I hereby issue a challange to all Barrow Downers. This thread is mainly because I got lost in both other riddle threads and finally have something to contribute.

My first challange : What am I?

You grow taller
I shink smaller
I help you see
till your blow stops me

An easy one to begin with and you have probably heard it before.

lathspell
04-13-2002, 12:08 PM
It's an easy one, although i have heard it before in another sort of way.

I guess it's a candle.

greetings.

Starbreeze
04-13-2002, 12:34 PM
Ah yes, well done Lathspell! You got it right!
Here's the next one...

I'm not like most of the feline breed
I always follow, I never lead

This one is not so easy, but still easier than some of the others I have in store!

Oh, and by the way, feel free to post up any of other riddles you may have, just like in the other threads.

Tigerlily Gamgee

Ay me, I feel so lost with all of these riddles. I guess I am not that clever of a Hobbit. It hurts my mind to think.
I will know an answers one of these days, yes I will!

Starbreeze

Aww, Tigerlily, I'm sure you are a very clever hobbit! I mean, I got totally lost with the other riddles threads!

Thats ok Tigerlily.
Birdland, close, you were right about the cat part, but not about the tail. Keep trying! smilies/biggrin.gif

Oh, keep posting Birdland!

I think I'll venture a guess and say a cat's shadow.

Starbreeze
04-14-2002, 10:02 AM
Close there with Cat's shadow. Think more along the lines of no an actual thing or animal, more a name or title given to some one.

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-14-2002, 10:32 AM
I'll go out on a limb here and say... catburglar?

Starbreeze
04-14-2002, 10:37 AM
Almost Tigerlily, you were closer than the others.

Susan Delgado

While we're all pondering Starbreeze's most punnish riddle( smilies/smile.gif), I have a couple easyish ones.

1.
Man walks over,
Man walks under,
In time of war he burns asunder.

2.
I am emeralds and diamonds, lost by the moon,
I am found by the sun and picked up soon.

Susan Delgado
04-14-2002, 05:22 PM
A catapult, maybe?

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-14-2002, 05:25 PM
catalyst? Does it actually have the word "cat" in it?

Luinsewiel

I'm not like most of the feline breed
I always follow, I never lead Could this one be a "scardy-cat"?or "fraidy cat"? hmmm niether of those look like I spelt them right but you know what I mean Man walks over,
Man walks under,
In time of war he burns asunder
A bridge? hey I spelt that one right! I think .... smilies/rolleyes.gif

Susan Delgado
04-14-2002, 05:44 PM
Aye, Luinsewiel, a bridge is the correct answer smilies/smile.gif

I am emeralds and diamonds, lost by the moon,
I am found by the sun and picked up soon.

Shooting stars?

Starbreeze
04-15-2002, 02:19 PM
Nope, none of you are right so far - though who ever said Scardy cat is close. A hint, put the word 'cat' on the end of the answer, not at the beginning. Tell me when you give up! smilies/tongue.gif

Susan Delgado
04-15-2002, 02:40 PM
No, not shooting stars

Bragolandune
04-15-2002, 06:00 PM

Susan Delgado

Tigerlily Gamgee

Hey! Copy cat is right! Yey!

Here is the next one:

You write it more than others do
But friends will say it more than you.

What is it?

This one is easy (I think anyway) smilies/biggrin.gif

Luinsewiel
04-16-2002, 01:50 PM
Wow that took a whole 20mins! Longer than I tought smilies/rolleyes.gif yes it is paintif you hadn't already guessed. Hey I got it from a cartoon what do you expect? smilies/wink.gif

Starbreeze is that "your name"?

How about this one

With no wings, I fly.
With no eyes, I see.
With no arms, I climb.
More frightning than any beast,
Stronger than any foe.
I am cunning, ruthless, and tall;
In the end, I rule all.

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-16-2002, 05:42 PM
Susan - is the answer "fate"?

Susan Delgado
04-16-2002, 06:56 PM
Well, it isn't the answer I was given when asked this riddle, but that is a very good answer!

Susan, is it destiny? or perhaps the imagination?

