Read the books. You'll find the answer to your question and you'll appreciate the story much more than if you've just seen the movie.

Hi small! Welcome to the downs. Post Well.
Bekah, are you trying to tell us something?
Also try to read the Silmarillion, it will help you understand the Grey Havens and Valinor better.

Sorry, I just have strong views.
I reckon you should read the books before the movie, but don't worry, I have nothing against people who have seen the movie but not read the books. My best friend hasn't finished TTT, and she's seen both movies.

Hello. I am new here. (this seems to be the standard opening)My favorite character is either Aragorn or Legolas because they're cool. I am not a hopeless "I love Legolas" case. What are the message icons for? Anybody know? And what is a "wandering ghost"? (I guess I am one) Thanks!

I'm in total agreement with Bekah on that point. The written work of Tolkien connects with many of us on so many levels; from the gutrock of one's soul so to speak, that it is very hard for the film version to touch and make contact that profoundly in just a matter of hours-

Feanor of the Peredhil
02-13-2003, 10:03 AM
I'm not precisely new here, having been on as Keeper of Dol Goldur (my brother's name), but I am technically a newbie, as I've only posted a couple of times and I just created my own display name yesterday. I've read The Hobbit and the trilogy numerous times, I own the extended edition DVD of the Fellowship (has anyone else seen the MTV spoof hidden in the select a scene part?), and I've seen TTT over a dozen times. Sadly, I haven't read any of Tolkien's other works, but I'd like to think of myself as a mediocre expert when it comes to most of the Trilogy. Please nobody comment that Feanor was fully elven, since I've heard it all from Keeper of Dol Goldur in the comfort of my own home, but all may feel free to PM me. I'm exceptionally glad to have found such a great website on which to have intelligent discussions with intelligent people. Just as a warning to you all- I tend to hold to my convictions unless an unarguable point is made against them, so please, all, debate openly against me. I love the thrill of learning new things and being forced to think.

Ooh...somebody else!!! Yay!!! Oh goody!!!
Anyone who doesn't like that can put in down to my insanity. smilies/biggrin.gif
Somebody else has strong convictions, and likes debating!! Yay!!!
Sorry. But I do love arguing - and I don't mean quarrelling.
Got to go. School.

Hello, I'm definately not new here, I am just answering Small's question: The Grey Havens are the Havens at the Mouth of the Luhn. Mithlond, the harbours of Círdan at the eastern end of the Gulf of Lhûn, from which the Elves of the north of Middle-earth passed into the West during the later Ages. Hope that helps, all though you still really need to read the books.... smilies/biggrin.gif

Yes, you're right - and among other points, if you watch the movies before reading the books, you won't be able to create your own images for it. The ones you see in the movie will be stuck there.

And yet another new thirteen year old person. Have read all the books about three times (I'm pathetic aren't I..so few times...), and have a certain fondness for Faramir, Eowyn, Elrond, Celeborn, Erestor (don't ask)...actually, I have a fondness for all of Tolkien's characters...Anyways, and I've also read the Silmarillion (twice) and UT (well, most of it *tries to look innocent*)..and I have Lost Tales Volume I right next to me (literally).
I loved both of PJ's films, simply adored the Fellowship, was disappointed at Two Towers because of, what I think of anyways, as Faramir's character assasination.
Well, anyways, this ought to be a very interesting forum..
Bekah
02-23-2003, 01:38 AM
Welcome, Morchaint!
I've read the LOTR once. I've read various bits twice - like Book II of FOTR - and some three times - like most of the TT. I've read part of the Silmarillion. Aren't the UT the same as the Silm? I was under the impression they were...and I've read Leaf by Niggle and Smith of Wooton Major. And part of the Return of the Shadow. Although I like all of these, I like an intelligent debate most of all. Especially about something Tolkien-related, which is why I love this forum so much.
And I've seen FOTR countless times, and I dislike PJ's portayal of Faramir in TTT.
Love,

I discovered this site a couple of days ago. It is so great to find a LotR site without having to fight my way through hordes of Nazgirls. I've been a Tolkein fan since a friend loaned me a copy of "The Hobbit" in 1966. I'm embarrassed to say how many times I've read the books, and seen both movies. Good morning, day or evening to you all! This is my first post on this forum. I thought it appropriate it should be here! I have lurked about this site since about January, when I lookied about, read lots of the articles and decided that it would be cool to enter the essay contest here. I don't get on here much, but I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself and get used to posting. There are lots of interesting topics I'd like to think about, and it takes me forever to get around to posting ideas. This seemed easier!
I read the books about 13 years ago, but recently read them again and got so much more out of them this time! I'm a really big Pippin fan, and I'm now slowly being consumed by another idea that is taking me into Frodo's realm quite deeply. This kind of thing is addictive! It is good to be a part of it! Thanks for having me!

Hello everyone!
I was introduced to this site by my friend and this is soooo cool!! I've been into LOTR for ages but never really thought there were places where other LOTR fans could get togehter and talk about it and stuff. Can't wait to get into some discussions!

Hi Phervasaion, nPiLL, TheHobbit and Estanesse. Welcome to the downs! Post well.
TheHobbit: You will find that there are quite a few swedish people here! RPG stands for role playing game. I don't really do them, though I have tried them a couple of times. Basically, you pretend you are someone from Middle Earth and you go around and talk to people in that character.
The Green Dragon is the meeting place for all Barrow-Downs Role-Players. This is a place to jump into your first RPG. As you get more comfortable writing here you may journey to Rohan or maybe even Gondor.
For more information try Child of the 7th Age, or any moderator, or Dwarin Thunderhammer.
Click Here to get to the Green Dragon! (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=19&t=000034) but Read THIS before you post! (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=19&t=000005)
You can get to the roleplaying section by scroling down past Middle-Earth Discussions, Middle-Earth Fun and Games, and The New Silmarillion.

