The three of us Finns + the Swede are online as well as TGEW, Pitchwife, Eönwë and Loslote. Hookbill & Lauri should join us shortly. Haven't started yet so if somebody is still interested, post here or add me to your contacts on Skype.

Today's call went well. :) We read a good bit of The Ring Goes South and didn't spend most of our time talking about Doctor Who, which is an improvement from last time. :p We also talked a fair deal about Phantom and Alien. I think that it was generally agreed upon that we liked Volo's Gimli. He sounded quite rough. Also, LEGOS!

Nobody recorded it this time. We'll try harder next.

EDIT: That PT that we did, were we going to post it on the 'Downs, you people who were involved?

Actually, the reading aloud of the Book was one of the best readings I've done so far. The roles were as follows: Agan - Frodo; Greenie - Legolas; Volo - Gimli; Skip - Aragorn; Hookbill - Boromir; Pitchie - Gandalf; Lauri - Merry; TGEW - Pippin; Steve - Sam; and me - narrator. Everyone was amazing! :D We (well, some of us) wanted to do a quick game of live-action WW, but couldn't figure out the logistics, and we ended up doing a quick game of Paper Telephone, which was rather epic. We were joined at the beginning by TGWBS, and it was pretty awesome to meet such a legendary Downer! [/shameless fawning] :p

Eönwë

"So where is that Paper Telephone?" I hear you cry.

Well, look no further:

I started us off with this sentence:

Trouble at the house of Tom Bombadil

Which Lottie thought would be best represented by:
http://i36.tinypic.com/2ponqyf.gif

Lauri, on the other hand, thought that:
The floating rock of insanity scares stick-man.

Which Pitch interpreted as:
http://i36.tinypic.com/2wnxlc0.png

This was all too much for TGEW, who thought that:
The strange flying head chases the man whose head is disappearing.

Which Hookbill thought meant:
http://i34.tinypic.com/dnixow.png

To be continued...

Eönwë
08-09-2010, 04:34 AM
While Lottie thought that this would be more appropriate:
A ghostly head chases its body around a park.

Lauri thought that this was closer to the truth:
http://i36.tinypic.com/t987s0.jpg

While Pitch, on the other hand, thought that this was going on:
Lisbeth Salander lost her head trying to run away from a rabid Huorn

Which TGEW could only explain through this picture:
http://i34.tinypic.com/24v1buc.jpg

Our Paper Telephone of super-speed drew to a close when it was left to Hookbill sum up the insanity with this fateful sentence:
Exploded tree syndrome appeared to be contagious, much to the annoyance of red haired stickman.

(Note: Photobucket wasn't working, so I had to upload the pictures through tinypic. I'll re-upload them through photobucket later.)

Anyway, as usual, great discussion and reading from everyone involved!

Hahaha you people are crazy. I'm sorry we missed the Paper Telephone but it was quite late and Volo had to catch his last bus home.

I think I've only taken part twice before, but this was one of the best readings - not only because it was one of the longest. I love the combination of Greenie & Volo as Legolas and Gimli (they've done it before back when Brinn was in Finland) - Volo's exaggerated Russian accent and Greenie's smug elvishness. And I'm sorry the hobbits got so few lines because Lauri & TGEW made a great Merry and Pippin.

Interestingly enough, skip heard Hookbill's voice for the first time when only we, he and TGEW were present, and he asked how come TGEW sounds more British than Hook. :p

Looking forward to the next reading.

I think, if nothing else, we should prepare beforehand for the 22nd September. I mean, if there has ever been a date worth making a reading, it would be this, just like the celebration of the end of the War was, where it all started - is it possible that we have first read such a long time ago? So if nothing else, I say that I would like to participate in something on that day. The only downside for some might be that it is Wednesday, but well... what do ye people say?

I had a thought about perhaps doing something on one of the Oxonmoot days, if I can drag anyone around a computer on, say, the Friday night?

Ooh, our own Telerin Circle, Hookbill?! That would be fun!

TheGreatElvenWarrior
09-09-2010, 01:27 PM
Oxonmoot doesn't have any days actually on the 22nd, does it? Then we could do both ideas at the same time. Alternatively, if we want to have a call on the 22nd and with all of the Oxonmooters we could always do two calls...

