.” Of course a new set of murmurs and voices not so soft ran through the crowd, but no one was shocked by the mayor’s statement. Everyone knew it was true, everyone knew it was on all of their minds, and everyone knew Hershman never wasted any time skirting an issue – at least once he got down to it.

“I am just as lost as you – no, I know of no one, either, who has seen this…this menace…and though I know that no matter what we’re up against, that we’re going to fight it with all we’ve got-” he paused, and there were a few shouts; not all the hearts in Bree had grown soft, even in this time of peace. But very few of them had actually faced any enemies before. It was Bree…nothing ever happened in Bree…

And yet, Hershman thought he remembered a story…no, those were never true.

“But before we can do a thing to stop…whatever, or, heaven forbid, whoever is threatening us, we have to figure out what we’re up against.” He paused to clear his throat, and this time there was mostly silence. Anyone in this hall could have come up with that thought, he knew. “Now, I know we all have what it takes to protect our land and our loved ones, but in this fearful time, I am calling for a group of Defenders of Bree…to be led by Toby Mugwort, a strong-hearted Breelander since birth.”

The shepherd had already proved to be a loud and dynamic voice in this matter, particularly with what he had already lost to this invisible threat. And the world knew that Hobbits could do great things. Allowing the duty that he hoped many would feel sink in, Mayor Hershman slowly scanned the room, making sure not to really look at anyone in particular, but taking in familiar faces. “Who else will answer the call?” The town hall was suddenly filled with a greater clatter than had been heard in Bree in many years.

Hey, all! Can't wait for this to start - I'm looking forward to seeing your characters... :)

And everything Durelin said. :D

I'm so enthusiastic about this! :D

Just wondering... You guys said you'd prefer a majority of male characters. I have nothing against male characters, but for personal reasons I'd prefer playing a female (I've felt that my male characters tend to be far better than my female ones, so I'd love to take a challenge and make an intriguing/good female character!). So could I design my character later, when I've heard of more players so that if there's to be too many women, I'll play a male, if not, I'll play a female...?

Durelin
04-30-2007, 07:07 PM
If you really don't mind waiting to decide on your character, it would be very nice if you could! At least we can wait and see generally what other people are planning.

But really I have no problems with you playing a female character (and at this point I don't see there being an issue at all) as long as we don't get overwhelmed by that one gender. ;)

What say you, Firefoot?

I guess I've always been a little (overly) hesitant about too many female characters in certain games (and playing certain roles)...I have gotten better, though! :p

Firefoot

I definitely don't want there to be more than one or maybe two female characters, depending on how many sign up, but I think one could add some spice to the game. So it's fine by me. :)

NAME: Grimbeorn Tinuviel

AGE: 23

RACE: Man

GENDER: Male

WEAPONS: Sword and he has a good shot with a bow and arrow, but prefers to use the sword.

APPEARANCE: Standing at 5'10 he would appear as a bit tall. His face bears a scar from just above his left brow that goes down his face, slanted, until it stops in the middle of his right cheek—a result of barely escaping death. His hair reaches down to his shoulders, and is a dark brown, almost black colored because it is so dark. His eyes are a light green, that once gave his face a cheery look, but ever since he had gotten the scar, they make him appear alert and dangerous. His clothes are that of a simple woodman's. He has a bit wild look about him, mainly from his scar upon his face. He also has scars on his chest and arms.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Stubborn and hard headed, this is not someone you would want to argue with, or have get angry at you. Not that many people would, mind you. His greatest wish when he was young was to be a ranger and he grew and became one. His temper is quick to come, yet it is also quick to fade away. He has a kind heart, yet isn't a softy either. He knows when to hold his tongue (even if he doesn't always do that), and he knows when it is fine to speak. He often pushes himself striving to protect those around him, or to set new challenges for himself. He can be foolish at times when he holds a grudge against another, or when betrayed. His memory is sharp, though, he strives to remember his childhood memories...many, or which he never will. It is hard to earn the trust of this ranger, because many of the memories he has are sad. He sometimes sees faces that are familiar to him, yet he cannot recall who they were, or what part they played in his memories. His decisions are usually quick and not thought through, which has gotten him into trouble countless times.

HISTORY: He does not remember much of his childhood, why, he does not know. What he does remember though, are the few memories of his parents is his mother, who died of an illness. His father left a few months later and was found dead in the wilderness. After that, he closed his heart to many. Once he was of age, he wandered from place to place, remembering his childhood dream, until he achieved it. He faced a small group of orcs, there were only four or five of them, and he attacked them after following them for a time. He managed to kill them, but nearly died from doing so. He would have died if it weren't for an old friend who recognized him and brought him to his home until he was of health again. After hearing of the killings, he traveled to Bree to find out what he can of the killings, and see if he can put a stop to them.

(fixing a mistake that was pointed out to me)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forest Elf's post

Grimbeorn sat there, his ears working and listening as he took in every word that was said. He was alert and aware or everything going on around him. He could see fear for the welfare of the ones these people held close to their hearts; he could see their fear and worry about where this creature or, this being was going to take its next meal from. Keeping his face guarded so as not to show any of his feelings, as he had done before at events in any town, city, or hall’s meetings. It was a habit he had, one that he knew he should quit, but found that he liked being at these meetings with such a look, even though at this guarded look could send people wondering if he was the one behind this. He could always say that he had merely gotten here yesterday, as he had, but he doubted that anyone would believe him on that.

As he listened to the argument, he felt that it was very pointless. After a few men had volunteered he stood. Looking at the mayor he stated, loudly, “I have traveled for many days to get here, after word of the killings got to my ear. I did not come all this way to simply sit around listening to arguments and plans, I came here to help find out what…this, this thing is that’s killing these livestock and few pets and put an end to these killings that have been ruining the lives of these peoples!” Then, he after realizing what he had said, he thought he may have appeared a bit wilder and dangerous with making that statement. He didn’t wish to pose as a threat to anyone but that thing that was taking the livestock. He lowered his head a little to hide his scars, thankful that his hair was long enough to conceal it away in shadows, so that he might not appear as frightening.

Name:

Kuric Spearhead

Age:

211 years old

Race:

Dwarf of Dale

Gender:

Male

Weapons:

Kuric makes a one handed mace his weapon of choice, though he is proficient at many blunt weapons and battle axes. He wields these implements of war with his left hand. He carries with him, as a matter of habit, some rather small and generally ineffective throwing axes. His garb is that of a fine mithril chain mail and is always wearing it, even during his sleep. On his right arm he employs a medium size buckler as a means of defense and occasionally using the spike as an offensive weapon. His left hand is now covered with spiked gloves.

Appearance:

Kuric is tall by Dwarvish standards, standing at a respectful 5'2" and nearly as broad as he is tall. He is barrel chested and his muscles are taut and well honed for combat. Kuric is not attractive even by dwarf standards and has many scars on his face and body and is missing a piece of his right ear. Kuric's beard which was once fiery read is now mostly grey with streaks of red. His beard comes well below his knee but is usually tucked into his breeches so the length doesn't always show and due to his apathy concerning hygiene, his beard is unkempt, wiry and scraggily. His nose is crooked and large due to many breaks along with a noticeably unsymmetrical face. He has a large pronounced forehead with deep set eyes usually covered in their own shadow, if they are seen; however, they appear to be a deep blue hue. There is a depth to those eyes not easily forgotten by those few who have witnessed them.

