I started to suspect Tolkien fever recently when I started ending sentences with "and no mistake" and referring to my husband as "my hobbit". (Can't help it...he's cute, short, and has big feet and curly hair!).

I named my rat Dr. Meriadoc Bramwell Livingston (Doc or Mr. Merry for short) and I oft call my guide dog "Ida Gamgee". (I did it this morning right before we left the house since she was in harness and she went nuts with excitment. BTW, out of harness she's known as "Ida Wilde".)
My friends claim that "track 1" of my brian goes something like: hobbits, Frodo, Sam, hobbits, hobbits, Tolkien, hobbits... smilies/biggrin.gif

When I was telling some friend about the game Zelda and I accidentally called the bad guy Gandalf instead of Ganandorf...she gave me this really weird look. After I said it again, she wrote 'Ganandorf' on my forehead-in ink-so I'd remember. It didn't work. smilies/evil.gif

I know I have it! I am Episcopalian, and am a lay reader. I asked my rector if for Pentecost when we read John 3:16 in a lot of different languages if I could read it in Quenya. Boy did I get a weird look! smilies/biggrin.gif
I also got a hold of the Lord's Prayer in Quenya, and have been reciting it when we say it in church. My husband is very worried about me for some strange reason! LOL!

I think people here at work belive Im in the later stages of Tolkien fever. No 1. Because Im always on this site reading and posting and talking to you guys. No 2.Because I insist on carting several large Tolkien books to and from work every day to read during my lunch break. No 3. Because Im getting the one ring for Valentines day. And last but by no means least No 4. because I must make at least 100 references or comparisons to Tolkien every day.
Im suprised they've put up with me for so long actually smilies/biggrin.gif

You know you have Tolkien fever when:
You've seen the movie 20 times like I have. As it is Tuesday, and the film will be discounted all day, I will make it 21 this afternoon.
I am also going to go buy Unfinished Tales today, and re-read the Silmarillion.
Almost the only thing I have been listening to...just a sec..ok, just turned on iTunes...for the last two months is the FoTR soundtrack.
It seems the Academy of Motion Pictures has Tolkien Fever too. 13 Academy Award Nominations!!!!!!!!

you know you have tolkien fever when you find it hard to "wake up" and live in the real world.....*sigh If anybody accidently stumble over elves while you're walking in the forest; let me know :-)

You know when you have Tolkein Fever when:
You dress up as various species (orc, elf, hobbit etc) whenever possible
You wear your hair in an elf style NON STOP and get nicknamed elfgirl or Legolas (Matt, if you are out there I am a girl, I do not have blond hair, and I am definately not graceful!)
You learn Elven languages and speak only elvish to everyone.
You get taken to the doctors when your parents are worried about your sanity and the way you have obtained a sword and insist on challanging EVERYONE.
You answer only to your elven or hobbit name, not to your real name.
You learn Enya's May it be, the song in "The Breaking of The Fellowship" and the words in "The council of Elrond" and sing them at the top of your voice as you walk, as gracefully as possible, down the street (without having too much to drink).
You spend every waking minute (and several sleeping ones)posting messages here, and in every other Tolkein forum, and surfing looking for more Tolkein related sites.
You get LOTR ringtones, screensaver, desktop, icons, t-shirts, bags, books, pencils, erasers, etc. and parade them around at school/work
You listen nonstop to the soundtrack and other, pre-film, songs relating to Middle Earth.
You try and work out which of the people you know are a) hobbits b)elves c)men and for the people you don't like d)orcs.
You count down the days till the next film.
Your birthday/Christmas/Easter list consists of: The one ring
LOTR photobook
LOTR insider's guide
LOTR etc etc etc
You see the film every day and twice at weekends and holidays. smilies/biggrin.gif

Ok, I have diagnostiged (?) myself and I have Tolkien fever.. not very badly, but bad enough.. I allready answer when someone calls me my elven name and I'm trying to learn quenya... and I do have a LotR site.. so I guess I have Tolkien fever.. uummm.. another one:
..When you dresses up in a grey cap and runs around in the forest, eating some cookies you've named "lembas"
..When you are trying every ring that "crosses your path".. could this one be magical then?
..When someone of your friends ask: "What is this LotR thingy?" you have a two hours long lessons prepared for him/her