Loslote
09-09-2010, 07:24 PM
Sadly, I'd be very much not available on a Wednesday. :( Probably not Friday, either...if we do something on a weekend, I'll hopefully be able to make it, though.

Would anyone be available this weekend? Somewhere in there, the weekends got switched to my full-time-job-time.

I'm ready for the usual madness and anarchy, so long that is isn't during between 9.00-15.00 (GMT -7) during the work week. I would prefer a weekend really, but I could probably do anything in the evening on the other days of the week.

Pitchwife
09-11-2010, 03:41 AM
If there are still enough people interested in doing something tonight, I'd be available around the usual time.

On the other hand (or independently), I have to agree with Legate that the 22nd is an absolute must-date - although it'd be highly awkward for me in the middle of the work week. But if that's not feasible, what about the weekend after the 22nd?

Loslote
09-11-2010, 02:22 PM
I'm around now, and probably will be for a while.

The weekend after the 22nd is off-limits for me :( But 22nd itself would be great, I mean really, just for a little while, shouldn't be a problem... Or are there other ideas?

TheGreatElvenWarrior
09-16-2010, 10:18 PM
I'm fine with the 22nd. The only problem for those who actually have obligations is that it is in the middle of the week.

This time we need to actually record the call. Whoever has the technical know how/programme to do it should look into it, please. :)

Pitchwife

So it's two days to the Bagginses' Birthday, and it would really be a disgrace to let a date like this pass Skypeless. I definitely won't be able to stick around for the usual nocturnal madness this time, but I should be able to participate in the reading itself, if we don't start too late (and if we can find me a role that allows for occasional coughing, as I've got a cold at the moment that doesn't behave like it's going to leave me anytime soon).

As for choice of text, I think A Long-expected Party would obviously be ideal for this day, if we can get enough people together (I'm not sure how much roles there are in it, but my gut says lots). Or alternatively, with a smaller cast, Three is Company (we haven't done that yet, have we?)? What do you all think?

Legate of Amon Lanc
09-20-2010, 03:07 PM
Sounds great. I think definitely something should be done, and I mean, an hour can be spent for that in any case, and it should be worth it. I don't know when the US Downers can participate, what time is good for that; but myself, I don't want to stay up TOO late. About the time when I am posting this, for example, would be still fine: I think it's about 9 PM GMT. An hour here or there is okay...

So, who would be interested?

And as for the text, I am not sure if the Long Expected Party is "readable", but perhaps there are some good parts with more characters. Three Is A Company sounds also good, if we couldn't find anything - good idea, Pitch!

Gwathagor
09-20-2010, 03:27 PM

I will take LotR with me tomorrow and try to find some good passage for reading. I think if we can start around the time I said, 9PM GMT is ideal for me. Basically I will likely come and put my Skype on, I think I have at least some of your addresses there...

I've now laid my hands on a mic.
It would be fun to do the whole book, but time constraints might indeed be an issue.

Sounds cool! I don't have enough time to be actively arranging this, but if you decide to do this, I'd like to be in if it fits my timetables

Pitchwife
09-25-2010, 11:50 AM
Thanks to our latest spambot for reminding me to report on Wednesday's reading!

Despite some severe time constraints, we managed to honour Baggins Day by reading the final couple of pages from The Council of Elrond. The cast, in order of appearance:

Lommy as the narrator and Frodo;
Gwathagor in a schizophrenic debate with himself as Boromir and Aragorn (which of them played the banjo?);
TGEW as The Great Elven Loremaster, Elrond, and his counsellor, Erestor*;
yours truly as Gandalf (his lungs and throat obviously suffering from centuries of smoking the weed of the Halflings);
Legate as Glóin (continuing the tradition of Slavic accented Dwarves**) and Sam;
Hookbill as Glorfindel*** and Bilbo (also provider of musical interludes).

Everybody was fabulous, as usual. Due to the above-mentioned time constraints, our habitual explorations of the borderland between profound discussion and collective insanity were somewhat curtailed this time, but I'm confident that we'll more than compensate for that in the future..:D.

