"Experimenting with Elves and Balrogs, Melkor has discovered a new, terrible race: werebalrogs."
Welcome to Tol-in-Gaurhoth XXXIX: Do Werebalrogs have wings?. A part of the Gondolin mining community is suffering from an uncomfortable balrog problem. Melkor has sent his minions to the mines of Gondolin, hoping them to infiltrate into the miner society and gain some information on the city's defences. In secret, a few celebrities from the city come to the mines in order to investigate the problem. The balrogs decide to change their tactics. The slaughter begins.
Roles
3 werebalrogs
cobbler
seer
ranger
hunter
lovers
some ordinary villagers
I'd like to have at least 15 players. If the player count rises high, we can add an extra balrog.
Miscellanous rules
- non-retractable votes (this can be discussed, though)
- no double (or triple or quadrupule or whatever... :p) lynches. The first one to reach the highest vote count will be lynched.
- the deadline can be anything between 3-8 pm GMT. The ideal deadline for me would be 7pm GMT, but I'd like to hear your opinions on the subject.

Looks like a good "classic" indeed. The only thing that one can hope for is that we gather enough players. Concerning the deadline, 7 pm GMT would be a great time for me.

You can take that question mark off my name. I definitely want to be in this game. :)
I really do hope we can get 15+ players. It's been ages since we've had a large game and I miss them...

Confirmatory.
I don't think I'll roleplay much this time; it gets me in trouble. :p

We'll need to get into the bottom of this question of (were)Balrog's having wings indeed! I'm in for finding it out. And I have been waiting for this Lommy's game for a long while.
But... and sadly this is a big BUT...
I'm going to be in Santiago de Cuba (right next to Guantanamo province) during 17.11.-25.11. where the choir I'm in will attend an international choir festival. I've been told that there are net cafés in Santiago and that the hotel might have one as well. But that's unsure and it's also unsure how much time I would have to play if the game is on during the time mentioned above.
So if we aim for a large game and there's not a tremendous hype bringing in players five per day I could be in. Also there's the Thanksgiving -holidays in the States and the possible need for a pause there. That might help my participation as well.
So the questionmark should be left there for a while.

Yeah, Thanksgiving would need a pause...at least if there are enough Americans in this game. I'm going home for the holidays from the 21-25. If we didn't pause then, I could still play as I will have internet access, but I would be absent for most of the 21, 22, and 25.
Anyways, I do hope you'll be able to find a way to join us, Nogrod.
the deadline can be anything between 3-8 pm GMT. The ideal deadline for me would be 7pm GMT, but I'd like to hear your opinions on the subject.
Well, let's see...that would be between 10am-3pm EST. Since the deadline will be during the daytime for me, it'll be hard to be there everday when the Day ends with the class schedule I have. A 4pm, or even 5pm GMT deadline would be most ideal for my schedule since it is for the most part, before all my classes. I can work with other times, but I might have to leave an hour or two early before deadline on some days.
A question: Will we be choosing roles to play for this game, or do we just go in as ourselves?

Ok, I've had enough of watching this strange game take all away from the good old trivia matches, so I've decided to join and see for myself what this WW thing is about.
Now, I really am a n00b at this, so it would really be nice if someone could explain the rules of the game in general, or post a link to information.
Not sure what this deadline thing is, maybe the time by which you have to have posted. If this is case, then 7pm GMT is also great for me.
EDIT: btw, what's a cobbler?

I suggest you look at some older thread where the rules are explained more in detail... maybe at the beginning of the normal WW thread - the one called just "Tol-in-Gaurhoth (Isle of the Werewolves)". Not everything is there, though.
The cobbler is a person who is in every aspect a normal villager, except that he wants the baddies to win, even if it were to cost his life. He does not know who the baddies are, though, so he has to try to find out who they are and help them the best he can (either by providing cover, or just wreaking havoc all around the place, or at least by getting himself lynched instead of one of them).
OK, I'm giving in and signing up. Who needs a good degree anyway?

