Not sure if this will be acceptable, but after the success of Paper Telephone, I thought this was worth a shot...
This game is a little like Paper Telephone, but with an important difference; its largely picture based. The task is to create a comic strip. The problem is that each panel is made by different people who have no idea what else is in the comic.
Basically, this is how it will work;
We'll chose some budding artists (or force some not-so-budding terrible artists). I will PM a subject to them. It will be Middle Earth related, of course. Along the lines of 'A meeting of Orcs', 'Gandalf's hat troubles' or more likely, something funnier. Each player will then draw a panel for a comic strip. (I'll give dimensions at the end...) Once everyone has sent their pictures back to me, I'll do my best to arrange them into some sort of 'story'.
If you agree to this game, then you should keep your drawings to this size;
Example;
http://i38.tinypic.com/rhtpjm.jpg
200 X 200
So... Will any among you join this quest to spin a tale of such strangeness that all the Elves will collapse in disgust? I'd like to get about 6 players at least.

Yea.
I've been terribly lazy with drawing lately, and what would be a better way to get me to draw again than have an angry Hookbill pestering me if it takes me too long?

The benefits of this game are that everyone is drawing at once, rather than in a chain. So it should be done sooner than a MASSIVE Paper Telephone run.

I am no artist.
In the one art class I was forced to take when I was 12, my final project was a terrible drawing of a monster with a huge sword and a shoulder mounted grenade launcher. The art teacher didn't approve.
And for our final pottery project we were supposed to make an ornate pitcher with a lid. I made a four-legged monster-looking thing, hollowed out the inside, and then forced a small hole through from its mouth down through its neck to its body so that you could pour liquid out of its gaping maw.
Again, the art teacher didn't approve.
But this little game gives me hope, Hookbill. Surely here on the Downs my work will not be looked down on. I can redeem myself, and become a respected artist.
Or at least I can become a terrible artist that is laughed at rather than sent to the principal.

I'll start as soon as we have a good number of artists. I'll probably give a limit of... say... a week at the most? It's only a small picture, so it shouldn't take that long...

Hahaha.
Well this didn't make much sense, but it was amusing. The bright colours contrasted the happenings quite nicely (well, except for my pic, but I ended up being too lazy to colour it).
If we're doing another round, I'm in - unless Hookbill (or whoever's going to mod it) decides on a participant limit and there are other people who want to try it.
However, I'm not sure if some more consistency would be needed. I kind of liked it this way but it might be worth a try - say, if the mod gave the players a short list of characters to choose from, or just wrote a story to explain the pics once that the round is finished? Or would it become too much like Paper Telephone?
Dunno.

Dunno.I agree with a need for some consistency... but we should not destroy the very anarchistic idea this whole thing kind of rests on.
I think with a host more contributors and some deals made of the central characters this would be much more fun. With 10 to 15 pics the mod could really do her/his best and would have a lot of more choices to build a funny story. With only six pics one has very limited possibilities.
But it was fun to be in this and I do hope we'll get a new one with lots of contributors to make this a real event!

That's not a bad idea. I had thought of something along those lines, but wasn't sure whether or not to do it right away.
You're right that we need more players. So, call up your friends, and your enemies! Let's get some sort of MASSIVE comic of some sort of doom.
Thinlómien
09-16-2008, 12:25 PM
That was rather insane. :D I love all the pics.
I agree that there was maybe a slight problem with consistency/ making sense, but I think it was more because of the original sentence than because of the rules. Had the sentence sent to all of us included some character or object (eg. "Frodo caused a tragedy in Hobbiton"), it would have turned out rather different, I think. So, I don't think the rules necessarily need to be changed. (It's a question of preference, I think.)
Count me in for the next round.

++ a list of characters

We might also have some slight basic ideas about the central characters, like if there is Aragorn he should have "brown shirt and a green backpack" or whatever so that we might be able to see the drawer has intended the same character. It doesn't need to be minute as all creativity is okay but just some such features which would make it clear to everyone who the character is (like Faramir is having a red feather in his hat :))?

Nogrod
09-18-2008, 12:45 PM
Also the header could be a bit more detailed. "Tragedy in Hobbitton" is vague enough to make too different interpretations available with only half a dozen drawers in the game. I do not wish for any strict headers but a bit narrower one could be better - at least if we don't get a landslide for new people to join as well.
Like I said earlier it needs to be open enough to keep the possibilities of totally insane stories to be made up open still...
PS. Referring to my first post: I'd keep the last frame open for the mod to decide which it should be, but the maker of the first one could be decided beforehand...

I agree with Nog about the last frame as well as about the subject being a bit more detailed. However, I don't think the main features of the characters are that necessary to decide (unless it's something like "who chopped off Gollum's arm?").
Inviting people might be useful, either via PM or by posting an ad to the Paper Telephone thread. It might attract a few players.

