Hey all! Ther are so many great quotes from LotR! Can you guys think of any? I can:
Many who die deserve life and many who live deserve death. Can you give it to them? Don't be too eager to deal out death in judgment for even the very wise cannot see all ends.
Also look at my signature.
If you're so inclined to e-mail me with some cool quotes, please be my guest!

My fav quote is from the Hobbit.
"May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks."
This is an amazing passage from the Silm, it really brings home the evil of Melkor

How's this one:
"Not all who wander are lost."
And this one (gotta love it):
"Praise them with great praise!" This one is fully alter-able to say: "Praise me with great praise." smilies/smile.gif

i dont know if this is from the book as well as the movie:
Where is the horse and the rider,
Where is the horn that was blowing,
They have passed like rain on the mountain,
Like wind in the meadow
The days come down in the west
Behind the hills, to shadow...
Dark Shadow

i love
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all that wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken:
The crownless again shall be king.
i think someone already said that.....

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort"
- and so it all begins...

I love the gaffer sayings.

For creeps & chills, there's always this:
"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie."
<last line spoken in eerie whisper, of course>

How about my signature. And I like this one too- "One thief deserves another" Saruman
"Mind your Ps and Qs..." Merry
"There is a seed of courage hidden (often deeply it is true) in the heart of the fattest and most timid hobbit, waiting for some final and desperate danger to make it grow...the courage that had been awakened in him was now too strong; he could not leave his friends so easily." I always loved this one

I don't have ROTK with me right now, so I can't look it up, but my favorite quote is:
"You can't go through Mordor with naught but your skin!"
-Sam to Frodo
It goes something like that, but I don't think thats exactly it.

"Treachery, treachery I fear; treachery of that miserable creature. But so it must be. Let us remember that a traitor may betray himself and do good that he does not intend..." Gandalf, of Gollum (ooo, forshadowing)

I prefer the lighter quotes to the foreshadowing and tear-jerking kind, my sig is one and my old sig: "I don't want to answer a string of questions while I am eating, I want to think.""What? At breakfast?" or something to that effect. There are others but I can't for the life of me remember what they were smilies/rolleyes.gif

Can't remember it excatly but it goes something like; "Do not go to the Elves for council, for they will tell you both yes and no."
(Is that right? Can't remember where I read it and I don't have a book close to hand.)

Here are a few of my favorites:
'If you don't let me in, Frodo, I shall blow your door right down your hole and out through the hill.' - Gandalf
'Come in! Come in! I thought it was Lobelia.'
'Then I forgive you. But I saw her sometime ago, driving a pony-trap towards Bywater with a face that would have curdled new milk.' - Frodo & Gandalf
"How long have you been eavesdropping?
"Eavesdropping, sir? I don't follow you, begging your pardon. There ain't no eaves at Bag End, and that's a fact!" - Gandalf & Sam
"Fool of a Took! This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party. Throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nuisance. Now be quiet!" - Gandalf
'Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our Fellowship in Middle-Earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears evil.' - Gandalf
I am a servant of the Secret Fire,
Wielder of the flame of Anor.
Dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udûn.
Go back to the shadow!
You shall not pass!! - Gandalf
'Behold, I am not Gandalf the Grey, whom you betrayed. I am Gandalf the White, who has returned from death. You have no color now, and I cast you from the order and from the Council.' - Gandalf

I have a question about the quote
"Not all those who wander are lost"
because in my book it says that (the paperback copy with the ringwraith on the cover), but some of the others on the forum have
"Not all those that wander are lost"
And I also found that one a quote website, which one is right?
I know this may be off topic, but I was just wondering, I want to have it correct, it is my sig and all smilies/smile.gif
I LOVE this part of The Hobbit, it makes me laugh everytime I read it. And since nobody has put it up, I think it needs to be...
"Blimey,Bert!Look what I've copped!"
"What is it?"
"Lumme if I knows! What are yer?"
"Bilbo Baggins, a bur-a hobbit,"
"A burrahobbit?"
"What's a burrahobbit got to do with my pocket, anyways?"
"And can yer cook 'em?"
"Yer can try"
The part where the three trolls catch Bilbo when he is being a burg- I mean expert-treasure-hunter.
And the best:
"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve!"

