After Gandalf's death in FotR all anyone ever talks about is how "Gandalf would not have chosen this way." So I was wondering what everyone thinks on that subject. Which way would Gandalf have sent Frodo and Sam? What do you think he would have done differently? Was there even another option from the way Frodo and Sam take? (aside from their little detour to the Black Gate thanks to Gollum smilies/evil.gif )

I suspect even Gandalf did not have a clue. Did he not talk about things working out somehow, from beyond his own reach?

Put simply, I'll deal with that problem when we get there!

Ahh! Another What if topic! Oh well. Everything would have been different. I suspect that they would have gone to Lothlorien and then travelled down the Anduin on boats. He would have simply told Boromir to either go home or go the rest of the way with the fellowship. When the orcs attacked, Gandalf would have been able to save them, even if it ment hidding in trees again. From there, they would have, um, called the egals to drop them off inside mordor and then proceeded to mount doom.

Well, perhaps I should go back and read it again but I don't think it is that big of a deal. Just look at the quest as a whole, Gandalf himself did not even know which way except for South from Imladris.

As far as the rest of the journey goes - Gandalf 'the Gray' would have been knocked off by Saruman, let alone make it to Gondor.