What to do? Well, if you have any curiosities about places or people in Middle-Earth, go to the Books section and ask them. The people there are very knowledgable. Just don't ask either of the following, they've been argued over endlessly:
'Do Balrogs have wings?'
or
'What is Tom Bombadil?'

::waves at everybody:: Hi, y'all, I'm another newbie. Wandered here after finding the personality and location tests linked to another site. smilies/smile.gif My personality says I'm most like Aragorn but also like Legolas and Merry, and my ideal location is Rivendell but I'd also like Bree or the Grey Havens according to the test(don't know how Bree got thrown in there!). Looks like a great site.
I've been reading Tolkien for several years and love the Silmarillion and others. The books are my first love, but I also enjoy the movies. smilies/wink.gif

Hi everybody smilies/smile.gif
I'm new myself. I kinda pride myself in that I'm not over-the-top insane about Lord of the Rings, but just fascinated by it, and I love a good discussion as much as anybody.
Apart from that, my claim to fame must be that I'm one of very few people to have leafed through the actual original manuscripts to Lord of the Rings. And yes, it was a knee-trembling moment.
I'm american, currently residing in Denamrk, and moving to Ireland in 6 months.
that should be enough said for now smilies/smile.gif

I also enjoy Star Wars, drawing (I'm currently working on a Elf soldier), reading, writing (fan fics especially), riding horses, and hanging out with my friends and my 8 mo. old German Shepherd.
I'm really looking forward to posting on this message board with a bunch of other LOTR fans... (maybe 'twill give my mom a break.....) smilies/wink.gif

I am new on here! I am known as Princess_Fairy my real name is Brittany! I come from South Africa (RSA). I love Tolkien, he is just like my hero. I have read most of his books! Some of them which I have treasured and some which I did not get into! I love the movies and this website! I found this website about a week ago through a pen pal! I never knew about the forum until BethBerry told me about it. I spend a lot of time on the chat room, with the intelligent and the unintelligent! Hope to meet new and exiting people!

Hello I am new here, my partner and sons think I am obsessed. I found this site, while looking for more Tolkien sites. I am always in one forum or another, I also like to chat. I have loved Tolkien ever since I read the Hobbit to my eldest son, who is now almost 23. The best thing about the LOTR movies is, Tolkien books that were out of print, are now available because of the interest generated by the films.I love this site. and will probably post lots in the forums.

I was an elf of Gondolin and later Gil-Galad's realms but both have fallen and I now hail from Imladris. I remain in Middle-Earth because I do not wish to see my ancestrial home on Tol-Erresea as of yet. I will help all who needs the abilities or a Noldorin elf in exile, all they need to do is ask.

I have been browsing over the last few days. I do roleplay, but I might wait until I've gotten used to BD before I join any of the RPGs here.
My favourite part of the site so far is the quote found at the top of each page.

Welcome The Evenstar, and other new people. Post well smilies/cool.gif
This site sometimes has very strict rules about posting. You need to always stay on topic, and the topic always needs to relate to Tolkien. I would highly recommend you read the "Barrow-Downs FAQ" at the top of the Novices and Newcomers forum. These are very handy and will answer many simple questions that most new members have. Additionally the Search function is a very useful feature of the site (so you don't repeat topics), and if you have a simple question that cannot be answered in the FAQ, try to find a previous topic about it, because chances are we have already discussed it, or send a personal message to an experienced member, most of us would be very welcomed to help with anything you need.
Have a good time Posting, and welcome to the Barrow-Downs smilies/smile.gif

Hello! I've been here before as bombadil, but in my absence that name has apparently been taken by someone else. I frequent another Tolkien board as well, but this one has by far the better discussions of serious book issues.
RL takes up far too much time for me to be a frequent post-er here, but I'll check in a few times a week and read the latest book threads. See you all around!

Hello everybody. I'm so unbelievably ancient I read LOTR for the first time in the "first authorized paperback edition." (Ok, 1969, and I was 15 yrs old) The films, in my opinion, are an incredible achievement/translation from literature to the language of film (and there is a BIG difference). But they both stand up to repeated readings/viewings. And I wasn't nearly so moved by the Grey Havens scene at age 15 as I was at age...well, you do the math smilies/smile.gif!
Oh yes, and my first beloved cat was named Frodo...

I actually had a question: are you allowed to have more than one account? Cause I'm not quite this new: I've been here for 2 months on another name. If this isn't allowed I'd be happy to give one of the accounts up, I was just wondering.

In answer to your question, Elvish Bostonian, accounts that are not used for a long period of time will be routinely deleted after awhile. It is best to use only one, since people get to know a nick and recognize the person's posts.

Hiya! I'm _Lembas_, and you may know me from the chat. I finally made myself an account for the forum (I felt left out, all of the nicks in the chat would look like Galad|Forum or Nilt|forumizing). Surprisingly, a lot of the messages I read here were very teenybopperish. I was under the impression that the forum had mostly been purged of people like that, but ah well. You learn to live with it.
Want to know more about me? Of couse you do. I'm 13 and I think Bakshi's LotR is so sad it's hilarious. That movie led me to believe that Nazgul rode around on pegasus-type things and Celeborn was pronounced Keleborn (until my dad read me the book in 2nd grade, that is). I'm not that fond of Jackson's version either. He made Aragorn channel a lemming and hurl himself off a cliff! And the Arwen add-ins! Ugh. Everyone hates Glorfindel. And Bombadillo. AND the Downs.
That's about it for now. Hope this message isn't too long. And another HIYA for all of you people who forgot I said it earlier.
