Hobbits vs. Elves. Who's your favourite race?

Okay, we've got elves, hobbits, men, orcs, ents, goblins, dwarves, trolls, etc. And Barrow Wights, of course!
I just want to know who you like best and why. That's all.
I'm a hobbit person myself. That's mainly because I'm a hobbit. You would be wise not to argue that pint.....I mean point.
My most moderately abject apologies if there is already a thread like this one.

Hobbits strike me as the happy medium for most people, so I like them a lot, but I'm more of a human/elf person. It really depends who we're talking about, now that I think about it. If we aren't speaking about specific characters, probably:

1. Men
2. Elves
3. Hobbits

Elves. I don't think I could handle being short and well, 'stocky'. And I'd rather live in a tree or Rivendell than a Hobbit hole, though both are much cooler than what I've got now. Hobbit's are a bit too incurious for my personality too. With exceptions of course. What about dwarves? Can't say I care for them personally (most of us Elves don't) but I'm sure some people do. Where's Gimli and some of the other bearded folk?

I personally would prefer to be an elf than any other being in Middle Earth.

They are so talented in the arts, are good in battle, and possesses mystical powers.

Plus, Tolkien used Christianity as basis in his creation of the Elven race. And being a Christian myself. I think the Elves parallel or at least exemplify some Christian ideals.

Well, it all boils down to a simple question: do you tend more to your physical body - eating, drinking and being Merry (Ai - I made a pun! smilies/tongue.gif ) or to your spiritual being: meditation, poetry, intellectual activities.
I for one have my elvish periods but also my hobbit moments (when I am shamelessly gaining pounds...But hey, in SHire standards, pounds = beauty! Now that is an encouraging thought. The only problem is that I'm not in the Shire smilies/frown.gif

In the movie I liked goblins most. They are just cute little bastards.
And I really liked the scene where they swarmed over pillars and ceiling. Reminded me of the Alien-movies, which I am a fan of.

In the book hobbits are my favorite, they are a likeable people, although I don`t think I am very much like them.
Elves are much too perfect for me, besides they appeard to me to be arrogant towards the mortal people.

Like someone said - Elves are just too...too...perfect! I LOVE hobbits, mostly cause Pippin is a hobbit and i love him, but that's not the point. Hobbits are so innocent and cute and funny! If it wasn't for Merry and Pippin the books would be all action - i like how those two add comedy.

I would have to say elves for their beautiful and meloncholic language, history and culture. (And I've noticed lately, I'm obsessed over pointy ears! O_o) After the elves would come the ents. Well Merry, I really like all the races, but if I had to pick one...it would be the Hobbits. Their simple lifes, love of conversation and history, devotion to each other, and their demeaner are all part of the reasons why I'd pick them. I don't know who I like the best, but here's my list in no specific order.

Hobbits~ They're all so peaceful and hungry, but I like the Tooks the best!

Men~ Mainly the Numeareans(?) Because they're Elf-friends and the rest of the Men are so power-hungry and all!

Elves~ The Elves are always so calm and serene, but they're also strong.

Ents~ As they would say, Ents are not, hoom, hasty folk. But when they're threatened, they take action!

Nazgul~ I think I like the Nazgul the most. I mean, they're neither living or dead, and they have this ability to make most everyone so scared. They are sooo cool!! smilies/evil.gif smilies/evil.gif

Dwarves, of course. I mean, I'll admit that elves are pretty cool sometimes, and Hobbits are fun--ah for the care-free and rustic life of a Hobbit--but in the end, the Dwarves are the best. i must stick up for my dwarven ancestry and say dwarves had special powers too! they were resistant to the powers of the Dwarven Rings inasmuch as they didn't get corrupted, just super-greedy, and they built powerful fortresses that were near-insurmountable to assault from without. with moria, it was assault from within that killed them.

MY answer is- hobbits. As a matter of fact, I would like to be a hobbit. Simply because they are the happiest folks in Middle-earth. Sure, elves are beautiful and long-lasting, and wizards are wise but who cares about those things when you can be blissfully happy your entire life? No one can knock a hobbit down. They can undergo trauma and torture and still come out on top. Very resilient, they are. They may be very very small in stature but their capacity for happiness is immense. And that is something to be desired, in my opinion. Excessive happiness- that is their biggest weapon. For who can harm or mock you when you are very very happy?… really?

