Hello!

I have a rather specific question about Gandalf and the one ring, and, since I have not finished the books yet, was wondering if someone could help me out.

What I'm wondering is, can Gandalf touch the ring? Someone told me he can't, but I wasn't sure if they meant that he can't can't, or just reeeeeally doesn't want to. Also, if he can't, what's stopping him?

Thanks!

Oh, sure he could touch it, if he wanted to. He just chooses not to because he doesn't want to be drawn to its power.

And he did touch the Ring, when he threw it into the fire in Frodo's hole. Nothing wrong happened.

Actually, he swatted the envelope that contained the ring into the fire. He never actually touched the ring itself.

DarkRose, the envelope is only in the movie. In the book, Frodo keeps it on a chain in his pocket. Gandalf does hold the ring before throwing it into the fire and again after removing it. He then hands it to Frodo and does not touch it again as far as I know.

Oh, my mistake. smilies/smile.gif
I keep getting what happens in the book and what happens in the movie mixed up. smilies/tongue.gif