Susan Delgado

The answer I was given was imagination, but I like you guys's "fate" and "destiny" better smilies/smile.gif

Susan Delgado

Here's a silly one you've probably heard before:

Snow White and the Dwarves sit down for a meal. How fast does she serve them the next course?

And another easy one:

Walk on the living, they don't even mumble;
Walk on the dead, they mutter and grumble.

Susan Delgado
04-17-2002, 02:19 PM
Leaves!!! heehee

Starbreeze
04-17-2002, 02:27 PM
Yep, it is "your name" that was fast! Ok, here is another one:

Lots of offspring, many wifes,
four legs, nine lives

A very easy one!

As to the others, I have no idea, I can make them up but not solve them!

Susan Delgado
04-17-2002, 02:36 PM
A kitty cat! smilies/smile.gif

Starbreeze
04-17-2002, 02:42 PM
Yep! That took all of 11 minutes! Wow, you are fast! Ok, another one

To eat my cheese you'd best be fast
if not this meal will your last

Another easy one.

Nuranar
04-17-2002, 03:08 PM
A mouse (or rat) trap!

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-17-2002, 10:07 PM
What about the Snow White one?
I say, how can we know what she served them NEXT when she hasn't served them anything to begin with! smilies/smile.gif
OK, I don't think that's an answer, just a statement.

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 09:42 AM
Don't worry, Princess Tigerlily, there is definitely an answer smilies/smile.gif

Lady_Báin
04-18-2002, 10:17 AM
I'm going to take a wild susan 7 minutes?? smilies/rolleyes.gif smilies/tongue.gif

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 11:47 AM
Very close, but not quite it

Starbreeze
04-18-2002, 01:36 PM
Yep, It is a mouse or rat trap.
Hmm, for the Snow white one, could it be that she didn't, as she sat down with them? Just a guess.

Here is another:

I make a phone sing,
I'm known as a ding,
I fit round a finger,
A bell makes me linger.

There, easy by the third clue, but ME related and good.

[ April 18, 2002: Message edited by: Starbreeze ]

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 01:52 PM
No, she did. It is not a trick question.

I will hazard....a ring? smilies/smile.gif

Starbreeze
04-18-2002, 02:00 PM
Yep, a ring.

Hmm, *thinks* She served them the next course when they had finished the first one? Is it simple like that?

Starbreeze
04-18-2002, 02:05 PM
Wow, you are good at this Susan. Here is another one, see if you can take a bit longer and let others have a turn though Susan! Lol smilies/biggrin.gif

Pushed around everyday
I get revenge in my special way
Not by throwing a hefty punch,
But by running away
with your groceries and lunch

This one is funny, and not ME related.

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 02:09 PM
Well, it's not quite that. It's a translation from Italian and "next course" is not quite right. Maybe try "the next food they ate"

Oh, Oh, I can answer that one!! But I won't.... smilies/smile.gif

Starbreeze
04-18-2002, 02:26 PM
Susan - can you tell me how you are so good at this? You've taken all my best ones and ripped them to shreds in seconds! Are you like "riddle genius" or something, or are you secretly Gollum and Bilbo in one? smilies/biggrin.gif

That altered translation might help - do you want the actual food? Can I guess pudding and be wrong? smilies/biggrin.gif

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 02:30 PM
I don't know...maybe it's just the way my mind works. I can "think around corners", as it was phrased in a book I read recently, or something. I dunno....*shrugs*

No, it's not a type of food, it's the actual amount of time it took her to do it.
mmm, pudding smilies/smile.gif

Unfortunate that no one else is around to answer yours....

[ April 18, 2002: Message edited by: Susan Delgado ]

Starbreeze
04-18-2002, 02:35 PM
LoL, well, you are lucky anyway.
Hmm, then could it be that she served them it straight away as they only sat down to it, then she had to serve it to them before they ate it?
I am determined to solve this!

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 02:38 PM
Ah, well...I do enjoy it

No, it's not "immediately". Would you like a hintlet? smilies/smile.gif

Starbreeze
04-18-2002, 02:46 PM
Yes please! smilies/biggrin.gif

Starbreeze
04-18-2002, 02:48 PM

Susan Delgado

Ok, Lady Bain's answer up there (7 minutes) was very close.