*I don't know if anybody's mentioned it yet, but TGEW has a real badass voice! Her Elrond sounded like, "Use the Ring against Sauron? Nah, young Boromir, we'll have none of that nonsense here!" (By the way, I feel I should probably apologize for repeatedly mistaking her family members for pets (and vice versa?) - somehow I never remember who is which!:o)
**They beat the Scottish ones anytime (pace John Rhys-Davies)!
***Forget the Gondolin backstory - Yorkshire is where he's from!

Thinlómien
09-26-2010, 02:56 AM
Yep, it was fun. I should take part more often. :)

And I have to agree about TGEW's badass-Elrond, he was just gorgeous! :D

I'm glad that my voice is Elrond-esque. :D I didn't have the time to read over his, er, lines, so I messed up a bit. But I'm glad that I was able to pull it off!

Oh, and I do have a pet. His name is Seth, and apparently he spouts out words of wisdom during those calls. He's been part of the last three. I am really sorry that I never can get him to be quiet. :o

Well then Eönwë, how are things looking for you? I'm thinking we could do the call on the 30th of October, or this Saturday. If not, we could always put it off for another week to see if we can gather more people. Would 18.00 GMT (also known as James/Eönwë Standard Time) be good? That's 10.00 Laurinquë time, 9.00 Alaska time, and 20.00 Helsinki time.

Would this weekend work for most people? Or should we put it off to next weekend in hopes of getting the Great Thinlómien and her voice of awesome to join? :D

Loslote

This weekend works fairly well, as does the next one. After that any attempts at orginization or prediction go poof. :p I might be decorating at church for a few hours, but I'm not sure what time that is, and I skate in the afternoons on Saturdays. Next weekend, as far as I know, is basically clear (other than the skating thing)...

I'd much prefer the weekend after this one, since I'm playing in Boro's current WW game, and our firewood for the winter is due to be delivered this Saturday, and I've just ordered the penultimate volume in the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant from Amazon (due to arrive on Thursday), which will be heavy competition for both WW and RL activities without adding Skype to the mixture. Weekend after that should be fine for me, if that works for the rest of you.
I have a working Skype of my own these days too (though I probably won't know how to use it, with my computer skills )
Don't worry, it's really rather simple, unless you try to use some Evil Recording Software of Doom which wreaks havoc on it and you have to fix it with a Sonic Screwdriver;). As long as one of us has you on their contact list, we can just add you to the call, and if you have any problems we can try to walk you through somehow via the text box.

The consensus (thus far) seems to be for weekend after next, or Saturday the 6th of November. That's quite a long ways from our last call, but I suppose this is what I get from waiting around for someone else to do the organising.

Right then, Saturday 6th November at 18.00 GMT. Be there or. . . um. . . I shall be rather cross. I can't remember if we've read it before, but is anyone besides me going through another Ent-mania phase? If so, we could consider reading Treebread.

Shouldn't be a problem though. Ent-mania - well now you mention it, I have been kind of doing Ent-related stuff lately (accompanying a friend in a song she composed for the Ent-Entwife-song), so yes, I kind of have something of an Ent-mania and wouldn't mind Treebeard in the least! I'm also fine with other chapters, really.

Don't worry, that's more or less what everybody involved in this does all the time, so kudos for taking the initiative!:)

The Treebeard chapter would be a nice choice for a rather smallish cast - just a narrator, Merry, Pippin, Treebeard, and Quickbeam if we include the Entmoot; and I already hear us all joining the chorus for the Ents' war chant!
Greenie, what instrument did you accompany that song on? You may have noticed that music is always welcome at these sessions, and music that's actually related to the text would be beyond awesome!

You might be disappointed to hear though that what I played there was basically just the chords, albeit in a complicated fashion. Not sure if I could make it work so that you could actually hear more of the song than just the chords as they are a bit boring by themselves. :D I can try to work it out if you want, not sure if it's possible though.

Yeah, it's been an awfully long time since the last reading (due to Christmas intervening, I suppose), the tradition is in some need of reviving. This weekend won't work for me either, but the one after that should be fine, and finally reading the Ent chapter would be awesome!

Just realized that next weekend has already become this weekend. So how about tomorrow? Would that work?
Roles for the Treebeard chapter (including Entmoot):
-Narrator
-Merry
-Pippin
-Treebeard
-Quickbeam
So we could do this with five people. If there's more, they could take turns as the narrator, and all join the chorus once we're marching on Isengard. What do you say?

