Updated rules:

Here are the rules as of now:

From 20 to 7 - each player has 3 votes: 2 hurts and 1 heal. Double hurts are allowed.

From 6 to 4 - each player has 3 votes: 2 hurts and 1 heal. Double hurts ar not allowed: a player has to hurt 2 different characters and heal one, or he may use only 1 hurt and 1 heal.

When but 3 characters are left each player has either a hurt or a heal.

Wait for at least four posters to vote prior to you voting again.

These rules can change whenever deemed appropriate.









With the first hurt and heal winding down quite quickly I think it time to start a new thread.

The rules:

1. There shall be 3 votes per person.

2. You are not able to do more than 2 heals or 2 hurts per turn.

3. You must wait for 4 people to post their vote prior to you voting again.

4. We will not start with any characters but shall decide who is on by committee. In other words you nominate who you would like to see on there and they need to be seconded by somebody and then they are on the list.

5. We would be wise to not use characters found on the last hurt heal although it's not forbidden.

6. Maximum number of 20 characters.

7. Starting points per character are 10

Let's discuss how we feel about these rules. Agreeable. I think the voting rules of 3 with the option to double heal may be reviewed in the future when crunch time hits but this might work too.

I think the double heal is a bit of a haunter, as it can turn to this "everybody has 1000 lives and only little by little they get hurt". However, the double hurt is quite dramatic, as seen from the first game's end. It will be also best to somehow reduce this horrible floodposting, although perhaps the four people in between will do. But I am still not settled. Not fully, at least.

The basic problem (it concerns both the double-hurt as well as the number of people needed between posts) is, I think, the number of people playing. That's the crucial moment. When you have barely two people playing (like it was in the beginning of the first thread) and twenty characters on top of that, double-hurt is almost necessary and it almost doesn't matter how often you post. When you have some five last characters and eight or so people around, the control is needed and I would even say that this double-hurt rule was not almost (note that I am saying "almost") needed.

Interesting. "Nothing" happened in the first two or three weeks but then when I'm away for two days (only three eliminated when I last posted) the whole game has ended...

Something was not in balance there. Legate speaks sense here: the number of people playing is important when the rules are wrought. But how to account for it if one doesn't know how many people will take part and when?

There has to be installed into the system a way to ensure that characters will eventually get voted off.

The end of the last game was stressful and rushed. Refresh page - count - post - count - correct - refresh page - correct again... Grrr... There was absolutely no place for associated banter, which is usually so fun.

Also, yes, I think it is much more interesting if we keep either to Silm or to LOTR. Gothmog I and Fingolfin seemed to me out of place in the last game regardless of the fact that both were great characters. It would have been much better, IMHO, to have Durin's Bane and a contemporary Elf (Gildor, Glorfindel or Galadriel) in the game - with the understanding that we consider mostly their deeds in the TA, not what we know of their FA history from Silm.
But in the FA game Sauron should be regarded as Gorthaur Melkor's Lieutenant, not as the Ringmaker and Mordor Lord.

I also much approve of the idea of thematic lists (all orcs, or all Valar, or all Maiar, or the Fellowship, or Elf-Lords of the FA). Maybe we can also have a game based on the LOTR Appendices, with Romendacil, Castamir, Earnur, Arvedui etc?;)

I like Gordis' suggestions, and think if we're going to focus on either the Silm or LoTR, I prefer the former. LoTR is done to death, the province of movie fans... much as I love it.

If I can, I would like to nominate Melian, Maedhros and Maglor. :)

I can agree with these rules. Also I like the theme of the Silm, but do we want to make the whole Silm or narrow it even further to certain types of characters such as dwarves or elves etc...I would vote let's keep it broad and just get 20 well characters making sure to represent the lot of them.

I would vote to have a rather broad Silm game now, then again LOTR game, then maybe UT - Akallabeth Numenorean game, then maybe LOTR appendices game (the last two I would fancy very much) and so on.

"More specialized" games could come later, I believe.

What do you all people have against Thingol? He was quite good character, actually, he was pretty complex. But hurting Ulmo is even worse. That's a blasphemy! I guess he should not have been put into the contest in the first place, because he just doesn't belong here. He's by far the best.

But all right, for now. Heal Ulmo, double hurt Míriel (I don't get what's the point with her, I barely know she even existed - okay, which, of course, may be an argument as well - in some way, poor her; however, I think some far more interesting characters have too few points and she has undeservedly too much).

I must say, right now, I would have preferred rather "heal five people and hurt no one" (there are so many characters already hurt whom I would like to heal), but of course that won't just work if everybody did that. So I just have to take it the way that I am going to hurt everybody but the people I like, and this way make them have more points than others.

Now that was not nice at all. But I said that above - aside from deserving to be pitied, as a character, she is not the one whom I would nominate for a winner.

All right, but what now? Yes - hurt Túrin and Thuringwethil (the guy with pitiful fate and the overrated bat who may be an interesting character to work upon if you were ever to write a fanfiction, but who is really not that impressive by itself) and heal Thingol.

