View Full Version : Which LotR character reminds you most of yourself - and why?

I was just thinking about which LotR character reminded me most of myself. It took a lot of thought but I think I've settled on Merry. Me and my best friend remind me very much of Merry and Pippin. I was just hoping to maybe spark some other people's interests into thinking about which character is most akin to them. So, which LotR character do you find yourself to be most like? smilies/biggrin.gif

I've done some thinking on this subject myself. I believe that I am most like Sam. I've taken five LOTR personality tests which say I'm most like Sam. Not only that, but my best friend says I'm a lot like Sam. and I trust her. And I would say the same by personal evaluation. So my answer is my favorite character: Sam. smilies/biggrin.gif

I'm thinking Bilbo. He liked everything nice and pat, but got caught up in the excitement of the dwarf business easily enough. I'm like that too...I like to keep things nice and easy, orderly and comfortable, yet....I'll get a wild hair and do something really bold from time to time. I also relate to the way Bilbo handled the "stand off" between Thorin and the Elven king over the dragon's horde. Bilbo got fed up, and just used plain common sense, delivering the arkenstone to "make the peace". He's a jolly good fellow!

Well, the BD Personality Test came up with Barliman Butterbur for me, which kind of makes sense ... smilies/wink.gif
Actually the character that I identify most with is Bilbo. Probably because The Hobbit, and Bilbo in particular, made such an impression on me when I first read it at the age of 9 or 10. I would be quite happy sitting in a nice, warm, comfortable hobbit hole with a well-stocked pantry, a few bottles of good wine and a full pouch of pipeweed. There are times when something out of the ordinary seems quite enticing, although I am sure that if I were on an adventure such as that which Bilbo undertakes, I would, like him, frequently wish myself back in my nice little hobbit-hole. smilies/smile.gif

On the BD personality test, when I try to test as Gandalf, I end up testing as Frodo. When I take the test honestly, I end up testing as Gandalf! smilies/smile.gif

I've taken about . . . oh, I don't know, 20 personality tests and on almost every one I have gotten Aragorn. I think I am a lot like him in several ways, and I am very determined, which is also one of his biggest qualities. But I'm more like the movie Aragorn than the book Aragorn, who seems so perfect to me. The movie Aragorn isn't quite so perfect. And I definitely am not perfect, lol smilies/biggrin.gif. But I often have found many parts of me that seem a lot like many of the different characters. I'm kind of a mix. smilies/tongue.gif

I'm like Éowyn or Boromir (I would say Faramir, but then you'd think that I love myself and that's just... no....). I don't like "cages" or stereotypes and I've got issues (who doesn't, right?).

I almost always come out with either Merry, Pippin, or Boromir in Personality tests. Every once in a while, one of them suprises me with something very offbeat like Tom Bombadil, but usually I can know what to expect. smilies/smile.gif

After reading the books AND taking a bunch of persoanlity tests including the BD one I have decided I'm most like Frodo. I always talk about how i want to get out of my small town but I know once I do i wil miss it. And i have a tendancy to be antisocial and abnormally melancholy smilies/tongue.gif And also a bunch of other reasons but I'm not gonna say them Because i get the strong feeling no one cares... smilies/wink.gif

Frodo or Faramir for me. Not that I've done anything great but I think if a huge responsibility was placed on me I think I could be up to it.
Also I am very thoughtful and usually know when to speak and when to keep my mouth shut.

I think I'm most like Pippin. He's the youngest of the bunch and he kind of acts childish at times and he's very curious. He seems to try to lighten the mood if things aren't going too well, and I think that's like me.

I've taken probably about 20 or 25 of those personality test things, and for almost every single one I turn up as Legolas or Aragorn. I think that they are both very accurate. I'm like Legolas in that I enjoy archery, have keen hearing (not in the eyesight departent though... glasses... evil things...), am more of a loner, I love the woods, am loyal, I'm typically alert, but I'm not perfect.
I'm like Aragorn in that... I'm determined, independant, loyal, I think I could hold my own in a fight, again... I'm more of a loner, and I typically don't care about what other people think about me. Also, I have no desire to be famous, I have my own sense of honor, and I have strong convictions about things and I stick to them. Also... I hate to quit, and I only do so when there is no other choice.

