I see that my thread was closed within minutes of opening because people did not like my tone. As I said, I do not want to disrespect people who love the books. I do too, honest! But I do think that too many people on the interenet are segregated into their own little worlds and unwilling to put up with any kind of debate, when it's supposed to be a vehicle of freedom. i spoke the way I did to encourage responsesand instead was closed down. I really would like to talk about the Simarillion, which I think was a poorly put together piece by Tolkien's son to capitalize on his father's memory, and the fact that people are sometimes a little TOO obsessed with Tolkien. Is that ok?

Jonathan,

As Galadriel says, click on "search" that appears in the upper right of the screen. You will find many threads which debate the precise question of how difficult or easy it is for readers to understand and appreciate the Silm.

Secondly, regarding fanfiction.... I am a moderator in the Shire which is the beginning RPG forum. And, yes, we do collective stories that grow out of Tolkien's Legendarium. You might be interested to learn that many writers of original fantasy such as Marion Zimmer Bradley recommend that less experienced writers hone their skills by precisely this means. You may also be surprised to learn that numerous folk on this site who produce fanfiction and RPGs also do original fantasy writing.

Thirdly, read the FAQs and policies at the beginning of the forums that outline the basic rules. An opinion question like this doesn't belong in Books. It will likely be shut down or shifted.

Jonathan,

First and foremost, welcome to the 'Downs. smilies/smile.gif

I am truely sorry if I offended you in my post. Although, I am NOT sorry that I voiced my honest opinion. For one, the title: 'What's WRONG with you people' isn't the most friendly of subject lines. Secondly, your tone of voice in your writing was clearly elevated. Remember, caps mean yelling. smilies/smile.gif

And please, read the FAQ and use the search function.

Thanks,
Fëa

So much good advice has already been given that I have nothing to add - except that this thread is being moved to the Novices and Newcomers forum. Only book discussions on this forum, please.
