Female Warriors

[Burzdol]

I have had questions pop up from my friends about this. Were there any major woman warriors? I said yes, probably. They aren't as talked about as men. I don't think there were as many, so they weren't as talked about, but what about the ones that do feats that can out do mens. They also asked what they did if they did something. This question also popped up in my English calss at scholl. What are your ideas?

Burzdol, I'm assuming you mean female warriors in Tolkien rather than just generally!
In the First Age, The People of Haleth were one of the three houses of men that were elf-friends. (The others were the house of Beor and the house of Hador). Haleth was a tough cookie, she led her people in battle and elsewhere, and other women of that house also bore arms.
I also think Beren's mother, Emeldir the Man-Hearted, may have done some fighting.
In the notorious Females in the Fellowship thread, one of our scholars mentioned that in some versions Tolkien had Idril Celebrindal, daughter of Turgon, bearing arms during the fall of Gondolin.
And Galadriel has pointed out, there is of course Eowyn. I don't know about Yavanna, I'd never heard that but maybe others can elaborate.

I don't know if your friends are very into Tolkien, but in Lotr you have Eowin and Arwen. And let's not forget Galadriel. You don't want to be facing the wrong side of them.

Yeh, there were those fighters and also the druedain had their women fihgt too. The dwarf women only did at great need, and i dunno about the others.

I don't know about Yavanna, I'd never heard that but maybe others can elaborate.

Quite possibly she and the other female Valar fought in the two battles fought between the Valar and Melkor: the War of Powers and the War of Wrath. I can certainly see Varda fighting amongst the host of the Valar.

There were many women who were warriors, but they were never as praised as men.... see the fellowship, for example,they were all men. But you can't forget that when Tolkien wrote LotR, women didn't do so much in terms of war....... What I mean is that were not so recognized as they should have been.

I think women in ME could have been warriors, or knew how, but they prefered to do other things.... Luthien, Galadriel, and somany others did great things without handling the sword or the bow..
