I like the Witch King, but I had to go with Morgoth. After all, he defied the best efforts of elves and men to defeat him. Only by direct "divine" intervention was he vanquished.

Well, i guess Gothmog isn't a choice, and neither are Gluarung or Smaug. Out of the ones listed, Sauron was pretty cool, he was just so damn persistant(you have to admire that), just kept reforming and coming back to terrorize. My favorites I think are Gluarung and Smaug. Gluarung helped make one of my favorite stories, and Smaug help start the books off.

Though I've chosen the Barrow-Wight as a nick for here and at the web page, the wight was really just a subordinate of te Witch-king who in turn was a slave of Sauron!

Re: Hey!
Sauron of Course, The Ring Lord....but in the Silmarillion I think he shows the true depth of his evil:
Sauron talking to Gorlim after capturing him:
"Sauron said: 'I hear now that thou wouldst barter with me. What is thy price?' And Gorlim answered that he should find Eilinel again, and with her be set free; for he thought that Eilinel also had been made captive. Then Sauron smiled, saying: 'That is a small price for so great a treachery. So shall it surely be. Say on!' Now Gorlim would have drawn back, but daunted by the eyes of Sauron he told at last all that he would know. Then Sauron laughed; and he mocked Gorlim, and revealed to him that he had seen only a phantom devised by wizardry to entrap him; for Eilinel was dead. 'Nonetheless I will grant thy power,' said Sauron; 'and thou shalt go to Eilinel, and be set freeof my service.' The he put him cruely to death."
Oh!!! Talk about evil. That defines it. Right there.

Re: Who is your favorite "Bad Guy".
Sauron certainly seems the most deliberately cruel whereas Morgoth seems more big picture. Kind of like Mengele vs Hitler. However, Ungoliant (who is not on the list) would probably be a good candidate for "most" evil in the raw sense of the word. I guess she's not in the running since she's not likely to be anyone's "favorite".

Re: Who is your favorite "Bad Guy".
It has to be the Lord of the Nazgul, Witch-king of Angmar, Lord of the Nine, Black Rider, Servant of Sauron! Sure, he may be slightly lesser than the rest but hey, give him a break! Riding on a giant black thing resembling a...um, turd, would be cool, especially flying that quickly. Hmmm...not being able to see properly is a bit of a drawback though.

Everybody has a soft spot for old Morgoth. Me, personally, I love to hate him. Did I mention I could take him anyday? He gives some real purpose to the books. If not for him, Arda would be Arda Unmarred, but hey, how interesting is that? Would you read a book about how well the harvest did this year, or how happy everyone was? YAAAAAWWWWN Boring! The Books NEED him.

Re: Who is your favorite "Bad Guy".
I would have to go with the Witch King of Angmar. While his power was not on the level of Morgoth or Sauron his interaction with the Fellowship ( stabbing Frodo, the face-off with Gandalf, etc.) made him a more tangible evil and he served the unblinking eye with undead resolve.

Sauron, no doubt about it. He's so cool, so good, so... stupid!
He lost his war 'coz he didn't pay attention to a little, small, weaponless hobbit...
He's the best!

Melkor. Sauron was a disciple of Melkor and a shadow (though a big one to be sure!) of his master. They were both jerks! (I wish Fingolfin would have got Melkor in a headlock, rubbed his face in the dirt, and then gave him a big wedgie in front all the onlooking hosts of Angband!)

Sauron deffinatly if he hadnt have made such a stupid mistake as putting most of his power in a stupid little destructable thing than I wouldnt have been able to see elves and all.But if you think about it than none of the bad guys would be a favorite, but just to have some fun......why do I like sauron?and not like the others?I like sauron 'cause of what that one person said about him not seeing two harmless little hobbits bearing one thing that should have been so easy for him to detect in his own land no less. And i dont like him 'cause he sent so many enemys after mister Frodo and all.I never liked Gollum,to slinky and when he jumped on mister Frodo (when I was carrying him up the mountain)I almost kicked him. What do I know about Morgoth? Nothing,I'm just a hobbit

I would have to say morgoth himself... without morgoth there would be no Sauron, no balrogs, nor dragons, no orcs goblins and hobgoblins... Life would simply be boring. After all good cannot exist without evil, so we might as well give credit to teh guy that started it all And besides Morgoth did alot in his time including wrecking the world earl on.. quite an accomplishment.. but thats simply my views

i think you can look to the free peoples to discover a few bad guys, for example, Maeglin was possibly the "baddest" of all because of his evil lustfull desire for Idril and the throne of Gondolin and hatred of Tuor and Earendil. Also, the three middle sons of Feanor had a lot to be disired. Although Caranthir was named the dark, Celegorm probably showed most evil intent. Grima also was a slimy little sod. However i hate al the above characters, may favourite would have to be the Witch King, the most visible face of all that is bad.

I'm in the minority who've voted for Saruman.
While Morgoth and Sauron are a lofty unreachable evil, and while Gollum is a pitiable tortured fool, Saruman is a vindictive traitor.
And he just doesn't quit! Knowing that there is nothing to accomplish, he still does his dirty work in the Shire, just for spite!
His fallen stature, and the inevitable comparison with Gandalf, make him a first rate villain in my book!