I think it would be fair to say both hobbits and elves, for their different character aspect focus. Hobbits for the earthy harmony and elves for the spiritual harmony they display. I think, though, if I were a hobbit, I would have to be Tookish, for I could not settle into routine without a fight! I always admired the tendency of the Tooks to be self-sufficient and sort of apart from the silliness that went on in the main Hobbit culture. (And I'd probably follow Pippin around everywhere, getting into lots of trouble!) smilies/wink.gif

And were I an Elf, I couldn't decide which group I'd be! Probably Noldor or Sindar, though, since I couldn't stay put in Aman for too long! Let's face it; I'd probably follow Maedhros or Finrod around everywhere...could be hazardous to my health to be around Elves in the First Age... smilies/eek.gif Just as well it is the Seventh Age, or some such thing, and I just speculate on it!

i find that every one puts a lot of thought into this question and i can see that, but for me i think that this is an easy question.

i would definitly say i would be and elf. yep. no doubt about it. i mean i live for ever, can see things far away, can shoot thing far away (not to mention have a never ending quiverful of arrows like Legolas in the movies ;) ), hack things to pieces, as well as being renowned for my wisdom, and way with nature, stuff like that.

so there you have it. another one for the elves. some one should take a tally and see whos is winning in this "race" race. wow that was really...corny... o well some may think it funny.

Desipite my user name, Hobbits are my favorite race. They are wonderfully happy and simple. I am most definitetly a Hobbit. I'm short with curly hair. I love to eat, and I have a large extended family who also loves to eat. I flatter myself that I am a happy, simple person myself. I even live in a valley with lots of green hills, and have lived here almost my whole life.
Granted, I do have a bit of Elvishness in me at times, and I love "Elvish" like music (hense the name) and language, but Hobbits are still my favorite.

OHHH!! I totally agree with Orlandoscowgal!!! Anyway, elves have little blue auras and they shine! elves are tall so i am not taller than the males and they have such a captivating culture. Another pro is that they're immortal. That's always good... except for the fact that they can die in battle... making it a bigger loss since elves aren't supposed to die.....
Anyway, elves can sing way better than hobbits can... or at least better than Samwise... Elves are also not chubby or fat like hobbits, they are always (or should be..) very fit... Elves are also more aware of the world and have more knowledge (that goes past family trees!) and they also can forsake immortality...which i think is really sad...
Oh yeah!!! they are also the only (with a few exceptions...) race that can leave to go to the undying lands!!

Elves, sometimes I can be like a Elf, but there is nothing wrong with the Hobbits, they are funnny, but too curious for me. On one hand I think it is too hard to compare these two races, they are both so unique. It's like comparing Tolkien with Harry Potter. They're like two different entities.

The Elves... specifically because they represent everything use humans would want to be.. immortal, wise, beautiful...

So I think the Hobbits are very interesting and unique, and seem to have more fun, but then the Elves are beautiful and elegant which are both very good qualities as well.

So after all that I have come to the conclusion that I am indecisive, rather that one or the other is better. Yay for my contribution! :rolleyes:

i think that Elves are "cooler" in my Opinion,they have better skills in combat then hobbits and they are immortal, but since Frodo did destroy the ring...i think its kinda of a draw.

I'm a bit torn between Elves and Hobbits. I always associate a sort of melancholic nature with the Elves though (the burden of immortality and the whole lot). So maybe there is much happiness to be had in ignorance! Being an eternal city girl, I see something very attractive in the Hobbits' quaint and simple way of life.

But as long as we're playing hypotheticals, if I had my way I would definitely be a wizard!

As my name suggests, I should probably say the race of Men was the best. Actually, the man I really like is Aragorn. Other than that, Elves are the best. They can fight cool, have "powers" and stuff like that. Hobbits I never really found interesting. Sometimes they are just plain annoying. :eek:

But apart kidding, what's the point of comparing at all? They don't seem to have much in the way of each other, elves and hobbits. I like them both in their ways :).

If the question is where would I like to live - with hobbits or with elves, I'd say here, there, peridically. But in Rivendell (tra-la-lally type of, I mean, can't bear too much austerity in one go ;), not other location. And in Shire, by Brandywine. I mean, I like boating, and I like mushrooms. Dunno bout beer, haven't tasted it yet, but I suppose I will like it too.

I like elves but they seem flawless. I think I like flawed creatures like dwarves ( they are greedy) and men (coz they lust and want power and stuff) and hobbits coz they are so darn cute!!! :D

I like hobbits. I love their simplicity and good-natured dispositions. Their love of land and food. But I would want to be like Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin because they are hobbits but they have been out in the world and have a knowledge and appreciation of other races and cultures.

Elves are cool,mysterious and powerful and they have great history so I really love stories about them.But hobbits know how to have great time so I usualy play hobbit in rpgs.
But I think you can't compare those two races because elves are more quiet and ancient,while hobbits are loud and more like children.
