View Full Version : Who's your fav. character?

My fav. character is Tom Bombadil is anyone else mad about him not being in the movie??!!

I too was disappointed with his absence. I do understand somewhat the reason. A lot of people saw the movie without reading the book. The general audience would not have understood his role, and if you look at some of the topics lately, neither do we. He is absolutely one of the most debated characters in Tolkien's work. I think the scenes with him would have been lost on the 'non-reading' audience.

I would have liked to have seen what Peter Jackson could do with him (and Goldberry).

Welcome to the 'Downs! I hope you enjoy it here! smilies/wink.gif

Well, Vinyacairwen, you're lucky, cos you can't really leave any of them out! This isn't to do with favourite characters (I don't really have one) but they never go given lembas in the film, so what are they going to live on? Sam and Frodo won't ever get to Mount Doom, they'll starve on the way!

Vinyacairwen
04-03-2002, 05:26 PM
Maybe they /did/ get lembas...for instance, I don't think they ever mentioned (in the movie) that Sam's beloved pony was named Bill until they had to let them go...maybe it would be like for the lembas..? Like they just suddenly have it... :\
But if they don't,, I could understand some reasons why Peter Jackson wouldn't include it.
Just when /I/ think of lembas, I think of 'healing potions' and things from PS games, so...it's kinna funny O.o.

My favourite character was Pippin and Merry, so I wasnt annoyed, becasue they couldnt exactly not put them in.

I was thinking about the Lembas thing. How are they going to introduce them in if they didnt show them giving them to them.

I would of loved for them to try and portray Tom Bombadil

smilies/biggrin.gif your right Pippen and Merry are quite stupid but your going to need a little humor in a movie like this one. Anywho who else thinks Borimir was a little DRAB?

::back to the lembas thing:: But they never really mentioned the pony's name was Bill 'til the end, either smilies/smile.gif.

smilies/tongue.gif I thought Aragon Legolas and Frodo were cute especially Aragon. It is to bad that they left Tom Bombadil out but I guess when u have a certain amount of film u can't really add stuff. Pippin and Merry were stupid but thats what made it funny. And now that u people mention it they didn't show the lembas or them getting gifts which sucked bt hey.

I don't remember this in the movie, but in the FOTR trailer (which I watch a lot.. ::heheh: smilies/smile.gif, they show some Elves of the Lorien (excuse my lack of accent marks) looking very ceremoniel stepping up to each of the Fellowship. You don't really get a good view, but maybe they were giving them gifts :\..? Mm.

My favorite character in the book is Tom Bombadil. It didn't bother me that PJ decided to cut him out though. It's reasonable considering the many things he would of had to explained for film goers to understand the character, which would have made the film even longer. smilies/smile.gif

I really like Glorfindel, and in some ways it's bothering me that Arwen took over his part. It wasn't made for her. But anyway, I can't really say that I have a fave character. I like all of them for being who they are. But I guess I have a weakness for the Nazgûl. They're sweet. smilies/wink.gif

My favourite character is Pippin! I love Pippin!
Apparently PJ was going to have the hobbits going through a wood and hearing Tom singing and seeing his hat in the trees, then the hobbits running away, just to acknowledge Tom bombadil for the people who ahd read the books, but there wasn't time for him smilies/frown.gif

Hmmmmmmm....... Already posted to a question of this sort once.... BUt I'll do it again.... and again..... and again.... smilies/rolleyes.gif

From the books....... My #1 favorite character all around, books 1-3 & movie is Pippin. Gandalf the Grey would not have become Gandalf the White if Pippin hadn't been the curious little fart he is and tossed the rock down the well. And no Gandalf the White, the whole army of Rohan is, well, screwed. Maybe even the armies of Gondor, also.

BUT... BOROMIR IS NOT DRAB! Boromir is awesome! If he hadn't have come along, Frodo and Sam probably wouldn't have made the choice to leave alone as quickly, and then where would the story be??? Besides, he is the most human of the whole story! And then his brother, Faramir... I can't wait to see PJ's Boro/Faramir flashbacks....

Greetings all!
I identify with Gimli the best! I'm re-reading the story yet again (haven't in eight years or so, t'was about time!) and I find myself broad of smile when Gimli graces the page. That steadfast proud Dwarf is a pillar (stump?) of constitution and his friendship with Legolas is admirable.
I haven't yet seen the movie (long story) so I still share Tolkien's image of the characters as he portrays them. I don't really know if I want to soil my mind with Jackson's imagery. smilies/cool.gif

Yes: this question has been posted many, many, many, many (many, many, many, many...) times, but...it is becoming a Goldie Oldie!

