I sort of copied from whos your favorite bad guy ,but what I'm getting at is what -in your opinion-is the most touching part in the books?-as in touches your heart- I have a whole bunch like,when in ithilien Sam looks at Frodo sleeping and says &quot;I love him.He's like that and sometimes it shines through,somehow.But I love him whether or no,or the one part where Gollum comes back and finds them sleeping and he almost turns good and then the argument that follows afterward &quot;where have you been Gollum&quot;?&quot;sneaking&quot;.&quot;I'm sure we shall gat tired of the word&quot;. I think one of the bests parts in all of ME, is Finrod's dual with Suaron. To me that is perfect, it is very sad yet, it gave me hope for the rest of the book.

It seems fate is not without a sense of irony.</p>

In LotR, I was stirred by the scene where Sam, believing Frodo is dead, has to leave him at Cirith Ungol (why doesn't that look like it's spelled right?). I don't have the book to quote anything directly, but I was very moved by his words in that passage.

I haven't read the Sil in a while, but I remember being torn apart by the stories of Maedhros and Maglor. Tolkien's style and words throughout these tales were beautiful and haunting.

Hmmm...exciting, funny, beautiful, exhilirating.... touching. I would have to say one of the most touching parts of LotR is the chapter in the Houses of Healing, particularly when Merry is speaking of pipes and Théoden.

However, if I may choose an outside-LoTR moment, the entire Narn, esp. Turin leaving Niniel in his house upon Amon Obel. I think it was Amon Obel. Ack! <img src=tongue.gif ALT=":b">

The last moments of Theoden were also taken to heart. Not knowing that Eowyn lay next to him, Merry's sadness. <img src=frown.gif ALT=":("> Poor Theoden.

In LotR, I'm always touched (besides the parts in the very end of the book) by the scene where Frodo is sitting upon Amon Hen and finally realizes the importance of his mission (I know it's not the usual sobby stuff, but I'm still always touched by it):

I think when beren dies and then Luthien dies in sorrow and sings b4 mandos... i dont mean sad, its really touching how mandos allows luthien and beren to come back into the world and he allows no other

Perhaps either. <img src=wink.gif ALT=";)"> Touching, as in the most meaningful, sad, melancholic if you like. However, now that I come to think of it happy would also fit the picture - a death, then a succession is both sad and happy. Theoden dying and wishing only for Eomer to rule Rohan in his stead, happy for Eomer, tragic for Theoden.

Depends on your perspective. And your view on the meaning of life <img src=biggrin.gif ALT=":D">

When Gandalf came alive! I'd never truly thought him dead - no one does - but I was so happy I was crying.
(My cousin was really mean and took the book away so that she and my sister could both watch my reaction to that. They both want to get back to the wild happiness of that first read - I see why they wanted to watch - but I was going mad with suspense...)
When Beren shows his hand - well, lack of hand. That was sooo sad.
When Turin kills Beleg and he's so stunned.
This might sound very minor, but when Strider is upset that they don't trust him. I just love that bit. All of it, but best of all when he says 'But I must admit,' he added with a queer laugh, 'that I hoped you would take me for my own sake. A hunted man sometimes wearies of distrust and longs for friendship. But there, I believe my looks are against me.' And I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, and if by life or death I can save you, I will.

It may sound silly, but seeing Bilbo again at Rivendell. Especially when he offers to carry the Ring. He just wants everything to end up happily ever after. <img src=biggrin.gif ALT=":D">
I also love when Sam looks into the mirror, and also when Sam runs to see Frodo at the Gray Havens and he is so sad cause his master was gonna leave and not even say goodbye. How very very sad.

I thought the last chapter when Frodo departs for the Grey Havens was awfully tragic.
And Theoden's death made me howl.

The life Huan the Hound of Valinor was one of the saddest stories of Ea. I mean he was a under the care of Caranthir? or was it Curifin? I cant remeber which son of Feanor. But he was obediant to him and didn't rebel at all, even when he knew things were wrong. Then he had the whole plite with morgoth/beren/lutien/dog that killed him.(once again i cant remember the name and am too lazy to get my book) He was in my opinion one of the most honorable beings in all of the Tolkien world. He was something great indeed.

Two moments that really moved me were, first of all, Gandalf's reading of the Dwarves' journal in Moria. The final entries in the journal - &quot;We cannot get out&quot;...&quot;The end comes&quot; really stirred me.(Did anyone else notice that when the Fellowship heard the approach of the Orcs, Legolas and Gimli's reaction echoed the words in the journal? &quot;They are coming.&quot; &quot;We cannot get out.&quot;)

The other moment was in Minas Tirith after the Battle of the Pelennor, when an injured and shell-shocked Merry asked Pippin, &quot;Are you going to bury me?&quot; It brought me to tears.