Personality/Strengths/Weaknesses:

Kuric first and foremost loves adventure and wealth, even now in his old age he will not be deterred and often sets forth on adventure. He is neither a miner nor blacksmith, though he is capable at both as most dwarves are. This passion for adventure has led him over large portions of Middle-earth and is known in many different lands. He is strong, sturdy and hard. Socializing and building friendships have never come easy and he is generally viewed as discourteous, gruff, and rude. While he doesn't make friends easily he is as fine a traveling companion as can be had, unless he is crossed and then he will carry that grudge with him for decades or until the offender is dead. If a friendship is made, he is devoutly loyal and extremely giving, by his standards as he tends to be rather selfish and self-serving otherwise. Kuric has only a small amount of individuals whom he would consider friends; generally they are fellow adventures and have proven to be strong in battle. He is generally distrustful of elves though he has made a friend with one in the past. Of other races he prefers dwarves, for obvious reasons, and men.

He is strong as an ox and with his mace or other blunt weapons he usually inflicts massive amounts of damage to a foe, when they connect. Despite his age he has been able to keep himself fit, though he is not in his prime anymore and is not as strong as he once was. He is a veteran warrior, having fought in a numbers of skirmishes and actively fought with Dain’s people in the great war of the ring. He has a great sense of battle tactics and maneuvers however, he is rather dim-witted otherwise. While his battle tactics are sound if he is sufficiently roused he will go into a rage and looses all sense of thought, this has not been tempered through the years and he sees no reason to stop his berserk rages as they have served him well in the past. He has been known to have others take advantage of him due to his less than optimal mental prowess.

A strange quirk of Kuric’s is that he utterly refuses to ever wear a traveling cloak. He will wear a pack but otherwise refuses to cover his mail, which he displays proudly.

History:

Kuric is originally one of Dain Ironfoot's people and has taken up residence in Dale, if his existence could be considered as taking up residence. His true home is on the road of adventure.

He derives his last name not from birth but from a certain battle. He had been disarmed and backed into a wall by a troll and without much hope of victory he propelled himself off the wall directly in the stomach of the troll, hoping to knock the troll down and simply get away. The force was so great that it caused sufficient internal damage so as to kill the troll.

Kuric is familiar with Bree and has spent periods of time amongst the people though an enemy to none he is not good friends with any. He find himself heading to the Northlands in search of real adventure because for those who love combat not much has been found since Elessar was crowned.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

mormegil's post:

Kuric was rather well traveled, even by dwarf standards and had seen many places in Middle-earth and visited a large amount of areas both civilized and uncivilized. He was and adventurer and treasure hunter and loved to be on the move. Little had slowed him down, after a 5 year respite back at home; if it could truly be called home for he spent such little time there, in Erebor Kuric decided it was time to go seek adventure once again.

After the great war of the ring, in which Kuric proudly fought along side his people, Middle-earth had found peace for many years, and while this was good for most, it was horrible for Kuric. He felt bored and needed some adventure. North was the desired course for him. Perhaps he could find adventure outside the realm of King Ellesar.

Kuric had intended to head to the northern reaches of Eriador to seek out trolls, orcs, or other foul creatures. While on his way he took a brief reprieve in Bree and was familiar with the area as he had stayed here on previous occasions. While familiar with many he was not overly friendly with many, though some of the hardy men became Kuric’s drinking mates and they had many good nights at the Prancing Pony. Kuric was ready to set off once again when he heard of strange happenings, Kuric was excited that adventure found him in the least likely place and anticipation coursed through him and he figured he might as well see this out. He knew that this small and rather pathetic, little establishment would need the veteran leadership and experience of an old campaigner such as him. He would whip this rag tag crew into shape and get to the cause of this mystery. He decided he would attend the meeting and give his aid.

Sitting through the meeting Kuric was happy to hear that the mayor didn't pull any punches and was honest with the townfolk. As a whole, meetings bored him and this was no exception too many people talking and not enough decisions. After hearing Grimbeorn speak up about his experience and the need the town would need of his aid, Kuric could take it no more. He stood abruptly, chuckled loudly and stated matter of factly " Bah! You need a dwarfs help in this and I've got nothing better ta do at the time so I'll be helping you all out here. After all I've seen a bit more adventure than the lot of ya and if things get rough ye'll have me mace, it has sat idle for too long now and is quenching some blood." Kuric grinned and was rather pleased with himself. He felt he had a way with words and making people feel at ease.

Finduilas PMed me and asked if I could play her character's sister and I agreed. (As you game owners had asked her if she could find another player to play either the sister or the brother, I gather this is alright with you two, isn't it? :))

Apologies for taking some time to answer, Lommy. But-

Yes, please go ahead with that plan! I hoped, when you expressed interest in playing specifically a female character, that it would work out this way. Lov-er-ly. :D

We're glad to have you aboard and we can’t wait to see your character!

Forest Elf – Welcome aboard! So glad to see you! Please check your PMs for the one little adjustment we need before we can officially accept Grimbeorn.

mormegil – Welcome aboard, as well! Kuric looks great. He be accepted!

I have to say that I find your game quite challenging, and I would be intrested to be a part of it. I think I could play a male character, I actually have a good character in mind and only need to fix a good bio for him. Anyway, let me know if I am in or not. :)

Please, feel free to hop aboard, Dimturiel! Welcome!

Sign up is completely open, people! :D

But oh dear...challenging? Well, I suppose it has gotten a little more complex than we originally planned. ;) But I hope it's challenging in a good way!

Forest Elf - Thanks for fixing that! Grimbeorn is accepted. :)

NAME:Erling Headstrong

AGE:21

RACE:Man of Bree

GENDER:male

WEAPONS: One short knife, slightly rusty from not being used for a long time

APPEARANCE: He is quite tall, with a shock of black hair and brown eyes. He is not a very uncommon figure, and his features hold few distinctive traits. That is, unless you count a sudden glitter in his eyes that can be seen from time to time, especially when he is excited.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: As the name suggests, he is one that always likes to do things his way. He rarely accepts someone's counsel, and dislikes being ordered. He is a great lover of stories, and that would account for his almost constant presence at the Prancing Pony. He is fascinated by anything foreign or out of the ordinary. Despite this, he is not what one might call "bold and brave" . He believes that great deeds are wonderful as long as they are heard in tales, and he would never desire to be part of a great adventure himself. However, he is not too shy either, and would go to all extents once he decides to do something. He tends to act on the spur of the moment, and he would often wonder afterwards the reasons for his hasty decisions. He is one that enjoys being in the company of others-especially if they are people who can tell a good story or two.

HISTORY:He is the only child of a quite well-to-do farmer. His family has been living in Bree ever since they could remember, and he himself has never been further than the neighbouring villages. There are rumours that an ancestress of his once married a Ranger, but Erling considers this only a legend, as he has no proof of its truth. Nor does he want it to be true, as that would mean a change in the way people percieve him, and possibly even certain expectations he might not be able-or willing-to fulfill. His parents consider that it would be high time for him to settle and have a family of his own, but he is not too intrested at the moment. As his father has been getting older, Erling's presence at the farm has been required more than before, and his obligations have forced him to spend less time at the Inn, a thing that has caused him great displeasure.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dimturiel's post

The Town Hall had never been so crowded, thought Erling. Nor had the faces of the people there shown so much concern. Anxiety was not something those of Bree usually felt. The lands had been quiet ever since Erling could remember, and they were becoming even quieter with every year that passed. Fewer were now the tales of troubled times, and only the old ones remembered such days. the world seemed to have become peaceful and sleepy.

Yet now something was happening, something hard to explain, and harder still to accept. The malice-whatever that consisted of, for they had no idea-had descened upon them without so much as the most insignificant sign to herald its presence. It had managed to elude all vigillance, to pass all that they have considered unpassable by such evils, and it crept in their midst to strike with a suddeness that had nearly made them helpless. Who had been prepared for something like this? Who could have foretold its coming?

Who could tell now who had been the first farmer that, going one morning to inspect his flock, had discovered one or two sheep missing or had found their body lying in a pool of blood? And even then, who had paid much attention to such incident that, however unusual and gruesome foretold nothing at the time? And yet, as the days went by, these happenings became more and more frequent, and it was clear that the danger was greater than they had first thought it to be. None could ignore it now.