(This goes more with the "You know you're a rabid Jurassic Park fan when..." list of mine, but it can be switched to apply here.)
...You've ever created a LotR parody and/or crossover. (Give Barrow-Wight some time and, hopefully, he'll put of the picture I did of Frodo on that mystical, on-so-fabulouse, dino-ridden island.) smilies/biggrin.gif
You know you have Tolkien fever when in class the teacher wants to know the name of the famous Prussian alliance-master who will be indirectly responsible for WWI, and you (after snapping your head up from the LotR that's lying oh-so-conspicuosly on your desk), look around in confusion and mutter "Bilbo?".... smilies/biggrin.gif
But wait, it gets better. The very next day, as you are once again preoccupied with the
LotR in the very same class, the question regarding Alexander III's most famous minister comes up, and you, caught unawares once again, snapped out of your reverie (involving Legolas, no doubt smilies/evil.gif ), say something that sounds suspiciously like "Valar?"...
Thank God my teacher has a sense of humor, or I would've had the book shoved down my throat by now.

In Theatre Arts class, I had to memorize a monologue and present it in class...I found a good one--that was normal, it had nothing to do with LOTR...I got up to the front of the class, forgot it and winged it with whatever popped into my mind--which happened to be Lord of the Rings orientated. No one knew what i was talking about.
I ran after my Boyfriend crying, "My precioussss, we will have it, yes we will my precioussss."
My school sweater has my name, Daegwenn, on the sleeve.
I almost got kicked out of the theatres for talking too much...I was just trying to inform my friends who Elrond is...and Gandalf...and Aragorn...and Boromir...and Legolas...and Galadriel...and-well...you get the point.
I am known at Magic the Gathering tournaments for my elf/archer deck-dubbed proudly: My Legolas deck.

Well, 9 friends and myself meet once every 6 weeks around a fire (sometimes on a mountain we call Weathertop), smoke pipes, drink beer, and discuss Tolkien. We read pasages and converse in a fashion much like we do here. We call ourselves The Dead Inklings.
Also sometimes when I'm thinking about Tolkien, or when I get really excited about anything, I say aloud, "Oh Elbereth! Ah Gilthoniel!". Would you believe I always shudder down the spine feeling delighted and courageous?!
Also, my wife told me a few days ago that she is worried about me and thinks I am obsessed.
Oh yeh! One more. One of the guys in our group gave his daughter the middle name Eowyn. I'd say he and I both have it bad! smilies/biggrin.gif

Saw it for the 21st time last night. Drag, though, the frickin cinema has moved it to one of its smaller screens (still not as bad as some small screens, but still: no surround sound. I went and complained to the management just as Frodo and Sam were leaving the Shire.). It's a travesty, I say! The most nominated film this year knocked out of the large room by....Ahnold in 'Collateral Damage.'

My local cinema moved it to the tiny screen after TWO weeks! GRRR!
And on the LOTR fever, I told my friend to meet me on Ormonde Parade, and later when she was making sure she remembered where to go she said it was Orlando Parade... someone's been watching too much Legolas.

Yeah. I also had to persuade the dolt to turn up the volume a notch and add some bass. There were speakers up the sides of the walls, so I asked why the surround sound system wasn't enabled, I was told "theatre two doesn't have surround sound." smilies/rolleyes.gif
Then what the $&@&&!!!! are those speakers doing sitting attached to the walls on either side??????

Oh, I long for the glory days of the non-cineplex world. There was a theatre in Montreal, the Imperial, a grand old theatre with balcony, balustrades, the whole nine yards. Deemed unprofitable by one of those big faceless corporations and turned into a rep theatre the last time I was there a few years ago. Probably office space by now.

I just came up with some more:
..when you have great fun coming up with different endings to the movie trilogy and is telling them to those of your friends who haven't read the books
..when you post in a "you know you have Tolkien-fever when.."-forum
..when you are trying to convince someone to read the LotR-series, and when they won't, you walk of calling them Gollum..
Glenethor

You know you have Tolkien fever when you go ordering around the hapless staff of some cineplex. And I am an imposing figure too (6'4" 270 lbs), with a sharp glare in my blue eyes when I am not a happy camper.
smilies/eek.gif
However, as I am paying $8.00 for the priviledge, I have no problem with asking that the film be shown properly.
BTW, there were some cool props at this place. There was a black banner, torn, looking well used, with a nice lidless 'Eye' on it. Looked like it could've come off the set of the movie. The windows (doors) leading into the place are lined with Dwarvish Runes. Quite cool, actually. Too bad the people who run the place are cultural Philistines.

In science, when you are asked about chemical equations and what you should minus from Hydrogen Chloride to make Hydrogen, you say "Minus Tireth, miss?" and get confused when you get funny looks.