That was the best story in the Sil, I absolutly loved how Luthien risked everything for the man she loved and how Beren died in her arms and how Huroun? gave his life for them and killed that werewolf for the Silmarillion that was sooooo moving.I also think that the part where Sam runs up and finds Shelob standing over his master's body and then the despair comes in,Or that part where on Orodruin he turns to his masters voice and there sees him like he was in the Shire and joy comes and just....man it's hard to say.
I was reading that one part where Aragorn returns to the pellenor fields and the banner waves in the wind sparkling flling their foes with dread and brining hope to the soldier who are defending Gondor, I was like whooaaa toatally awsome.I feel sorry for Pippin the fool of a Took-as Gandalf would say- I mean he started the raid in Moria and then that lead to Gandalf defending them and then that lead to his dying all cause of one small rock HE dropped down a well, poor guy I also think he was the first one captured by the Barrow wight, I mean lookit some of the trouble he gets into and him being a tween and all you know practically running into the wight thinking it was a rock for marking the way out and then BOOM he's knocked senseless, Poor fella

Oh, and I always love the part when the ships with black sails come up the river, and everyone thinks its more of Sauron's forces. The despair is that much more beautiful because you know what it really is, and you have to force yourself not to jump ahead in excitement, to draw it out and enjoy every single word until the banner is unfurled! There are so many parts in the books that moved me.
Off course the tale of Beren and Luthien, Frodo departing, Gandalf reading the book in Moria, and Turin killing Beleg - that one shocks me every time. And the death of Boromir..

Most moving for me was the meeting of Turin and Beleg, after Beleg had been tied to a tree and humiliated by the outlaws. Turin's cry, "Beleg!..." and the Elf's collapse sends a pang down my spine and into my heart. It's worse when Mim gives up the outlaws, and worse again when Turin slays Beleg. Talk about rough.
I also enjoy Beleg's bantering so smartly with Turin about the Lembas in HoME. I love the eloquence of an angry Elf! It is fitting.
Don't get me started on Felagund, that one was traditional and horrible. So was Beren's death, with Huan by his side. I cried like a baby after that one!

I think that the most touching part n the books is at the very end of ROTK. The part where Frodo and Sam say good bye, and then Sam goes back to bag end and says "Well, I'm back". It makes me just about cry every time. I can't wait for the movie. They had better show that part!

Oh, there's so many.. The ending of ROTK made me cry for half an hour... And most of the things concerning Sam.. One of my faves is actually in Appendix B.. The timeline-thing, when it tells that "Samwise passed the Towers, and went to the Grey Havens, and passed over Sea, last of the Ring-bearers." Sam got to see his beloved master Frodo again! *sniff* And a little furhter down on the same page, when it tells about Aragorn's death, and that Merry and Pip are placed next to him, and Gimli goes over the sea together with Legolas.. All very moving, but "The choices of Master Samwise" is the best one... Sometimes I begin crying just by thinking of Sam's courage and love.. *finds box of Kleenex*

Okay, i think that the way Tolkien finished ROTK was the sweetest way that anyone can end a book!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that part! I've read just that a thousand times and cry every time!

I also cried when Gollum almost turned good, then Sam suspected him of sneaking - that was mean of Sam. Sure, he was protecting his master, but STILL!!!

In the top of the tower of Cirith Ungol just after Sam gives the Ring back to Frodo and offers to help bear the burden, Frodo hallucinates Sam as an orc and speaks ferociously. For some weird reason the ride of the Rohirrim when they enter the Pelennor Field and the heroic deeds of Eowyn and Merry - the grief of Eomer and the death of Theoden, always seem to bring a tear to my eye - Im not sure why - but it does. It doesn't make me sad - just the tear. smilies/smile.gif

The whole inredibly sad story of Lúthien& Beren made me cry my eyes out... then, of course Thechoises of master Samwise
and stangly a part of Galadriels mirrorr:
I will diminish, and go into the west and remain Galadriel
I mean, she´s practically saying, her power is gone and she knows it. I find that very touchuing, because Galadriel was so mighty for so long and now she admits her power´s faded.
And finally, a scene that sometimes makes me want to cry because I´m so happy is the Faramir/ Eowyn story. and she looked at him, and her winter faded and she understood. Or at least think that´s the quote... can´t really remeber. Ok, that´s about it.... but I do agree with most of the said stuff.

Well, I know this is late but i just got in last night and i love reading these things. I cried reading alot of the other's moments. Mine are when Sam thinks Frodo is dead after Shelob attacks, when Pippin is smashed under the troll, when Merry returns after fighting the Nazgul, and of course the enind when Frodo leaves. I did cry some in the appendixs when I read of the others deaths and partings.

I was moved by the whole section of TTT in which Frodo and Sam were going through the pass of Cirith Ungol and later when they encountered Shelob (a pity I looked at the end of the book and so knew that Frodo would live...). And, of course, the part where Frodo and Gandalf leave and Sam, Merry and Pippin return to the Shire.

I was also saddened by the last sentence of the trilogy--"well, I'm back"--because then I knew that I had to leave Middle Earth and that it would never be filled with quite as much wonder and emotion as when I first read it. Those three words just seemed so final...

For me it was the departure at the Grey Havens. It was then that I saw the quest completed and all was finished. I just hate finality. I finally had the sense of the fellowship truly breaking and things would never be the same. Even though, that with the exception of Frodo the remaining of the fellowship hung around and still had relationships, you knew that all was coming to a complete end. Also, I personally knew that the book was ending and I was finally having to leave such a fantastic place as M.E and come back to reality.

But you know what they say... I good things must come to an end....

The last pages of the story of Aragorn and Arwen, where he dies and she suddenly becomes old, and lays herself down to die among the elanor and niphredil of Lorien.

I dunno if someone mentioned it, but I think the saddest part was when Turin fights the dragon (I don't have the Silmarillion with me) and falls. Then his sister/wife thinks he's dead, throws herself in the river, and when he wakes up and finds her gone, he commits suicide. *sniffsniff* Romeo and Juliet deal here...
