Okay, I got this idea from moving moments. What were some of the funniest things in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings?
I'll start with one, a direct quote from the Hobbit:
He (Bilbo) was feeling very queer indeed in his head by this time after the dreadful adventures of the last three days with next to nothing to eat, and he found himself saying aloud: " Now I know what a piece of bacon feels like when it is suddenly picked out of the pan on a fork and put back on the shelf!"
"No you don't!" he heard Dori answering,"because the bacon knows that it will get back in the pan sooner or later; and it is to be hoped we shan't. Also eagles aren't forks!"
" O no! Not a bit like storks--forks, I mean," said Bilbo sitting up and looking anxiously at the eagle who was perched close by. He wondered what other nonsense he had been saying, and if the eagle would think it rude. You ought not be rude to an eagle, when you are only the size of a hobbit, and are up in his eyrie at night!
" In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit . . . " That's where it all began.</p>

Re: When did you laugh?
I laughed when the fellowshipwas at the gates of Moria. After Gandalf tell them he dosen't know the password. quote: "What are you going to do then?" asked Pippin "Knock on the door with your head, Peregrin Took," said Gandalf "but if dose not shatter them, and i am allowed a little peace from foolish questions, I will seek for the opening words."
I also think the other reprimands Gandalf gives Pipin are funny too. I do, however, feel rather sorry for Pipin. Him being the youngest of the fellowship, trying to prove himself. Being so reprimanded by the leader in front of all must have been hard on him.

Re: When did you laugh?
ah, I like those too..
I had to laugh when the orcs know that the Rohirrim are after them and one of the northerners says
"but what are we going to do at sunrise?"
And Ugluk replies:
"Go on running. What do you think? Sit on the grass and wait for the Whiteskins to join the picnic?"
I always got to laugh about that.
But there are so many amusing parts in those books....
And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom</p>

Ah as eowyn you have reminded me of when Pippen tells Gandalf that he wishes to know everything but the answers to his questions would suffice for then!

Sneaking!
I love Gollum's tirade after Sam accuses him of sneaking.
I was just reading another part that made me laugh out loud...
Saruman refers to the hobbits as rag-tag before he is shut in Orthanc and a little while later Merry says...
'Are we riding far tonight, Gandalf?' asked Merry after a while. 'I don't know how you feel with small rag-tag dangling behind you; but the rag-tag is tired and will be glad to stop dangling and lie down.'

Oh my another, I just got to this part in the book and I laughed out loud! (Getting very strange looks from my father as he watched Entertainment tonight.) Yes, red, Legolas was one of the few who ever managed to score a snappy comeback against Gandalf.
Gandalf's letter to the hobbits in Bree:

When Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas finally meet Merry and Pippin and Gandalf is predicting their invariable doom, then one of the hobbits says, "Gandalf has been saying cheerful things like that all day." It wasn't very funny really, but it made me laugh.

Yeah, I love that whole scene. Also, someone mentioned the rag-tag, but they stopped before my favorite part of it, when Gandalf tells Merry he should feel honored to be in Saruman's thoughts, and Merry says, "I would rather dangle at your feet. For one thing, that gives one a chance to put a question a second time. Are we going far tonight?"

When Frodo is tired of the giving of Bilbo's farewell-presents and all the hobbits (uninvited) searching for Bilbo's 'gold', Otho and Lobelia come and Merry politely answers them: 'Frodo is indisposed' To which Lobelia says: 'Hiding you mean'
And shortly after when the S-B´s finally left again came knocking on the door, and Frodo feels it can wait. Then comes Gandalf's head before the window, saying: 'If you don't let me in Frodo, I shall blow your door right down your hole and out through the hill.'

My little sister is reading though the books and she reminded me of something last night:
"When you are older, you will learn that folk are not always what they seem; and though you may have taken me for a soft stranger-lad and easy prey, let me warn you: I am not, I am a halfling, hard, bold, and wicked!" Pippin pulled such a grim face that the boy stepped back a pace.
This is, of course, Pippin speaking to Bergil.
I laughed mightily trying to think of Pippin as "hard, bold and wicked!"

My favorite funny happens when Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, & Co. arrive at Isengard and find Pippin and Merry lounging after a picnic. Merry (or Pippin?) gets up, nonchalantly walks past the other members of the Fellowship, and welcomes the King of Rohan. Hehehe...then Gimli throws a fit. <img src=biggrin.gif ALT=":D">

G- Sneaking? Sneaking? Hobbits always so polite, yes. O nice hobbits! Smeagol brings them up secret ways that nobody else could find. Tired he is, thirsty he is, yes, thirsty; and they say sneak, sneak. Very nice friends, O yes, my precious, very nice.
S- I'm Sorry, but you startled me out of my sleep. And I shouldn't have been sleeping, and that made me a bit sharp. But where have you been to?
G- Sneaking, said Gollum.
S- I think we shall get tired of that word soon!
Frodo- Hullo Smeagol, found any food, have you had any rest?
G- No food, no rest, nothing for Smeagol. He's a Sneak!

Re: When did you laugh?
A bit late getting to this one, but here goes...
When the Fellowship reached Lorien and encountered the elves in the trees, Legolas and the elves spoke to each other in Elvish. Sam said, "They're elves! I wonder what they're saying." To which Legolas replied, "Yes, they're elves, and they say that you breathe so loud that they could shoot you in the dark."
Also...Gollum (to Frodo): "Where's the other one? The cross, rude hobbit?"
And, finally, Sam (about the "neekerbreekers"): "What do they live on when they can't get hobbit?"