Ok who ever you are I wouldnt call Sam a bad guy he doesnt like Gollum because he is a good guy-does that make sense?-Gollum had turned bad and you cant really blame Sam for not trusting Gollum,he could never be good again.I asked a question once about Gollum if he had lived would he ever be free of the lust of the ring? The answer was no Frodo had born the ring only a short while and he would never be free-remember he was deppressed and sick every March 25-and Gollum bore that darn thing for ages and ages so he was permantly CORRUPT.And Sam -being an honest, loyal caracter-could never trust Gollum,so really Sam is a major good guy and without Sam,Frodo would never had made it to Mordor(hint:Shelob)alone.Did that make sense?

ps I used to pity Gollum too until I got the answer to my question, thanks Mr Erik sir

First, Gollum almost turned good at least once, before Shelob's lair, but it was *Sam* that insulted him and pushed him back to bad, for good.
And second, it was a joke, dude, get a sense of humor.

An interesting discussion, albeit not very deep. But it all goes to show that Tolkien knew what he was doing. Not just one bad guy but a series to keep tension in the stories and to give us some suspense. At times the up-close bad guy makes us forget about the faraway bad guy, Morgoth. You can't have the master bad guy on the scene all the time or in each and every scene. Just one more piece of evidence that Tolkien knew very well how a story goes together.

Sam: Gollum did not start out bad. It was the influence of the Ring. (There's a topic somewhere called "Gollum's motives" or something, where enep and I discuss this.)
Because the Ring had so much influence over Gollum, it is hard to say that he is "bad", when it is not his will but the will of the Ring which is directing him.
Frankly, I think that if Sam had been in Gollum's original position, at the river with Deagol, he quite likely would have done the same thing, and ended up in much the same way.

He kinda was, he didn't take the ring from Frodo, he never even really tried. On the other hand, Deagol didn't even put it on and Smeagol took it. Or something like that. Anyway, Sam seems to have been a better person than Smeagol was.

Only Gilthalion agrees with me!!
How can you not like Saruman! Oh sure I'm sorry for Gollum but he's one of the istarii! He started out as the wisest, cleverest, best of the lot! (Unless you were wise enough to know that was really Gandalf.)
And he turned into a low down mean evil wicked villian reduced to spitefully cutting down trees! He's spitefull and nasty and, well, evil!

I hafta agree with Hanna on this one. I think Saruman was the best villain. He was charming and a deep thinker. While Sauron and Melkor were the most evil, Saruman managed to figure out what would hurt his enemies most and then strike there. A good little sociopathic trick, if I do say so myself.

Mine has to be the 'Witch King' Lord of Nazgul, Khamul, Black Rider etc, etc.
He just creeps me out. The reason for this is cos you get to 'meet' him close up in LOTR whereas Sauron is just a presence from afar.

When it comes to "favorite", I'd have to say poor Gollum, because at least we see some vulnerability in him, and can imagine that he has at least some shred of decency in him.
As for who is best at being a bad guy, I have to admit that the Mouth of Sauron has always fascinated me. He was described as being "crueler than any orc", and I'll bet that a recounting of his (mis)deeds would prove pretty ugly.

I agree with Findorfin...the Witch King is a great bad guy, because he is really scary. Even though we know he was once a man, he has become a Shadow being. I think it's great the way we are introduced to them in the LOTR books-they were shadows in the night! Who's not afraid of the dark and unknown! Not knowing exactly what he IS , and what he is capable of, makes him terrifying. Whereas, Morgoth and Sauron ARE really bad, but they often get others to do their dirty work while they sit back and watch.

Actually Gandalf, Sauron wasn't that stupid. Although he didn't do the physical fighting, he was the brains of the operation, so to speak. He thought up the evil schemes himself, but sent others to do it. Besides, if I were Sauron, I wouldn't want to be seen without a body.

Sauron wasn't always a sheerly "behind-the-scenes" kind of guy, and it's very likely that once he had recovered his Ring he would've become quite the military badass. I wouldn't discredit him for knowing when to be strategic and when to assert himself with personal confrontation. I highly doubt anyone in Middle-earth at the time of the War of the Ring would've welcomed a fight with Sauron...even with an army behind them.

Although Sauron, Melkor, and the Witch King are all very bad villains, my favorite bad guy was Gollum. In some parts of LotR, I felt sorry for Gollum, but in other parts I hated him ( Like when Shelob stung Frodo and I thought he was dead for a while). But overall, he was good deep down inside, below the layers of corruption. I also enjoyed the way he talked too!

Was nobody spooked on the Paths of the Dead? Was Shelob a sweety? The Balrog a hug-a-bear?
But seriously, who really was the brains behind all the cruel mischief? It seems that Goldberry had everyone fooled all along.....

I enjoyed the combined humor and intrigue of Gollum, Bilbo's evil twin.

