The Phantasy Team Competition is fast approaching!!

Tell your friends, tell your enemies, and tell those people you don't really talk to! :)

Last season that yearly powerhouse Gwath took home the title for the second time, finishing well clear of everyone else in the field. Can anyone stop him from repeating?

Perhaps another past champion, Skip, or Boro, will make their own argument for being the greatest of all time. Or maybe some perpetual threat, like Nog, or Nerwen, will finally break through.

Or what of Sally, Shasta, Nilp, Morm, or Eomer- all have had bright spots. Perhaps this is the year that everything comes together for them.

But yet again, we could be treated to a surprise- perhaps Galadriel or Inzil will catapult ahead after learning the ropes their rookie season. Or maybe an old hand will return to us in glorious fashion- Wilwa, McCaber, Steve, Fea-Ni, Hakon, Lari, Glirdan, TGEW...

Or could a fresh face unexpectedly shake things up?

Before I list the rules for this year's competition, we need to take care of some business, and we need your help.

We need to vote on the roster for Tol In Gaurhoth!! :cool:

Per tradition (and as a reward for lots of game-writing and organization), Nog and I are on the team, as is Nilp for his article-writing and brackets and charts and match-writing contributions this year.

So, there are EIGHT open slots on the team. I am reserving THREE of those spots for the first three Downers that announce their participation in the Phantasy Competition if this year is their first time playing.

That means there are currently FIVE slots open to election.

As of now everyone is allowed five total votes for either nominating or seconding. Anyone that receives four votes is in immediately, and if not enough Downers have received the necessary number of votes by the end of next week I will simply take the highest vote getters.

Selecting Your Team

Select your team members from the rosters available (the rosters are one post down). You will be awarded points according to how your players fare in their tournament games.

You must have one GK (goal keeper) and then you can use one of the following formations found below. (Formations listed as DF-MF-FW)

5-4-1
4-5-1
3-6-1
4-4-2
4-3-3

(In other words, if you choose 4-4-2, then you want to place 4 defenders, 4 midfielders, and 2 fowards on your team along with the goalie of your choice.)

You may not choose more than 3 players from one single team.

Place a bolded "C" after one of your players-> C. This player will be your captain and will earn (or lose) you double points.

Some players have stars (*) next to them. You are allowed a total of FOUR stars on your roster. This number will increase as the tournament advances.

Players with a star are considered to be solid players with a higher likelihood of scoring than other players at that position. Players with 2 stars are the cream of the crop, and are the most likely to gain points at the position. The team an individual plays on, that team's philosophy, the player's name recognition, and past performance can all contribute somewhat to star status. There is no guarantee that star players will score more- it's just more likely.

If MFs or DFs are listed lower down the roster (towards the FWs), then they are more likely to find themselves involved in the scoring than those MFs or DFs listed higher up towards the GK. Of course, there is no guarantee MFs & DFs listed closer to FWs will score more, but their chances are generally better.

Note on trades- After the first two rounds of group play, you can draft a completely new team. Unlimited trades. After the third and final round of group play, you are allowed SEVEN trades. After the first playoff round, you are allowed only THREE trades. After the quarterfinals and semifinals you are allowed only TWO trades. Do not under any circumstances edit your old teams once play has started. If you want to trade a player, make a new post stating the trade and list your new team. (If any of that is unclear, watch the way other players do it and you'll get the idea very quickly.)

Rules for gaining points are as follows.

Goal by FW- 4 pts
Goal by MF- 5 pts
Goal by DF- 6 pts
Assist- 3 pts
Shutout, GK- 4 pts
Shutout, DF- 4 pts
Shutout, MF- 1 pt
Allows 1 goal, GK- 2 pts
Allows 1 goal, DF- 2 pts
3 GK saves- 2 pts
Yellow Card- -1 pts
Red Card- -3 pts

GROUP PREDICTIONS

Predict the winner and runner up from each of the eight groups (the groups are listed in the next post down). Predicting the winner is worth 3 points. The runner up is worth 1. If you select the correct two teams but have their positions reversed, you will be awarded 2 points.

BUY A TEAM

You can have a total salary of 100 million. The rosters with salaries listed is here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=668424&postcount=34). Put together the highest scoring team you possibly can for 100 million or less. This team will not change throughout the tournament- it's just a one-time deal. At the finish of the tournament we'll see which person's 100-mill squad scored the most, and that person will gain 10 bonus points. (Formations allowed are all those listed above, plus 3-4-3.)

(I am saying that because - as I have noticed already when picking the "normal" team - if I could, I would make my team completely out of midfielders, since basically the best characters and the ones I'd like to have in my team are all there. Not that I like the others less, but when making this one, I have more than once encountered the situation where I would've put an absolutely perfect character into my team, who would perfectly fit point-wise, only had he/she been a defender instead of midfielder.)