Do you mean FotR or LotR orTolkien in general?

Well: in FotR, my favorite character is Goldberry...oh: and Bill the Pony

In LotR I like Legolas (he wasn't much in the 1st book, but...I like him in the 2nd and 3rd books) and I like Eowyn.

In The Sil (I'm about 4/5 through it now), so far I like Emeldir, Melian, Luthien, and Huan (gotta love talking hounds! I love Huan so much!)

Several in this thread have said Pippin or Merry are "stupid". No, no, no!

They were young and inexperienced, sometimes impetuous, and had not been exposed to a lot of things outside the Shire, but they certainly weren't stupid.

Just look at the way they handled their situation when they were captured by the Orcs, and in the scenes immediately thereafter. They kept their heads and did a lot of things which increased their likelihood of survival.

Also, note how both of them fared later in the book when they pledged their servce, Merry to Theoden and Pippin to Denethor. They showed bravery and insight. Without Pippin, Faramir might have been killed, and, without Merry, the Lord of the Nazgul would not have been slain.

Sam had a natural sense of what it meant to serve because of his situation in life. Merry and Pippin had to learn this step-by-step along the way, since, as the sons of wealty families, they had far less experience in this regard. But they proved very able learners.

Also, look at the leadership role they both took in the Scouring of the Shire. Frodo was too hurt to act as a leader here, so Merry and Pippin took on the job. Moreover, Gandalf was able to let the hobbits go their own way, precisely because he knew they had grown enough to handle things on their own.

Sure they made some goofs along the way, but who doesn't?

So, no way were they "stupid". Anyways, Frodo is my favorite character, and no way does he chose friends who would be stupid!!!! Especially since he was fairly reserved and picky about this friends (at least this comes over in the book).

I enjoyed the fact in the books that Merry and Pippin started out as fun-loving young hobbits with all the characteristics of youngsters, who we then get to see mature into really good representatives of their community.

My favorite character, the one I wanted to know a little more back-story on, was Gildor Inglorion, the leader of the Wandering Company of elves.

Oh yeah, Child!! I am right there with you! Without Merry and Pippin, everything would have all messed up. {Not mentioning the thing w/ the Palantir right now or nothing} smilies/wink.gif . But still. 2 great people's lives were saved because of them. I mean, all of you who love Eowen so much, well, thank Merry! She would have died without him. So no way would these hobbits be considered "stupid". They were very brave and unstupid in fact.

But anyway, I'm getting off that subject. smilies/biggrin.gif Go Pippin!! smilies/smile.gif smilies/tongue.gif

I love all the hobbits, but my absolute fav character is Sam. He is so loyal and brave! My fav part in the book is his big moment fighting Shelob. I also think Sam was more of the comic relief in the books. He says all these funny little comments!

My favorite female character is Eowyn. She's the only female character in the books that actually does any fighting and is willing to disguise herself to do so. She had a lot of courage to face the witch king like she did.

well, and my total favorite is quite different from most of the mentioned. firstly, he isn't from Lord of the Rings, but from Silmarillion and other lore of the elder days. secondly, he isn't mostly considered a good-doer.
I mean Turin Turambar.
I appreciate him for his strong and unusual personality, for his fatal fight with the doom, for him not being an angel [which Gandalf sometimes annoyingly resembles], but simply, a man with all the "+" and "-". well, he tried to do the best he could, everything just turned wrong.
besides, I somehow prefer the "losers"..
and if from LoTR, Gollum then..

Tom Bombadil was a weird, psychotic fellow, and I liked him immensely.

Eowyn did exactly what I was hoping she would do, so I remember what she did when I come to an uncertain fork in the road and it helps.

Gandalf is my involuntary role model, but I don't care for him much.

Pippin and Merry are hilarious, but maybe a little shallow-minded until the end.

Frodo is overlooked because he did the hugest and most desperately self-sacrificial act of all. I believe that he's the "best" because of his true depth and beauty of character and because of what he suffered even after the trial had passed.

Boromir is my favourite.
It's the ordinary 'stock' characters like Aragorn, Arwen and Gandalf that everyone loves and cheers for, but it's the characters like Boromir and Gollum which give the LOTR it's real emotional depths. They are both flawed characters - Gollum is driven mad by greed, Boromir is so incensed by the slaughter of his people that he does not think of the consequences of his action - they are complex, with both flaws and virtues - just like all people.