Hmm.. Silm game doesn't seem as exciting as the LOTR one. I like Silm and have read it several times, but I don't have strong likes and dislikes for Silm characters as I do for LOTR ones… I haven't realized it before, but I don't really care for any of them. Am I the only one?

Hmm.. Silm game doesn't seem as exciting as the LOTR one. I like Silm and have read it several times, but I don't have strong likes and dislikes for Silm characters as I do for LOTR ones… I haven't realized it before, but I don't really care for any of them. Am I the only one?
I said something a bit similar in the beginning, although I cannot relate wholeheartedly to what you say. It's more like that I just don't have that strong likes nor dislikes for Sil characters, indeed, it's not that I don't care at all, and also there are people I am really fond of, but it simply is not as strong as with the LotR (and Hobbit) characters. I think it's just natural in the way that the Sil is not that much about characters, it's primarily a mythology, only with some specific cases (like Beren and Lúthien's tale, and several recurring characters like Thingol or some sons of Fëanor) and tales from the UT and of course the most after the edition of CoH it's better. The CoH actually was a major blow, at last it helped me to feel many of the characters as really far closer to me, otherwise, they were a bit... distant. To sum it up, the Sil's main strength lies not with the characters, but in something else, while LotR relies strongly on the characters.

Anyway, /end thoughtful rant :)

Yes, that's exactly true. Although, for example myself, I am doing that the way that I hurt everybody else and keep unharmed those whom I like. So, I will eventually turn to hurt even people I am indifferent about, just because I don't think they deserve to have so many points (which is the case with most of the people in my case anyway, like I said - I am mostly rather indifferent about most people).

He didn't start the war. Melkor did. Melkor made it his number one goal to corrupt Feanor. Once he decided to do that, it was a given that Feanor was going to be tainted. The only people who had the power to undo the damage were the Valar. But instead of undoing Melkor's lies (like Melian did with Hurin) they punished Feanor via banishment which only strengthened Melkor's stain.

It was a reasonable offer considering the Noldor had built their city for them. But no. Because the Valar didn't want the Noldor to leave, their puppet Olwe refused to help.

So Feanor began manning the ships. And then the Alqualonde elves starting throwing them overboard. And remember, the Noldor were weighted down with weapons and and armor and such, so the Alqualonde elves were essentially drowning them. They started the killing.

But anyway, this exercise in logical thinking usually proves too much for my fellow Downers. It's much easier mentally to blame Feanor rather than trace things back to the Valar.

He didn't have a choice. If Melkor decides he is going to corrupt someone, if he's allowed to work his evil magic (the way the Valar allowed him to), then it's pretty much a given that he's going to succeed. Even Hurin the Steadfast couldn't help but be tainted by Melkor.

Once Melkor decided that ruining Feanor was his top priority, it was going to happen. Melkor is that powerful.

If his target of choice would've been Finrod during those years in Valinor, then Finrod would've done something nutty (unless the Valar had stepped in to counter Melkor).

Oh, how corrupted by Morgoth's lies you have become! You start with speaking about him, yet end up with Valar, who were as much victims as your Fëanor was.

However anyway, Fëanor was selfish and greedy person, who did not care about the lives of his kin, and even of those close to him who followed (I heard about some ship burning). Mainly, however, you say the Valar were the only ones to remove the damage. Not really. They asked Fëanor to give him the Silmarils, yet here his greed prevailed (it's of no matter that he factically didn't have them anymore at that point) and he refused to give it to them. And they did not force him, by any means, even though I can imagine people who would argue they had the right to, as there was the fate of Arda at stake (I think it was right the way they did it, but anyway).

Perhaps the Noldor had moral right for some of the Teleri's help, and they were their kin after all, however anyway, Noldor had no right to go and take their ships if Teleri did not give them to them. They Noldor acted no differently from Morgoth, the basis of the deed is the same: stealing something that does not belong to them, and eventually killing others in the process.

Yes, I understand that - but I simply don't. There's about one line about him. Glorfindel, on the other hand, was far cooler when it comes to the matter. Besides, I don't like his name that much. It really fits much more to a Gondorian steward than to an Elf, in my opinion.

Yes, I see. But actually, funnily enough I like all the others you named except for Ecthelion. :) Perhaps he's too noble for me, in some way - you know, like a noble prince who appears, kills a Balrog and disappears again. Glorfindel is more of a knight, he has some more background; Mablung is a hunter, Beleg too, Daeron is a singer, Voronwë is a mariner. So the representative of the feudal class, so to say, is not seeming special in any way.

Was he responsible for his actions? If you believe he was truly cursed then no he was not. What were his intentions? I think you need to look at this heart. I think he is the most misunderstood of all Tolkien's characters. Everybody loves Boromir but when an actual great comes along we don't like him.

I think he is the most misunderstood of all Tolkien's characters. Everybody loves Boromir but when an actual great comes along we don't like him.Boromir's character was consistently likable until he tried to take the Ring from Frodo, and even then he redeemed himself by protecting Merry and Pippin. Turin, however, was consistently stupid. I don't like to look at people's hearts, that's up to God. It's not what a person is inside that defines him, it's what he does. It doesn't matter though, Turin's dead!;)