Elenya
04-18-2002, 03:30 PM
Hey Starbreeze: Is the answer to your riddle a grocery cart?

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-18-2002, 04:47 PM
Shoot! I need to get to these sooner - I have known the answers to your last three or so, Starbreeze, but I keep getting beat to the punch!
Ah.... Susan, Susan....
A princess am I? Thanks, I don't know when I received that title.
I am still thinking about the Snow White one, perhaps a bolt of genius will strike me before I sign back on later tonight.
*sigh*

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 05:01 PM
It's from Peter Pan. From the people who lived around the lagoon. I don't remember the name of the people or of the lagoon, but Peter Pan once rescued Princess Tigerlily from Capt Hook and was friends foreverafter with the people.

Honestly, I thought this was a very well known riddle....

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-18-2002, 05:06 PM
Oh yes! I remember that character now!
It's been a while since I have seen any version of Peter Pan!

Also, I have heard this riddle before, I just don't think I ever heard the answer.

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 05:14 PM
Ahhh. Well, I don't know what to tell you...so far Lady Bain has been closest

Bragolandune
04-18-2002, 08:44 PM
susan, is it 8 minutes?

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 10:32 PM
No, it's not eight minutes. I'll say it again with a better, (but slightly wordier) translation

Snow White sits down and serves the dwarves a meal. How fast does she serve the next food they eat?

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-18-2002, 10:52 PM
Worded that way it sounds as though it means how long till their next meal...
hmmm... but I am probably wrong...
With that interpretation it would be about 8 hours...
BUT.
My friend came up with this answer - they never get to the next course because Sleepy falls asleep during the first.

Anyway, that was his answer - I think that I am missing some wordplay within the riddle, or something.

Susan Delgado
04-18-2002, 11:25 PM
No, it's still the same meal, and as far as I know, no one fell asleep smilies/smile.gif
Well, the answer is slightly punnish...

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-18-2002, 11:47 PM
I hate to say it, but I think I give up smilies/frown.gif
Here is a riddle I found, I thought I should try to contribute a little here:

Here on earth it is true, yesterday is always before today; but there is a place where yesterday always follows today. Where?

Susan Delgado
04-19-2002, 12:12 AM
I'm sorry smilies/frown.gif
How do the rest of you feel? If I get more negatives, I'll post the answer tommorrow evening. In the meantime, I'll give one more hint, which may or may not help: what she's serving them is the next helping of the same course.

Is yours a dream, Tigerlily?

Bragolandune
04-19-2002, 01:51 PM
i give up too, susan..ill probably kick myself when u tell us the answer though.

Tigerlily, is the answer to yours a dictionary?

Starbreeze
04-19-2002, 02:10 PM
Yep, a grocery cart, or shopping trolley for UK citizens.
I'm sorry Susan, I'm afraid this is my last guess, if it isn't right I give up totally - I will say randomly 10 minutes. Don't know why and I know it is wrong, but I don't give up without a fight! smilies/biggrin.gif

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-19-2002, 10:56 PM
Yes, Bragolandune, the answer is a dictionary! smilies/smile.gif

Susan Delgado
04-20-2002, 12:24 AM
*Slaps forehead with heel of hand* A dictionary! Of course! Talk about reading too much into it...

All right, I'll tell. I had no idea it would be so challenging.

The answer is: seven seconds

Starbreeze
04-20-2002, 06:03 AM
Could you give us an explanation Susan, now you've baffled us all into Mordor lol smilies/biggrin.gif

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-20-2002, 11:48 AM
Yes, please explain it to me... my little Hobbit brain is not understanding smilies/frown.gif

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-20-2002, 11:49 AM
Oh wait!!!
Does it have to do with the fact that there are "seven" dwarves & it is the "second" part of the meal?

Susan Delgado
04-20-2002, 11:53 AM
You got it, Tigerlily. There are seven of them and she's serving them seconds smilies/smile.gif

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-20-2002, 11:56 AM
Woo-hoo
Too bad my mind didn't work that way while trying to solve it!