I'm a hobbit, not sure which one, though. I love to wander through fields and woods, lie in the grass, stare the blue sky and do nothing. And I love trees. I don't smoke though smilies/smile.gif

I've done loads of personality tests, and so far, I've gotten Legolas twice, and almost every other character (even minor) once, so I'm not depending on the tests. (If you do, try this (http://www.selectsmart.com/) link. Go to the LotR ones.) Anyway, *sigh* I think I'll have to figure this out myslef. Okay. Out of the hobbits, I think Merry or, in some ways, Frodo, might work. Merry because he has a sense of humor sometimes, but isn't always like Pippin. I dunno why, actually. I just feel like he works. Frodo- as someone said, I'd like to go places, but I know I'd miss where I am now. Out of the humans- Aragorns, Boromir, Denethor, Faramir. I don't quite know. IF you go by the books, then it's like this: certainly not Aragorn. Too "perfect", I think. Boromir- possibly. I have a certain attraction to circly shiny things that people put onto their fingers...ah yes. Rings. smilies/rolleyes.gif Denethor- No. I just don't think I'm like that at all. When I'm around other people, at least, I'm usually either very quiet, or, once in a while, really loud and jumpy and wishing I had a tail so I could chase it. Neither seems to fit Denethor. I don't know how he was when without other people or only Boromir, so I can't judge that, really. Faramir- well, maybe, but the book Faramir is too honest and true and just too good. By the movies- Denethor we haven't seen, I can't tell. Aragorn- works in a way, he has his own troubles, but he's a bit too much "to the rescue!" Boromir- works. I really liked how he did his little "speech" at Lorien in FotR. I don't know, but after I saw that, I liked him more and thought he was more exactly...I don't know, right. Faramir- Yeah. A touch of evil smilies/evil.gif smilies/wink.gif but actually good. Actually I don't think it's that. It's the way D. Wenham did the facial expressions and every little detail, not the big picture. Okay, the Dwarves: I can't identify with any of them. Never liked Dwarves. Except possibly Gimli just after they left Lorien. Elves- oooh, Elves have always been my favorites. So- I'll do books first. Elrond, sons of Elrond, Arwen, Galadriel, Haldir, Celeborn, Legolas. Elrond- my favorite. I've always really liked the way he is there, but seems higher up. I also hoought that the line about the parting of Elrond and Arwen made me like him much more. Can't really identify with him though. Elladan and Elrohir- we don't really meet them much, so I can't identify, but I liked how much of them I "saw". Arwen- In the books, we hardly meet her, but I thought I could slightly identify with her at the end, at the giving of the white gem to Frodo. Galadriel and Celeborn- I've always liked them, but their too noble to actually try and imagine myself as them. Haldir- I liked him in general, but it took me a long time to remember his name. smilies/rolleyes.gif Legolas- I'd say I thought I could identify with him. Dreaming without sleeping- that's like me. Insomnia. smilies/rolleyes.gif No really, I thought I could, but for different reasons. He obviously does have feelings, but doesn't really show them much. And we got to know him more than any of the other Elves, even though that still isn't too much. Elves in the movies: Elrond- I actually liked him, not the best, but I liked him. He looked like he was hiding feelings. Not in the way that I would identify with him though. Sons of Elrond- ummmm.... Arwn- Many people said they didn't like her. I thought she wasn't too great in the first movie, but in the second- pretty good. NO identification, though. Galadriel and Celeborn- Celeborn didn't say enough that I could identify with him. Galadriel- I liked, but not me. I don't blow up and turn green... Haldir- certainly. I don't know why, but now that I've seen the movies, Craig Parker is one of my favorite actors. When he was dying, I thought that was so sad, i nearly cried, which I certainly didn't when Boromir was dying. I just- I don't know. I thought he was just right. Legolas- well, I'm somewhat partial to his looks (NOT a rabid fangirl...ugh) but he was made to be a somewhat neutral character. Do Elves have a good sense of smell? Cause, if they do, I fit...I've got glasses, so eyesight doesn't work, and my hearing is normal. *sigh* At least in the movie thye made him a little bit of a character. Others; Saruman! Good gone bad... smilies/evil.gif smilies/wink.gif Lol, not really, I don't think any of the others work. By the way, you could have scrolled down past all of this... smilies/redface.gif
Edit: Oops. I forgot Eowyn and Eomer and Theoden. Eowyn- definitely. I don't know why, I just identify with her very well. Eomer- Possibly. He goes after the orcs even when told not o....I think I see a bit of myslef there...Theoden: No. I don't know why, just not my thing. Especially in the movie. The book one- only when he's dying.