I'm definately diagnosed with Tolkien fever. Every day i am reminded of this and have made many mistakes when in lessons concerning LOTR, luckily for me though my English teacher is also self-diagnosed. I have been called "legolas" on more than one occaision and answer to "Gorothlammothiel" frequently. I'd also like to add that you know you have Tolkien fever when:
Teachers are asking what all the scribles are on your books "well that's not German" and replying "no, it's Quenya" getting funny looks and also when you begin to draw out characters and symbols over test papers..... smilies/smile.gif

When you walk around all day trying to figure out the meaning of Tolkien's languages. Really, I do this. I speak Japanese, Spanish, English(of course), studied Latin, Greek and Hebrew in HS and Bible college.

Well, before I thought that i was just a hudge fan of the book, but since yesterday when i looked around my room, I realised that it is not so. I'm a looney fanatic. Why? Because yesterday I got a giant movie stand up with Gandalf, Galadriel and the fellowship, you know, the one that they put in cinemas, I don't know where to put it, it's stands in the middle of my room like a portal. My sister makes fun of me and says that I could put candles and flowers in front of it. I have heaps of other Tolkien related stuff : posters, the one ring, different book editions, soundtrack, screensavers, I even make clothes with cirth and tengwar runes on them but this might be too much.

Daisy: i know exactly how u feel! Ever since i saw the film (now 6 times!!) and read the books i dont think a day goes passed when i dont mention it 2 someone! Of coarse, this is as the person above said, their problem not mine! I am a fanatic, a huge fan, but i wouldnt say i was unhinged because of it! We all come 2 'ere (this site i mean) because we share a passion 4 one thing: Tolkien's work. And the number of people we meet every visit does JRRT a major credit, and lets each of us know we do not stand alone as near-obcessive fans! lol. I think perhaps we are not weird....just different. What is "weird" anyway? If people see us as weird then more fool them for not appreciating what we,and so many others, do. It also makes for interesting dreams, I have found myself before now in a world crossed between TheSims computer came, Harry Potter's Hogwarts school seching for a ring bearing elven script, on a broomstick carrying a bow and arrow and a wand.
I think that that alone qualifies me for mad status let alone all ym other "problems" smilies/smile.gif

May I just point out that 'obsessive' is an adjective, not a noun? Only reason I know that is that someone walked into one of those 12 step groups...(HEY! WE NEED ONE OF THOSE! Well, some of us, anyways... smilies/wink.gif and someone identified as 'Hi I am so and so and I am an Obsessive.' To which, someone in the peanut gallery replied an Obsessive WHAT!?

I may go to the movie for the 22nd time today. May. I can hardly walk, and I am thinking of getting on a bus for 45 minutes, and then sitting in a theatre for 3 hours? (rolls finger in circles beside left temple). I think I should just go crawl into bed...

eh...when you're studying astrology you name the Silmaril as one of the brightest stars...
and
when your teacher asks you to recite a random poem the only thing you can think of is one of the songs/poems from LOTR...
and...
if you have to computers right next to each other you download desktops of movie scenes and simply sit there staring at the screen smilies/smile.gif that's from my friend
I have a little blue star that a fortune-teller gave me hanging on my rearview mirror. The other day, I picked a friend up to go to dinner, and as we were pulling out of his driveway, he caught the star in his hand and said, "this is pretty."
To which I immediately replied: "Isn't it? It's the light of Earendil!"
...My friend just stared at me for the remainder of our drive.

I ordered my Legolas from the Toys R Us website, which is run by amazon.com. He comes in a set of 4 figures, and you get Frodo, Lurtz, The Witch-King, and Legolas. I also got Arwen with Asfaloth - the horse's "galloping" action is a riot!

I am constantly thinking of stories to come up with...and I am very tempted to make a story about Tolkien-aholics. ^_^
As for the Tolkien day, sure! Count me in...and if we get a day off of work then really count me in. *thinks about telling her teachers and boss that she can't make it to work because its a religious holiday--Tolkien day* Yup. That would be fun.
Other symptoms for Tolkien addicts are:
You sit with your friends, that are equally as obsessed, and when someone walks by, debate if he/she looks like a hobbit, elf, man, dwarf, orc, troll, etc.
When someone asks you the date, you reply 'The first of Solmath...'
Saying goodbye, hello, or basically anything comes quicker to you in Quenya than in your native language.
You can call someone an idiot in more than two languages...one of those languages is Quenya.
You were the only one laughing in the theatre when Bilbo says, "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." Or you can quote along with him.
You are convinced that your brother must have been an orc in another life.
If you tilt your hand to the left somewhat, you're boss reminds you of a hobbit.
Your sketch books are crammed with doodles and drawings that have been inspired by Tolkien's books.
Hmm...I think I may think of others later.

