All the books...

Has anybody here actually read all of Tolkiens books?
...if so, which was the best?

Well, I have not (as of yet) met anyone who has actually read all the books Tolkien ever wrote or were put together after his death from his various writings. But I have read The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and Unfinished Tales. I'm waiting impatiently for the day when I will have time to read the Histories. So far, Unfinished Tales seemed the best and the Silmarillion a close and necessary (sp?) second. I believe I am one of the few who could read straight through Unfinised Tales in a single day. smilies/smile.gif

Well, I've read Hobbit, LotR, Silmarillion, UT, and the first 5 of the histories, and, as a book, The Silmarillion is my favorite. UT is pretty good, but can't hold up on it's own (considering it's a collection of unrelated "short" stories). Of course, all of them are quite excellent, although the Histories can be pretty confusing. Remember not to read through UT or the Histories like stories; you'll become more confused than an orc stuck with 2 hobbits....

as far as story goes, the most vivid and character driven was LOTR, and that still remains my favorite, having read half the histories, UT, the sil, and this one book called the green knight which had absolutely nothing to do with middle earth.

I've read LOTR, Sil, UT Farmir Giles, Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Tree and leaf, Leaf by Niggle, Smith of Wooton Major, Sir Gawain Knight and something else I can't remember what the name is.

i'm new here, buti have read The Hobbit The Silmarillion LOTR and have readthe history of middle earth from 1-12 and Unfinished tales all ofthem are very interesting and the rest i will get after crimbo.The silmarillion is an excellent book deep but essential. so i have read quite a few they are brill.

Oh my god......I feel a bit inferior now.....I've only read LOTR and The Hobbit, I own The Silmarillion but have'nt read it yet!

Don't worry Princess, I'm right there with you! I've only read LOTR and The Hobbit, I meant to read the Sil (which my daaarling sis has) but instead I starting reading Feist's work, and I've been a bit sidetracked...I will try to do better.

I've read Lotr (lots and lots of times), Hobbit, UT and Silmarillion.

I have also read half of "The Tolkien Letters" which is a book I suppose you could say he wrote. "The letters" is a great book with lots of interesting information about things not mentioned anywhere else. And not as difficult as the HOME series. (I have tried it...)

LOTR is outstanding, as a reading experience.

I have read most of the books by Tolkien and throughly enjoyed each and every one. But I must say my favorite book is the Hobbit. It's the most simplistic, and you don't have to know the histories really to sit down and enjoy. I keep it at hand on my bookshelf if I feel like I need a quiet read. It's also the best book to help get new people into Tolkien because it is so easy to understand. Bilbo is every man(and woman.) Just a little hobbit who got a little nudge out of the door and ended up on a adventure that would shape the rest of his life(if only we were so lucky...)

If read the 3 books and I liked ttt the best because it had the most action. But it was also the hardest book to get trough. Al those different name's where confusing me. You know theodon, his son, his wife there name's where the same in some way and I could not sepperate them (well I could manage to some point some parts I had to read over before I understood, but hey it was worth it).

I applaud everyone who has read a book of the History of Middle Earth series all the way through. I can read parts of them, but Christopher Tolkien can be really dry....

However, I adored the Silmarillion, and it's nice to get some backround on things in it from the Unfinished Tales and other books of HoME.

Helkahothion if you've had trouble with TTT, try reading The Silmarillion. It's way more confusing than anything in LotR.

Really? I did not find "The Silmarillion" at all confusing...

I have read "The Hobbit", "Lord of the Rings", "The Silmarillion", "Unfinished Tales", "Lost Tales 1", and am in the middle of "Lost Tales 2". Those last 2 are the first two in the HoME series. I'm finishing that, since I'm 15 now, I'll have quite a few under my belt by the time I'm 25. LOL