Erling was among those who had suffered from the terror, although their animals had been attacked more recently than those of other villagers. He remembered that he had just gone with his father to look at the sheep when they saw that two of them were missing. That was how it all started. Yet no, he thought. It had not begun with the sheep. There had been a stray dog near Erling's farm. The boy would sometimes cast food at it. It was by no means a friendly creature-it could actually be quite ferocious when provoked,-but it tolerated Erling and seemed even to be quite fond of him. Late into the night, Erling could hear its barking, and it seemed in a way comforting, as if it were a proof that the world and everything familiar in it were still there. One night, however, Erling woke up and realised he could hear nothing. There was no barking. And then he knew something had happened. He had not seen the dog since.

True, things had become quite serious, and that meeting from the Town Hall was proof of that. Erling had gone there at the bidding of his father. He would not have gone otherwise, unable to see how his presence might improve the situation.

But as he was listening to the Mayor's talk of a group that would try and put a stop to what was happening he suddenly felt excited. There would be intresting stories to be told after all that was over, he thought. But it was not only that. There was also something else, something he could not quite understand.

Till the end of his days, Erling was unable to understand what had possessed him then. He had often wonderer what had really happened there, but he could never get a satisfactory answer. All he knew was that he suddenly found himself getting up and heading towards where the mayor stood.

"I wish to go, too." he anounced, loud enough so that everyone heard him. "I...I wish to be of some use."

He paused looking around him. The others seemed to have accepted his expressed intention of being one of the "Defenders", as the Mayor called them. He, however, began to feel a little puzzled. He leaned against the wall, a baffled expression in his eyes.

"What have I done now?" he muttered to himself.

Name: Eric Wadell

Age: 34

Race: Man

Gender: Male

Weapons: A long sword on his right hip for he is left handed.

Appearance: Black hair that he trims short and a short black beard. He wears brown trousers and a tan shirt. He has dark brown eyes that look like they are always thinking. Unlike other men he wears his sword upon his right hip instead of his left because he is left handed. He wears a green cloak when he is traveling.

Personality: He is a gentle man with a kind heart. At the same time he can be hard headed and hard hearted. He can be very stubborn. Sometimes he wants to go headlong into things, which can be his downfall upon occassion. He loves being outdoors and he will always fight for what is right. Regardless of what it is.

History: Eric was born in Bree. He has been a resident there ever since. As a youngster he spent his days with his friends. They went on adventures to find interesting rocks and they pretended to fight the forces of evil. Then the war came. His father, a former resident of Rohan, headed back to aid his family after his father died. He was killed on his journey there, leaving Eric to take care of his family - his mother and two sisters. He went to work in the village, accumulating money so that they can have the basic necessities.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crystal Heart's post:

Eric came into the town meeting a little late. He lowered the hood of his green cloak and looked around. Indeed everyone was here to talk about the situation that had rocked the town. He folded his arms and listened to them speak.

What had been happening as of late highly worried him. His sisters were still young and they didn't understand threats. Though he had been trying to drill it into their heads they still went outside. He feared for their safety. He knew that their mother couldn't lose anyone else. Especially not a daughter. Eric was sure that their mother loved his sisters more than him. He looked too much like his father and since his father's death his mother had distanced herself from him.

He wanted to know what this thing was and how to stop it. For the safety of his family and their town. Too many had died already and they needed to stop whatever was doing it. He listened as they bantered about what should be done. Finally, Eric couldn't handle it any more.

"What we need is a group of our strongest and bravest men to go out and find whatever is killing everything and stop it. The more time we spend arguing about it the more this thing gets away with what it is doing," Eric pointed out.

The mayor looked up at him and gave him a hard stare. One that seemed to penetrate through Eric, but it didn't phase him. He was use to such stares from men of authority. Sometimes they didn't like his outbursts and sometimes he couldn't help but outburst. This was one of those outburst times.

"Indeed, Eric you are correct. Thank you for volunteering to be the first in the group to defend Bree," the mayor replied. Ericop ened his mouth to protest, but quickly closed it. Certainly he hadn't been volunteering himself! Well, he had been the one to think of the idea. He closed his mouth and took a deep breath.

"You are very welcome mayor. I would be glad to go with the noble men that would join me in defending our fair city," Eric replied with a clipped tone. What had he just gotten himself into?

Welcome aboard, Crystal! So glad to have you!

Your character and post look great to me, except for one minor quibble in the post...the outline in the proposal is a little misleading, I suppose, as Firefoot and I decided that we would cover the full town meeting in the first posts. Meaning that in each character's first post they should volunteer to be a "Defender of Bree," as the Mayor has already called for such volunteers.

Then, the Defenders will meet together without all the other townsfolk around - that's what we will start with when the game starts. And actually, that will be on the same day, so I suppose the outline is wrong. :o My apologies! Where precisely we wanted to start was one of the more difficult things to determine...

As a suggestion, perhaps: Eric can still comment about how they need the strongest and bravest men, and I see the Mayor responding with the question: "And are you one of those strongest and bravest men, Eric?" or something like that. So, basically, you have permission to use the mayor briefly in your post. ;)

Anyway...if you could just add to/adjust your post a teeny bit so that Eric officially volunteers, that would be great! Also heed any other suggestions Firefoot has! :D

Thanks so much!

And...the fixed first half of the outline:

Day 1 - Morning – Town Meeting; opinions are expressed, characters volunteer (or are volunteered!).
Day 1 - Afternoon – The characters have their own meeting to make plans. (<--This is where the game will open up at.)
Day 2-? – The characters put their plans into action, and depending on those plans and how they are carried out, they will at least catch a glimpse of what they are up against. How long it takes before the truth is known depends on how things go.

Sorry - that be all my fault. I hope things make a little more sense now.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: I replaced the original outline in post #4 above with this new version.

Crystal - overall, looks very nice. Just one quibble - I might be misreading, but Eric's history looks rather anachronistic with the part about the war - the war has been over for 70 years (twice Eric's age), so his father could not have died in it. Could you think of some other way for his father to have died?

Oh, and we're starting to look pretty heavy on Man characters (Finduilas and Lommy, your characters are Men, right?) - I would probably prefer it if the last two spots were occupied by Hobbits, so that there is some balance in the game. Durelin, thoughts?

Durelin
05-07-2007, 06:09 PM
Both very very good points, Firefoot. Yes, that is a bit of an age discrepency...

And yes, we are in dreadful need of Hobbits! I agree, the last two spots should be Hobbits. And we really need at least one of those spots filled...Toby can't be the only Hobbit!

If we get desperate, I'll fill in a Hobbit role as a sort of secondary character, but I do hope we get people interested in trying a Hobbit...

Pio - Could you please change the last two open spots in the character list to Hobbits only? (And male only, of course, considering Hobbit traditions.) Thanks much!

If someone is interested in being a part of the game, but does not want to be a Hobbit, please PM myself and/or Firefoot and we'll see what we can do.

NAME: Madoc Hurnt

AGE: 56

RACE: Hobbit

GENDER: Male

WEAPONS: A wooden walking stick, an dagger that is a family heirloom

APPEARANCE: A rather thin hobbit, who keeps the weight off by chasing the young hobbits away from his crops. His brown hair is rather long, and curls in a tangled mop.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Madoc is a rather internal hobbit, yet that doesnt stop him from making a name for himself. He is well known in Buckland for his simple pleasures and quick wit. Nights will usually find him sitting outside his door gazing at the stars while enjoying his pipe. Madoc has lately felt that he needs to get up and see something new, if only for a short time.