I agree that it might be good to add a detail or two- eg "Trouble with Gandalf in Hobbiton". But I think placing too many demands and restrictions on the panels will lead to amalgamations that make a bit too much sense. I think part of the fun of this is the fact that things don't make sense.
So yes, give us a slightly more detailed topic, or maybe one recurring character or object, but not any more than that.

Hey, but sure it doesn't have to be a super-masterpiece? Okay, I seem not to understand a few things in here but even with the risk of looking like an idiot I'm going to ask this as drawing things with a mouse is just so annoying and any better idea into using the Paint would be welcome.
So what is this talk about left-handed mouses? A joke I don't get or something I know nothing about? I'm a left hander too but have no idea how "a left handed mouse" would change anything. I can move the mouse to left side of the keyboard to use my left hand in drawing and clicking the left-button is no harder than clicking the right one. As the question can't be of that, then what is it?

I always thought that part of the challenge was to have everyone drawing seemingly random panels and the mod has to try and attach some meaning to it. But the results, as we have seen, can be very baffling. Would you prefer a definite story? Or maybe have it split into teams; three to do the start of the story, three to do the middle and three to do the end? All collaborating with each other, but the teams being sort of independent thus retaining something of the challenge? Or maybe just teams writing any part they want and therefore the challenge is arranging each teams' work?
Thoughts?

As for me, I had one idea what could be done to make the game work better, when I was drawing my picture, and it seemed good to me. Unfortunately, I forgot it. :D
I think it was something like that everybody could draw two pictures to maintain some continuity (the pictures will be then distributed randomly, could be following each other, but normally they should not), or be given a random picture to see for inspiration or something. I don't know. If I remember the exact idea of what I had in mind, I will post it here.

Three comments:
1. That comic makes no sense whatever... but I guess that was the idea?
2. I have no idea what the point of the "left-handed mouse" thing is. It's just as easy to use a normal, non-switched mouse with your left hand (as I do, and I work in computer graphics).
3. Drawing with the mouse takes practice, though. If you're frustrated, and feel like spending money, try a graphics tablet. A lot of artists use them (but not me, so I can't recommend a brand).

I really like Gandalf's stockings, Oddwen. Then again, they're pink, so it must therefore be Saruman. Only someone that twisted could pull off that colour. :p
A Little Green's 'Boo!' man reminds me of the comic toothpaste for dinner (http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/).:D
I was really worried once I had it scanned and modified, since it looked pretty snarky on paper and then makes no sense at 200 pix. Then again, the mad party bit does make sense, and I like the mystery of it.
Here's the original, I really need to work on keeping things simple:

In the air of the current financial crises I might say, "yes there is still a bit too little regulation"... :)
2. I have no idea what the point of the "left-handed mouse" thing is. It's just as easy to use a normal, non-switched mouse with your left hand (as I do, and I work in computer graphics)
Thanks for making me feel sane again... I mean at some point I relly thought I was being a silly person with no idea of something really basic everyone knows...
A fun round anyway and some really nice pics!
But anyway we should think of this for the next one. Like the lawmakers in the U.S., how to regulate it enough for it to work but not to shun individual effort?

THE Ka

Would you prefer a definite story? Or maybe have it split into teams; three to do the start of the story, three to do the middle and three to do the end? All collaborating with each other, but the teams being sort of independent thus retaining something of the challenge? Or maybe just teams writing any part they want and therefore the challenge is arranging each teams' work?
That would probably give the comic enough glue to string together some plot, but not too much at the loss of perfect insanity.
Maybe something like a 'choose your own adventure' book, where some of the plot remains, but the result for the different parts is wholly up to the team's devices and imagination.
My favourite part was the one that said THE End, though!
Ach! Don't mention that name! THE Great Crasher of Epic Narrative, THE Far Too Conclusive One, and Destorer of Tolerably Well Crafted Plot Lines...

This was very amusing :D but I agree that the format is still a tad too unclear or that it doesn't work out perfectly yet. Hmmm... would this game totally lose its point if it became more papertelephoneish so that we actually established a list of the order in which we draw, and then everybody could see the panel the previous person had drawn (but not the ones before it)? (And did I explain clearly enough?)
Hookbill the Goomba
10-06-2008, 06:15 AM
Here's an idea to make things a little less Paper Telephone...y?... and still retain some sort of story, as it were.
We get two people to draw panels. A third person draws something to try and link to the two together. Then we take the last panel and get someone else to draw another, then someone else links them. Something like that? So it's a bit like a chain, only... not?
Does this make sense? :(

Did we find a continuity fix yet? Two suggestions I have would be to either have the mod come up with a story and give each drawer an assignment, or to be too paperteleporno and have each drawer describe their panel for the next person. The first might be a bit too tyrannical, and the second too multiple-topics-on-the-same-subjectish.

