Welcome to the Phantasy Team Competition!

Before I list the rules for this year's competition, we need to take care of one team's roster. That team?

Tol In Gaurhoth!! :cool:

For their previous years of hard work in putting on the tournament, Nog, Skip, and I are on the team. Boro would be on the team, but he is Arda Cup President and Head-Ref, and thus it would be quite unfair for him to play for a team.

So, there are EIGHT open slots on the team. I am reserving THREE of those spots for the first three Downers that announce their participation in the Phantasy Competition if this year is their first time playing.

That means there are currently FIVE slots open to election.

As of now everyone is allowed five total votes for either nominating or seconding. Anyone that receives four votes is in immediately, and if not enough Downers have received the necessary number of votes by the end of next week I will simply take whoever received the most votes.

Arda Kicker Magazine (AKM) will be following the Arda Cup closely as previous years. But as the editor of the magazine I warmly welcome any new publications to make their own reviews of the games or the celebrity-stuff around the tournament - or whatever anyone of you comes up with.

The more people are involved in other ways than just putting in a team the better!

Btw. all of you new to the game, don't get scared by the different analysis on the teams beforehand in the "storyline-thread". It just feels like me and Boro are horses that have been left out to the grassland from the barn after a long winter for the first time... :rolleyes:

We will be writing a lot of stuff during the tournament but we have no special knowledge pertaining to the actual game mechanics (otherwise we would not be able to compete in the phantasy-game). Later on, when the games start, tp will send us the results of "our games" (games we're going to report on) after we have done our own team-adjustments for the round in question.

Also, I'm calling for you all to come up with your own commentaries into the storyline-thread. Come up with a blog, a picture agency, a news network, a gossip-magazine, whatever you come up with. (look for the example of Nilp!). It is not that only certain people are allowed to take a bigger role in there. On the contrary. The more voices, the merrier games we'll have!

phantom will be releasing the final rosters (and hopefully the groups as well) pretty soon and then it should be easy for anyone to start speculating... And even before that, send your reporter to make the all inclusive interview of any star-player you wish!


And anyway, it is also perfectly legal (and what I think most people do) to just follow the official results and ignore all the speculative sports-commentary, and just update your phantasy team every once in a while... :)

I am pleased to announce the establishment of The Underground, a news syndicate founded and run by Messrs. Kuruharan & Chrysophylax from their remote but luxurious hold of Narag-zigil in the lovely Ered Rhun overlooking Dorwinion and the tranquil Sea of Rhun. (If you’ve never heard of Narag-zigil then you aren’t playing the right Tolkien games.)

The Underground will report on the Arda Cup free from the biased reporting of the corporate mainstream news agencies and from...underground. I promise we will be your one stop shop for all the scandals, sob stories, crass and tacky spouses, inconvenient relatives, bribery (we take all forms of currency), embarrassing photos (whatever a “photo” is), indiscreet tweets (we even have our eyes on those naughty birds), drunken orgies, political hack jobs, wet work, felonies, high torts, misdemeanors and all the other politically incorrect shenanigans that make the Arda Cup what it is that the corporate media wants to pretend does not exist.

Blind- the tournament will move at a speed that suits the participants and writers while trying to drag as little as possible. Basically, once the tournament officially starts we writers will move it along as quickly as we possibly can while giving everyone reasonable opportunity to make trades. If there is a time period where you are without internet, you can request another participant to make necessary trades for you (such as in the playoffs when you own players that are eliminated, someone will replace them for you).

(If you're simply wanting a rough idea, two years ago the first match of group play was posted 6/8 and the final was posted 7/11. Last year the first match was 4/12 and the final was 7/8. So, as you can see- very very different. We like to keep things moving, but we'll do what we have to do to make sure that everyone that wants to play is able to.)

To Blind (and all newcomers): In practise it means that when the results of one round of games are released there will be a few days for the participants to make their trades - and then the next round games are released...

