I am curious to which characters from ME that people in this forum identify with the best, a ME litmus test if you will.

Now this is not your favorite, but who you feel you most resemble, so please post away.

Durelen, this topic came up once before...here's what I said smilies/biggrin.gif :

I would have to say that I identify most with Eowyn. Being a woman in a (somewhat) man's world. Also, feeling the pain of un-requited love, but moving forward to find new happiness. She is a deep character who feels very real to me

But I would most like to be like Legolas. I love his demeanor and personality, his skill, and his loyalty. The war he is taking part in is not for the elves, win or lose, they will fade into the West. Never-the-less, Legolas fights tirelessly and valaintly.

i thought i remembered a similar topic but wasn't quite sure if it asked the same question or someone just took a tangent and it ended up like that.

Anyway, I forgot to mention who I thought I identified best with. I think Bombadil, when I am around my friends and family i am pretty ironic and very sarcastic(although it is very easy to miss if you don't know me)silly at times and rarely serious. I also have a large store of useless information just like Tom, which I often screw up. Many more comparisons, I don't really think I need to get into at the moment.

I remember this topic too. I feel a bit like poor old Pippin - tries hard, often gets things wrong and makes a mess of things, out of his depth, not the brightest bulb in the box, but very well meaning and loves his friends.

What about all the recent newcomers?

Eowyn...but parts of me resemble Arwen and Galadriel too...can someone take the "recently turned into a corpse" part offff my name please :P
Eowyn is outwardly strong...but inwardly hurt...she loves an ideal until Faramir reveals what it is to love someone truly...the man not the enigma

Without question, it's Shelob for me. "Man's world" indeed! Hah! It's my world, and don't you forget it, or I'll spray you with flesh-eating sinews and drag you off to my black hole!

Before you contradict, consider my solipsist view of the world and ask yourself if it's really worth the trouble.

Oddly enough, Frodo...Can't say that I've saved the world (lately smilies/wink.gif ) but there are times that I feel like I see things and think about things that alienate me from the more jovial around me. But when it comes down to it, I can get my grub on and sing bath songs with the best of them!

I identify most with that fox that came upon the company sleeping in the woods in "three is company" because of his incredible insignificance. Or perhaps Pippin because he's fond of beer. But more seriously Ilùvatar because I am god.

All my life I'm breaking between Eowyn and Merry. To be honest, Eowyn is whom I'd rather like to be like. Merry is more what I really AM.

...Well, he's cynical and dark from time to time (lol, VERY dark, he just doesn't show his feelings). On the other hand, people call him 'Merry' and not without a reason. He IS merry, really, or better, he makes other people so. Um, sarcasm can be funny, don't you think?

Brave when it's needed...

From time to time feeling all alone and depressive (um, remember the ride of the Rohirrim?)

So...that's my life...shortyl. smilies/cool.gif

I think perhaps Boromir, I see in him human failings and judgements clouded by passion and ambission. Hes mortal and has always stood out in my readings as my favorite.

I love his bravery and frailty, his want to do good and his final doom that reminds me of our mortality.

Boromir.

I think I identify most with Pippin, even though I am a girl. I think this because I try to do things well, but I always screw up and make a fool of myself. Example:
My Dad: Zaelia,(not my real name)Are you deaf?!
Me:What? [blushes at what I just said without thinking, and tries to hide under the table]
I also tend to get myself into trouble. smilies/smile.gif I'm not the best behaved kid in the world smilies/smile.gif
I learn the hard way, usually by getting grounded smilies/tongue.gif
I think I also just have the personality of a hobbit: doesn't like change usually, I have a general love of life... But like Pippin, I wouldn't say "no" to an adventure.

Although I am a girl, my flawed character, and my need to comfort, lead me to identify with Boromir. And as it's been said before, Pippin, who has a taste for beer, is close to my heart as well. smilies/wink.gif
Still, Galadriel, as portrayed by Cate Blanchett, strangely enough, reminded a few of my friends of me, as they told me after seeing the movie. Maybe it has something to do with my complexion, my eyes, or the way I am when I am mad. Go figure.

Cant decide..... Legolas Greenleaf or Aragorn (as King Elessar)

Marileangorifurnimaluim

Frodo.

My life is similar to his, believe it or not. I was faced with a choice between losing everything, my home, my job, my family, my friends, to help those who would never thank me for it, would in fact hate me. There was no reason for me to take action, except that it was the only right thing I could do. It was the only thing that was right, it would neutralize to a large degree a sociopath.

