Sauron. A malevolent eye is an awesome idea for a villian. That his evil increases the power of the others' evil is an added chill factor. Add to that his ability to tempt and fascinate with the ring. He gets my vote.

I had a feeling everyone would go for Sauron. I mean he is the chief villan. smilies/rolleyes.gif

Not I!!! I think Shelob gets that one!! I absolutely hate spiders.... Sauron is only in a very close second to the giant spider.

I vote for "h", the other category. If you're talking about villains in all of Tolkien's writings, it has to be Melkor/Morgath. I mean he is one of the Valar, while Sauron is a mere maia. He may be in the void now, but isn't he supposed to get out of there near the end of the world. (not a pleasant thought!) sharon, the 7th age hobbit

Sauron is bad is the most evil, but we actually never really see him, he does not seem as scary somehow.

Saruman is a wizard gone evil, but not so scary.

Shelob is scary and evil.

Gollum is so far gone, and so small, I can not say he is the worst.

Smaug just a dragon, not especially evil, but still scary.

Balrog scary, evil (spawn of Melkor)

The S-Bs are only scary if you are a baggins

other: Melkor would definatly win for evil.

other: ring wraiths, I think that they are the most scary, but not as evil

great topic Rose!

I find the Ringwraiths to be the scariest and most menacing, with Shelob coming in at a close second.
I guess Sauron is scary too, but he seems to have to send out others to do his dirty work! He's just a wimp! Ouch! Sorry!

Definately h)Other: The Ringwraiths. Though I absolutely loathe and abhor all spiders, the undead kinda make you forget all that. Plus they're so...freaky...

KingCarlton
04-18-2002, 12:45 AM
Err..Sauron made and ruled the Nazgul like his puppets, without him they're just aimless wraiths.

The Other...people like Feeny(sp) and Grisnankh(sp) who would sell even their own mothers for a paltry sum.

At least Morgoth and Sauron are in your face kind of pure evil and are proud of it, unlike the two-faced kinds that stab one in the back.

The Ringwraiths definitely terrify me.
I hear their theme on the cd, and fear rushes through me. Their presence seems to me like pure fear.
They kinda remind me of the ghost thingy on "Urban Legends."

Hmm, good question. I would probably say none of the above. I know I'm not like other people (which you'll find out when you've read this), but who's the scariest, will most probably be Shelob (or her mother) or Morgoth. Here's the reason(s):

Sauron = Nah, too cute smilies/wink.gif

Saruman = just another mad wizard.

Shelob = Getting close, I absolutely HATE
spiders.

Gollum = Nah, too cute.

Smaug = DRAGONS ARE CUTE NOT EVIL!!!!

Balrog = Nice doggy. SIT!

The S-Bs = Lobelia? (shivers)

other:

Ringwraiths = Too sweet.

Morgoth/Melkor = Too cute, though even I
must say a bit scary.

The S-Bs = Lobelia? (shivers) LOL!
Ya I um.. have not read the Sil yet so that's why I only have Hobbit and LotR villans. And I totally forgot about the ringwraiths. They are definetly very scary.

most scary, evil and menicing

Shelob. I feel sure I would freeze in sheer terror if I saw her coming at me.

h.) other: Morgoth/Melkor and Ungoliant. Although, I admit Shelob is horrid, Ungoliant is Shelob's mother. Imagine the spider that could give birth to creatures such as Shelob? Personally, I felt more sorry for Shelob having been born into that personality, but Ungoliant most likely had the choice to go for good or evil, and chose Morgoth's side: the side of evil.

But, if we are talking of LotR, then I would have to say Sauron, him being the chief servant of Morgoth even in the 1st and 2nd Ages. He kept coming back and fighting on the side of evil, even when they thought he was suppressed.

Ditto! I think the same ^^ Even though my little sweet Smaugy is cool, he wasn't the most frightning..SMAUGY ROCKS! Ok I better keep my mouth shut..**about to go crazy on Smaug..again..**

Sauron doesn't really do anything himself in LotR. Don't know about the other books, though. The local bookstore fails to realize that The Sil is actually a book! smilies/mad.gif

Shelob. I feel sure I would freeze in sheer terror if I saw her coming at me.

I agree... She just inspires me with this overwhelming feeling of "Make it go away! Make it go away!!" that I just don't get from, say, Saruman. Lobelia maybe. smilies/evil.gif

Well, its complicated. Sauron is defintetly very evil and scary, but more in a 'back-of-your-mind" sort of way. Saruman is more despicable, less scary. Shelob is one of those more in-your-face scary, she scared the heck outta me while reading, Gollum is just pitiable, gross, and creepy, the Balrog is terrifying, the S-Bs are just annoying (why are they even mentioned as evil? Lobelia goes nice in the end!) and as other, Melkor/Morgoth and the Nazgul would cut it as scary. They're all scary in their own way (excluding the S-Bs, who I've grown rather fond of), but the Balrog and Shelob would defintiely cut it for me as the 'scariest'.

If your talking about evil i reckon you have to go with the great Father of Dragons Glaurung!! I mean didnt he cast a spell upon Nienor and Turin leading to them marrying!!! Then just before he dies he goes and tells her that Turin is actually his sister!!! Now you dont get much more nasty than that! smilies/evil.gif

The barlog is the thing that freaks me out the most. I mean seriously, considering the thing was made by Melkor/Morgoth himself and could scare the Shelob away, you know those things have got to be really evil and scary.
That fits the quote from Buffy perfectly, "When scary things get scared you know its got to be bad."