Firstly, I want to be Pippin, even though we'll probably decide our roles during the call, like we usually do.

I talked about this with Pitch on Friday, and I realised it's about time to get things organized in here, especially since I never made it to one of the readings!

Pitchwife
03-27-2011, 03:25 PM
I guess I would be available, but I'd prefer closer to 8pm, as I'll probably working an early shift on Monday. Reckon with an hour to gather all the participants online, and another to pick a text and distribute the parts (we've tried to organize all that beforehand a few times, but so far that's never worked).

And can we please agree to postpone the Gandalf-uncloaks-jokes, gratuitous Doctor Who references and other general mayhem until after the reading proper this time? It's not like they're not fun, but taking hours and having people drop out again before we've even started reading like last time sort of defeats the original purpose.

Well, in any case, if not earlier, then I think we could try thinking about something for the 22th September, which is Thursday, if I am not mistaken - we can try to find out if that date would work for enough people or if, in case it didn't, we should move it, say, to the weekend after that, but still keeping it in the spirit of "it's Bilbo's and Frodo's birthday".

I guess the point is to organise the time so that as much people as possible can participate. Nothing also prevents us from making more than one reading in case the timetables prove to be difficult to combine. Let's stay flexible. (As for myself, I will most likely have the time anytime during that period. So I can just keep reading 24/7...)

So, will there be something happening tomorrow or not? And if not, on the weekend? I should be available either way.

If we'd like to revive the original idea of paralleling (parallelling?) the chronology of LotR, we could read something from A Long Expected Party (maybe the Ivy Bush scene?) and/or from early in Frodo's journey (did we ever do Three is Company/Short Cut to Mushrooms? My memory fails me, and I can't be bothered to wade through 10 pages of thread right now).

Or there's Bilbo and the Dwarves arriving in Lake-town from TH. That was on Bilbo's birthday too, wasn't it?

I would definitely like to participate, and I don't have anything against the suggested parts. I think the Ivy Bush has like 2+2 minor people plus the narrator or something like that.

The idea about Lake-Town, however, is maybe even better. It indeed was Bilbo's birthday, and the text is suitable especially for large groups of people, since there are quite many characters. So I think that could be used in case there are more people. If not, Ivy Bush or something serves it well.

The Lake-Town scene itself, just for the sake of information: if we start with "As soon as the raft of barrels came in sight..." and finish with, say, the end of the song about the King (or one more paraghraph, unless we want to kill the narrator); we have quite a good job for the narrator in the beginning and in the end, and I think quite equally distributed couple of lines for: Bilbo, Thorin, Fili, captain of the Lake-town guard (ev. there is another role for a random guardsman which otherwise would be played by the captain), Elf (/Elves), Master of the Town, singing people in the city (or that could be done by everyone in the end as a chorus, yay?).

It's maybe not that long, but still quite nice. I will try to take look at something else during the day, too. And I should be available basically anytime, though if we want to get people from both sides of the ocean to participate, perhaps evening Europe-time would be better? I don't know.

Legate, Gwath and me are having a session right now, if anyone wants to join...

Legate of Amon Lanc
09-23-2011, 08:46 AM
And so it came to be that we've had a really nice reading session yesterday with myself, Pitch and at various intervals Oddwen, Gwathagor and Eönwë. I must say this was probably the best way to celebrate Bilbo's and Frodo's birthday, as we actually managed to read incredible amounts of stuff.

First, me, Pitch and Oddwen had read the Ivy Bush conversation (which takes place before the celebration, and thus is related), as we wanted to read something quick (before Oddwen had to leave) and related to the topic of the celebration. The cast was: Old Noakes and Daddy Twofoot - Oddwen, Sandyman - Pitch, and I was the Gaffer (turned out I had a lot more lines than I thought, but I really enjoyed reading his lines). We did this completely as just a dialogue (or multi-logue, anyway), it was really nice.

After that, Gwathagor came to join us and we did the "second generation", as Pitch had called it, of the inn-talk: the Green Dragon scene with young Gamgee and young Sandyman. I did the narrator part, Gwath and Pitch had each brought a pint of beer to their computers and thus the second famous conversation was replayed.

