View Full Version : another "you know you have Tolkienitis when..."

I am absolutly positive that I have Tolkienitis because of these 16 signs:

1. I listen to the LotR soundtrack nonstop (in fact, I'm listening to it right now).
2. I dress in LotR clothes (i.e. hobbit, elf, etc...) whenever possible. Actually, a few times my parents have walked in on me when I was in the clothes smilies/eek.gif
3. I actually roleplay with myself in Lotr scenes (no, not like that). My parents have walked in on that, too.
4. I talk to everyone I hate in Tengwar.
5. I am learning to to write, read, and speak Tengwar.
6. My room is covered in LotR merchandise (mostly Legolas).
7. I am going to get the One Ring soon.
8. If anybody ever disses LotR at skool I get seriously ****ed off and I stay in a bad mood for the rest of the day (trust me, it's happened before).
9. People always stare at me strangly when I walk around the streets screaming "Lord of the Rings Rocks!" (that's happened too)
10. I collect the action figures.
11. My friends know me as "Legolas Lover" and "elf princess."
12. My dad calls me a fair elvish maiden.
13. I talk how Tolkien writes.
14. I bought a bow & arrow set (I'm actually getting quite good).
15. I can repeat almost every line from the movie (I spend my lunch doing that).
16. My parents are getting worried.

My mom has caught me trying to walk like an Elf. She noticed that after I read to her the Song of Tinùviel that I walk or should I say glide/dance through the house.

I came up with this while thinking of my apartment: "In a hole, er, apartment which did a marvelous impression of a hole, in downtown, there lived a college hobbit..." I'm considering expanding on this as a possible LotR parody/fanfic. And, when suffering from severe lack of sleep and finally resorting to drinking coffee (ack!), I wrote down an extensive list of character and place names for "Lord of the Beans", a coffee-themed LotR parody.

I've named my rat Dr. Meriadoc Bramwell Livingston (Doc or Mr. Merry for short); my guide dog's in-harness personality is "Ida Gamgee"; and I'm currently researching the possibility of owning a cockatiel, which I plan on naming "Pippin". smilies/biggrin.gif (And I'd like to teach him to say "Fool of a Took" if I can. Anyone own a cockatiel or know of some good resources I might look at?)

My parents are v. worried
My ears are turning pointy!
I threw out all my normal clothes and kept the hobbit/elf/dwarf/etc. ones
I can walk like an elf
I can do archery v. accuratly.

i'm worried now!

I don't think I'm turning into an elf or hobbit (cause I'm not growing. At all.) but I knew I was obsessed with LOTR when I wrote a parody on it, with each of the character's writing a diary from their own perspective of the journy. It's pretty funny, everyone uses Pippin as a scapegoat and Merry has a PhD in psychology.

Count me in as chronically affected! smilies/biggrin.gif
1. I write in Tengwar, and am learnig both Elven tongues (Sindarin & Quenya).
2. I say the Lord's Prayer in Quenya as we are reciting it IN CHURCH!!!!
3. I initial my phone messages in Tengwar.
4. I have turned my model horse rider dolls into Elves. (I collect Breyer model horses as well).
5. I too talk as if Tolkien authored my words.
6. Given my horse, my 2 dogs, and my cat Elven names from the BD generator, and call them by those names.
smilies/eek.gif I do NOT want any professional help for my addiction!

Rosa Underhill

Yeah, avarerniliel, could you give us a link to your parody? I love reading that sort of stuff! (In all of mine, I tend to give Pip an BA in nonlinear dynamics, formerly known as chaos theory. I'm a die-hard "Jurassic Park" fan, what d'you expect?! smilies/biggrin.gif)

I've had severl Tolkien-esque dreams. (See the post "Dream" in this forum for the latest one.) I have a sudden urge to learn Finnish after watching the National Geographic documentary on LotR. I quote Tolkien all the time and am simply enraptured by what he says about "sub-creating". (He was good at it, naturally; why shouldn't it enlighten me when he talks about it?) smilies/biggrin.gif

No one's qualified enough to help me, so I'm quite happy to be addicted! smilies/biggrin.gif

1. I dress in Middle-Earth fashion. (Mostly Hobbits, Helps when you're short)
2. I read/write Elvish.
3. I carry a copy of the Fellowship with me everywhere.
4. My baby(my cat) is named Pippin.
5. I quote lines from the book.
6. I read out loud from the book in the car on long trips.

There's more, but I'm not going to list it. I knew I wasn't normal a long time ago. So. I like it this way.

You're obsessed (this one only applies to the movie, but don't worry I'm obsessed with the book as well) when you stand in Woolies Metro, trying to see through a non-transparent lolly bag to find a Legolas/Frodo card. I admit that a friend and I actually did this, much to the amusement and disgust of our friend Simon.