Susan Delgado
04-20-2002, 12:13 PM
ok, I have another one.

Why is a raven like a writing desk? no, wait, that won't do.... smilies/smile.gif

Round as a saucer and deep as a cup.
All the King's horses couldn't pull it up.

Starbreeze
04-20-2002, 12:17 PM
Gah! Stupid Starbreeze *hits head on wall repeatedly* Oh well, here is another riddle:

I'm a dwarf among plants.
I am a mountain to ants,
I'm not green like leaves
I'm a target for theives

What am I?

This is kinda ME related, but only just.

Susan Delgado

It came from Alice in Wonderland

i, too, had read this many, many years ago in the lewis carrol book and have asked many people what they thought the answer was.

here's my answer:
why is a raven like a writing desk?

because they both have inky feathers

Ahhh yes, an umbrella.
I wasn't thinking along the lines of things not usually associated with fireplaces. Oh well, at least I've gotten one right smilies/rolleyes.gif

Tigerlily Gamgee
04-30-2002, 09:21 AM
OK, I have a couple new ones... I put more than one because they are easy:

"What is dark but made out of light?"

"The Moon is my father,
the Sea is my mother;
I have a million brothers,
I die when I reach land."

piosenniel

Tigerlily Gamgee

Yes and yes!

I'm running out of riddles, I am looking on the internet for some now. Ya know, there aren't many riddle sites out there.
I think I shall start creating my own smilies/smile.gif

Probably just as well, I can't solve them to save my life!

"Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and good with ketchup."

That's from Dealing with Dragons, isn't it? I haven't read it, but I have a friend who used to say that all the time.

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-01-2002, 12:57 PM
OK, I have a new one...

"I cannot fly, yet I have wings.
I can make you laugh, cry, or even sing.
Sometimes I am clothed and other times naked.
My purpose is to let your senses awaken."

and another...

"I am tall, short, fat, thin;
I may keep you out
Or I may keep you in."

I made both of these up, so hopefully they are not too terrible smilies/eek.gif

Starbreeze
05-01-2002, 01:09 PM
Tigerlily, is the second one a keyhole?

I have one that I made up.

First is last
And last is first
Start is end
And end is start.

Bragolandune

I'm not really sure where this quote came from, i found it through a quotes website. Thanks for the compliments on it though smilies/smile.gif

Tigerlily, is the first one an imagination? or maybe a dream?

Susan Delgado
05-01-2002, 04:43 PM
Is the first emotion, Tigerlily?
I agree with Starbreeze about the second maybe being a keyhole. That, or a door.

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-01-2002, 06:39 PM
Starbreeze and Susan... the answer I have is not a keyhole, but that also works very well. You are on the right track smilies/smile.gif

Bragolandune... the first one is neither. It is an actualy physical object. Those are both good answers, though.

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-01-2002, 06:40 PM

I have a rather corny riddle that I made up myself:

What is there, but then is not
Is always chased but can't be caught
Born of wind and water used for cleaning
Holds a rainbow, though not raining.

Starbreeze

It's not a keyhole? Oh, don't know then, I'm really not very good at this.

Bragolandune

Tigerlily, my mom thinks the answer to your first one is an entertainer..is she on the right track?

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-02-2002, 09:40 PM
Bragolandune - you are the closest. The answer is not alive, but can be brought to life (if you get what I mean).

piosenniel - you are very close with gate.

Starbreeze, you are good. You've gotten more right than I have.

Also, to keep a fish from smelling you hold its nose!

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-02-2002, 09:41 PM
Frodo, is the answer to yours a wave?

Tigerlily Gamgee

OK, a hint....
"I cannot fly, yet I have wings.
I can make you laugh, cry, or even sing.
Sometimes I am clothed and other times naked.
My purpose is to let your senses awaken."

Well, it is a physical object, as I have said earlier, I think. Ummm... if I give too good of a hint I will give it away. Let's say that it is usually very large, but it can also be very small, depending on where it is. Geez, now I am talking in riddles.
If no one gets it soon I will give a big hint! smilies/smile.gif

I run smoother than any rhyme;
I love to fall but cannot climb;
I tremble at each breath of air,
Yet can the heaviest burdens bear.