Welcome, TM, Kath, Naria and Lhuna! Great to see you here. :D
Looks very promising this far!
I have some hopes of actually gathering enough players for a bit bigger game. Yay! (But don't worry, even if there was enough people willing to play, this will not become a megalomanic Dueling Wizards -type of game, I don't want more than 20 or 21 players, 15-18 would be ideal... We'll see.)
TM - I'm going to explain all the rules in post but I'm not sure when I will write it (I might do it just before the start of the game) so if you want to be clear on these things before that, I suggest you check the Tol-in-Gaurhoth -thread (just like Legate said).
Lhuna - I know. If I hadn't already decided to give out the roles randomly, I'd make you a lover just for fun. :p

You know you want to... ;) And with Kath joining? *evil laughter*
Maybe I should stop this, or Kath might push to have me lynched on Day 1, just to be sure. :D
I know, Lhuna. I can't believe I joined another Lover's game after my track record in them, and now you're in it I know I'm going to lose whatever team I'm on!

I confess - I have given myself a veto-right if the teams start to look too unfair. :Merisu:

Of course. Everyone does that. Sometimes even when the teams do not look unfair, but because he thinks that there could be some more interesting teams generated "randomly" if the random choice is made enough times... ;)

How long do games normally last on here though? I, too, have a break for Thanksgiving and may be cut off from Internet for several days. Then again, I'm new so I might not last long anyway. But I'll do my best! :)

I've played regular mafia before, but can someone explain to me what the extra roles are? The cobbler is basically a citizen/villager who is a terrorist acting on the side of the werewolves, but what are ranger, hunter, and lover? I had them explained to me briefly but I want to make sure I understand properly. Thanks!

I know the possibility of you heeding me is right about nil, Lommy, but I'm going to advise you anyway against teaming up a wolf and an ordo as Lovers and letting us know. If we're going to have only three wolves, you might as well kill the werewolf-lover on Night 1. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. :D

A ranger chooses a player to protect each Night. If the wolves (or balrogs in this case) attack that player, he/she will not be killed. It depends on the mod's rules, but usually a ranger cannot protect someone two nights in a row.
A hunter must every Night choose someone they find suspicious and want to hunt. In the case that the hunter is killed, he/she has the opportunity of taking down a wolf. Again, this role varies each game, so certain details will depend on the mod.
The lovers are two players who are bound to one another. If one dies, so does the other. The lovers can be both good, or both bad, or one of each. There's no doubt saying lovers can really complicate things (especially in a situation in where you don't even know who your lover is, lol...).
Ok, I've had enough of watching this strange game take all away from the good old trivia matches, so I've decided to join and see for myself what this WW thing is about.

It's been awhile since we've had any newbies, so it's nice to see some new faces. Anyways, don't worry if you go into this game confused and clueless to what's going on. That's how I started out with Mac's game. You'll pick it up and understand the game better as you play. I recall, I couldn't even figure out what the cobbler was until after my first game was complete.

Welcome, Rikae and Sally! :)
How long do games normally last on here though? It depends... One day or night phase lasts 24h so it varies quite a lot from just a few days from about two weeks or something like that. I think an average game takes a week or a bit more, but that's just a guess, not a fact.
Lommy, with this rate of sign up the game could start pretty soon. For all these unhelpful Americans could we maybe have a few days break if the game isn't finished by then?Yes, we might. Could all unhelpful Americans :p specify on which days they are unable to participate?
Currently, we have 14 players, including the unsure players. I'd like to have a few more, but with this rate of signing up that does not seem to be a problem. :D (Besides, I can always PM some people...)

Firstly Kath, thanks a lot for the PM, that cleared things for me.
But what if say a seer was a lover and the other lover was a wolf, would he try to expose the other wolves and say a normal villager is a wolf to save the lover, or wuld rather do what he's supposed to?
Plus, how can you make sure that nobody else except wolves uses PM?

