View Full Version : Geography Direction Quiz!

Gil-Galad

This is another idea i just came up with. basically the question-asker states a posistion on any Tolkien map and gives a direct (North, south-east etc.)

EI: Gondolin, South-West

and the next person gives a name of a place

Falas

the question-asker then goes off of that location, saying the direction is desired place is

North-East

it goes on from there till someone names the desired place, in this case it will be Nargothrond.

it doesn't have to be a city! it can be a mountain, river, anything located on a map!

Isengard, South-East

Wow, looks interesting.

I will start close. Though there is still something that can be between. Edoras?

The Might
12-23-2007, 05:28 AM
I have a question.
Do we have to wait for the question asker to cofirm the guess or give a new direction or can we post another location on that direction we think might be correct.

For example, am I allowed to say Minas Tirith now or do I have to wait for you to tell Legate if he's right?

Gil-Galad
12-23-2007, 04:24 PM
i think for now we should wait on the question asker, if it gets too easy then we could step it up to make it difficult

Edoras -> South-East

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-23-2007, 04:35 PM
Fords of Erui (in Lossarnach)

Still south-east? :)

The Might
12-23-2007, 06:39 PM
I find it somewhat unfair that you have in a way to be lucky to be the first to post after the asker posts in order to have a chance.
Now I can't post and after you'll answer Gil, who knows who will.
It's not like I am bothered by this but...it's just that without the possibility to post at all times the game seems to lack any dynamic...

Gil-Galad
12-23-2007, 10:18 PM
hmmm.... alright we'll go your way after someone gets it right.

Fords of Erui (in Lossarnach) -> North-West

by the way, the easiest way to do this is when your looking on a map, split it into qudarants with the axis on the current location. for example, isengard to carn dum isn't exactly north-west, but it is in that quadrant.

McCaber
12-23-2007, 10:29 PM
Minas Tirith?

Gil-Galad
12-24-2007, 07:55 PM
Aye it be Minas Tirith.

from now one we are going to do altered rules where it won't go one at a time.

McCaber
12-24-2007, 10:44 PM
Sweet. Ok, here I go.

From Minas Tirith, going north.

Gil-Galad
12-25-2007, 02:22 AM
Lothlorien

The Might
12-25-2007, 05:40 AM
What about the Mountains of Mirkwood.

McCaber
12-25-2007, 08:58 AM
Neither of those. Think a bit closer to home.

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-25-2007, 09:09 AM
I say Dead Marshes.

McCaber
12-25-2007, 09:34 AM
Dead Marshes it is! Nice job, Legate. Your go.

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-25-2007, 09:42 AM
Okay.

From Dead Marshes, let's go to the north-west (surprisingly :) ).

Marky Lazer
12-25-2007, 10:20 AM
Ettenmoors?

The Might
12-25-2007, 10:46 AM
The Wold

Gil-Galad
12-25-2007, 01:07 PM
Fangorn.

wow i like how this thread is turning out so far...

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-25-2007, 01:14 PM
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Wold: North-west. Fangorn: Still north-west. Ettenmoors: west.

McCaber
12-25-2007, 02:08 PM
Fornost?

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-25-2007, 02:12 PM
No. South.

The Might
12-25-2007, 06:18 PM
The Barrow-Downs?

Gil-Galad
12-25-2007, 08:21 PM
Amon Hen?... or is that Sul... always get those two mixed up

McCaber
12-25-2007, 09:12 PM
Bree?

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-26-2007, 01:58 AM
Barrow-downs: north-east
Amon Sul (if you mean it, you could have simply said Weathertop): west
Bree: north-east

The Might
12-26-2007, 07:57 AM
I'll go with Midgewater.

Groin Redbeard
12-26-2007, 09:49 AM
I'll go with Midgewater.

I think you got it, Might!:D

The Might
12-26-2007, 10:06 AM
Nah, it could also be something else just west of Midgewater (not gonna say what, cause that would be two answers) Debatably it could also be considered NE of Bree.

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-26-2007, 11:07 AM
Yes, you did wrong not to try anything else, Groin. It is not Midgewater. West.

Gil-Galad
12-26-2007, 01:38 PM
Buckland

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-26-2007, 02:27 PM
Buckland? No way. East.

Gil-Galad
12-26-2007, 06:38 PM
looking on my giant wall map and i see nothing between Bree and Midgewater save The Great East Road

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-26-2007, 06:44 PM
Then you are obviously looking wrong. Great East Road you say? North.

The Might
12-26-2007, 08:26 PM
Then maybe it is that, that I was talking about in my last post. Chetwood.

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-27-2007, 02:57 AM
Of course, Chetwood, what else. Your turn, Miggy :)

The Might
12-27-2007, 09:01 AM
Indeed, I thought that after my last post things were pretty clear about the other option. But I like Midgewater better, they have neeker-breekers. So, Iron Hills -> SW

Gil-Galad
12-27-2007, 12:42 PM
Dol Guldur

McCaber
12-27-2007, 03:26 PM
The Field of Celebrant?

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-27-2007, 05:25 PM

By the way, Miggy, I believe the game was supposed to work the way you continue from the last place. So you should have started at Chetwood.