HISTORY: Madoc has lived in Hobbiton before coming to his current homestead. He is a farmer, yet his 5 sons do most of the work. He is the oldest son in his family, and has always felt a responsibility for his siblings, especially his youngest sister, Rose
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Newsman's post

Madoc had always lived a good life. He had a beautiful family, a laid back and easy-going lifestyle, many friends. What more could a hobbit ask for? Yet many a night had found him sitting outside with his pipe looking at the stars and questioning himself. Something had grown inside him, could it be what had caused that hobbit to leave so long ago...what was his name, Bilbo?

That was when it was still safe to be outside at night. Lately things had grown dangerous, something new to people around here. Livestock were turning up dead, and even Toby Mugwort's dog had been killed. His own dog seemed nervous outside.

Madoc had a family to think of, and that was what had driven him to the town meeting. He could barely contain himself with how long the mayor had waited to address this issue. Yet he kept himself in check, and the anger slowly dissapated. The meeting progressed, and the plan of action was announced. Toby was to lead a group to find this "thing". As man and hobbit alike argued over the outcome, and who should join, Madoc stayed quiet in his seat.

Madoc respected Toby quite alot, but he really couldn't see himself doing something this daring. He stood up to go, but was pushed forward in the ruckus, his hand went up and the Mayor called him out. "Madoc Hurnt! Are you volunteering to join this cause?" The old mayor bellowed.

It took a moment for the words to sink in. Madoc stammered a reply. "Well, no...I...well I mean..." Suddenly that feeling that he needed something more took over, and the yearning for adventure rose. "I mean YES, yes I am." What was done was done, this was going to be very interesting.

Newsman - Great bio, but there's one thing we have to straighten out. Please keep an eye on your PM box. ;)

mormegil - Very nice post! If I can ask one little thing - could you briefly place Kuric at the town meeting specifically, and mention how he volunteers (if he speaks out himself, if he just raises his hand or something - though you don't need to get specific unless you'd like to).

I don't mean to be picky, but as we will be going straight from the town meeting to the meeting of the "Defenders," I'd like it to be as straight of a transition as possible from the first posts to the start of the game, if that makes sense... But anyway - one sentence will really do for that as far as I'm concerned.

NAME: Robby Twofoot.

AGE: 29

RACE: Hobbit

GENDER: Male

WEAPONS: Weapons? They are such ungainly and unwholesome artefacts… Or so would Robby tell you. Yet, being a practical hobbit who found himself taking care of the cattle on his father’s farm quite often, he carried around a small sling and a small pack of rounded stones. He also owned a knife, which he used in the (rare) occasions where he would spend the night camping far from his father’s comfortable hobbit hole. Being a fairly good cook, he used this knife for skinning rabbits and other small game he could trap.

APPEARANCE: Perhaps too young to have grown fat as most hobbits invariably do, Robby is rather slim and perhaps even “muscular” if such term could ever be applied to a hobbit. Of course, this is said in no conventional way, as there is some extra padding around his waist. With curly brown hair, dark brown eyes and red cheeks there is not much that distinguishes him from other hobbits.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Perhaps because of his rather average looks Robby has always been one to take some risks and draw some attention to himself. Of course, so far, these risks have been only furtive excursions to Farmer Rowan’s strawberry and raspberry fields and the occasional night spent camping and telling stories by the campfire with a few of his friends.

HISTORY: Being the only sun of Rory and Betsy Twofoot, Robby has always been well looked after. In the opinion of some of the Bree folk (lead certainly by Farmer Rowan), too well looked after. Regardless, he had never wanted much that his parents would not give him, and what he had he most often had procured by himself. And all of these, other than Farmer Rowan’s berries which he had appropriated without payment (using the word “stolen” here would be too hard a statement), he had earned through his hard work.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Farael's post

“You should go to this Town Meeting son, it will be good for you” Grumbled Robby, thinking of what his father had told him earlier that day. “Oh, your dad is right Rob” had said his mother “it won’t be long before you realize your tweens are over and you are a gentlehobbit. You can’t grow up overnight son”.

Well, how was he ever going to grow up if he kept being told what to do by his parents? As they said themselves, he was almost out of his tweens! Regardless, here he was, looking desperately for any of his friends to talk to. He did not find any of his usual friends, but instead, he saw beautiful Rose Overhill. She was Timmy’s (or rather Timothy Underhil, Robby’s best friend) cousin’s twice removed on his mother’s side, which among hobbits is close enough to be considered a “relative”. As such, she was invited to Timmy’s birthday parties, where she did an excellent job of ignoring Robby Twofoot. Not to be discouraged by such minor setbacks, Robby kept on approaching her, until she finally agreed that he was not that bad a hobbit. Yet in spite of young Twofoot’s best efforts to impress her, she only regarded him as an acquaintance.

As he slowly made his way towards her in the crowded room, the mayor of Bree started talking about this frightful menace that was haunting the farms. Robby had, as the son of a farmer himself, heard plenty about it, but he did not concern himself much with it. None of his sheep had been attacked, and so he considered himself safe, and perhaps a little lucky. Still, knowing it would not do to start a conversation while the major was speaking, he stopped walking and pretended to pay attention to what Mayor Hershman was saying. Truth was, he was still looking at Miss Overhill, hoping to catch her eye.

Mayor Hershman, meanwhile, rambled on and on about this menace, and what they would do about it. It seemed that Farmer Mugwort would lead a group of men and hobbits to find out what this monster was, and deal with it accordingly. It sounded like an {i]adventure[/I] something that only those crazy folks from The Shire seemed bent on doing. He had heard many stories about “Mad Baggins” and his endless treasure, and then his son Frodo, along with Mayor Gamgee, had killed some sorcerer or another (personally, he always liked better the story of Master Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck, two great and memorable hobbits who had fought alongside kings… and talking trees). But that was work for the Shire folk and not good , decent hobbits of Bree.

A few hands were raised, volunteers who would follow Farmer Mugwort on his search for this “menace”. And then, the unthinkable happened. Rose Overhill finally noticed him being there, and acknowledged him with a smile. Not only that, she walked over to him, and in a voice that sounded as harps playing in sweet harmony told Robby “Robby Twofoot! I did not expect to find you here. I thought you would be trampling around with your friends, too busy with your games and jests to be concerned by the troubles of others”

-“Why, of course Miss Overhill, I am no longer a lad of twenty five summers.” Answered Robby, hoping to sound more confident than how he truly felt. “As a matter of fact, I was thinking I should perhaps volunteer to join Farmer Mugwort and the others. It is time I do something other than looking after my daddy’s… that is, my father’s cattle.”

Rose seemed to be truly impressed, and so with a tingling in his stomach that may have been caused the proximity of Miss Overhill (or perhaps the fact that his father would positively disown him for being so reckless) Robby Twofoot raised his hand to catch Mayor Hershman’s eye and volunteered himself. After all, they were just going to find out what this “thing” may be… there was no reason to be worried about it, a couple of days camping under the stars and looking at what Robby expected to be some pawprints from one animal or another. No reason to be worried at all.

I've got a character in mind, but I'm still working out the details. At this point, it looks like he's one of the many Tunnellys that live around Bree, and he's about 34 years old. I was thinking it might be interesting if he had a good friend among the humans, as that is unique to Bree. Any thoughts on that idea?

Sorry to everyone that I haven't be around of late. The end of the school year has been crazy busy.

At any rate - look at all this crew! I am so excited about this.

Welcome Farael and Dunwen!! I'm delighted to have such a good number of Hobbits now!

I was thinking it might be interesting if he had a good friend among the humans, as that is unique to Bree. Any thoughts on that idea?

I quite like that idea. One thing that we'll definitely be exploring in this game is the relationship between the 'Big Folk' and 'Little Folk.' And then of course we also have a nice Dwarf in the mix. ;)

Unfortunately, my Parkun is not the sort I think who would get along with a Hobbit well enough to call him a friend. But...