Hey! I've done lots of personality tests and come out as a different one every time! I tried the one from your link,Galadriel of the Olden and I thought it was really good, the whole prioritising answers thing is good. I came out as Aragorn...so, I'm obviously absolutely perfect etc. He he! I have also come out as Sam(on the BD test) which I was quite pleased with since he's my fav. character in the book...I've also come out as Boromir...hmmm...I like him but I can't see any similarities between us...ah well...!

I get a different answer with each test I take, but the two that turn up the most often are Pippin smilies/biggrin.gif and Aragorn. I have yet to figure that out, but....
Some of the other ones I've gotten are: Frodo, Sam, Merry, Legolas (gotten him alot too), Eowyn, and...Treebeard smilies/eek.gif I so didn't see that one coming. But, yeah, overall, I think I'm most like Pippin. i.e. I don't know what's going on half the time, have an inadvertant sense of humor, but I do know when to be serious. Fun to be around, tougher than I look. Kinda naive, and I'm not fully apriciated. Meh, that's just what I think...

When I take personality tests, I almost always end up with Sam. But from reading the books, I relate most to Eowyn and Merry. Eowyn because well, in a small way, I'm always yelling at people to stop trying to do things for me. I swear I have "I am fragile" written on my forehead somewhere smilies/biggrin.gif.
I relate to Merry in Return of the King because he's always feeling like luggage, eg. "Why did they bring me, I'm not wanted", when he really does have alot of things to contribute, if they would let him.

In that personality test Galadriel posted, it was as I feared: Boromir as the top choice. Aragorn was the second, Tom Bombadil next, then the Nazgul, Gollum, Sauron, Legolas, Arwen, Elrond, Galadriel, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Gandalf, Gimli, Sam Frodo Baggins, and Bilbo Baggins. I find it funny all the hobbits were generally on the bottom and that the Elves came after the Nazgûl, Gollum and Sauron. Shows what I'm like, eh? smilies/wink.gif

I wonder... did we actually connect with these characters or did we mold ourselves after their image after we found them to be admirable? I think it was a bit of both. In some aspects, I connected with Boromir and/or Éowyn, and in others I tried to be more like them. What do all of you think?

Sam and Pippin. The personality test said Gandalf, but it's wrong. I have to friends who say I bear an amazing semblance to Tinuviel, but I haven't finished reading The Silmarillion (that being where they got the fact) so I don't know what they meant. Anyway, I'm like Sam in that, for the most part, I'm loyal, and absolutely fascinated with what others think of as children's tales, and I'm rather bad at grammar. I know because im glancing up at the rest of this post and finding mistakes that I can't fix, for some odd reason. I'm like Pippin in that often I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but I'm always perky, jumping, and singing some song or another. So really I'm more of a caracature of Pip. Maybe I'm exactly like one of his sisters!
Oh, and I'm trying to learn Elvish. Not Tolkien's, admittedly, because it's nearly impossible to hold a conversation in his, but I am trying to learn another modern dialect, as I've come to call it. I'm not sure which char that's most like.
I didn't try to mold after my chars, and I think that I barely did subconciously, except in speech patterns, and luckily, when I fall into those patterns (namely, not now) I take most after Frodo.

I say that I am most like Bilbo, after he got on with his journey. I don't really care what other people think (much) and I don't want to have a life that has no excitement. " I want to see mountains again Gandalf, mountains," that quote fits very much with what I am like. It could have come from my mouth. even the Gandalf part. smilies/smile.gif

An interesting question... and as I was thinking about initiating a thread somewhat like this one, I shall revive this thread instead. smilies/biggrin.gif Hopefully more will contribute to it?....
As for me... I think that I have facets of Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, and Eowyn. I'm similar to the shield maiden in that I feel at times I should have been much happier had I been born a boy. Disguising herself and going to war, with a hopelessness born of desperate circumstances, is not at all unlike what I would imagine myself doing, in her place. I admire Arwen for her beauty and grace but I have, I think, a good deal more of Eowyn's human-ness. As to the others- I have Aragorn's thoughtful melancholy, at times, and at others a hobbit's lightheartedness... I love adventure, and challenge, but also comfort and simplicity (hobbit "holes" have always seemed most inviting), and food. smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/tongue.gif I can be intensely loyal, (Sam, Aragorn) but also self-sacrificing; eager to please; to have myself tried and proven true... Perhaps I'm a little of them all or perhaps none. smilies/rolleyes.gif
I thought/question has just occurred to me, though it probably needs a thread of its own, were it to be answered. Who was Tolkien most like? Which of his characters was most patterned after him? Hmmm...
Next, anyone? smilies/biggrin.gif