I'm a diagnosed TF. So're two or three of my friends. well, one of them's only an LF, but still...
Um...when, in conversation with one of your other tolkeinite friends, you accidentally call your science teacher "Mr. Elrond" because you just saw the movie the night before and his name is only missing the n anyway and only has a few added letters.
Said friend stares at you like you're smoking something unnatural.
Any chance you get, you say the following lines and variations on them:
"Our business is our own!"
"If you want him, come and claim him!"
"I will do it, though I do not know the way."
This last one IS a variation.
Your school is being renovated, and they're putting in new doors. So when a friend says they only need to put in one 'more door' you scream and cry "Mordor? Where? I'm afraid of MOrdor!!!"
The best English vocabulary words are ones that have to do with the sky or come from the latin words 'to rule', 'to find', 'to bring' and/or 'to bind.'
hope this qualifies. If this is baing sick, let it last forever!!

You know you're addicted when you sleepily pull any item of clothing from your wardrobe, pull it on and plod downstairs, to be greeted by...
You look very elvish today....
Yup, I've done that one. Doesn't help, possibly, that I have long, long, wavy hair, that is worn almost always with some kind of plait....a fashion choice, you understand.
You come downstairs, looking elvish, have lembas for breakfast, tick off the day on your Tolkien calendar, check these forums for any news, surf awhile looking for Tolkien related sites. Feed the cat called Gandalf and pass the field with horses on your way out, who you have nicknamed Snowmane and Shadowfax. Get to work, look nervously at your boss who wears a plain gold ring, bite back a Mae Govannon in greeting....
In the evening, a trip to the local pub....The Prancing Pony. Get called 'Lord of the Treks' by all your friends, tell them all they're a load of Uruk-hai, go home and seek solace curled up with Gandalf on the sofa, reading Tolkien, in the belief that noone understands you....
Ah Elbereth! Gilthoniel! Now I understand. This is the ending.

may have been posted already...
Whenever you see an eagle in the sky, you yell, "It's Gwaihir! He's going to rescue Gandalf from Zirikzigil!"
Whenever you see two or three eagles in the sky, you point and yell, "It's Gwaihir with his brother Landroval and Menuseld the Swift! They're going to rescue Frodo and Sam! Take me with you, Gwaihir, I want to see Mount Doom!"
Gelmir

Why would you go all to the trouble of getting Gwaihir and going to mount doom, I have been to mount doom, it hurts, espcially when lava comes from the top, you could lose your arms, beleive me it's painful, a couple of orcs took mine off and hit me with them, ouch! :( but now I'm dead, I grew my head, arms, legs, hands and other limbs, it's sooooooooooooooooooo good to be dead, wouldn't you say? Any hoo, come off looking like a complete lunartick, and get to the real story...
Oh dear I'm getting Tolkein Fever, ah well!

08-02-2004, 09:00 PM
Wow, this was an old thread! But I am going to put my answers anyway.
You know you have Tolkien fever when....
-you are taking notes on Spanish history and write "Catherine of Aragorn" instead of "Aragon"
-you write "Elven" instead of "Eleven"
-you write perfect Tengwar... everywhere. On your hand, your crappy pocketbook, your desk, your notes... etc.
-you answer your cell phone, "Hello, you've reached the Prancing Pony, how may I help you?"
-whenever someone says the word "stairs" you say "up, up, up, up, up the stairs!" and other things like that.
-you make a shirt with the White Tree of Gondor on it, which on the back says "Seven stars and seven stones and one white tree"
-you write notes to friends in Tengwar so other people can't read them; you write the whole of Galadriel's Lament on your arm in Tengwar out of sheer boredom
-you say that people who curse are "orc-minded" because it says so in the appendices... I guess that makes me orc-minded too... wah.
That's all I can think of now that apply to me!

And at work one guy had a good sized beard and instead of saying have a nice day it slipped I said "may your beard never witter" also I hum the movie soundtrack
But as Encaitare said she writes tengwar I can't however I had the anglo-saxon alphabet down and I'm working on tengwar

I do that a lot! I had a science exam and I think the question was something to do with making wine and fermenting etc. I was supposed to write the word "wine" and put "brandy" in front of it to make "brandywine"! My science teacher, who has apparently never read lotr, was shocked and thought I was an alcoholic and announced to the rest of the class that I was writing about brandy and wine. when i explained what had happened, he let me redo the answer and told me I had Tolkien fever! So when i saw the title of this thread, I just had to read it!