Dimturiel, Crystal Heart - What do you think of either of your characters being good friends with Dunwen's Hobbit? Finduilas, Lommy - the same question to you if you're characters are going to be Bree residents.

Oh, and Lommy, about your question - we asked for only male Hobbits because Hobbit tradition for females seems to be that they are definitely expected to not do any adventuring. And considering the same is expected of most Hobbits in general, it just seems a little too out of place to have a female Hobbit among the "Defenders" specifically.

If our focus wasn't just on the "Defenders," I would really love to have more of a variety, but...well, we did at least start out with the intention to keep this simple. :D

Pio - My apologies, but I will be getting an extra first post completed for Parkun ASAP. Firefoot and I will start thinking about the order for first posts.

Edit: I forgot about this, sorry...

I will be away this coming Friday through Sunday, which of course means I will be away for the very beginning of the game. How convenient! I hope that won't affect things too much.

Would it be fine for Lommy and I to have a slightly annoying younger brother? About 13 years old. We probably won't use him much, and I don't know if other people would want to use him at all.

I would personally fine with being Dunwens hobbit's friend, but my character is going to be 19 so it depends on if he wants a young friend. That age is fine, right?

I will post my bio very soon.

Oh, I will not include Dunwens character in my bio, untill he decides if he wants a young friend.

A younger brother as a "carry along" of sorts sounds fine with me!

Name: His parents named him Aragorn, after the king that had brought peace, but not liking the name, or rather the fact that he was named for a king that lived miles away, he insisted on being called Ash. Last name is Winkle.

Race: Man of Bree

Age: 19

Weapons: A bow, which he uses for hunting, and a knife.

Appearance: About 5’6”, brown eyes, brown hair always tied back. He is kind of thin, but is reasonably strong. He dresses entirely in grey.

Personality/Strengths/Weaknesses: He smiles often, but few have heard him laugh. He isn’t easily insulted, unless you say anything that he doesn’t consider praise about his twin sister. As a child he got into several fights for things that didn’t even bother her, but he thought were insulting towards her.

History: When he was younger he explored a great deal, so he knows the surrounding country pretty well. He and his father tend a small farm together, and Ash is steadily taking over more and more work, as his father gets weaker. Ash and Leonora grew up together on the farm and until the sickness of their mother they did almost everything together. They have a younger tag-along brother, age 13 now, named Orin. Their Mother died a few years ago, and their father isn’t in the best of health.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finduilas' post:

Ash thought that it was very unfair that when his father was no longer able to help much, something should start attacking the area. Even though only one or two animals on their farm had been killed, many people around Bree had lost animals. Ash hadn’t wanted to come to the meeting, but Father wasn’t able to, so there was nothing for it. At least Leonora was allowed to come.

Ash wasn’t a coward, but he felt very young as the meeting began, even though he saw that there were many other young men in the group. However, he soon forgot himself in the excitement of the meeting. He saw the threat of this new thing, and he saw no reason why he should not be able to find it. After all, he was an ambitious youth.

‘The poor mayor,” thought Ash, “This must be a hard job.”

When the Mayor called for volunteers, Ash waited till a few people had volunteered, then stood up.

“Sir, Leonora and I would be happy to be of any help to the lands and people of Bree. Count us in.” He said this, not noticing that he had volunteered Leonora, without even thinking. A quick look from her told him his mistake, but he saw that it was to late to take it back. He merely smiled apologetically and sat down.

Durelin , thanks for the welcome. I am excited to be here! <waves wildly to everyone>

Dimturiel, Crystal Heart - What do you think of either of your characters being good friends with Dunwen's Hobbit? Finduilas, Lommy - the same question to you if you're characters are going to be Bree residents.

I PM'd Crystal Heart along these lines, as her character is the same age as Sam (my hobbit). However, I don't want anyone to feel pressured to change their character for this idea! It would be very possible for Sam to have younger friends among the Men. And there will be time for friendships to develop as the game is played out.

Meanwhile, I've got to get my bio & first post finished!!

Name: Leanora Winkle, first name sometimes shortened to Lea

Age: 19

Race: Human of Bree

Gender: Female

Weapons: She has a light hunting bow made of fir. The bow is made for hunting birds and rabbits and other small animals. Leanora has acquired the bow from her favourite uncle Mat, a carpenter, who gave it to her when she turned 12. Leanora also has a knife she usually carries everywhere and setting on a journey like the one she's to face, she has also taken a wooden wandering staff with her.

Appearance: Leanora's hair is chestnut colour, long and wavy. Usually she does not tie it in any way, so it can be pretty tangled at times. Leanora has big, dark brown eyes and an oval-shaped freckled face. She has thin lips and slightly big front teeth.

Leanora is heavier-built than her slim brother and relatively strong for a woman of her age. Leanora prefers red and green in her clothing. Sometimes, especially when she was younger, she shocks people by going around in men's clothes, because she does not like wearing skirts and finds them impractical. If she's to go to the wilderness, she's definitely going to wear trousers.

Personality: Leanora is easy-going, playful, mischevious and curious, but responsible and dutiful as well. She can also be quite serious at times. (See the history-part for more.)

History: Leanora and her twin brother Ash were born on a clear winter morning nineteen years ago. Ash, being some half an hour older than his sister, was the firstborn of the family. Later, Leanora and Ash got a little brother whom their parents named Orin. Leanora, Ash and Orin's father was a farmer and their mother a farmer's wife.
Leanora used to be a dashing, tomboy-ish girl, preferring boys' company on most occasions and being too often in trouble. She spent a lot of time with her twin brother and the other boys who lived nearby, playing in the woods and meadows near their home. Her parents have never been strict with her and she was nver taught too much women's work, beacuse she was disinterested in them. Instead, Leanora has helped her father with her twin brother in the farm work.

As she grew older she started befriending girls as well, but her adventurous and slightly mischevious spirit did not vanish. Leanora has always been outgoing, friendly, playful, curious and a little nasty. However, when her mother fell seriously ill two years ago, she was forced to grow up. As the only woman of the household she had to take up the household chores her mother had always been taking care of. Also, even though she recieved help from her aunt and sometimes from even her father or her twin brother, Leanora was the one to take care of her ill mother. The year of her mother's sickness and her passing away had a great effect on her. There is a seriousness in her eyes that was not there before. Nowadays Leanora does women's work and wears women's clothes without grumbling. She's less childish and less fickle. People who used to know her sometimes wonder where has the crazy, daring, rascal girl gone. The ones who truly know her know that the rascal girl has gone nowhere, she's just grown up to a bit more serious and responsible young woman.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thinlómien's post

Leanora looked out of the window, watching a crow fly in the sky. She was deep in thought and hardly listened to the Mayor's words. It was not that she wasn't interested - she was - but the Mayor's speech was very dull and there was nothing new for her as the Mayor's daughter, Jinna, had already told her the latest news.

Leanora was thinking about the issue. Many people had lost animals, mostly sheep. Leanora and her brother's friend Jock had lost his dear dog. What kind of beast can it be? Papa had suggested that the killers were ordinary wolves, who had just become more aggressive, but Leanora couln't agree. It wasn't a satisfactory explanation. Old stories of hill trolls and even more horrible beats of the wilderness kept danicng in her head.

Suddenly Leanora noticed Ash springing up. "Sir, Leanora and I would be happy to be of any help to the lands and people of Bree. Count us in", he said in a steady voice. Leanora cast a quizzical look at him. He sat down and smiled his apologetic smile. Leanora rolled her eyes. Ash never asks my opinion because he always thinks he can assume what I think, Leanora thought, a bit grumpily. Ash looked at her. "Lea?" he asked, looking slightly worried. He seemed to wonder if he had mistaken her feelings about the matter. "It seems we're going, then", she said and grinned. How could her brother have even slightly doubted her love for adventures?