I believe that Tolkien said in one of his letters that he modelled Faramir after himself (I would have thought Beren, since he compared himself and his wife to Beren and Luthien, but who can know the mind of an author?)
As to the character that reminds me, I have absolutely no idea except to say that I am remarkably like Pippin sometimes

That's very interesting, Imladris . I had never heard that and I certainly would not have guessed it. Especially because Faramir is not one of the major characters, per say. At least, he's not one of the Fellowship. But then, I never would have made the connection between Tolkien and Treebeard, either, smilies/wink.gif had not Meela mentioned it. I believe Tolkein is most like Gandalf. He's very mysterious, very cunning, and I might add wise. Tolkein is a mentor, so Gandalf is a mentor to Frodo.
As for myself, I believe I am most like Eowyn because , even though I'm a woman, I can be really tough and determined like a man. She and I may look different, but I am like her. I may look pretty, but I can kick butt too. Also, I don't give up. I find a way to do what I want or need to do.

That link had me as Aragorn first...don't know why! I suppose I am a loner-ish kind of person...I sit and watch my friends rather than contribute to conversations. And I prefer doing projects on my own, etc etc. Ok, I think I've answered my own quesiton! Then Éowyn...I can be very stubborn like her...
But I feel most like Túrin...I have the whole hot and cold mood thing. It's very frustrating and it confuses people...and it's very stupid. Basically if I am enthusiastic for something, and people run me down enough, I suddenly go cold. It is sooo weird. And Túrin has that too...he gets all heated up and passionate, then goes totally cold. Heathcliff is like that too...but yeah.

I originally had myself down as Eowyn. But thinking about it, I'm only like her in a couple of aspects. I read the above comparison to Aragorn, and realise that I kinda fit that description. So I'm now partly Eowyn and partly Aragorn.

I see myself as Eowyn the most. I like to fight, hate to be left behind, like to hang out with the guys, and so on. Oh, and the quotes really appeal to me:
'What do you fear, lady?' he asked. 'A cage,' she said. 'To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire.'
Oh, so true! And so like me!
"But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."
She's so strong!
" ...I am of the House of Eorl and not a serving woman. I can ride and wield blade, and I do not fear..."
And I could go on and on foreever. But I won't...
Anyway, Eowyn is the one I look up to, and I would really want to be like!

I've taken quite a few personality tests in my time, and they all come up as something different. I've been Frodo, Gandalf, Pippin and Barliman Butterbur, amongst others. But in my opinion, I'd say I'm a lot like Pippin. I say foolish things sometimes, joke around when it's not needed but I think in a crisis I could pull myself together. But I can also see some tomboyish Eowyn parts in me, and the 'I wanna stay at home!' part of Bilbo too smilies/biggrin.gif

I think that I am most like Legolas. I tend to be a bit of a loner, I already have some of the physical habits of the Elves ("sleeping" 2-3 hours per night, living on very little food, and very good aim) and I've always somehow thought like one. I tend to stand back in most "Quests" and I only help when it's really needed. I mean, I'm not a drag on resources or anything, I do what needs to be done, but I'm not overly helpful, and I can stick to a goal "to whatever end," and I have a penchant for starting fairly hopeless endeavors (read, Quest for Mt. Doom).