Anyway, I wanted to say Amon Lanc :D , yet I see it was (technically ;) ) already taken. So I say Fangorn, just to make it interesting.

Gil-Galad

doesn't have too, kind of hard to go from minas tirith to Gondolin. its up to whomever turn it is, they can decide whether to continue on or start new. we may get bored of Middle Earth and go to Beleriand or the Undying Lands.

Groin Redbeard
12-28-2007, 05:54 PM
How about Lothlorien?

The Might
12-28-2007, 08:34 PM
Sorry, but no all wrong.
From all further SW. (guess this won't take too long)

Btw, sorry, must have missed that rule. It would btw, be south of Chetwood, but I think you figured that out anyway now.

McCaber
12-28-2007, 08:47 PM
Is it Helm's Deep?

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-29-2007, 04:39 AM
Or is it Tharbad?

The Might
12-30-2007, 02:42 AM
Tharbad - South
Helm's Deep - West

I think we are pretty much there. ;)

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-30-2007, 02:50 AM
You sure it is west and not north-west?

But if so, then I say Drúwaith Iaur.

Groin Redbeard
12-30-2007, 04:30 PM
I know this is a little out North-West of Helm's Deep, but is it The Gap of Rohan?

The Might
12-30-2007, 04:37 PM
Nope, Leg-it already got it.

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-30-2007, 05:51 PM
Okay. From Drúwaith Iaur, let's go North-Eastern.

McCaber
12-30-2007, 06:10 PM
The Gladden Fields?

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-30-2007, 06:27 PM
Oh no! How did you know so fast?

Indeed, your turn :D

McCaber
12-30-2007, 08:08 PM
Thank you, Legate. With pleasure, we go from the Gladden Fields => Northeast.

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-31-2007, 04:47 AM
What about the Mountains of Mirkwood?

The Might
12-31-2007, 08:18 AM
As I doubt it's the Iron Hills again, I'll go ahead and say Erebor.

McCaber
12-31-2007, 11:01 AM
Mountains of Mirkwood - North
Erebor - still North

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-31-2007, 11:17 AM
In that case it's most probably Withered Heath.

McCaber
12-31-2007, 11:40 AM
Most Correct, Legate.

Withered Heath it is. Your turn.

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-31-2007, 12:37 PM
Okay. For the New Year, let us move to Beleriand.

We arrive together with Fëanor and his sons. We pass through Lammoth and stop on the very southern end of Ered Lómin. And from here, from the camps and firelights in cold New Year's night we have to set on our path eastwards to reach the place we want to move to.

Have fun.

The Might
01-01-2008, 05:33 AM
With the sons of Feanor we would probably want to challenge Morgoth so what about the Fen of Serech.

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-01-2008, 01:27 PM
Nay. Still east.

The Might
01-01-2008, 01:33 PM
Lothlann

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-01-2008, 03:50 PM
A very good orientation point to pick. South from there.

McCaber
01-01-2008, 09:31 PM
Following Feanor and his sons, could it be the hill of Himring?

The Might
01-02-2008, 05:04 AM
Maybe Mount Rerir

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-02-2008, 05:33 AM
Of course, correct :) A bonus question (easy for a Tolkien-loremaster): who are we? (Or who is with us, taking where we started and where we ended?)

You can take the thread anyway :)

McCaber
01-02-2008, 05:53 AM
Which one of us is right?

(Puzzlement ensues)

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-02-2008, 06:10 AM
The Might is right. I forgot to quote his post.

The Might
01-02-2008, 06:58 AM
Well, I know Caranthir was there.

Anyway, from Mount Rerir I suggest we go SW.

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-02-2008, 07:31 AM
Yup, I meant Caranthir. :)

From one mountain to another mountain: what about Amon Ereb?

Gil-Galad
01-02-2008, 12:14 PM
Nan Elmoth perhaps?

McCaber
01-03-2008, 06:03 PM
My guess is the Falls of Sirion.

The Might
01-04-2008, 10:20 AM
From all SW

Gil-Galad
01-04-2008, 11:23 AM
go to the extreme...

Isle of Balar?

The Might
01-04-2008, 12:47 PM
And going to the extreme was a good choice.
You're next Gil.

Gil-Galad
01-05-2008, 09:07 PM
alright!

from Isle of Balar let us go... North-East

The Might
01-06-2008, 09:01 PM
Menegroth

Gil-Galad
01-06-2008, 09:16 PM
Menegroth > South-east

McCaber
01-06-2008, 09:17 PM
Amon Ereb

Gil-Galad
01-07-2008, 11:45 AM
North-East

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-07-2008, 11:48 AM
Sarn Athrad

Gil-Galad
01-09-2008, 11:45 AM
South-East

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-23-2008, 04:11 PM
Ossiriand as a whole?

Gil-Galad
01-30-2008, 12:42 PM
... well its Tol Galen, which is in Ossiriand... don't do that again, got to say an exact place, not a region... your turn legate.