[Apart from the constant unintelligent babble, which have always suffered from,]
I'm not that bad! I mutter in Tolkien-eque style, mostly to myself, my friends at Bible Class call me a tree-hugger (they say i'm a hippie, but i think its closer to hobbit perhaps) and I really love flowers and plants, specially 'spider-plants', but apart from that...Oh yes, I have a lovely silver ring which is actually a celtic knot, but I think it's an Elven gift to some ancient hobbit family, really...it's not magic though. At least, not to my knowledge... smilies/smile.gif My Tolkienitis seems to be a very mild case.

I'm new here! I've recently become obsessed, went to see the movie, came home and ordered all three books. LOVED them! I'm going to order Hobbit and Silm this summer.

I want to start learning some Elvish, but I'm working on learning German which is for a grade so I GUESS that's a little more important. :-p
When I'm out riding I pretend there are Wraiths chasing me, or I just pretend I'm hunting down some Orc. Maybe when I learn some Elvish I can ride bareback with no bridle...hmm...
When I go to feed my bunnies out in the yard I run around barefoot and like an Elf.
I'm taking archery this summer!!
And of course there's more obsessive behavior. smilies/smile.gif

I am reading the books over and over again, compare myself with elves, hobbits.....
I write loads of stuff down about all the books and elves and hobbits and dwarfes and....u name it!

I don´t want any help for this, I consider this as normal, everyone else is weird... smilies/biggrin.gif

And I've finally decided to just call my math teacher Morgoth and my music teacher Elenriel (she's the BEST!)

uuuuuummm... and thats not obsessive? would be my brothers comment to this..

maybe it is, but not compared to most people in here.. ^_^

Welcome to the 'Downs, Nilaraniel!

I just found an elaborate, two-page comic I did explaining why the "bathsong at Crickhollow" scene wasn't in the movie. (It's not dirty but it involves a lot of towel snapping, a big bucket of water and an angry director. smilies/biggrin.gif)

I spend a considerable amount of time amusing myself by thinking up odd things about LotR. Ex: while my friend was trying to get a praking space at Wal-mart, I suddenly thought "Y'know, I can see Gollum and Bilbo getting into a spat about this. 'Nasty Bagginses! It took our space, precious, yes it did! We hates it! We hates 'til five o'clock this afternoon!'" And I have a desire to write and/or draw out my coffee-LotR parody "Lord of the Beans". (I was drawing little sketches of the Upper-Classman of the Beanwraiths today in Meteorology class. smilies/biggrin.gif)

No, no, I don't need help at all....

Hee hee, "Galadriator"! smilies/biggrin.gif

Nilaraniel...do you own a horse? When I'm out riding the cross-country course at my lessons, I often tell my horse to "Noro lim", which means "ride fast", and is what Arwen tells Asfaloth as they are being chased by the ringwraiths!
BTW, I own a Paint mare, her name is Aduuialiel in Elvish, Patches in English.

Sigh...I also wish I had more people around my area of the US to speak Elvish to. smilies/redface.gif (sigh)

And no, I still do not want any help. I am happy with my obsessed self! smilies/biggrin.gif

One more sign:

When your music teacher tells you to write a little song, and you can't help yourself, but have to write something Tolkien related (like doing some music to the Ring-poem).. And when you finds out she likes the LotR as well, you become really excited and starts coming up with elven names for her!

Unfortunately, my scanner died long before I could scan it, otherwise I would have sent it into the 'Downs for the comic contest. It needs re-drawing though; Pete Jackson is wearing sneakers in the first panel and we all know that just isn't right. smilies/smile.gif

One more thing: I've become obsessed with learning Soval Phare, erm, the Common Speech of Middle-earth. (Anyone can learn Elvish, but Soval Phare is hard to come by!) Sadly, there aren't enough words published to even say a complete sentence. smilies/frown.gif But I know some cool names now! It's a little late for this one, but for the previous topic, Thomas Crapper was also the author of an autobiography called "Flushed With Pride." Whether he meant it seriously or not is a secret that died with him, alas.

Being obsessed with LOTR...obsession kind of implies that you think about NOTHING else, which isn't the case, if nothing else my job puts paid to that. (Auto claims adjuster, fun, eh? Three thousand things that have to be done immediately, all the time). On the other hand, I have found myself occasionally thinking of lines from LOTR when working on a claim that goes bad (usually something along the lines of, "Ah, so you have chosen the way - of - pain!") The meaning is a little different, though, since in that case I'm experiencing quite as much pain as anyone else involved.

They just happened to come across a pink plastic pig in someones garden that they took, beat with the sticks, stuck it with a stick and then paraded around chanting the bashing, killing chant.
Wow something was wrong with those kids...

My school books are covered in Tengwar! Honestly, someone I have never spoken to before walked over to me a couple of weeks ago and said "Are you the girl who believes in hobbits?" I was like, omg, people are starting to know me for that! I'm also known as "The Crazy Lord Of The Rings Fan"

I was saving up for an MP3 player but my need to join the fan club was too great. Oh, well. I've been learning Sindarin. Actually, I was doing a Spanish exam on 'My City' and I couldn't stop thinking of Boromir. I actually ended up writing Gondor instead of Glasgow.