This wasn't enough for Gwath, apparently, and he proposed the daring (and dangerous for him, as you will see) idea that we continue from that point and, his own words, "keep reading on (the conversation between Gandalf and Frodo in the Shadow of the Past) until somebody else comes online to join us". I think neither of us had realised up to then how much most of the chapter consists of Gandalf's monologues. I think Gwathagor (whom me and Pitch had convinced, based on our earlier experiences of him reading Gandalf, that he should do the wizard) must have had a sore throat in the end. Pitch was the narrator and Sam (I think the Gamgees with a slight German accent are really just brilliant) and I did Frodo. This reading was also rather enjoyable and I think, most of all, that we must have set a record by this - we've basically read the whole chapter plus quite a lot of the first chapter, too. I think there can't be any better and more "proper" way to celebrate Bilbo's birthday, except if we'd read about the Party itself.

Then Gwath again left us and in a moment, Eönwë came and we did the last reading of the day - or actually evening - and I think that was the best wrap-up of it all. We decided to read a small part from Three Is a Company, when Frodo, Sam and Pippin leave the house, up to the point when they fall asleep (or, as we phrased it, "up to the fox"). The cast was: Eönwë - narrator AND the fox, myself - Frodo and Pippin, Pitch - Sam and Gaffer Gamgee (who was overheard talking to the Black Rider at the very beginning of the scene - and this time splendidly performed by Pitch). This was a brilliant reading for the evening, rather suggestive especially with Eönwë's narrating, and a great wrap-up of the whole session. I could just lie down and pretend to be in the Shire, with the night slowly setting...

Overall we did a lot more reading than usual, I would say, which I think was really nice, and must once again say that I feel like that was the proper way to celebrate the Hobbits' birthday. Still, the chance to do some more skype-meeting during the weekend especially for those, who haven't managed to find the time to participate in this one, is still present, and I think there are still many of us who wouldn't mind doing some more.

OK, what happened in LotR in early December? Nothing (Fellowship still at Rivendell), except lots of hanging around in the Hall of Fire, Elves singing, ladidadida. And in TH? We did indeed read The Old Forest/In the House of Tom Bombadil in the unforgettable Night of the Kazoo (q.v. above). We could read Fog on the Barrow Downs, I think that was discussed at one time but never actually done.

Narrator
Frodo
Sam
Merry
Pippin
Bombadil
BarryWight
7 roles.

Rather hefty for the amount of people we tend to have participating these days, but the Barrow-wight actually has only a few lines of poetry and could do another role as well, and someone could probably do two of the hobbits or some such.

I'd like to hear Nog as Bombadil for a change, I think he's the better singer.

Speaking of you, Nog, if we do an actual reading again this time, would you by any chance have the tech wizardry to record it?

12-02-2011, 06:26 PM
Well, you're offering me quite a challenge... singing Tom and being a tech-wizard.

Hmm... well, if we are doing the Barrow Downs scene, I can give Tom a try, but I can't promise anything for the recording stuff (I can't record anything online as such as I need to hear things myself, but I'll see if I could put up some monitoring stuff to overcome that).

Anyone knowing Skype better than me (which isn't a lot) having an idea if Skype calls can be recorded from the program itself?

Anyway. How many are we going to be? Oddwen, Aganzir, Pitchwife & me?

Now I know Legate has come to Finland today, so which would be the odds to get him + Lommy & Greenie to join if this would take place on Sunday evening? I can ask them - and you Aganzir should do it as well...

With that much more people around we might consider some scene with more characters...

I am very tempted to make time for this reading! You all know I love reading aloud and I'd be delighted to "meet" all of you again virtually. Is this now planned for Sunday? Approximately when (CET)? And I'll need someone to help me if I don't find my way to the Skype meeting place...

Grr, to Mordor with schedule changes without warning. I won't be able to chat tomorrow, but I'll be on, if distracted by cooking, from now until I pass out from chocolate consumption or sleep.

 for there being no Oddwen tomorrow. (I got home from the party half an hour ago and may hang around for an hour or so, if you're still interested in a little chat.)

On the other hand, :D for the chance of an Esty tomorrow!

Is this now planned for Sunday? Approximately when (CET)?
Apparently. As to when, these things usually just tend to happen sooner or later in the European evening, but with Nog having to get up early on Monday, we might actually try to agree on a time in advance - how does, say, 8pm Esty's and my time sound to you all? Or earlier, since you Finns are an hour or two ahead of us?