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-30-2008, 03:36 PM
Well, the problem is one can say a region as much as anything else... especially with little regions it is a problem, or, what if you have a region where there's nothing? Although, I expected you, if it's a part of the region I said, to simply say "no, it's a part of it" and we'll continue running around the small places until it's found... :( That's why I intentionally wrote the words "as whole" as distinction so that you could say "no, not as whole, just a part". Shame, I suggest we do it like that in further cases.

Anyway, when it's already my turn... from Tol Galen, let's go to the north-west.

McCaber
01-30-2008, 04:38 PM
The Falls of Sirion?

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-30-2008, 04:51 PM
Still North-West.

The Might
03-27-2008, 01:39 PM
the Firth of Drengist

Legate of Amon Lanc
03-27-2008, 01:44 PM
Now I would like to know what I had in mind :)

*takes out the map of Beleriand*

Please wait, loading...

Ah! I have it. I know what I had in mind.

East.

The Might
03-27-2008, 02:19 PM
Cirith Ninniach

Legate of Amon Lanc
03-27-2008, 02:22 PM
How did you know? :)

Your turn.

The Might
03-28-2008, 09:53 AM
I read your thoughts...

Anyways, from Cirith Ninniach, let us go east, so far east that we again enter Middle-earth.

Legate of Amon Lanc
03-28-2008, 10:10 AM
Okay, so let's say, Minas Tirith, for start?

The Might
03-28-2008, 10:28 AM
That would be rather south east, don't you think?
Go north, pilgrim!

Legate of Amon Lanc
03-28-2008, 11:21 AM
At least I know it's not more East.

What about Amon Lanc? :D

The Might
03-28-2008, 09:09 PM
North

Legate of Amon Lanc
03-29-2008, 05:11 AM
What about Mountains of Mirkwood then?

Gil-Galad
03-29-2008, 12:43 PM
Mt. Gundabad?

The Might
03-29-2008, 06:56 PM
Mts of Mirkwood -> north
Mt Gundabad -> east

Legate of Amon Lanc
03-30-2008, 05:09 AM
The Grey Mountains?

The Might
03-31-2008, 08:00 AM
More clarity.

Legate of Amon Lanc
03-31-2008, 09:22 AM
Withered Heath, then?

The Might
03-31-2008, 11:43 AM
yes

Legate of Amon Lanc
03-31-2008, 11:45 AM
Ah, nice... all right... from here, we go to... hum, hmm... south :)

Gollum the Great
04-03-2008, 09:05 PM
Erebor

Legate of Amon Lanc
04-04-2008, 04:10 AM
Nope. Still south.

The Might
04-05-2008, 04:26 AM
Orodruin

Legate of Amon Lanc
04-05-2008, 05:18 AM
South-east.

Annunfuiniel
04-05-2008, 07:59 AM
Lake Núrnen?

Legate of Amon Lanc
04-05-2008, 10:03 AM
Precisely. Your turn, give us a direction.

Annunfuiniel
04-05-2008, 10:41 AM
Ok, now from this lovely waterfront take a turn towards north-west.

Gollum the Great
04-05-2008, 12:39 PM
Let's say Esgaroth.

Legate of Amon Lanc
04-05-2008, 12:54 PM
Let's say Esgaroth.

Are you sure this is north-west?

I would say Fangorn.

Annunfuiniel
04-05-2008, 01:14 PM
Gollum, you need to direct your steps way towards south-west. :)

Legate, you're heading in the right direction so keep on going north-west.

Legate of Amon Lanc
04-05-2008, 01:35 PM
What about Tharbad, then?

Annunfuiniel
04-05-2008, 01:45 PM
From Tharbad towards east.

Gil-Galad
04-05-2008, 02:15 PM
Caradhras.

Annunfuiniel
04-06-2008, 12:58 AM
Back towards west.

Gil-Galad
04-06-2008, 01:07 PM
Eregion Region?

Annunfuiniel
04-06-2008, 01:27 PM
And the road goes ever...westwards.

Groin Redbeard
08-13-2008, 01:06 PM
The place that I am thinking of is northwest of Amon Hen .

Legate of Amon Lanc
10-05-2008, 11:26 AM
What about the (in)famous Dimrill Dale?

Gil-Galad
10-29-2008, 11:02 AM
Carn Dum?

The Might
11-21-2008, 10:05 AM
Tharbad

The Might
12-31-2008, 07:12 AM
Groin?

Legate of Amon Lanc
01-05-2009, 04:17 PM
Groin?

I am pretty sure that one is not correct ;)

The Might
01-05-2009, 11:28 PM
:D That really got me laughing!

Though Groin may have gotten as far as Tharbad as he isn't responding... after all it's not that far away from the Downs.

Beregond
01-05-2009, 11:49 PM
Is it time to invoke the 10 day rule? ;)

According to the official Rules for the Quiz Room (set down by Mister Underhill himself), section 3 states:

Whereas, "no new question has been asked following confirmation of a correct answer" [within 10 days], or
Whereas, "no response has been given by the question setter to the last answer" [within 10 days]:

Anyone may ask a new question on the topic.

(It should be noted as well, that "In addition, a thread may be considered stagnant if there has been no new post for 10 days or more")