I was told by my allies "wow, you're brave - don't mention my name." I wish I had Sam frankly!

Of course there was no ring or cracks of doom, instead it involved the police, the FBI, the IRS, the States Attorney, two magazine articles and a book to keep people out of a really bad situation. I understand those who read my story find themselves cheering for me, that's what the author said, but for myself I was just quietly going forward knowing full well the price I would pay. I couldn't even admit for one moment that I didn't want to, because even that would weaken my resolve too much.

Didn't save the world, it concerned about 75 people give or take. Not that they know it, or that it matters if they do. I find I don't care, because I knew going in that wasn't relevant. Even if it hadn't worked it's about doing the right thing at any cost, you see? Not even the hope of success.

Now it's over, and I find that despite my happy peaceful life now, there are some wounds that don't heal. Like Frodo I automatically expected I could carry on where I left off after all was said and done and find that's not true. Probably Tolkien knew that from his own life. I don't regret a thing, and would do the same (though it would be a lot harder knowing in advance what it would be like!) But still, you can't go through something like that and not be fundamentally changed. I know firsthand Frodo was quietly very happy he passed the test of his courage and heart, happy to see others safe, but he was tired, like I am. And to explain why, well, it's rather heavy now isn't it? He didn't want the attention because it was another burden, and too much. Trouble is, once you've passed one major moral test, there a thousand little ones to follow and you just want to rest. Escape for a while.

Hi Lush!
No actually, I thought you'd be bored "yeah-yeah-yeah, another windy post Maril smilies/rolleyes.gif - who I identify with is..!"

The simple version: I brought down a rich and powerful "bad guy," a dangerous wacko. And scared the **** out of the States Attorney.

It's about time someone started scaring the &%$# out of attorneys! They have too long a history of scaring the %$#@ out of us!
All kidding asie, you did a brave thing. I have felt firsthand the devastation that occure when rich, powerful bad guys run the show. We need more people like you, in all parts of the world, especially where I come from.
I guess in what you did, the comparison between you and Frodo is appropriate. Although I'm sure you are a bit taller. smilies/smile.gif

Marileangorifurnimaluim
12-27-2001, 02:30 PM
hahahahahahahaha! Taller? Actually no! Frodo and I would see eye to eye, or close to it. I certainly couldn't see over the top of Pippin's head were he blocking my view. But I'm not solid enough to make a hobbit of any kind - or ent despite the long nomme de guerre.

But I was thinking less of the circumstances and more of just understanding the mindset, especially after all is said and done.

-Maril

PS, in all fairness the States Attorney was a decent guy: "You've really stirred up a hornets nest. Do you know how many lawyers I'm dealing with - everyone has one! Even witnesses. Isn't anyone one on your side?" Leaned back, smiling: "Nope." He shook his head in disbelief. "What I'm worried about is your safety, more than anything else."

Funny I said anything. I usually don't talk about it, no one at work knows a thing. Anonymity I guess.

I haven't read the books in a few years and just started again this week. So, I feel a little hasty answering before all the characters are clear in my mind. But Marin sparked a connection for me, between myself and Frodo.

I feel most like Frodo when he is about 1/4 of the way through the journey. He started off innocent and unproved but still aware of life outside his dwellings (at least more that Pippin or Merry, due to Bilbo's and Gandalf's influence). Then he began to complete some the journey and he realized how little he truly knew and how small each of his strides were. At the same time, he gained the knowledge that although his strides were short, they were also meaningful as long as they took him towards his goal.

That's where I am now. I may be a small part of a vast universe but I will find my way.

Probably a little more than elated at first, but then the problems witll start: Keeping power, and keeping oneself from boredom (an ambitious person, having control of the world, will have nothing left to aspire to!). I wouldn't want Sauron's job.

Glad to see so many women here! I think I probably identify with Frodo the most, I feel kind of alientated from everyone around me and I can't explain it, even to my friends. I feel very much like I will always be alone no matter who I am with. I also identify with Eowyn's sadness. However, when I'm in better spirits I feel like Pippin, if only because of being accident prone and having a love of beer.

I'd have to go with Merry for myself, although I'd much rather be a lovely elf. smilies/smile.gif Merry, though, was far more complicated than he originally seemed, which is definitely me. Plus, he seemed happy-go-lucky and dense at times most of the time, but he actually proved to be insightful and quite intelligent, which (I hope, at least) is me. Plus he's a fan of food, and is fallible, yet capable of doing great things. He was terrified of the Nazgul on the battlefield in Gondor and hid for a moment or two, yet managed to stab it. He had hidden courage, and that's something that I also believe I have.