NAME: Sam Tunnelly

AGE: 34

RACE: Hobbit of Bree

GENDER: Male

WEAPONS: A long leaf-shaped steel knife, like those the Elves used to carry, but of Sam's own making. He also has a hobbit-sized bow and arrows from his youth, and like many hobbits is quite accurate at throwing stones or other objects at a target. Sam is a fine wrestler as well, although he only does so for sport.

APPEARANCE: A full 4 feet tall, Sam is slightly less plump than most hobbits, and has broad muscular shoulders and arms developed from years working at the forge in Bree. He is very strong for a hobbit, and is even capable of besting a Man in a wrestling match, as he has proven during some of the rowdier evenings at the Prancing Pony. Sam has a broad, generally friendly-looking face surmounted by curly dark brown hair. His eyes are blue.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Easy-going and placid, Sam is used to hard work. While he wouldn't have chosen to be a smith of his own accord, he knows he's lucky to have been placed in a profitable line of work with a kindly master, so he doesn't complain. He takes pleasure where he can: a pint of ale after a hot day in the forge, tending the smith's garden, spending time with his friends. One of his greatest assets is his physical strength, which is combined with remarkable agility. Sam was forced to learn letters and ciphering during his apprenticeship, which has come in handy on occasion over the years. His even temper is a double-edged sword: while he doesn't often become angry, he tends to go along with others instead of taking the initiative, and he has seldom tried to set a goal himself and reach it, always preferring to take direction from others.

HISTORY: Sam, named after the famed Samwise Gamgee, is the second son of Magwich and Aminta Tunnelly. He has an older brother, Frodo, and two younger sisters, Begonia and Lobelia. He spent his early years on the family farm near Bree, but was apprenticed at the age of 14 to the blacksmith in Bree, and has lived at the Bree forge ever since. While he remains close to his family, he made several friends in Bree over the years, including Eric Wadell, one of the Big Folk his own age. Sam is currently a journeyman smith, permitted by his master to take commissions. He is conscientious in his work, but he'd by far rather be outdoors tending a bit of garden of his own or rambling through the woods. Now that he's of age, he enjoys visiting the Prancing Pony regularly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dunwen's post

Normally, Sam Tunnelly liked Big Folk. After all, he'd lived in Bree since he'd been apprenticed at the age of fourteen to the town smith, who was a Man himself. But at this day's town meeting, their sheer size made it hard for a Hobbit, even one as strong as Sam, to get through. Alas, he'd arrived too late to get a seat on one of the benches, so he had to listen as best he could. Seeing over the heads of the crowd would be unlikely for any of the Little Folk; seeing through the press of bodies a matter of luck.

Some town meetings attracted only a scant number of people of either size, but this one was about the rash of mangled animal corpses that had shown up all over the Breeland and it was packed. Sam's own Dad, a farmer on the outskirts of town, had sent word only yesterday that they'd lost one of their two milk cows and that a barn cat had been found torn to bits. Losing the cow was a hard blow for the family, as the extra dairy goods had brought a small but steady income to the farm. But the cat was scarier, for they seldom strayed far from the barn, and the barn was an easy walk from the door of their burrow. According to the neighboring farmer who'd brought word to Sam, his Dad wasn't letting his mother or two younger sisters step outside unless he or his oldest son, Sam's brother Frodo, was with them.

Many others were as frightened as his father, he learned as he listened carefully to the talk in his immediate vicinity. Sam recognized several voices. He stood up to his full four feet when he heard his old friend Eric Wadell speaking. Sam approved of Eric's suggestion for a group of Breelandrs to find the thing and stop it. He frowned at the mayor's high-handedness in telling Eric he had to be one of the searchers, though. He'd bet a gold piece that Eric hadn't intended to go on the hunt. His friend had a mother and sisters to support, after all.

As talk went on in the meeting, Sam had a small debate with himself. He didn't like the idea of going out and looking for some unknown and bloodthirsty thing, but there were others, Big and Little, who volunteered to join Eric in doing just that. He thought of his Dad's fears for their womenfolk. It occured to him that he was probably the strongest hobbit in Bree and at only 34 years old, he had no one depending on him for support. He'd learned some woodcraft as a boy hunting with bow and arrow. And if one of his best friends was going --

"Hi!" The burly hobbit jumped and waved his hand to get the mayor's attention. "I'll go, too." He cleared his throat and added, "Sam Tunnelly, journeyman smith," somewhat unnecessarily, as he was known to most of Bree.

'Well, I've put my toes in the fire now,' he thought unhappily, as the meeting went on around him. 'I hope they don't get eaten along with the rest of me.'

Durelin's First Post for Parkun Felderth

This is a joke, Parkun thought as he scanned the people around him, a very large crowd by Bree’s standards. He smirked as he observed the mayor and the elder council of the town, wondering why everyone stood and listened to such frail hands and failing minds. White hair did not equate with wisdom.

These town meetings frustrated him to no end, and the more typical ones put him quickly to sleep, but there were appearances to consider. His father was the innkeeper of the Prancing Pony, and as the son of such a man, he had to be just as an upstanding townsperson. And what well-to-do person did not go to the town meetings?

“I know we all have what it takes to protect our land and our loved ones,” the mayor boomed, and Parkun suppressed a snort. “But in this fearful time, I am calling for a group of Defenders of Bree…” the young man began to really listen at the phrase ‘group of defenders’, “to be led by Toby Mugwort, a strong-hearted Breelander since birth.”

A group of defenders led by…a Hobbit? Parkun thought with wonder. This town was even more of a joke than he thought. A Hobbit couldn’t stand up even to whatever petty criminals or common beasts were causing a scare. When men began volunteering to be a part of the group, Kun believed they might have a chance. But then a woman was volunteered, and then a Dwarf – of all people – who sounded very full of himself, and then even more Hobbits.

What a motley crew. And the safety of the town was in their hands? Hah, Parkun laughed to himself, we’re lucky they’re not up against much. Perhaps they were quite lucky, as well. If they were already granted the lofty title of ‘Defenders of Bree’, before they had accomplished anything, this group was surely all set up for grand treatment by the other townsfolk.

Just when the mayor, and all the others present, seemed to think they had a good number of ‘Defenders’, Parkun lifted up his hand with only an awkward nod to Master Hershman, thinking that maybe it was time the innkeeper’s second eldest made some sort of name for himself.

Well, I've got my second post pretty much written out. I'll post it as soon as I finish ironing out a thing or two, but I just wanted to note that I wrote that Robby felt that the mood on the group was "gloomy".

'm not sure if that's where you want to go with your characters, and I would not want my post dictate your actions, so if anyone feels a little constricted by that, let me know and I will change it. Of course, Robby's perception might not be the same as everyone else's, but I just don't want to force a "mood" on the rest of you if that's not where you wanted your character to go.

No worries, Farael - as I see it, you're quite right: perception is perception. All relative and all that.

And besides that, at least I think it very likely would be 'gloomy', given the subject matter. :D

I am sorry, but after much deliberation I have decided that I will have to let this game go and try to ensure that my own game comes to some sort of end as well as aid my friends during this difficult time.

I am deeply sorry for the inconvience.

Sincerely,

Crystal Heart

I'm sorry to hear that, Crystal (to have you out of the game, that is). There are two options: we can keep Eric as a carry-along, or this early in the adventure, it could work out fairly easily that he could just back out of the whole mission for whatever reason. More than he bargained for or something. Durelin, what do you think? Any of the rest of you have any opinions?

Anyhow, the game seemed to be stalling a little bit so I've moved the group on to the Prancing Pony.

I'm so very glad that Cordelia and her boyfriend have been found, though so very very sorry that anything ever happened to them. That is horrible, and frightening...