I'm glad you're in theater too; what do you do? Act? I'm a carpenter, myself. I build the sets and whatnot, but I guess I already said that. Are you doing a show right now? We're doing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It's such a blast; I love it.

this really dosen't count as a riddle but i found it in a book.

I'm hunger. I'm thirst. Where i bite, i hold til i die, and after death they must cut my mouthful out of my enemy's body and bury it with me. I can fast a hundred years and not die. I can lie a hundred nights on ice and not freeze. I can drink a river of blood and not burst. Show me your enemies.

I'll have to agree with Lady_Báin about the answer being water, I cannot think of anything better.

Lady_Báin, is the answer to yours a type of weapon???

Susan, I am an actress, though I started out being an artistic designer for sets (which it looks like I may be getting to do this again this summer, Yay!). I am going to be in a show called Simply Vaudeville this summer at a living history museum in MI. I am not done with school yet, so I am not ready to get an agent yet, or anything like that. But it's great fun no matter what you do in theatre!!!!!

No I didn't cheat! I've read the book and seen the movie tons of times so I just remembered it. I was very happy to see a riddle I actually knew the answer to smilies/smile.gif

Here's one, if anyone's interested:

Riddle me, riddle me rot-tot-tote!
A wee little man in a red red coat!
A staff in his hand, and a stone in his throat;
If you'll tell me this riddle, I'll give you a groat.

Cheesy I know, but I didn't make it up! smilies/smile.gif

Susan Delgado
05-09-2002, 04:05 PM
Water it is
The answer to Niere's is probably not Santa....

Here's one that's a little different

My first is in window, but not in pane.
My second's in road, but not in lane.
My third is in oval, but not in round.
My fourth is in hearing, but not in sound.
My whole is known as a sign of peace,
And always wins quick release.

Tigerlily, I tried acting when I was younger and didn't like it; I'm not outgoing enough. But a couple years ago I got into Stagecraft and I really liked it. I don't know if it's something I want to do as a career, but I certainly enjoy it and will keep at it, at least as a hobby.

A cherry??? smilies/smile.gif

Susan Delgado
05-12-2002, 03:11 AM
Okey dokey. I'll give a couple because they're easier than other riddles.

1.
My first is in bottle but isn't in milk.
My second's in satin and not in silk.
My third and fourth are both in a pair.
My fifth is in hope and also despair.
My last is in yellow but isn't in pink.
My whole contains liquid for people to drink.

2.
My first is in dog but isn't in cat.
My second's in glove but not in hat.
My third is in flame but not in smoke.
My fourth is in jester but not in joke.
My whole makes no fuss about what it will eat,
And is known to be nimble on its four feet.

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-12-2002, 09:48 AM
These riddles confuse me.
The first one makes me think of a bottle of Moutain Dew smilies/eek.gif
The second one sounds like a cat, based by the last two lines.

Niere-Teleliniel
05-12-2002, 11:59 AM
I made that too easy Tigerlilly! Yeah, it's a cherry.

My first is in dog but isn't in cat.
My second's in glove but not in hat.
My third is in flame but not in smoke.
My fourth is in jester but not in joke.
My whole makes no fuss about what it will eat,
And is known to be nimble on its four feet.

A goat perhaps?

Both right, Niere! smilies/biggrin.gif Do you like that kind?

Niere-Teleliniel
05-12-2002, 06:56 PM
Yes, but it can take me a while. The barrel one gave me fits! Here's a few for ya'll!

1. "The beginning of eternity
The end of time and space
The beginning of every end,
And the end of every place."

2. "I never was, am always to be,
No one ever saw me, nor ever will
And yet I am the confidence of all
To live and breathe on this terrestrial ball."

3."There was a green house.
Inside the green house there was a white house
Inside the white house there was a red house.
Inside the red house there were lots of babies."