So there will be kind of deadline-days like every fourth or fith day (or something along the lines) - so you don't have to be active every day, just check the thread in every few days to see when the next deadline for trades is and how your players have fared - and take a look who to trade in for your weakest links.

And like said, to those who wish for more, there will be all kinds of statistics and analysis (for getting a better grasp of the team's qualities) and interviews, background stories - and hey, yeah, Kuru's yelllow papers (for entertainment).

For those who wish to delve deep into this there is also the chance of creating your own media-outlet and start contributing to either the stats & analysis or journalistic / human interest / scandal storylines...

(I also included next to each team a couple words to describe their style. "Attacking", "defensive", "conservative", and "lockdown with lead" should be easy to understand. "Shifting" means they more commonly move up back players for offensive support and move back front players for defensive support. "Balance" on the other hand means they don't overhelp on either end. "Flexible" denotes situational changes in style based upon whether they're behind, tied, or leading. "Pressure" indicates they persue the ball aggressively and don't allow easy possession anywhere on the field. "Counter-attack" suggests that they often try quick transitions up to their front players when recovering possession, meaning long balls from the defense and deep runs from the forwards to instigate breakaway opportunities. "Possession" means that the team keeps opponents from scoring by owning the ball themselves and generally builds up attacks carefully with quick passes.)

The Arda Cup Committee has tried their best to make most of the groups fairly focused geographically so as to allow for as many fanbases as possible to travel to see their team play.

(In case you don't know how the tournament works, every team plays each team in its own group and the two teams from each group that perform the best advance to a single elimination playoff.)

If you have any questions regarding any of these rules, just ask. I promise you it's not as complicated as it may look at first glance- just ask the players from last year.

You will select your team members from the rosters available here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=656468&postcount=50), and will be awarded points according to how your players fare in their tournament games. Please put a bolded -> C after one of your players. That means that player is your team captain, and will gain (or lose) double point value.

You must have one GK (goal keeper) and then you can use one of the following formations found below. (Formations listed as DF-MF-FW)

In other words, if you choose 4-4-2, then you want to place 4 defenders, 4 midfielders, and 2 fowards on your team along with the goalie of your choice.

In addition, you may not choose more than 3 players from one single team.

Rules for gaining points are as follows.

Goal by DF- 6 pts
Assist- 3 pts

Once again we're going to have a star system for drafting your team. Players with a star are considered to be solid players with a higher liklihood of scoring than other players at that position. Players with 2 stars are the cream of the crop, and are the most likely to gain points at the position. The team an individual plays on and his/her name recognition and past performances can contribute somewhat to star status. There is no guarantee that star players will score more- it's just more likely.

The team that you select may not exceed FOUR total stars at this time. (This number will increase as the rounds go by.)

Note on the rosters- If MFs or DFs are listed lower down the roster (towards the FWs), then they are more likely to find themselves involved in the offense than those MFs or DFs listed higher up towards the GK. Of course, there is no guarantee MFs listed closer to FWs will score more, but their chances are generally better.

Note on trades- After the first two rounds of group play, you can draft a completely new team. Unlimited trades. After the third and final round of group play, you are allowed seven trades. After the first playoff round, you are allowed only three trades. After the quarterfinals and semifinals you are allowed only two trades. Do not under any circumstances edit your old teams once play has started. If you want to trade someone, make a new post stating the trade and list your new team. (If any of that is unclear, watch the way other players do it and you'll get the idea very quickly.)

GROUP PREDICTIONS

Predict the winner and runner up from each of the eight groups. Predicting the winner is worth 3 points. The runner up is worth 1. If you select the correct two teams but have their positions reversed, you will be awarded 2 points. So that's a possible thirty-two points right there. Don't skip this!

PLAYOFF POINTS

During the playoffs you will be able to gain points for correct predictions, but obviously you can't do anything with that until much later. I'll remind everyone when it is time.

Typing this I just remembered my first team in these tournaments a few years ago. I had a principle that I only chose beauties and beasts eg. females and "odd ones". I'm very happy to see that my first team this year has quite a nice amount of the similar feeling (the defensive side is a bit against that principle but the midfield and offence loook pretty good indeed from that POV).