I find few who can enjoy the charecter of Gimli, the dwarf as much as I do. He's rambunctious, he is an awesome fighter and he's like a fuzzy teddy bear weilding an axe that you wanna put on a shelf and enjoy for years. I dislike in the movie they make him to seem a bad guy, not bad bad, yet they make him seem foolish. At first yes he is, but the Lady of the Wood changes all of this and he becomes a gentlemen---er gentledwarf.

Guinevere
07-01-2002, 03:30 PM
I agree, in the books Gimli is much more sympathetic than in the movie! They left out those scenes in Lothlorien that make him change his mind about elves. I find it rather touching how he adores Galadriel and how he and Legolas become such good friends.

But my very favourite character in the book is definitely Sam. None of the other characters reveal so much of their thoughts and feelings and "inner debates" to the reader as Sam. That`s why I can really share his emotions. His faithful, devoted love for Frodo is for me one of the most touching things. The tears rise in my eyes every time I read "the choices of Master Samwise". Sam is so humble and yet so brave. He doesn`t trust his own judgement, but instinctively he always does the right thing. (I wonder how (and if) they are going to show this in TTT movie! )

The more I read LotR, the better I also like Frodo. But I kind of see him through Sam`s eyes. He is a very complex character, and you can only guess what`s going on inside him.

I also like Faramir very much. He is noble and valiant and wise, yet more human than Aragorn.

My favorite character is......TREEBEARD. I am hoping that he won't look so computerized in the movie. When I saw the TTT trailer I was alittle worried about it...he looked somewhat computerized and more like a tree. From any description of him that I've ever heard he's said to look like a man/tree. Maybe my eyes were just playing tricks on me as I was watching the trailer....I'm sure I wont be disappointed when I see him.....

I can't even tell exactly why, but he is

Actually I understand perfectly why Tom Bombadil was not put in the movie.I did emensely enjoy the chapter in the book referring to him and thought him to be a very funny and sort of foolish character, but what did he ultimately have to do with the rest of the story-line? Peter Jackson's main purpose when making this movie was to focus upon the destruction of the One Ring, and quite frankly I do not see what Bombadil,Goldberry, and Old Man Willow have to do with that.

Oh, yes almost forgot my favorite character would have to be Gandalf the Grey and White and Saruman the White.

Túrin Túrambar, Húrin Thalion or Fëanor. Túrin and Húrin because they are simply so tragic and yet brave characters, and Fëanor because he is an Elven Lord, but not a pure good one like Glorfindel or Ecthelion. He's not completely good, nor completely evil. Probably it's Túrin, though.

Overall though my favorite charector is Aragorn, because i like the way his charector develops as at first hes a mysteriouse Ranger that trvels the woods and in the end hr turns out to be the heir of Isildur and king to the throne of Gondor.

I think my favorite chars would be Faramir and Eowyn. I cant just pick one over the other! hehe smilies/smile.gif
Faramir was very noble and loyal. Eowyn was tough and she knew she should be treated as an equal and not get special treatment just because she is a woman. smilies/smile.gif

Oh, I have alot of 'favourite' characters...among the most prominent are:
Sam- his good humour, folksy charm, loyalty, and courage is endearing and inspiring.
Tom Bombadil- I can't explain other than to say that I like him because he's Tom Bombadil and an incredibly interesting character
Merry and Pippin- I love the way they really come into their own and find their niches in the story.
That's all for now...
Peace

Actually I think I have already written this somewhere but since I could not find where I could repeat meself and write t6hat my favorite characters are Merry and Pippin for I like charecters with charecter . Sounds stupid doesn't it ? But really they have a sence of humor and they are not overcomed by the war that's upon them .
Eowyn's ok too . A lad with an attitude smilies/wink.gif
And actually hobbits rule ! smilies/biggrin.gif

My favorite characters are Pippin, Faramir and Boromir.

I like Faramir and Boromir because, to my eyes, they are rather sad characters. When Boromir died I was very upset. He was not a bad man, I really liked his character (*so* not dull!) Faramir has gone through so many hardships, his brother, father and mother dying, but then he gets Eowyn so he has a rather more happy ending. I think the story of Boromir is quite tragic.

And I like Pippin because he is light hearted and can extract humor from any situation. I don't think he's stupid at all, he is actually pretty intelligent. A little foolish some times, but it's just because he's young. Not stupid though.

