Okay, something I was confused about when doing a tad of research....did the Gamgees change their name to "Gardener", or was that just his son Frodo, or....what?

I think it was Sam's son Frodo, but I'm not sure, I've never been clear on that myself.

Hope someone knows for sure. smilies/confused.gif

Now that the thought comes to mind I really have no idea. If I werent so cornfuzzed I might be able to find the answer.

Have you checked The Encyclopedia of Arda (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/)? They have the best info on the geneologies.

From what I have seen, Frodo Gardner, is the only one of Sam's children that seems to have a name change. Though it states in Appendix C of RotK that In addition some geneaolgical information is provided concerning Samwise the founder of the family of Gardner, later famous and influential.

Look at this. - From Arda
Gardner - The name taken by the descendants of Samwise Gamgee and Rose Cotton in honour of Sam's replanting of the Shire after the War of the Ring.

Well, I know Ealanor and Faramir Took became the Fairbairns. I'm not sure about the founding of the Gardener family...wait, hang on!

In RotK, "Scouring of the Shire", something is mentioned about folk starting to call Sam himself "the Gardener" and I believe it goes on to say that that became the family name, but I'd have to look and I'm too lazy to that just now.

Hmmmmm.......okay, thank you, all.
Gandalf: "Sam, do you know what Kingsfoil is?"
Sam: smilies/eek.gif "That's a weed! "
(Yeah, I know, that particular instance didn't happen that way in the book. Nevertheless, I thought it was kinda cute/funny that Gandalf asked Sam of all people, and of course, Sam's response....) smilies/smile.gif

Thank you, Joy. Hm. From the sound of this I guess I'll just stick with Gamgee, as far as Sam, Rose, etc. go.
Seems a sort of confusing subject--sorry about that. smilies/frown.gif

Well, the family trees only specify the marriages of two(three?) of Sam's children. They may adopt the name "Gardener" later on, but I'm guessing that your character, if she's one of Sam's children, would stay a Gamgee until she got married. (I hope I'm not spilling too many beans by revealing that, Samwise.)

Not to worry, Rosa, I'm not going to complain about spoilers. Besides, my favorite thing to do (since Jr. High when I first read the books) was to go over the family trees--no kidding, I once had all 13 of Sam's kids' names memorized. smilies/smile.gif (No, I didn't really have a life. smilies/smile.gif
And, no, this character does not get married according to the 'tree. (of course, the way I am making her out to be....never mind. ) smilies/smile.gif
Sam stood by him, his round eyes wide open - for he was looking across lands he had never seen to a new horizon.

Ah ha, sounds like me in High school. Used to know all the family trees, now I can only tell you some, with out looking at the book. Where does the mind go?

LOL, Pips! I wonder that myself!
"Elves! " exclaimed Sam. "Elves, sir!" He would have burst out of the trees and dashed off, if they had not pulled him back.