Although I'm a bit sad not seeing my Arda Cup team favourites Tar Telperion, Miriel, Nerdanel and Aredhel on board right now. But I have to be opportunistic enough every once in a while... :)

At first (before the tournament) I thought I would be more or less changing my whole team just looking at the next matches during the group-play. Then I thought (today) that I would only change one or two players as I was happy about my team. The outcome is, well, something of the middle... (I haven't lost faith with Westernesse, I just think the odds are Tol Eressëa will score once anyway thus reducing the points of the GK & the DF's) :rolleyes:

But hey, I'm still trusting on my FW-trio, and even if Khamûl brought me zero points he will not let me down two games in a row... and I am not even considering recruiting Túrin or Fëanor into my team at this point (I think I have had both of them maybe once or twice in a relatively late part of the tournament in the earlier years - and I think I'm not changing it - I need to score points without them!). There is something called pride, like hybris appearing before nemesis. And anyway, someone has to try different routes... :D

Let's see how long will I fight against recruiting them this time around...

Yeah, that's the basic general assumptions to make.

Last year I had only done the 16 playoff teams and ranked them here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=629418&postcount=91).

And I just rated each teams offense, defense, and goal keeping on a scale of 1 to 5, then combined them to give an overall. I was happy with how the rankings turned out, and how fairly close they were. Even though Gondolin was ranked 5th I thought they were one of the super powers and they wound up winning. Vinyamar was 6th, and finished 2nd. With Mithrim finishing 3rd and Utumno 4th, so I was quite pleased with how that turned out last year.

However, that took so much time it was impossible for me to keep up, so this year I just basically did the same thing as Nilp, ranked teams from 1 to 32, and just kept the goal keeping part, since I do think goalies play a significant enough role in a teams chances, that they should be separated from the defense.

Then I've just been eye-balling everything and going from there. It also helps that someone else is doing it, to double-check against. :)

I just wish I had better success at picking the right players for my team, I've never done well at that, other than a few years ago, refusing to follow the Miriel bandwagon. :p

I figure for this round I should jump on the Turin-bandwagon just to keep up - especially since Doriath is playing Shire-Bree. I won't go so far as to captain him, though. My darling NerWolf is there because so far Silent Watcher hasn't impressed me as Mordor's GK, and I think we've got a pretty good shot at scoring several times against him. I do back Misty Mountains as my personal favorite to win, but I don't expect them to do extremely well against Wilderland, which is why I dropped Chief Wolf and Durin's Bane (that and I needed another star for Turin). I'll probably pick them both back up later in the tournament.

Well, my plan is to follow last year's format. So unless something changes for some reason....

After this final round of group play you will be allotted SEVEN trades and SEVEN stars (and one white tree, har har).

After the first round of the playoffs you will be allowed EIGHT stars, but only THREE trades.

After the quarterfinals you are allowed NINE stars, only THREE trades again, but you will be allowed at that point to feature FOUR players per squad on your team.

Before the final round the star limit is TEN, and once again THREE trades.

Well, if you're truly away for that long you may return and find that your entire team has been eliminated and you haven't been around to replace them. :eek: :p

If not, perhaps you should designate someone to replace any of your players that get eliminated, and give them some sort of loose instructions such as, "Should any of my players become inactive, consider first replacing them with players from team X (if team X is still alive), and then team Y (if...), and then team Z (etc.).

But if you have no time or interest to read both games, read the game between Pelori and Valinor. Meh, it was fine, a good read. You built the tension up nicely--although, of course, there was much tension to begin with in the second game, but even the first game was riveting. (And the latter one was fantastic!)

Yay Nilp! As you ask, if you could get the blue changed into the "BD-bone-green" it would be even more awesome, but it pretty cool anyway - and better than a pic of a "trophy" anyway.Thanks for the tip. (But I'll have to ask my brother's help with more sophisticated photo-editing programs--that change would be beyond my meagre Paint skills. :D )