But what if say a seer was a lover and the other lover was a wolf, would he try to expose the other wolves and say a normal villager is a wolf to save the lover, or wuld rather do what he's supposed to?
Well, that would be up to him to decide... although I'd wonder what the mod was thinking in the first place when s/he paired them up together... ;)
It all depends on what winning conditions the mod has given to the different roles (for example, are the lovers a separate team or are they on the village's or on the wolves' side or if there's some mixture of these).
The Might - the combination of lover wolf and lover Seer is, well it's unlikely, but if it happened we'd just play along none the wiser until, most likely, everyone else dies and they win! You don't always know all the rules and possibilities in this game, that's part of the fun!
As for PMing, well no you can't be sure that no one else is doing it, but there is a rule that no ordinary villager PMs another with anything game/role related while the game is running. Just as you'd follow the rule that says no one can post on the thread during the Night phase, so you follow that rule.
The Might
11-07-2007, 08:44 AM
Another thing, what about these phases?
Does the night start after the deadline and lasts 12 hours?
No, each Day and each Night last 24 hours.
So, say we started at 9pm on the 10th then that Day would end at 9pm on the 11th. Night would then begin when the Day ends, so at 9pm on the 11th and it would end at 9pm on the 12th.
Does that make sense?

I'd like to hear the viewpoints from other players on the issue of me playing this game.
I'm leaving to Cuba early on Saturday morning (GMT) 17.11. and will probably have the first possibility to be online on Sunday afternoon / evening American timezones (we're in Havana late Saturday evening and will leave to Santiago early in the Sunday morning local time...). Also I'm not sure how easy it is to get net access in Santiago de Cuba. I've been told there are net cafés but if they are not easy to find I may have no time to search for them extensively.
So after the few first Days (if I'm alive still, that is) my participation would be somewhat unpredictable - depending on the local circumstances I'd be playing something from a bit less than normal to one post aDay or in the worst instance not being able to post. If I'm in the game I would sure do my best to help whatever cause I'm picked to support.
What say you? Is it ok. for you that I play or should I step aside?
PS. If the starting Day gets postponed for a reason or another I might be unpredictably online in the first Days but with full steam after Nov. 25th.
I'm sure you would manage to participate in the game well enough, Nogrod. :) But of course, it's up to you!

1) All unknown persons in the texts are referred to as he. So don't make any conclusions of it. :)
2) Like I said, anything in the narrations doesn't point at any player's role. We wrote this discussion by first writing the comments and tones of voices and then just added (by rolling a dice) random names to the blank spaces. So don't write a serious case based on something someone said in a narration. ;)
3) I seem to be taking after my RL self and being always late... Sorry.

p.s. what are the odds I could be listed in the village numbers as sally? just because my full username is so long. i may change it, but i'm not really sure if i can yet or not. i'm going to go investigate that I thought I would use the long official names of everybody in the tallies and in the first narration in order to avoid confusion. But if you wish (or if you insist), I can add you as Sally in the next list of who are alive and who are dead. In any case I'm going to use the name Sally in the narrations to come - too much work typing satansaloser2005 all the time... ;)

Sorry for making you wait for so long. Next time I'll tell you the identity of the lynchee before writing the narration. Less painsome for you, less hasty for me. :)

Oh yeah I forgot I could post in this thread.
"Maybe sally... I don't know, maybe it's his style, the second paragraph of his post does not fit the whole frame of his post, or so it seems to me... ."
I'm a woman by the way, just for those of you who might wonder. :)

Well, I'm not sure if one can analyse stuff in the game during the Night?!Right so. Let's keep our mouths and return to the game when Day2 starts... those of us alive that is.
So no comments on this thread about the game. Only on the actual gamethread when it's Daytime.
This thread is for actual notifications about possible absences etc. that do not straightly deal with the arguments or whatever said in the game.

