I think we can take what happened to Saruman as a model. Sauron simply faded away to become part of the "background evil" generated by Morgoth.
Did his spirit not go back to the undieing lands??
Or like Saruman did it just fade and be taken by the wind?

Since Sauron was a Maiar spirit he could not cease to exist completely. He probably just faded or found his was to the everlasting darkness where Melkor was. He would never again be able to take cause trouble on middle earth however I don't think he was able to reenter the undying lands either.

The most likely explanation is that he joined his master in the Void.

Sounds like he spent the rest of time in limbo(is that the right word im thinking of?)He can walk the world and see but can not influnce or corupt anyone. So basically he's dead and gone.

Your word is sufficient, however i doubt your theore he may have no power over the happenings of middle earth however that makes him far from dead though he is not truely in existence.

Even if he is "dead and gone" what difference does it make its like one less criminal on the street theres always another to take his place. And you cant stop that not with a hundred THE ENDS, not with a thousand HAPPILY EVER AFTERS.

This would imply that he is a ghost. But I'm sure that Morgoth, being his teacher (as such) would want Sauron to come to the same fate, if they had a choice of what to do.

he probably dwells in a place like valinor only for bad people (like heaven/hell)

Err, yes, kind of. He dwells in the Void, with Morgoth, until the Dagor Dagorath. It isn't really like Valinor, since there is nothing there - it is a void.

It says that Frodo saw a spirit emerging from Barad dur with its fall and dissapearing with the wind.Tahat was probably Sauron-Manwe banished him to the Void.