I am also so sorry you have to go through the pain along with your friend. All of you and your families will be in my prayers.

I agree, Firefoot - having Eric drop out of the adventure soon can easily be done. I'd say we should give it just a little bit and see if anyone wanted to jump into the game, but we have quite a good number of players and I do not know how many active RPers are around during the summer who want to take on a(nother) role.

Apologies to everyone - I have not been as active as I should be. Thanks for moving things along, Firefoot.

Strangely, I had thought that I had posted a question. I hope I didn't post it on a different thread...

Would Orin be able to sneak in and hide under a table or something? Since I have lately posted someone else can add this if they wish.

Would anyone mind that happening?

Good job everyone by keeping this running so well in a "slow" season like summer.

Also, wanted to pass this along.

With the shift over to the new version of the website, there have been some minor glitches, espcially in terms of clicking on links and making them work. The admins are still ironing the bugs out. Meanwhile, BW suggested this. If you click on a link like rep or try to search a thread and can't get it to work, just right click on the link and open it in a new window.

I found this worked for me.

There are at least a couple odd characters in Bree who most feel could well be dangerous.

This is the information commonly known about two such people:

Name: Old Jak
Gender: Male
Age: Around 40
Race: Man

Appearance: Last they say, large man, dark hair, dark beard, rough clothing.

Personality: Jak is known about town as an unsociable body who is always cranky with other people and who has not been seen in Bree for the past ten years. He is rumored to eat raw meat out in the middle of the woods and haunts the wild like a beast.

History: Unknown.

Name: Owyn
Gender: Male
Age: Around 50
Race: Man

Appearance: Owyn stands out with a darker complexion than Breelanders. He is a very stout, squat sort of man, standing at only about 5'6" but heavily built. He has greasy dark hair that is greying, and usually wears very simple clothing made of animal hides. He is also sometimes seen wearing a nightgown or robe of sorts.

Personality: He is known as a man who hates everyone and everything, and who has an upsetting interest in weapons and violence as a precise science.

History: has lived in Bree for at least 30 years in the same row-house on the eastern edge of town, and his house has aged considerably with him so that is in disrepair. He is rarely seen outside of his house except at night, and then usually he is only seen leaving his house or leaving the town. It is also rumoured among some that Owyn was born far away in the southeast, and that he served Sauron as a young man.

As these possible suspects are investigated, this information will undoubtedly be added to...

Dearie me! Kuric has dissed Sam's friend -- I think Sam wants to say a few words in Eric's defense before he starts to wonder about suspicious acting Breelanders. :)

Would that be okay, or would everyone just prefer that Sam let Kuric's remark pass?

Dunwen

Morm and all,

This is what I was thinking of for my next post, in the quote below. My original idea is that Sam heard one of Kuric's mutterings and is responding to that. However, if what I have below won't work with the story, let me know -- I'll be happy to edit. I'll wait till somebody tells me to post it or edit it. :)
--Dunwen

"Volunteer to look good, is all they're doing and then when danger looks at them they put their tail between their legs and run. Bah!" Kuric spat.

Sam frowned. He wouldn’t be much of a hobbit if he didn't stick up for his friend.

“If I was you, Master Dwarf,” he said firmly, “I wouldn’t be so hasty to judge people. I’ve known Eric for twenty years and there’s no cowardly streak in him. But if he came with us and got hurt or worse, his ma and sister would be hard pressed to feed themselves. And he didn’t volunteer like the rest of us did. The mayor just told him he was going, willy-nilly.”

After a short pause, Sam cleared his throat self-consciously and addressed the girl. “Begging your pardon, Miss Leonora, but Jak might not be just a gaffer’s tale,” he said slowly. “Once or twice a year when we were boys, Eric and I would slip off to the Chetwood for a couple of days. Most of the time we'd do our hunting and come back home. But there were a few times when we thought we heard somebody chanting-like, pretty far away. It was always happened at night. We never could find out who it was. We did find Man tracks one time, and a fresh squirrel skin without any arrow mark, but that's all."

I'm working on a post, but will wait till Morm and Dunwen have finished their thing.

I think that it would work better, maybe, if Lommy's post came after Sam blew up at Kuric. She could maybe add near the beginning of her post that she(Leanora) was trying to change the subject back to the point. I just thought of this, so I'm not sure if it would work.

-Finduilas-

Dunwen, I don't think that your post in its present form really fits. Perhaps if you started it off with something like: "As the others moved on, Sam was still thinking about Kuric's harsh words about his friend, and finally he broke into the flow of conversation..." Rather than Kuric's quote.

The other way that I could see this working is that maybe Sam corners Kuric later on, after the meeting is over. Something like "I heard what you said earlier, even if no one else did..." Maybe he was standing next to Kuric? That would also satisfy Morm's intention that Kuric muttered it.

mormegil
08-23-2007, 05:35 PM
It could be vocal, I have no problem with anybody overhearing it. The one problem I have with the post as it stands is that Kuric wouldn't really allow for a pause and allow Sam to begin speaking to Leonora. I obviously could write something that would make it fit nice and neat, if needed but Kuric's natural instinct would be to explode without thinking.

Actually, I really like your second idea, Firefoot. If it's okay with Mormegil, I can set up a future conversation with Kuric by changing my post to have Sam standing next to Kuric and overhearing his mutter. In a later post Sam could then have a word with him when everyone else is leaving.

I will PM the edited post to both of you.

Hello folks,
I believe I owe you all an apology, since I was part of this game and then I dissappeared suddenly. While I would not want to get into the details of what exactly happened to me, at least not in public like this, I hope you understand if I say that I found myself in a very unfortunate Real Life situation and I went through a difficult time, where posting on the 'downs was just not something I was thinking about. I should have let you know that I would no longer be participating, and for that I apologise, but I hope you understand that I was not quite thinking straight and a little gesture like that just didn't occurr to me.

An apology really doesn't cut it, but I give you one anyway: I am so very, very sorry.

I am alive. I could cite excuses for my disappearance, but why bother. There's really no excuse for not keeping up with this, a game of my own initiation.

I will get this moving again and will keep up with it. I am so very sorry to all of you. Thank you so much to everyone for hanging in there and especially to those of you who have tried so hard to keep it going.

I am so sorry to hear that, Forest Elf...I wish there was more I could say. My heart truly goes out to you. :( Please don't worry about anything here.

Welcome back, Farael - please, no worries. I am just sorry you had problems and I hope life is much better and will stay that way.

Again, I am so sorry, everyone, and I will post ASAP. I will also try and see if Firefoot is alright (she was keeping up with this much better than I was, so I hope everything's okay), and will carry along Toby for the time being if need be.

Please, don't worry about it at all, Forest Elf. This is just for fun, and not by any means a big obligation. :)

I have posted, and I hope within the next couple posts we can end the meeting and get headed to talk to...someone, in Bree. :D

Such as...

Name: Edin Cengal
Gender: Male
Age: 52
Race: Man

Appearance: A short, stocky man that is almsot bald except for a few wisps of white hair. He is rather pudgy which he attests to both age and his love of bacon.

Personality: Edin is all about being no nonsense and to the point. He is largely very blunt, but he is very kind-hearted and can be very sensitive to those in need. He is very impatient and likes very much to always be on time. Schedules are important to him.

History: Edin has lived in Bree all his life, and still works his family's small pig farm outside of Bree, which has been attacked twice by the unknown enemy plaguing the town and outlying farms. The second time he found not only one of his largest pigs gone except for a few ghastly remains, but also the body of his dog.

Is it alright to introduce this 'NPC/cameo' of sorts, Pio? Thanks!

I didn't have anything specific other than it would work for Kuric to jump in but the more I think about it the more I think it's not great. I have a good idea that may work though. Since Sam wanted to talk to Kuric anyway, Kuric could be fairly contrary to Sam which would allow Sam to bring it up. I think those two should end up in the same group.