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-12-2002, 07:44 PM
These two have been posted before (by me, actually, so I know the answers smilies/smile.gif )
The beginning of eternity
The end of time and space
The beginning of every end,
And the end of every place."
There was a green house.
Inside the green house there was a white house
Inside the white house there was a red house.
Inside the red house there were lots of babies
The first one is the letter "E" and the second one is a watermelon.
As for the second one you listed, is the answer "tomorrow"???

Niere-Teleliniel
05-13-2002, 08:15 AM
Okay, I wondered about that when I posted, but I was too lazy to back and read thru the thread! smilies/smile.gif Yes, the answer is tomorrow! Perhaps I should just stick to answering...

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-13-2002, 12:22 PM
No no! You can keep posting riddles. I understand not wanting to go back through all of them. Besides, I wouldn't have known them if I hadn't been the one who posted them smilies/smile.gif
I have decided to start making up my own riddles, though my head has been spinning lately so I don't have any new ones yet.

Susan Delgado
05-13-2002, 10:10 PM
1.
I move silently without wings,
between silvery, silken strings,
And there, in the grass,
You'll see me as you pass.

2.
Two bodies have I, both joined in one.
The more still I stand, the quicker I RUN>

And one more of these, just for kicks smilies/smile.gif

3.
My first in in wood, but isn't in tree.
My second's in four and also in three.
My third is in music and also in tune.
My fourth is in May but never in June.
My whole makes a sound you can hear down the street.

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-14-2002, 02:30 PM

Five hundred begins it,

Most are Liers,
Most are Boneheads,
Most are Jerks,
Yet still respected.

This one is kind of funny.

Piosenniel, I have to admit that wasn't what I had in mind, but I guess it fits smilies/wink.gif

Tigerlily, you got it right. If you had said polititions that also would have been correct.

Wow, it really was lawyers! That's funny!

I was just wondering how many riddlers are still out there...??? I haven't seen many of the regulars anymore & this thread seems to be dying. That's sad, because I really enjoy it.
Are you guys still out there???

Here's a riddle...
What black and green with obsession all over?

Anyone, anyone??
Wow, I am sounding crazy now. smilies/tongue.gif

OK, I know I haven't been on this thread for more than a month, but my son thought up a good riddle and wanted me to post it, so I decided to take the turn I never took when I "won".

What's loud, but doesn't make a sound?
What's bright but emits no light?
What's soft, but has no texture?

Tell him I'm sorry. I think that one just clicked with me right away because of all of the art classes I have taken.

I'm still around....I'm running out of riddles though smilies/smile.gif

His costume is slendid, all golden and red,
And he wears a red flower on top of his head.
You can see he's the boss here,
For one and all come when they hear his call.

I don't know about yours, Tigerlily....a woman with no fasion sense?? smilies/smile.gif

ooh first time im posting a riddle..well here goes:

Pronounced as one letter,
And written with three,
Two letters there are,
And two only in me.
I'm double, I'm single,
I'm black, blue and grey,
I'm read from both ends,
And the same either way.

Is it a rooster?

I don't know about yours, Tigerlily....a woman with no fasion sense??
Were you reffering to the "What's black and green with obsession all over?"
If so, then no. That was just my little fun play about the Barrow Downs (though I guess there is yellow in there as well smilies/smile.gif )

Also, it's kinda fun to make up riddles. Heck, the past few of mine have been made up on the spot about objects I see around me. It's kinda fun, though they are not as good as other riddles & they may not rhyme smilies/biggrin.gif

Born at the same time as the world,
destined to live as long as the world,
and yet never five weeks old.
What is it?

well im glad you liked it susan smilies/smile.gif its not mine though, i found a great website with a whole bunch on it..so heres another one for you:

I am something people count on,
But I'm not your fingers or toes.
I am the comfort in your heart,
When your mind's not sure it knows.
People often call me blind,
For I have no eyes to see.
Several times I have been lost,
But I cannot be given away.
What am I?

Bragolandune - I know this is a simple sounding answer, but is it "LOVE"?

PS - I agree with Gandalf's answer of a month. I can't think of anything else.

I also can't think of better answers than "love" and "month"