I'd have to say my favorite bad guy is the Newly Deceased Wight who re-opened the Balrog wings thread

The ultimate villain is definitely Melkor. He was so mighty and so cruel. The way he handeled with Hurin and his family was the most evil and horrible deed that was ever done in the history of Arda. Anyways Melkor is the bloody CREATOR and MASTER of all evil itself so there mustn't be any doubt that Melkor is the greatest villain of all.

Re: Who is your favorite "Bad Guy".
Well... I must think about it...
... Witch-King of Angmar, I think. Lord of the Nazgul is cooler than Sauron... Of chourse!
And the way he died makes him more cooler. No man could kill him; so it must be woman and hobbit killing him! What an idea!
So... I voted Lord of the Nazgul. Sauron is also cool, but he was too easy to slain.. Nice if he could be seen in book. Anyway, he's good bad guy.
About Morgoth I don't know, I've not readen Silmarillion.
Saruman was one fool thinking he serves himsef, but really helped Sauron the Great!
And Gollum... I don't think his bad at all. He was just poor little guy who wanted the Ring... He's not bad. It's wrong to say him bad.

Ugluk
There was no mention of either Ugluk or Grishnahk which created a problem for me. However, Saruman was a real bad guy but was destroyed by the direct consequences of his evil- i.e Grima. Reduced to his most pathetic form he lost hius form in a way similar to Sauron: shadow rising up and blown away. However, my favourite bad guy was Ugluk- the only real example of an orc- and an Uruk at that- that was characterized. It took Eomer to slay him- he even had to get off his horse to do it. Not to mention Ugluk's driving of the orc party so far- he beat even Wingfoot himself! (several hours start, lengthened to a couple of days). There is something about evil driven to desperation that strikes a chord. Anyone agree?

Saruman, He has cool lines, is inventive, great lackeys,
smokes a pipe and lived in two of the coolest places in middle-earth. Not to mention all the betrayal involved, betraying those who trust you makes for great villiany .

I say Sauron because he's cool, cold and calculated. Undetered, no matter how great his defeats, in a applying his plan. Where as Morgoth (using Morgoths Ring as a source) suffered from "nihilistic madness". He just wanted to destroy everything untill there wasn't anything left to destroy.
The psycho.

I voted Saruman, but after reading the replys, i've changed my mind.
Saruman - The arguement was made that Saruman was the baddest because he was a Maiar and became a traitor. By that logic Melkor would be the baddest, as a former Vala. By TA 3000 he was being heavily influenced by Sauron vai the palantir, much the same way Denethor II was. He was simply powerhungry. And sure he was spiteful, but many would be after such a fall from glory.
Gollum - The guy you love to hate, but he really wasn't that bad, blame it on the ring.
Witch King - Its really hard to say how bad this guy was, i've not read about him as he was previous to becoming a slave to Sauron. With Sauron in complete control of him through the ring, he might have been a mere puppet, a long distance reflection of Sauron himself. Who knows if his true nature shown through any at all.
Sauron - I don't doubt there are passages in HOME expressing the full extent of his maliciousness, but in the big picture, he was just playing his cards trying to take over middle-earth. I don't see any great deeds of terror from him.
Melkor - The greatest of traitors. Cause of all evil and wrong in Arda. Leader of the rebellion including several Maiar. The light of the Two Trees would not have been ended by Ungoliant had it not been for him. His theft of the Silmarilli led to the loss of two of them. While Sauron may have been content with Middle-Earth, there can be little doubt that Melkor wanted it all. "Bad Guy"
P.S. None of these guys come even close to the grotesque evil horor that is Lord Foul. -Thomas Covenant Chronicals by Steven Donaldson.

I have to say Sauron. I mean Morgoth was great but he didn't strike a deep fear and since of dread in me. That doesn't mean I would go up to him and **** on his boot and then laugh at him, just that he didn't scare me enough. Saruman scared me but not as much as Sauron. I mean he did some of his cruelest work in The Simarillion. Those of you that say that the reason you didn't vote for him was because he didn't think of one little thing. It is almost always the little things that get you in the end. As for some guy named Lord Foul being better than all of them. I have never really heard of him except for an obscure reference to him on some website but I doubt that he could take on and defeat most of the people on this poll. But I won't say why because I don't know the guy.

Morgoth is hardcore.
Gollum the Great
09-18-2008, 07:39 PM
1st. Curunir (I mean, wheels and forges and weapons and fires and an unbreakable tower...)
2nd. Gollum (small, corrupt, agile, aged, I could go on for days listing his marvelous qualities) and Morgoth (he's awesome)
3rd. Glaurung. Able to make a strong-willed person lose her memory, and destroy a forest and hold men still with his eyes, and notice things he can't see, and on and on...
4th. A tie between Carcharoth (did I miss spell that?) and the Witch-King. One broke the Girdle of Melian and scorned a Silmaril-well, I guess it was unwise- and the other spread fear like nobody's business and was one of the pinnacles of sheer awesomeness.
5th. All dragons and Balrogs from M-E collectively.