Speaking of the two groups, we best ensure that we have enough active players in each group so that both groups move in relative tandem.

Thank you all for your kind comments! :D Hope you like my character.

Name: Gorin Redbrow

Age: 45

Race: Dwarf

Gender: Male

Weapons: One single handed battle axe, two small throwing axes, and one dwarven made oak shield.

Appearance: Gorin stands 4’2 feet tall with dark red hair and beard; relatively skinny for a dwarf. He is a broad shouldered, and wears a chain mail shirt.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: A quiet type of fellow, Gorin seldom speaks when he is with a group. He likes the solitude of the wilderness, but will join with anyone who is on looking for excitement. Due to his solitude, Gorin has grown accustomed to traveling at night, and is considered unstoppable when he is on the hunt. He is an extraordinary tracker, but not an extraordinary fighter.

Groin often gets into arguments with other people and uses a twisted, and some say, illogical form of logic. He will tolerate any opinion so long as it doesn’t interfere with his own. Somewhat of a bigot, Gorin despises women, but won’t openly admit it.

Gorin has made few friends since he left the Glittering Caves. He believes that his friends should be well tried before he gives them his trust; he would do anything for a friend. His motto is: “A friend to all is a friend to none.”

HISTORY: Gorin was born in the dwarven colony of the Glittering Caves. He was stern and mellow even as a child, and when the time came he left the colony with his only friend, Tro’r Worbleblade. Tro’r left Gorin when he decided to go back to the colony and marry a dwarf, whom he loved. Gorin then traveled to the northern regions of Arnor, where he found few people and much danger, just how he likes it. However, Gorin decided to travel south to the village of Bree, where he could relax and rest for a couple of days.

I think it would be nice to have a sort of recommitment from those who are still willing to actively participate in this RPG. Having never done this before I don't know protocol on this but personally I feel a bit lost on what the next move is going to be mainly because I don't know who is active or not.

So I am active and wanting the game to progress.

That is a good idea, morm, even though it makes me feel quite dreadful, because inactivity in RPGs seems to follow me like a plague.

But yes, I'm still in and willing and able to participate.

So far only 5 that are committed and one of those is out of the village. How do we want to go about starting?I think we should wait a few days before making any conclusions... Farael has recently come back, maybe someone could PM him, if he doesn't pop up here soon. Dimturiel and Forest Elf seem to check in relatively rarely, but frequently. As to out game owners, Firefoot and Durelin, they're both my friends on LiveJournal and Facebook, so I think I'm going to try to contact them via those channels and ask them how they feel about this RPG and how busy they are. So unless I've forgotten someone, Newsman is the only one who's disappeared and who we can't contact (as far as I know).

I'm still in, guys, and very willing to go on with this game. I actually posted here a few days ago- I think it was on November 21'st, saying that I would be more involved in this game from now on. So it seems you have six people, not five.:)

Hey, all, I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond. The truth of it is, though, that over the past couple months I've really been losing most of my interest in the Downs, nor do I have as much time as I used to for it. I have a suggestion. What if Erling goes with Kuric and Sam to see Edin Cengal? I was thinking that as it's about gathering news, that would appeal to Erling most. And maybe I could also say that Edin is slightly acquainted with Erling's father, as he'll be much more easier to tackle like this. This RPG still has hope. Let's continue. I will be seriously depressed if this is closed because then I'll be confident some horrible curse follows me and every RPG I take part in dies away. :( ;)

Although I wished to have a word from our game owners, it feels quite stupid to write a mystery RPG like this and try to solve the problem if the game owners are gone and thus no one who plays knows what's the answer to the mystery. I'm also afraid that without interested game owners this game will turn into random running around woods and town.

I'm fairly certain that Durelin will not be returning to play or facilitate this game. I've sent a PM to Firefoot to let us know what her plans are. (She did post THIS (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=537307&postcount=187) on the Discussion Thread a while ago)

In the event that she definitely can't play, either, would you like to make this game a cooperative effort on the part of the remaining players in order to get it done? Would that be a possibility?

piosenniel

It would most likely mean a shorter game since I don't recall what or who Durelin had planned for the attacker. Maybe something like this:

A player for the mystery attacker would be found, clues would start to be left, there would be the hunt and the battle.

The remaining players would have to discuss what would go on in the game concerning the hunt and battle without benefit of knowing what the facilitators had planned.

OR

The remaining players can decide right now what sort of attacker they will be facing - you can begin to discover clues, make your plans for the hunt, have a glorious battle, and retire back to a once again safe Bree.

OR

One of you ,or two, can step up and become game leader and decide what to do

Thinlómien
01-07-2008, 02:48 PM
I think it would be most fascinating if we decided who or what is the attacker and someone actually played him/her/it, but the problem in that case is that it might make everything longer and more complicated. Most importantly the player who plays the evil (whether s/he was one of the current players or someone who has previously had nothing to do with this RPG) should be trustworthy and able to commit to this game and write on a regular basis.

Groin could, at first, be a prime suspect.

My apologies, all.

I really sort of had planned on dropping out of RPG's in general... most of them were hardly moving at all and I didn't have much time anyway. Well, I still don't have enough time but it looks like they're moving again and at this point I don't think it would be really fair to leave you guys here when you still want to continue. So I guess I'm here.

What I am going to do, however, is let you all in on the intended plot. I think that's part of the reason this game has stalled, that people haven't known where it's going.

The culprits for the livestock killing are wargs (as some of you, perhaps, have guessed). The hunt through the village was intended to add some more action to the game, and as such will be unsuccessful. The group will then have to head off into the wilderness, where the group actually will encounter Ol' Jak (played by Folwren). Then on to fight the wolves.

Don't feel bound by this, though; if you have any ideas for complications etc. don't hesitate to throw them in there. And don't hesitate to move the plot along either... (in other words, don't wait for me). I'm really going to try to keep up with this RPG, but I'm not anticipating having a lot of time.

Rather disatrous. What should we do with the other characters? Use them as NPCs or kill/send them off?

Forest Elf still appears in the players list and has posted in this month here in the discussion thread, so we could assume she's still playing? If so, her character Grimbeorn would be left in the village as well.

But I hope we don't need to write Firefoot's Toby out, because who in their right mind would leave two 19-year old youngsters and a stranger from a distant land to handle the situation in Bree? :D I'm sure they will do fine, but my initial thought was that the Mayor's folk and the other adventurers wouldn't probably see it as the best option...

That would be good, Lommy you could write up how you and the group, or somebody else who is still at Bree, caught up with us. I think the story would be that Kuric is running somewhat blindly into the wild. Poor Kuric is advancing in his years and getting a bit senile...not too much mind you just a bit.:D

Just one question. Are the two that Groin mentions at the end of his post Erling and Sam or is he talking about the others? Because Groin says he sees two tall figures and as Sam is a hobbit, he's not tall. Just wanted to know so I could figure out what to post next.

What needs to happen is one of two things:

1. Groin fixes that and makes it a tall and short figure.

2. We determine who has caught up with us and it would be plausible for Groin to only see the two tall figures in front and the rest are still to far back from the hill to be seen or too short ;)

I think it would be best, and make more sense, to have the original 3 stumble upon Groin and have the rest of the party, or a fraction thereof, catch up with us. The reason it makes more sense is we left in a hurry and Kuric didn't slow down much. There would be some deliberation in the Pony as to what course of action to take and then a little bit of tracking down where we went.

I propose that Groin change the post slightly and either Dunwen or Dimturiel could write the next post explaining how we got to that point. In the meantime, who could write a post getting the rest of the characters our of Bree? I would expect them to wonder where we went an why we went so fast. For them to look around town a bit and end up speaking to the gate keeper and leaving to follow us.