Although there's also quite the Pippin in me; I tend to trip and spill things and say the wrong thing at the wrong time and make a general *** of myself. *grins*

Now that I've talked more about myself than anyone probably wanted to hear, I'll shut myself up. Oh, and hello! I'm new. smilies/smile.gif

I guess that I fell that I am most like Aragorn, even though I am a woman. The things that I see are:
When Strider is mending Frodo wounds after the stabbing in WeatherTop.
After Moria, Strider totes out Frodo with care, for fear that he is dead.
Mending Sam and Frodo's wounds after Moria
The Houses of Healing
His humilty when being crowned
His mercy towards the people
His strenght in battle

There are more that I could put, my best friends says that I match Aragorn to her more than any character. But I say that I am more like Pippin, I seem to say things at the wrong time, even though everything works out right, it seems awkward at the moment.

I don't think I can be bought, or seduced by power. I know more about how the world works than most, and I am still reasonably sane and compassionate. I have bushy eyebrows and twinkly blue eyes that can kindle in both mirth and anger. I also like my pipeweed...

I live on an army base and will be going into the army as soon as I graduate which is in ohhh...*counts on her fingers and toes* around four and a half months...I guess I could identify with Eowyn.

I'm probably more like Legolas in female form(: Because I LOVE the woods. If it was summer weather year round I'd live in the woods, and I am serious! Also because I only speak when I have to and it says in the lord of the rings that Legolas is sort of a fast runner and I run track so thus my reasons!

Hmmm... This is a good question. I don't really know. Kind of like Arwen because I have dark hair, in fact, my parents almost called me Arwen (They are LOTR fans too) but they thought it would be too wierd. I am also not as beautiful as Arwen was. I am kind of like a hobbit because I am short. Maybe like Rosie Cotton because I have never really had any big adventures.

My favorite character is Frodo. I feel so sorry for him, he gets soo much pity. I also like legolas, just because he is an elf and can do so many cool things.

It's rather hard to say, for me. I don't really know, I suppose if I had to say, it would be split between Frodo and Sam. Odd I know, but I have my reasons.

Such as being the one pillar of strenght my family had when my sister was killed a car crash, though I grived, HARD. She was the one person that knew me best.

And it's hard thing to think about. We'd had this awful argument the week before on the phone and were still fuming when it happened. She was killed by a truck driver, who had been doing drugs. Hit head on.

For a long time, I didn't want to go on, but well, forced myself to keep going. Even though I knew it could and would never be the same again. But here I am, still going, and making something of myself. I know she'd be proud, as I was proud of her. What I'm trying to say is, it's easy to give up, to throw everything away and quit, but it's harder to go on, but in the end, you'll make it.

Definetly Pippin! I'm usually the youngest of all my friends, having a late birthday, so I can identify with Pip, since we're both a little apt to doing the wrong things and saying the wrong things at the wrong time! I see him as someone who has someone to prove, and so do I. But Pippin is irrepressible, something I'd like to be!

Pips, I'm so sorry about that. That must have been (must still be) a horrible thing to live through. Can definitely see where Sam would be the model there.

For me, it's Pippin; a little too inquisitive for my own good sometimes, and a talent for getting into trouble way over my head when traveling; for him, the burned hand (metaphorically) taught best and for me it was the (literally) scarred hand. Another story for another time...

Personally, I think that there is a little of each of the characters in each of us.
We all have a weakness like Boromir, that we fall to occasionally.
We all have a gentle side like Legolas.
We all have rough side like Aragorn.
We all have a sneeky side like Gollum.

I'm another Pippin, i hate to admit. (I like to be different) I tend to say random and witty things like Pippin, I tend to be overly curious to try new things ( I chewed fish flavored gum one time just to see how it tasted. DO NOT TRY THAT AT HOME! And I like the dirt flavored Jelly Beans) and I like food. I eat alot! Bein a Pippin is not so bad. He is my favorite character after all, but sometimes it would be nice to be a Sam, humble and loyal and loving and brave! I would say I'm like Eowyn because 1. I'm female and 2.On the outside i'm strong, but hurt inside. Also I'm a little bit of Arwen, because she's an elf, which are very close with nature, like me and because of her love. Also I'm a little of Pippen, also because he's such a fool. I'm like Sam too, because i'm loyal to my friends and i'm shy.
Most of all though, i'm like Frodo. (I even took a LotR personality test, and thats who I was, and as it said smilies/smile.gifLike Frodo, I'm committed to relationships and thier growth. I tend to be an idealist. While being compasstionate yet can sometimes be "over emotional". I can even be somewhat sadistic but am always looking to the furture. It sounds dumb as i'm writing this, but if you knew me it would make sense and I know I wrote a lot of people, but thats me, i'm a lot of different personalitys at once.

