I have a friend that lived in San Jose, CA and she lived in an area that was named after LOTR characters!!

How funny is that!! Shows how much influence the books have on society.

Here is the link since I dunno if I can get the map image to show:

MAP!!!!!!!!!!!!! (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&newFL=Use+Address+Below&addr=3000+alvernaz&csz=san+jose+ca&Country=us&Get%A0Map=Get+Map)

This is a list of some of the streets in that area:

Bilbo Ct.
Brandybuck Way
Theoden Ct.
Isengard Ct.
Angmar Ct.
Eldamar Ct.

And some others I am not 100% sure are from LOTR....

I've always wanted the opportunity to name a street, and if I did, I would also name it after LotR characters. Hey, if anyone else could name a street after something LotR-related, what would it be called? I would probably call something Helm's Deep, or maybe Pellanor Fields.

I don't think I'd want to live on Angmar Ct., though! smilies/smile.gif (that's one of the streets)

That's pretty cool. Check out the picture at the bottom of this screen. Its a real street sign in Thenamir's neighborhood.

There is an edition with Lorien Way and a bunch of other stuff. I'll get a scan of a map pretty soon.

Well, there's more.
Shadowfax Drive
Bilbo Drive
Anborn Road
Brandywine Drive
Umbarger Rd (comes from Umbar)
Woodelf Dr
Barrow Ct
Anbor Square

BTW, we have a section in our town named after Robin Hood.

Barrow Court"??? Do those poor people know what a "barrow" is? It's like saying you live on Mausoleum Drive! smilies/eek.gif

I'm not sure if there are any in my neighborhood, although... I don't live in this one city close by, but I've been there. In that city, there are a bunch of streets named after LOTR in one area. I didn't realize that until I read the book, though. (I read it all the time. LOTR rules!) The neighborhood is kinda trashy, mostly run down looking condos, but they have those names... It's kinda cool.

Wow! That is WAY COOL!!! None of the streets in my little town are have cool names, they are all named after explorers (champlain), or scientests (brockhouse), and we have like, two tree names.(Birch, Poplar) Oh well! Cool map! smilies/smile.gif

I'm planning on visiting that area in August for a party, so I will try to take pictures and post them here. smilies/smile.gif I wouldn't want to live on Bilbo Ct. because the name, to the uninitiated, sounds a bit dirty. hehe... But Lorien and Rivendell would make pretty street names. Yeah, you have to wonder what the planners of that neighborhood were thinking! It's nice to know that Tolkien's work has permeated so much of society, though.

Ummm yeah, i don;t know any street names, but this one skiing place in Michigan that I go to has skiing runs with LotR names. The Greenway is an easy. Bag Shot Row is Medium. Upper and Lower Longbottoms are the two longest and my favorite runs at medium as well. The two hard or blck diamond hills are White Downs and Sunlending. Its the coolest place.

Well recently I was driving out in the country and came across a sign that read "Welling Hall". I know it's not a street name, but still. What was funny was that behind the sign, there was nothing but trees.

I must say, I was tempted to stop and say hi to Treebeard. smilies/smile.gif

Endor is another name for Middle Earth.
Oh, and if I could name any street after LOTR, I would definitely have Lothiriel Lane, in memory of yet another mostly neglected female character. smilies/wink.gif

Im glad someone made this post....cause it gives me the excuse to tell everyone that I named the road i live on Rivendell Rd. My father left me some land in his will and when I built my home there I realized as I was paving the cement walk up to my home that I needed to name the small road that goes up into my property. I named it Rivendell because of the nice wooded area around it. I was going to name if Mirkwood Ln but theres this pretty water spring below my property that glows at night when the moon hits it right...reminded me of Rivendell...so walla..Rivendell it was and Rivendell it always will be...=)

Thanks....I thought it was a pretty good idea myself when I named it...=) The whole area has the feel of Rivendell..its peaceful and thats really why i named it that....but thanks for liking it....im glad someone does, my family hates the name....I wouldnt of named it anything else..it just fits...

Really?! What part?

Samwise
07-01-2002, 11:24 PM
Actually, Burrahobbit, yes it is. Technically, a moon. It's the place where the Ewoks lived. (Empire Strikes Back). Hm. Where does George Lucas get his inspiration??
smilies/tongue.gif
"There are some, even in these parts, as know the Fair Folk and get news of them." he said. "There's Mr. Baggins, now, that I work for. He told me that they were sailing and he knows a bit about Elves. And old Mr. Bilbo knew more: many's the talk I had with him when I was a little lad. "

burrahobbit: Oh. That's not a part of the city I'm very familiar with. I don't get down there very often anyway.

Samwise: It's actually Return of the Jedi not Empire Strikes Back. And good ole' George has admitted on more than one occasion that he drew inspiration from LOTR. smilies/wink.gif

Today I saw a commercial on The History Channel for the edition that I posted above. It is called Rivendell and looks like it might be some sort of gated community. The footage was very pretty.

I do also keep telling my friend who'se obsessed with star wars that George took many things from Tolkien. She doesn't believe me.
I think it would be soooooo cool to live on a street named like that. What would be even better, though, would be if a whole town was.
Actually, there are! (i have to stop talking to myself)
My grandfather used to work on a farm near Underhill, Vermont. And there is a Buckland in Quebec, Canada and somewhere in Australia.

Yay! I found one! A street near my Star Wars-loving friend's house (eerie coincidence) is called ITHILIEN! yippee!

Not yay! I just looked in the phonebook to find that two evil LotR and me-hating evil evil evil people live in/on Ithilien!!!

Probably got in by disguising their hideous orc-shapes with masks and cloaks, or black robes on black horses.............

Many thanks to the Barrow Wight for posting them so quickly. There are several more streets I didn't get pictures of (people were looking at me funny) so I will go back soon. I missed Bilbo Ct., Shadowfax Dr., and some others.

Yeah, Barrow Downs Way is in a neighborhood in South Houston (near the old Ellington AFB). No other Tolkien names in the area, but there are a bunch of English sounding street names nearby (i.e. Wessex, Kensington, etc...). No Middle Earth names in my neighborhood smilies/frown.gif

About two miles from my home is a street named Tolkien Way.

I was disapointed to learn that it's not named after JRRT. It's named for his son, Father John Tolkien, who spent most of his working life as a priest and teacher in my area.

Bęthberry
10-29-2002, 09:38 AM
Actually, Selmo, I think there is something quite fitting and proper about Tolkien Way being named for Father John Tolkien. And I am willing to bet that even JRR would bow to it. An honour for Sam rather than Frodo?