And it is not the same every year, even if there are some "constants" - like Fëanor, Túrin, Ar Pharazôn and Miriel I think have all been forwards every year and Elrond and Huan have been goalkeepers - and probably many others have a consistent place in the formations. But some kind of sail around trying different posts, like Elros who was scoring & feeding Ar Pharazôn last year but has now come back to his original post as a goalie, or Melian who has both tended the goal and led the defences (surprise), Or Curufin and Celegorm who tended to play defence but then required a post in the attack and proved so good last year that they continue as forwards this year; Galadriel I think has been a goalie, a defender and a midfielder, but probably not a forward...

Some of the reasons for their places in the formation are pretty obvious (Fëanor attacks, Melian defends), some I think are "historical" - as to how they fare in one year or kind of "storywise" (depending on what kind of "fellowships" are formed) etc. If you have any specific questions, ask tp.

I steered clear of the 2 Valinor team players, for the fact that I had absolutely no clue what the outcome would be in that match. If I can't convince my head to be moderately sure about an outcome, I stay away...but still...3-0 thumping by FC. Woah, TTN could have never predicted something like that. :rolleyes: I feel lots more "no clue what will happen is only going to get more abundant.

How is it, if we do it like follows...

You phantom throw a dice as to which of the non-starred Rohan defenders I'll get into my team, as surely I picked Felarof not because of it's splendid individual performance or overpowering love for the beast, but just being a Rohan defender.

For to be honest I do have the results already and if I was allowed to pick another Rohan defender myself I theoretically could check if some of them made points or took yellow cards (I checked the post in haste in the morning just to see how the games ended to satiate my curiosity, but didn't actually read them any more closely) and make my choice accordingly. So even if I wouldn't do it, it would sound fair to me if you tp just randomized it, whether I get Snowmane, Shadowfax or Radagast into my team for this round 2. And there would be no second thoughts in anyone's mind whether this was done decently.

Uh-huh. I noticed already during the matches that it was going really bad this round for my team, but now seeing it black on white... I mean, green on black... Well, truth be told, that is how I originally expected the team to fare. Still, now it would be nicer if the team did better.

One thing I should have changed is clear: I should have picked Vána over Estë from the beginning. But, no, it is a question of principle. I want to remain faithful to those I have picked. And one loss such as this does not mean anything. And on top of that, those I thought about leaving behind (Frumgar) actually managed to do something this time, so now I have no reason to leave them behind.

No. I am taking this as an experiment, of how many of my actual favs can make it to the end, and how well can they make it. Though I might still change them for some nice people, like, Ulmo for instance, or somebody. ("people"... :rolleyes: )

There were definitely some people from obviously weak teams, but I never expected all three of Wilderland/Armenelos/Isengard to be eliminated. Heh- yes, that happens. Armenelos had the group-of-death misfortune, Wilderland was an upset, but Imladris was favored to beat out Misty and Isengard, and Valimar was in the worst points position in their group going into the final round.

People just have to decide how risky they want to play. Go for big reward or safety? There were five teams already guaranteed to advance after round 2, and if one chooses to include only one player from those teams then there's definitely the risk of eliminated players. Particularly with the full allowed three players from Isengard which most people (including you) didn't pick to advance. ;)

And Boro- I can't believe no playoff breakdowns! You'd better at least be ready for the quarterfinals, because at some point you must attempt to match your 7 of 8 score prediction from a few years ago. :cool:

I thought Isengard had about 50-50 chance and I was ready to switch the players from there if need be, but I would never have believed Armenelos and Wilderland to fall. They were certainly in the better half of their groups. Come on: Anduin was a loser to start with, Erebor in my opinion mediocre at best, whereas Wilderland had some big stars in. (And that all said already with the knowledge that the "lesser race" had somehow miraculously managed to secure its place in the continuation. Otherwise I would have belived Wilderland to be THE team in the group.) In Armenelos' group, true, these Valinors both seem to be rather overpowered, but I had been thinking Armenelos had, after all, rather decent chances. Misty Mountains and Valimar were nothing special, but by simple statistics, I would not have believed neither of these five teams would qualify... and lo, what happened. But I guess everyone has a great deal to learn ;) (Here I thought that I was making my bunch rather, hmm, varied when it came to the amount of teams I have drawn from. Obviously not at all.)

In fact, I did neither. I went for safety with my picks on who would win and advance etc., but only so that I won't end up totally off when my team, which was (and still is, even in this new shape) rather a "fan team", lost. Which is exactly what happened, in fact. I only thought some could have remained there. I am not picking players based on whom I believe to win, I pick players I like and then want to see how they do. I could make a team full of some Celegorms and Feanors or whatnot, but I won't find any amusement in that. I went a bit further in that direction in my "million dollar team", though apparently still too little. :smokin:

I think the problem is exactly that I did. I never changed a single person in my team until now when nine of eleven turned to be, well, useless. My belief in which teams would win had nothing to do with my choice of players- like I said, I have picked my team the way I had liked it and the picks on who is going to win the way I believed it would turn out, so those are the "real game".