Mith,
I think it's all up to you. You know I'd really love to see you play, but you're the one who knows if you have the resources (time, motivation, energy etc) to do so. So you should make your own decision and I don't think anyone prefers you withdrawing if you are still able to play to an extent and if you yourself wish to do so.
I wish the best to your father and you.

Sad to hear that Mith.
Have courage!
If you feel that you can play Mith then please do, but if you feel it will cause you too much stress we won't make you feel guilty. You do what's best for you. :)

Thanks..I hope he will be ok .. but at his age stuff is bound to happen from time to time.. I am hoping it is a blip and given the level of absenteeism I shall try to participate as much as I can. However I am sorry for what I regard as an unacceptable level of involvement. :(

I finally got to read it. I'd say definitively: quality.
That was hilarious!
And I even got the German lyrics! :D

Good job with the post Lommy!
I guess a spoof of the Ärzte called "Balrogs sind Schweine" would be better :D

But surely a Balrog wouldn't think they have anything in common with swines. :p
I'm so sorry I didn't vote. Time just ran away from me this evening and it wasn't til I got back from gym all of 10 minutes ago that I remembered I needed to.

Oh i loved it. Just got a chance to read it, and I laughed half of my face off. Need to go glue that back on now.
Oh and I'll definitely be able to vote tomorrow. It'll be early most likely, but I'll show my little face sometime before day's end.

I'm sorry for committing suicide without so much as an early notice, but Lhuna the ordo was right: I'm tired, I'm tired, I'm tired. Or at least I really will be, to the point of actual suicide, if I didn't pull out.

So far so good... basically my dad is eighty-one so stuff is going to happen but he had a funny turn on Tuesday and seemed fine then when I got back on Wed he seemed aphasic then a few minutes later he was ok but I was freaked. It might be just effects of medication combined with anno domini - or it could be TIAs. He is on the apropriate drugs but the procedure to clear the blood vessels surgically is deemed more likely to cause a stroke than leaving them be... so it is a case of being grateful for every uneventful day..

Sorry to hear that Mith, hope you dad's situation will improve.
Posting here t say that it is possible that I won't be able to post the following Day, since I'll be away from my computer and I'm not sure if I will have Internet access. Will however do my best to manage to post at least once.

Here's my situation then.
I will leave very early tomorrow (RL), around 3-4AM GMT and need to vote before it.
I have been assured that the major hotels in Santiago de Cuba at least should have workable net-accesses with modest prices (no broadbands of course...).
But that means I might actually be able to come in and read the stuff + post myself once or twice a Day if alive.
I'll give you notice - if not otherwise then through Lommy - if things are not so easy as I now believe they are.

Because Day3 started late (it was Downs' fault, not mine :Merisu: ) it will also end later. So Day3 ends 7.10 pm GMT. Thus, Night4 will be 10 minutes shorter than the standard Nights and Day4 will begin 7.00 pm.
Also, I'd like to add that I've co-written all narrations this far with Aganzir. She has been helping me more or less with every single narration and I guess (I hope :D) this will continue in future as well.

Okay, I have to run off to a film shoot, so I really don't have any time to read or post right now. It's going to take most of the day, but there will be a lunch break, so I should be able to return briefly before deadline. If you don't hear from me until then, that's why.

Again, sorry for the delay, I had some difficulties along the way.
Because the Day started 20 minutes late, it will also end 20 minutes later, so 7.20 pm GMT.
I will take the extra 20 minutes from the next Night and hope that we'll finally be for a change on schedule after it... :)

Didn't catch that post; just saw it now. Explains a lot hehe. I feel pretty snazzy myself, calling out at least two of them, regardless of who the third is. Especially since this is my first game. But I admit my accidental erasing of my post....not good. So I kind of deserved it. Either way, I feel I did pretty well. :)

Since the 'downs were down for such a long time, I will give you some extra time. The day will end at 8.00pm GMT. That probably means that I might not be able to write a proper narration in time, so you'd better not finish the game toDay... ;)
