O and BTW due to other threads where not too many ppl got to post, you can post any riddle any time and well try to solve it, just give it a tag please

Samwise
03-19-2002, 06:24 PM
Okay...but what do you mean by a "tag"?
Suddenly a low voice murmured:
"Gil-Galad was an elven-king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of Heaven's feild
were mirrored in his silver shield..

But long ago he rode away
and where he dwelleth none can say
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are. "

The others turned in amazement, for the voice was Sam's.

A Riddle Moved (per request of Alchrivëwen)
Okay, I never got to really try on the other thread, so...
All over the Barrowdowns me you'll find
some people think I'm not very kind
but if you don't to avoid me take heed;
I'll be sure and ruin a good read!

Yeah, easy...but it was the first thing to pop into my head.

Hmmmm....Is it a mediator? I don't know

Samwise
03-19-2002, 09:15 PM
Way to go, Galdor! See, told you it was simple! smilies/wink.gif
"That's all I know." stammered Sam, blushing. "I learned it from Mr. Bilbo when I was a lad. "

Yet another easy one from Samwise
Round on the outside
Round in the center
If you pass through me
Someplace warm and cozy you may enter.
Hopefully soon I'll be able to think of something hard... smilies/rolleyes.gif
"Elves! " exclaimed Sam. "Elves, sir!" He would have burst out of the trees and dashed off, if they had not pulled him back.

How are you enjoying the snow on the first day of spring? (I live in Port Orchard)

Marileangorifurnimaluim
03-21-2002, 02:33 AM
No kidding! At least if it's going to snow, some of it could stay on the ground and give me a day off.

This one's not impressive, but it's late *yawn*:

This nag rides the night
Silent with fright
But all who are near
Know nothing to fear.

I don't think I will ever forgive nature for this! smilies/mad.gif 25cm of snow on the first day of spring.Like my sister said this morning"it's winter time" she went on to say it was every other season(shes only three)but still, it's supposed to be warm!! School was closed every where else but here it's march break! A perfectly good storm wasted. and I had to get up early and go grocery shoping before the roads got to bad smilies/mad.gif I am really bad at riddles and all things that require(sp?)thinking in general but someone think up a real easy one and I'll see what I can do.

Sorry I made you wait. If I don't post a new one fast enough I don't mind if someone else takes a turn. (usually either my server has crashed or my Mother-in-law has come over, the latter being the worst nightmare)

Greenbow, could yours be a rainbow?

Here's one for guessing Maril's

Only one color, but not one size,
stuck at the bottom yet easily flies.
Present in sun but not in rain,
doing no harm and feeling no pain.

Though precious it looks, a shiny stone,
IT IS GOLD COLOURED LIKE A PRECIOUS STONE.
it was not born in the earth.
BEING A FISH, BORN IN WATER.
It speaks all day, but no sound is heard,
STUPID THING OPENS AND CLOSES ITS MOUTH ALL DAY.
and no matter how far it goes, it will always end up in the same place

Ok, I'm not sure if this counts as a riddle but I don't like be left out so I'm using it anyway.

You have fifteen sheep in a field, all grazing happily. Then some Sackville-Baggins comes along and steals all but 9 of them.
How many sheep do you have left?

This is really easy, but I'm silly and can't think of anymore - especially not as good as yours. smilies/frown.gif

Samwise - That is a wonderful riddle. I was going to guess a church building but since two of the LOTR characters didn't avoid it, that's probably not the answer (well, were there any churches in ME?) Clue #3: The answer has to do with some events that happened after ROTK ends....at least, I don't think think they happen 'til after ROTK ends...and I'm not going to spoil it and look, 'cause I'm only barely done with FOTR.
"There must have been a mighty crowd of dwarves here at one time," said Sam; "and every one of them busier than badgers for five hundred years to make al this, and most in hard rock, too! What did they do it all for? They didn't live in these darksome holes, surely? "

Well, I'm never gonna get Samwise's riddle, so maybe it's time we had another .

What force and strength cannot get through
I with a gentle touch can do.
And many in the street would stand
were I not a friend at hand.

Stacey:LOL, Rae....I believe the term is "split personality".

Sam: Split? *looks at her* Miss Stacey, y' look 's whole 's anything to me..."

Stacey: *Well, at least he's a cute little thing...* smilies/rolleyes.gif *I've got to be nice to him, too, 'cause we just read the part where he lost Bill and he got all weepy....* smilies/frown.gif
Sam, clinging to Frodo's arm, collapsed on a step in the black darkness. "Poor old Bill!" he said in a choking voice, "Poor old Bill! Wolves and snakes! But the snakes were too much for him. I had to choose, Mr. Frodo. I had to come with you."

You're reading the Trilogy for the first time?

Samwise
03-30-2002, 09:13 PM
Oh, well. I'll tell you folks on Monday.
Sam stood sullenly by the pony and returned no answer. Bill, seeming to understand well what was going on, nuzzled up to him, putting his nose to Sam's ear. Sam burst into tears, and fumbled with the straps, unloading all the pony's packs and throwing them on the ground.

No, Rae, the second. The first time I read it, though, was roughly 19 years ago, and I'm finding I remember VERY little. smilies/smile.gif
At that moment from far off the wind bore to thier ears the howling of wolves. Bill the pony started in fear, and Sam sprang to his side and whispered softly to him.