I can relate to Sam best. The reason is that he is an ordinary guy, assisting a friend and going to the ends of the earth while risking his life for a quest that was not his to bear. He could've said no. He could've but he didn't. Sam wasn't the wisest or event the strongest of the Fellowship but he was the most loyal. Believing that above all his friendship with Frodo was worth risking his life and that his friend need not carry that burden alone if he didn't have to. I guess I just have a strong connection to those who are close friends. Though I have few, they are like precious jewels. They are not perfect, and have flaws, but they are worth the world to those who know their true value.

Hrm...I think I identify with a lot of the traits of Boromir, desiring to do good but maybe not always seeing the "big picture." I would say I have some of the characteristics of an elf, I'm usually pretty good at guessing what people are thinking. Actually one of my friends did accuse me of reading her thoughts, but that's another story. I don't think I really relate to Aragorn much, but I identify with "Strider."

So basically I'm all jumbled and don't really identify with anyone in particular. Maybe I'm a wraith or something.

I would probably say Éowyn or Aragorn, as we are quite similar in personality. My resemblance to Éowyn is that I'm female and have unrequited love, but I'm also trapped in a frustrating situation where, like Éowyn, I can't do the things I want to do. My resemblance to Aragorn is that I quite like my own company and a lot of people I know describe me as being a 'leader'.

It changes throughout the day. I start out as a troll when I wake up, become a nice little hobbit in the morning, and then maybe an orc once I've had too much caffeine. Seriously, I think I am most like Aragorn, despite the personality test which says that I am like Arwen (an insult to a male like me, if I didn't like her so much).

After reading through the 3 pages of this thread it seems that Pippin is the character most people identify themselves with. There must be a deep psychologically telling meaning behind it. Is it because we tend to put ourselves down, saying we're foolish and screw-ups and all that? Would other people who know us well agree with our self assessment? I wonder... *ponders*

Well, I'm another Pippin; I'm a little of both Pippin and Merry. I'm a Took: being very hobbity in that I'm a terrible homebody, but I have a spark of that Tookishness that keep me from being a total adventure-phobe. I know Pippin's foolishness backwards and forewards. But what I identify with most, is all the times Merry and Pippin feel small and lonely and out of their league. Frodo and Sam have a strong purpose, but Merry and Pip often feel like they came along for nothing. Though in the book they planned the whole thing out and conspired with Sam to go along, they still felt like "what am I doing here?" quite a bit. Especially Merry on the way to Gondor with the Rohirrim, and Pippin feeling bad after dropping the stone and stealing the Palantír. But then they can also be jolly and carefree better than anyone else, and provide welcome levity to the dark and foreboding storyline! Those two are far more complex characters than they get credit for. smilies/tongue.gif

Hmmm, off the top of my head, I think I'm most like Frodo. But definitely with some Tookishness in the mix. I guess I can identify with his situation of being put into a leadership position whether he liked it or not, in a fight he didn't necessarily want to be in, but he went for it with his whole being behind it.

But yet again, I have the stubbornness of Gimli (do I ever) and the aggressiveness of Legolas or Aragorn. Sheesh, I don't know, put all of the personalities in a blender and there you have it: me!

Well I was going to try and be clear and to the point about describing myself, but I really don't think that's possible when talking about my personality.

I would definetly say that I identify with Gimli the most. I am even short but still strong and well-built. I am good with my hands and I do complain a bit but when something goes down there is no one better to have at your side. I am also (or so I have been told smilies/smile.gif .) as stubborn as Gimli is, and as proud of himself as Gimli is. My best friend, oddly enough, is also quite a bit like Legolas, and our friendship quite a bit like theirs. The tester said I was also a lot like Sam. Now THAT I can see! I'm always loyal to my friends. Heck, I beat up two of the Demon Boys on my street all the time when they tried to make trouble for my friends and/or family.