In the Hobbit when they meet the trolls. Bilbo goes burglering, and one of the trolls catches him and asks what he was. Bilbo answered "Bilbo Baggins, a bur--a hobbit" and poor William asks "Whats a burrahobbit got to do with my pocket, anyways? <img src=laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> (by the way, great name, burrahobbit! <img src=rolleyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes"> )

Hm, I was reading through these posts and it seems to be me smilies/rolleyes.gif that always gets laughed at!
Ah, a hobbit can afford to laugh at himself I suppose... smilies/biggrin.gif
All of the latter posts tickle me, but a favourite of mine has to be in Three is Company, where Frodo goes for a walk, returns and Pippin asks him where the water is, and Frodo replies "I don't keep water in my pockets."
Also the song at the Prancing Pony, the Merry Old Inn is funny too http://www.infopop.com/artwork/footer_logotype.gif [/IMG]

I love the part when Sam calls Gollum a sneak.
<blockquote>Quote:<hr> S- Where have you been to-sneaking off and sneaking back, you old villian?
<hr></blockquote>
That's one of my favorites, and I also like it when Gandalf asks Pippin what he'd like to know. <img src=biggrin.gif ALT=" smilies/biggrin.gif"> <img src=laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

That was my favorite part too! The funniest part of the 70's movie too.

Gandalf when Pippin tossed that rock in Moria...
"This is not a walking party! Toss yourself in next time and save us further nuisance!"
I don't feel sorry for Pippin though. He could dish it out, too. (The first morning camping out in the Shire, to a sleepy Sam)
"Sam, it's half past nine! Have you got the bathwater hot?"
"No sir, no I haven't!"

Pippin to Frodo: "But I was hoping to stop at the Green Dragon. They have the best beer in Bywater by all accounts!"
"Well that settles it! Short cuts make long delays but inns make longer ones!"
So they agreed, but Sam not without a wistful regret for the best beer in Bywater. smilies/smile.gif
- something like that.
Oh, and Aragorn to Merry in the houses of the healing:
"If you think I've gone through battle and fire and the paths of the dead to bring one soldier his pack that he carelessly dropped in the middle of a battle, you are mistaken. Send for the herbmaster..."
After Aragorn leaves Pippin informs Merry, "My dear fool, your pack is right there. He saw it the whole time of course." smilies/biggrin.gif

I like this bit after they restore Bagshot Row.
There was some discussion of the name that the new row should be given. Battle Gardens was thought of, or Better Smials. But after a while in sensible hobbit-fashion it was just called New Row. It was a purely Bywater joke to refer to it as Sharkey's End.

I think Tolkien's theory about golf in Bilbo is a good one.

"Good morning!" said Bilbo, and he meant it. The sun was shining, and the grass was very green. But Gandalf looked at him from under long busy eyebrows that stuck out futher than the brim of his shady hat.
"What do you mean?" he said. "Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning weather I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?"
"All of them at once." said Bilbo.

In The Two Towers Chapter 5, when Gimli shouts "Come, come! Since Gandalf's head is now sacred, let us find one that is right to cleave!" Always liked that line.

"And while you've been trapessing in foreign parts, chasing black men up mountains from what my Sam says, though what for he don't make clear, they've been and dug up Bagshot Row and ruined my taters!"
Said by Gaffer Gamgee in The Return of the King.

Surely this did not begin to mine the vein of humour.
The Foreward: " Some who have read the book, or at any rate reviewed it, have found it boring, absurd, or contemptable; and I have no cause to complain, since I have similar opinions of their works, or of the kind of writing that they evidently prefer. "
And the story hadn't even started yet!

When Gimli looks as miserable as Sam Gamgee in a boat. Also Gollum+Sam combination makes me laugh sometimes.

I'm moving this thread, along with its companion "When did you cry", to the Novices and Newcomers forum so that many members can share their experiences there. Enjoy!
The bit when Eomer and Aragorn meet in the midst of battle in the Pelennor Fields made me laugh because it made me think, ok if the foresight here works then maybe everthing will be ok. It was a pleasing moment.

'Eavesdroppping, sir? I don't follow you, begging your pardon. There ain't no eaves at Bag End, and that's a fact'
Yup. :)
What a great bunch of reminders! Good thread!
Sam to Frodo at the Council of Elrond: 'A nice pickle we have landed ourselves in, Mr. Frodo!' A bit of a grim laugher, but still...
Also when Gimli threatens Eomer for his rash words regarding the Lady of the Wood, and all the téte â téte in that regard between them throughout the story.

First time I laughed: "Wake that sluggard Fatty!" Goodness knows why, I just found that absurdly funny.

I laughed incredibly much - for several minutes, and repeatedly - when I have first read in the Hobbit the poem Bilbo uses against the spiders (the second one - Lazy Lob and Crazy Cob, that time however translated into my native language). That was just incredibly hilarious (okay, I was like 8 or 9 at that time, but I remember exactly how I could not stop laughing). It was also the first passage I went to check once I got the books for my own for Christmas later that year - before I've been reading it from a book borrowed in the library, an older edition, and I wanted to check if the poem does still have the same translation. It did. I spent several minutes walking around the appartement and reciting the poem aloud.
There were surely more moments, but this is the most memorable one coming to my mind.