We must be close to the same age. The first time I read it was 22 years ago.

LOL! Actually, as I read, I've written them down, and I have a file full of them. Your post led me to dig up that one. You can kind of tell how far I am in the book from my latest quote.
"But you can't leave poor old Bill behind in this forsaken place, Mr. Gandalf!" cried Sam, angry and distressed. "I won't have it, and that's flat. After he has come so far and all! "
Well, I take that back. They're sort of mixed up, and some are off this board from places I haven't read to yet. Okay, scratch that.

Samwise
03-30-2002, 09:41 PM
.....and actually, I don't think I've ever used a highlighter in my Bible--at least, not my newer one. My thing is to mark little notes in the margins everywhere.
"Well, I'm back."

Raefindel, is the answer to yours a key?

Samwise, I was almost expecting you to tell me "the answer isn't a kettle boiling over" because I'm *really* trying to figure that one out and can't come up with anything that fits perfectly smilies/smile.gif. I'll stick with "string, or nothing!"

And I'm starting to feel embarrassingly young; I first read LOTR 12 years ago, and I was still young enough then that my father was reading it aloud to me and two of my brothers for a bedtime story (well I remember when we finished the "Flight to the Ford" chapter where at the end Frodo sees the Nazgul starting across the ford and then collapses into unconsciousness. My dad then closed the book: "OK, time to go to sleep." We protested loudly until he consented to read the first page of the next chapter, so we could see that Frodo was not, in fact, captured by Ringwraiths).

Samwise
03-30-2002, 09:43 PM
And the same to you, Rae!
"There must have been a mighty crowd of dwarves here at one time," said Sam; "and every one of them busier than badgers for five hundred years to make al this, and most in hard rock, too! What did they do it all for? They didn't live in these darksome holes, surely? "

ok , just so we keep within the spirit of the thread, let's all tell our ages as a math riddle...lol

Kalimac
03-30-2002, 09:58 PM
Hooray! I wasn't actually too sure, Raefindel, just thought that was an answer that worked smilies/smile.gif. Happy Easter to you and all others who may be reading this as well; I said as much to Samwise earlier but it occurred to me rather belatedly that I should spread the joy, so to speak.

Samwise - he did indeed read that chapter before bedtime, but if I remember correctly he did tell us ahead of time that there was a really scary part coming up and we could wait until tomorrow afternoon, which of course none of us were having for a second; we wanted too much to find out what happened next. It's true that it took me a while to sleep after that, though.

For a riddle...I can't really think of any good straight-up riddles right now. Here's one which is sort of a "Who Am I" riddle; read the poem and identify what figure (real or literary) it's about (or whose epitaph could have read like this). Best I can come up with for the moment, I'm afraid:

If he'd have a happy life
Man should not obey his wife
Aspire to a higher post
Nor help a friend give up the ghost.

BTW I'm terrible with numbers so I'll just tell my age - 22.

But math is my worst subject!!!
Sigh...
Okay, if Gollum had fish to eat over 3 days, and ate 10 one day, 10 the next, and 11 the next, and one got away, how many did he have to begin with?
(Sorry, YUCK, but that was the first thing to come to my head).

Raefindel
03-30-2002, 10:04 PM
Yikes! Kalimac! Did you pull that one out of your noggin? I've been getting mine off the internet. I think I'd be better off with the math...

Kalimac

Raefindel - Um, actually I did make it up smilies/smile.gif. Thanks. Hope it's not *too* vague. The figure it's about is someone pretty much every English-speaking person has probably heard of/read about. And like I said, they could be real or literary.

Samwise, since when is 31 embarrassingly old? Maybe if you lived 500 centures ago when the average life expectancy was about 19, but then hey, we'd both be crones together smilies/smile.gif.

Kalimac

Certainly you can have the seeds, Samwise. What kind? (Are you a flower or vegetable planter?)

Raefindel, does that mean you got married when you were 19? And here I've had people tell me that *I'm* too young yet...

Samwise
03-30-2002, 10:22 PM
Hm....

Number one she would be

Samwise...um...Elanor, maybe, since she was "the Fair" and waited on Queen Arwen? I feel like I'm missing it completely. (One of those things where after you know the answer you slap yourself on the head - "Should have known that!")

Raefindel, neat - belated congratulations smilies/smile.gif. Waiting until you're twenty-five, forsooth. No one rule will fit everyone.

smilies/rolleyes.gif *Sam, would you calm down, for crying out loud.....*
It was Sam who had insisted on choosing him, declaring that Bill (as he called him) would pine if he did not come.
"That animal can nearly talk," he said, "and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He gave me a look as plain as Mr. Pippin could speak it: if you don't let me go with you, Sam, I'll follow on my own. "

Stephanos, you are correct - the answer is money. (Though Samwise, your answer fits nicely as well - hadn't thought of it, though smilies/smile.gif).

Raefindel - ouch, I'm sorry to hear that. That must have been miserable for you, not to mention your daughter. How old is she? I do hope she's mending quickly.

Everyone - your riddles are fantastic but unfortunately my brain is pretty much a vacuum right now; worked far too late this evening and have a split shift coming up tomorrow morning. I'll try to come up with some more guesses and riddles tomorrow evening, though smilies/smile.gif. See you then! Time for this girl to go to bed.