I have a few one is my signature and the other really isn't a quote but it touches my heart. It starts when Illuvatar finds that Aule made the dwarves. " In my inpatience I have fallen into folly. Yet the making of things is in my heart from my own making by thee;and the child of little understanding that makes play of the deeds of his father may do so without thought of mockery, but because he is the son of his father. But what shall I do now, so that you be not angry with me for ever? As a child to his father,I offer to these things, the work of the hands wich thou hast made. Do with them what thou wilt. But should I not rather destroy the work of my presumption?" Then Aule took up a great hammer to smite the Dwarves and he wept. But Illuvatar had compassion upon Aule and his desire, because of his humility; and the dwarves shrank from the hammer and were afraid, and they bowed down their heads and begged for mercy. And the Voice of Illuvatar said to Aule:" THY OFFER I ACCEPT EVEN AS IT WERE MADE

This was the sort of stuff they liked. Short and obvious.
narrator, during Bilbo's speech
How about some of the great movie lines that weren't in the books, like:
You are full of surprises, Mr. Baggins!
Gimli (his accent is SO cool)
One of my faves from The Hobbit, great when you're reading the book out loud:
Gandalf? Never heard of him!

what about the funny and sarcastic qoutes?
Legolas:
The strongest must seek a way, say you? But I say: let a ploughman plough, but choose an otter for swimming, and for running light over grass and leaf, or over a snow--an Elf
Gandalf to Legolas in Caradhras:
If Elves could fly over mountains, they might fetch the Sun to save us
Gandalf:
"Knock on the doors with your head, Peregrin TOOK"
yeah they made me laugh
smilies/smile.gif
I just read this one and it made me laugh...
"Been there, Done that, Got the T-shirt"
Then Bilbo Baggins "Please don't cook me kind sirs!I am a good cook myself, and I cook better than I cook, if you see what I mean."
And, of course, I have to put in a bit of Geoffrey Chaucer....
"And therefore let me beg of you, my lords
If you should think my story ill accords
With the original...
Or if the words I use are not the same
As you have heard,I beg you not to blame
My variations; in my general sense
You won't find much by way of difference
Between the little treatise as it's known
And this, a merry story of my own."
I can't think of anymore right off.....

Yummy! I like this thread. Anyway, here are mine:
"You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin- to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours- closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends . . ."- the meaning of friendship in a nutshell.
"Advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill."
"The Road goes ever on and on/ Down from the door where it began/ Now far ahead the Road has gone, / And I must follow, if I can, / Pursuing it with weary feet, / Until it joins some larger way, / Where many paths and errands meet. / And whither then? I cannot say,"
"And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom"
"Nothing is evil in the beginning"
"You may find friends upon your way when you least look for them"
"Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens"

My favourites:
"Shall I always be chosen? Shall I always be left behind when the riders depart, to mind the house while thy win renoun, and find food and beds when they return?"
"All your words are but to say, you are a woman, and your part os in the house. But when the men have did in battle and honor, you have leave to be burned in thee house, for the men will need it no more. But I am of the house of Eorl, and not a serving woman.I can ride and wield blade, and I do not feel either pain or death"
"A cage. To stay behind bars, untill use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is beyond recall or desire."
All Eowyn, Eomunds daughter, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, the White Lady of Ithilien
****************************************
Some more:
"I made a promise Mr. Frodo. Don´t you loose him, Sam Gamgee. And I don´t mean to."
Sam, in the FOTR movie
"And now, at last it comes. You will give me the ring freely. Instead of the dark Lord, you will set up a queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful, and terrible as the morning and the night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain!Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair."

Hey guys! These are all great quotes! I'm so glad everyone is posting them.

this one is chilly:
Mandos to the Noldor:
"Tears unnumbered ye shall shed; and the Valar will fence Valinor against you, and shut you out, so that not even the echo of your lamentation shall pass over the mountains. On the House of Feanor the wrath of the Valar lieth from the West unto the uttermost East, and upon all who will follow them it shall be laid also. Their Oath shall drive them, and yet betray them, and ever snatch away the treasures that they have sworn to pursue. To evil end shall all things turn that they begin well; and by treason of kin unto kin, and the fear of treason, shall this come to pass. The Dispossesssed shall they be forever."

Taurelilómëa-tumbalemorna Tumbaletaurëa Lómëanor.
That's Treebeard. I just love the way it sounds.
"It's most unfair," said Pippin. "Instead of throwing him out, and slapping him in chains, Elrond goes and rewards him for his cheek!"
Oh, he's just mad because Sam is sneakier than him.
"Hurray!" cried Pippin, springing up. "Here is our noble cousin! Make way for Frodo, the Lord of the Ring!"
Pippin in a nutshell.
"That settles it!" said Frodo. "Short cuts may make delays, but inns make longer ones."
^_^
"Grip! Fang! Wolf! Come on, lads!"
What great names for dogs. If I ever have three dogs, they're going to be Grip, Fang, and Wolf. Oh yeah, baby.
"...Mr. Strider may have an honest reason for spying and eavesdropping; but if so, I should advise him to explain it."
Ooh. Denied, Strider!
"Go back!" he cried. "Go back to the Land of Mordor, and follow me no more!"
You tell 'em, Frodo!
"I wonder what kind of story we're in..."
A great kind of story, Sam. The best kind.
"I hope you've made inquiries about inns along the way?"
I think that's approximately it, but you get what I'm talking about. Frodo to Sam at Cirith Ungol.
That's all I can think of now. I'll come back with more if I think of any!