Here's how it'll all go down. I will PM you all the same sentence, you will draw a 200x200 panel. Dialogue and the occasional "Meanwhile, back at the ranch..." inserts are fine. You will email it back to me at the address I will send you. I will arrange said panels in a semi-coherent manner, and then post them here.
If the end result just doesn't amalgamate, I may add a few panels myself.
Any objections? If not, I will send out the PMs tomorrow.
The next Mod may want to replace "a sentence" with "a poem"...that could be interesting.
edit: Oh!
We get two people to draw panels. A third person draws something to try and link to the two together. Then we take the last panel and get someone else to draw another, then someone else links them. Something like that? So it's a bit like a chain, only... not?

Oh, good. I didn't really want to send out seven different sentences. It would take a lot of time and effort. Not to sound lazy, but it's not in my agenda to make multiple sentences and phrases to send out to people so that I can get seven pictures in return and put them all together and try to make some sense of it all. It would take a lot of time, which is a commodity that I could have more of. Maybe next time we'll go with the more complicated version, when I'm more experienced, that is.;)

Could we try it the way that everybody would be given a different sentence that form a story together so that we get like a comic strip with each box drawn by a different artist? I think it sort of makes sense more than the current system, and if I recall correctly, we even did something like that before. I'm not sure if he's up to it at the moment because he is also modding Paper Telephone, but that's just speculation. I was posting because I wanted to remind people of this thread. The Comic Amalgamation Station is a fun game, I don't want it to go into the depths of oblivion. :(

Erm. Well, it's not a competition. If you would look through the thread, you'd see how the game was played. :) It's easier than trying to explain it. There's a sentence and people draw pictures for the mod to put together in a comic strip kind of way. It is an amalgamation of comics. . . I'm sure that explained a lot.
So it's not competitive, but a lot of fun. It's really amusing at the end. The results never fail to create a laugh!

Yeah, sorry. I'd completely forgotten about this game. I don't have a lot of time to get down to it, so I'm going to open it out to anyone who wants to mod. I could do a picture for the game, but I'm not up to modding. :(

Funny but it made no sense. As you went on did you somehow give meaning to it all??
So it goes something like this:
everyone draws a picutre
we send the pictures to the mod
the mod then puts the pictures in some order and posts them
we do this on Paint? Or some other Mac program since Paint isn't on Mac
Can I sign up??

One thing I forgot to mention is the mod sends you a sentence or phrase that you must draw a picture of. If you look back to the first post all of the particulars are there.

Ah, I see. Well, whatever floats your boat. :) I'm sure the outcome will be entertaining.
EDIT: My plan for the next couple of days is to make sure that everybody who signed up will play. I know that Blind Guardian and Hookbill will send in pictures, I've already got conformation. So I just need to make sure that everybody else will play. It was such a long time ago that we all signed up.

You know what's hilarious? Even after two years of intense pleading and bringing-back-to-life threats over the teapot avvie I didn't even notice that you had changed it back until Lottie pointed it out. But I like it. Makes you look like you might have something important to say! :D

Okay! I think that I'll write up the sentences and send them out tomorrow. Do we want to have multiple sentences, one to each player to make it more complicated?
Also, should we Hookbill's idea and go for a 500x500 picture?

I meant shrinking it. Hey, since I'm using a Mac...*opens program* It doesn't send...Well...now what? damn. There's no paint program that sends...? And I can't take a picture of it cause this computer has no USB port. Power Point will have to suffice. At least it has shapes. I wonder if you'll be able to open the PP thing. No, wait i'll be posting it. Okay, might come out weird, but whatever!

For this game you don't post your picture, you PM it. I'm not a Mac user so I wouldn't know if it has Paint or a similar program or not. But you can draw it and scan it in if you have a scanner. You'll email it to me. When I send out the sentence I'll give you instructions on how it's done.

Each player had a different sentence this time, which made it, well, weird. And, some of the pictures were a bit problematic, but oh well.
From left to right: Oddwen, Loslote, Legate of Amon Lanc, Eönwë, Blind Guardian, Hookbill the Goomba, Laurinquë, and The Flower of Iris.
Now for sentences:
Oddwen: Trouble at Minas Tirith.
Loslote: The battle at Pelennor goes wrong.
Legate of Amon Lanc: Corsairs cometh to Gondor.
Eönwë: Aragorn's first days as king.
Blind Guardian: Shelob has problems with Gondorians.
Hookbill the Goomba: Tea shipments ceased coming to Mordor.
Laurinquë: Barad-Dur crumbles.
The Flower of Iris: Witch King returns.

Eönwë - Yours is falling off the chair, out the door, and into the well hilarious. I like the stick figure.
This generally makes no sense in the slightest, but hey! It was fun! Do you think there could be some way of enlarging the image TGEW? That way everyone can see the witty things I wrote on the Barad-Dűr Crumble box. :p