And I'll need someone to help me if I don't find my way to the Skype meeting place...
Just click on the Skype icon under my avvie, send me a text message and I'll add you.

Well... I may need to withdraw this evening's reading. I'm not being definitive as yet, but I hold it more probable than not. :(

I only realised yesterday evening that I have a way too many essays to read for the next week (and I have full workdays every day & theatre- and choir performances etc. almost every evening) so I may be in some trouble actually - especially as Legate, Lommy & Greenie are coming to my place the next weekend and I'd hate to read essays during their visit... (the deadline is next Monday)

But if you are doing it somewhat later in the evening, like 8 or 9 PM GMT (Finland is in +2 hours I think), I might be able to join if a) I have managed to read enough essays before then, or b) if I'm tired enough just not to read any more of the essays.

But if that later time is bad for you others, don't wait for me as it is fairly possible I will not have a chance to join anyway.

That's 9 Finntime, it should be doable. I have an enormous amount of schoolwork to catch up with and a demonstration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Rights_Day) to organise for Saturday, but all that means is that I should stop procrastinating now. ;)

We just read Fog on the Barrow-Downs. Esty narrated, Pitch did Frodo & Tom Bombadil and I was the Barrow-Wight and the rest of the hobbits. As a special guest, we had The Barrow-Wight himself, who only listened this time though. It was great fun.

Now sally is here as well and we might read another chapter. If someone else is around, they're welcome to join!

Estelyn Telcontar
12-04-2011, 03:57 PM
The three of us read another passage, this time with Sally as audience - another Downer who dares to join in without having a book at hand! We shall have to charge admission!

We read the second half of "The Stairs of Cirith Ungol", with Pitch narrating, Agan speaking Frodo, and Esty taking on the task of two such diverse roles as Sam and Gollum. Yess, Preciousss!

Aganzir

Esty makes a fantastic Gollum. Who would have believed?

Pitchwife
12-05-2011, 01:54 PM
So she does. I felt she was a particularly fitting choice for this chapter, where Gollum is on the brink of redemption - her performance brought out Sméagol's loneliness, his longing for company and his budding affection for Frodo as well as Gollum's hidden sneaky-creepiness very well.

Agan was very convincing too, both as a scary Barrow-wight and as exhausted, ring-weary Frodo offset nicely by Esty's happy-go-lucky Sam.

I very much enjoyed talking to both of you again - it's been a while since Finlandmoot. And having The Barrow-Wight (Himself) join our conversation spontaneously and be our audience was a unique experience - a bit like having the Prime Minister for dinner and a bit like sighting Nessie;). I'd like to testify that he isn't anywhere near as scary as his Middle-earth namesake, but very friendly and pleasant to talk to. Thanks for attending, Mr. Wight, and for the kind words you found for our little project!

Okay what was supposed to be a short reading call on my part is still going on. We have just concluded that after casting the Silmaril into the sea, Maglor went insane, grew a massive beard and started living in a forest. Singing Ding-a-dong dillo. Also, I put my headphones back on when Hookbill was just saying how he wants to be Durin III's pet, he can give him a shiny collar and everything.
He, Eönwë, G55 and I have also read lots of Tolkien poems in English, Finnish, Russian, Swedish, Hungarian, and Hebrew.

One of Goldberry's cleaning days, probably.

It was a lot of fun! Tolkien's songs and poems are always a delight. I wish I knew more of them by heart. We had 'In Moria in Khazad-dum', 'Gil-Gallad', 'Old Tom Bombadil', and many Rohiric songs! We need to do this again some time!

We did indeed have a Skype call today. G55, Legate, Lommy, Hookbill, and eventually Oddwen came and talked for a while. Even Agan made an appearance. It was great fun. We started out reading various poems in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit in different languages, and later discussed Aule and beards. We managed to stay quite on task until Legate and Lommy left, and G55 left for the first time. It was just Hookbill and me for a little while, then Oddwen came in and added fun to the party. G55 came back in for a while, I'm not sure exactly when it was, due to my internet cutting out occasionally. All in all, we had a most enjoyable conversation. I think this has been my most enjoyable Skyping yet, actually. It went smoothly and we started off with Tolkien. I look forward to more in the future.