Evilist Villan has to be Shelob. She just scares me and none of the other vilans scare me as much as she does. A gain t spider who wouldn't be scared! smilies/rolleyes.gif I'm just glad she only in the book for a short amount of time. smilies/smile.gif

I have no evil aunties, but I do have an evil ex-uncle... leading me to the point: a "Mr. Shelob" might have been very scary! Spiders of all shapes and sizes still annoy me, especially when they take to 'wandering' around MY room. One word for these things: *SQUISH*

I think a Balrog is he most scary. BTW, who is Melkor? Sauron is a coward. He could fight but he's scared of it.

I think that anything can be scary and evil, it just depends on your point of view and beliefs. Hobbits are freaked out of anything bigger than them (of course lots of other people are too). I would have to say that insects are afraid of us (and Shelob & relatives). If orcs had emotions or thoughts, they would be scared of elves and other warriors. It just goes on and on that who you are shapes your fears.

I would say that golum isthe most scheming of the villians, but the scariest would hae to be the Balrog. His roe in the movie wasn't very big, but the other characters didn't know what he was, he is an ancient evil that goes back into the lore of the worlds, Gandalf, the only one who knows anything about him is scared to go into moria because he is there, but he will travel into mordor with the ring to defeat Sauron smilies/evil.gif

By far Sauron.

If you exclude Morgoth and (maybe) Ungoliant, none of the others can compare to him.

Saruman and the Balrogs a little because they were maiar as Sauron, but Sauron was the most power of them all and his malice was only clouded at the beginning because he was a servant of Morgoth.

I would just like to add that yes, Smaugy is adorable. i would also like to say that i am very surprised that no one has mentioned the Barrow Wights!!! i dont know about anyone else, bt things that i cannot see bother me. to be caught in a cloud of mist and put under a spell by a creepy spirit thingy while he does God knows what to me and- ok, i have a highly over-active imagination, so i'll just shut up, but you get the point. eek! smilies/eek.gif smilies/eek.gif smilies/eek.gif smilies/eek.gif smilies/eek.gif smilies/eek.gif smilies/eek.gif

To me the villainy of Grima Wormtongue is the most despicable in LOTR. Sauron, Saruman, Smaug (whom I love) et. al. all have a certain granndeur about them, or a lothsome nastiness like Shelob. But Grima Wormtongue is a pernicious little monster. He destroys Theoden's self-confidence and pollutes the mind of Eowyn, and for what? No great or grand evil cause, just lust, plus perhaps some gold.

Dean Swift wrote- rather unflatteringly of mankind - that they were"The most vicious race of little odious vermin that nature ever suffered to crawl upon the face of the earth."

That is an apt description of Grima.

If you had neighbours like mine, you would say the S-B's.
But, seriously? Morgoth. The very picture of this one guy standing in front of dragons and Balrogs (yay!) and dominating them by the sheer force of his will...

I don't think Glaurung has been mentioned, but he is in the top league of evil beings. May not be the most evil, but he was certainly cunning and knew how to spread mischief and disaster around him. Not only physical, but also destroying minds, e.g. Turin and Niennor, who both had their lives destroyed by this beast.

Greyhame
06-29-2002, 04:20 PM
Morgoth, undoubtedly, is the most evil, frightening, devious, etc. simply because it is he who is responsible for the discord and evil in the first place. Enough said.

However, Sauron is no pansy either, and neither is Saruman. Give that "mad wizard" some credit. I mean, he understood Sauron's black arts better than anyone save Sauron himself. He had the guts to form an "alliance" with the Dark Lord, ready at any time to dissolve that agreement and claim absolute power for himself should the One Ring end up in his possession. He was ready to go against both Sauron and the elves!!! That takes some guts. His fatal flaw, of course, was failure to consider the Ents, but can you blame him? The Ents weren't likely to attack him, that not being their nature. Besides, even when his fortress and army was lost, did he give up? No! He almost destroyed the Shire, homeland of the Ringbearer!!!

Now that's bein relentlessly evil.

I vote for Ungoliant. Creepy, stinky, insatiable, gave birth to other creepy stinky, insatiable things (like the lovely Shelob), and even had Melkor cowering in fear. I mean, if you're scary enough to scare Melkor... smilies/eek.gif That's a whole new level of unimaginable horror right there. Everyone feared Melkor, but Ungoliant must have been a bit more terrible in appearance.

H) The Ringwraiths. They are scary, black shrouds. What's even scarier is that they used to be normal men, like you and me, and they are now just invisible slaves of Sauron with no free will. And if they stabbed you, you'd become just like them.

TheLadyAerowen

h) Other; Ringwraiths
I am voting for the Ringwraiths. I believe they are the most evil/scary villan because, just listen to them, they shriek like banshees (at that part of the movie lotsa a people covered their ears, and screamed smilies/wink.gif ) and look like something off a horror movie. Black cloaks, hissing voices..eek. There is nine of them, and I sure wouldnt want nine of these things coming after me, on horses or on their winged creatures.