I really like Glorfindel and ARAGORN I think it was unfair to give Arwen such a big part of the story smilies/tongue.gif

I love Sam. He embodies all the hobbits best qualities. He isn't stagnant, but learns and grows throughout the story. The Sam who hid in the bushes listening under Frodos window could never have become mayor of Hobbiton without his growth experiences through his quest with Frodo.

I also love Cirdan the shipbuilder. He was willing to surrender his ring of power to Gandalf. He remains in Middle Earth when all the other elves are leaving, faithful to what he believes even when it isn't following the crowd.

My favorite male character is Legolas Greenleaf, female character Arwen Undomiel. I do, however, wish that they had more lines in the films even if they didn't in the books.

You mean I have to choose between them?? smilies/eek.gif Well, I'll try...

Sam: I would go through now and give you a 5-paragraph-long reason why, but by the looks of it, plenty of you know where I'm coming from on this one so why bother?

Boromir: His character is amazingly complex. I love reading over his parts in the books for hours, just trying to understand what's going through his mind.

Denethor: I think he's hillarious. So dramatic, so pessimistic, so sure everyone's going to die. You just have too take a comical look at Denethor at least once while reading the books. I mean, look at his dialogue!
"Go now, and die in what ways seems best to you." (RotK, The Siege of Gondor)
And saying that to a young hobbit no less! That's just gold right there, man. True, it's terribly tragic what happened to him, but it's still strangly amusing to hear him talk.

Théoden: I personally think he's one of the best examples of kingliness in the whole book. He's just so strong and compassionate, with only the best for his people in mind. His story is very touching.

Wow, it's great seeing so many Samwise fans. smilies/smile.gif

Sam is my all-time favorite literary character. He's like the quinessential hobbit - sensible, funny, and a lover of the garden. And brave... I was blown away when I read Shelob's Lair. To some, the idea of one little hobbit running at a giant spider would seem laughable, but it doesn't come off that way at all when you actually read it. And The Tower of Cirith Ungol almost had me in tears... his unwavering loyalty to his master and friend, and that hope that he always seems to possess makes me believe he's the kind of person we should all strive to be like.

Also, Sam's the perfect case of not judging a book by its cover. It's hard to imagine a hobbit gardener (who occasionally comes off as a bit dim) somewhere in the depths of Mordor, at times the only hope for Frodo, the main protagonast of the story. He's a lot smarter than he seems at first, and a whole lot braver. He's also a bit of a poet, which is probably one of the reasons why I love him so much... I'm a sucker for poets. smilies/tongue.gif

I don't think much of that made any sense, but I find it difficult to put in words how I feel about characters and stories that I really love. So to sum up - Sam's great. smilies/wink.gif

I also really love Faramir. Noble, wise, a real gentleman, in my opinion. smilies/wink.gif I had such admiration for him in TTT, and when I read The Steward and the King, I fell in love with him right along with Éowyn.

Speaking of Éowyn, she's another one of my favorite characters. Cold, beautiful, and sad... to me, she's one of those characters who you can't help but feel for, and who you hope everything works out for. Plus she's got one of my favorite lines: "But no living man am I!" Her and Merry's battle with the Nazgûl King was one of the most powerful parts of the books for me.

And people will probably think I'm weird for saying this, but I just love Bill the pony for some reason. smilies/tongue.gif

Théoden: I personally think he's one of the best examples of kingliness in the whole book. He's just so strong and compassionate, with only the best for his people in mind. His story is very touching.

Wonderfully put. Théoden is an amazing character, for all of the reasons you stated. smilies/smile.gif

<----Beren.

He kinda lived his life along the lines of "all you need is love." I can relate to that very well.

Favorite Characters:

* Sam: his loyalty, devotion and love towards Frodo makes him one of the best characters.

* Eowyn: her personality is unique.

* Faramir: the difference between his character and Boromir's is amazing, so why did I choose Faramir? Because Faramir is wise and yet unwise, and I don't like Boromir's arrogance.

* Bilbo: no explanation needed her.

* Tom Bombadil: no explanation needed either, though I think I like Goldberry even better.

From the Silmarillion I don't, have to read it once more I guess smilies/wink.gif

Gandalf is also a good character, The White and the Grey, for he makes the statement: 'do not meddle in the affairs of wizards for the are subtle and quick to anger', quite real.

Legolas and Aragorn are by far my favorite.

I mean... how can you get any cooler? (In both books and movies.) But than again... I love the Elves, and I consider the Hobbits and Dwarves for the most part highly annoying. (Pippin is pretty funny though.) smilies/smile.gif

Ah, well... you won't tell me anything that I haven't already heard from my little sister about how cool the Hobbits are...