From several personality tests, (barrowdowns and others) I am Legolas, smilies/biggrin.gif but the runner up is Aragorn. However, the female character I am most like is Eowyn, because she's a rebel and no one lets her prove herself so she has to do it alone. smilies/frown.gif And I'm almost fearless, except for "cages" and jellyfish. smilies/eek.gif (random, but true) And I too have "some skill with a blade," not that that's a significant trait for her... Fencing! I love fencing! The problem is, in the three years that I studied foil, I only won one bout, and that was because my opponent had never fenced before in her life! Eventually, I got discouraged and quit, especially after the fencing coach told me that he was only going to let me fence once he was sure the team had won. Also, being on the team took up WAY too much time. I do wish I could take it up again though!
Anyway . . . I think I'm a mix between Pippin, Merry, and Eowyn. Strange combination, I know, but I'm very cheerful most of the time, almost too curious for my own good, and have streaks of stubborness and determination that are absolutely unquenchable. Also, I love eating and I'm small (5 ft tall at 17!!), two qualities of mine which have prompted my friends to dub me 'the Hobbit-lass'. And I'd do anything to defend the ones I love, which I believe is a quality Eowyn possesses.

There can be no doubt that I am a Hobbit.
I have all their atributes, except the hairy feet. smilies/smile.gif
The Barrowdowns personality test has me down as Butterbur with Sam as second choice, so it will have to be Sam.
Like Sam, I tend to take a supportive rather than a leadership role in life (my job is that of a servant to lore-masters). Also like Sam I can be very stubborn, I will take the lead if pushed hard enough and I love old tales of daring adventure.
I sometimes feel a little like Merry, too; quieter, more reflective and less impetuous than hobbits like Pippin. Like Merry, I sometimes feel that I'm being swept along by events over which I have no control.

Yeah I was kinda like that too... I think I tried to go to the next level too fast. My only consolation was that I wasn't exactly the worst in the class, there was a little kid like 4 years younger than everyone else... But I'm gonna keep on trying (next semester, I quit for this one) because it's really fun and it's also cool to drop the fact casually to strangers and watch their impressed reactions. They don't have to know we suck... yep. And my friend wants everyone to know that her LOTR character is gandalf, because he is uber-cool. *umm..? ouch don't hit me*

The first time I read the books, I strongly identified with Frodo. Now, many years and several readings later, I identify with... Frodo. He loved his home but longed for adventure, fought for a noble purpose and was not afraid to defend his principles. He was fond of music and tales, enjoyed his friends but also his solitude, and sought to understand others. I too travel alone, sometimes with joy, often with sadness, but always eager to see what's round the next bend and to accomplish the task at hand.

Well, for me it varies from day to day - some mornings you wake up and you feel like Aragorn, and then there are days when you feel like Gollum. But overall I'd have to say that if I actually think about it really hard, I'm most like Sam. He's incredibly and almost blindly loyal; he has this amazing determination, born out of that loyalty; and he never lets go of hope. Also, he goes on this incredible journey and does great things, but at the same time he would be content to just stay at home in the Shire and enjoy the simple things, and I can see both aspects in myself at different times.
Regarding what Rynoah said, about whether we really connected with the characters or whether we mold ourselves after them, I'm not sure. In my case, I first read The Lord of the Rings when I was pretty young (like 9 or 10) so it's hard to remember whether I was already like that or not. But I remember Sam was always my favourite when I was a child, so it definitely wouldn't surprise me if I had tried to mold myself to be more like Sam because I admired him.
As for which character Tolkien is, I would imagine that there's a little piece of Tolkien in most of the characters, since he created them all.

About Tolkein
I first thought about him being a hobbit. Because he loved the outdoors and food.
However that fact about him comparing himself to Faramir. It kinda makes sense. Faramir's reluctance to fight was like that of Tolkien. The reluctance to go to war and leave his beloved city or in Tolkien's case his country behind.
Anyway that is just my point of view. smilies/smile.gif

I think I'm a weird mixture of Eowyn, Legolas, and Sauron. For the Legolas part, see my previous post. I think I'm like Eowyn because I can be described as having that devil-may-care attitude about what society and my family thinks of me, as long as I feel I get to do things that are within my abilities. If someone kept me back from fighting, like what happened to Eowyn, my reaction would have been identical to hers. I also tend to fall for the unattainable guys, or the guys that never seem to like me in return.
I can be rather like Sauron because I can be a bit of a megalomaniac, I'm really extremely ruthless, I've always wanted to take over the world, and sometimes, if I really want something, I can completely forget that other people have feelings too. If I want something, I ruthlessly go and get it, even if I have to trample on other people's feelings. Which, I guess, could make me like Fëanor too. I have the temper already, and I resent my mother (well, she is my biological mother, and Fëanor resented his stepmother, but that's close enough) and my father spoils me rotten. I'm also the oldest of three, and my two younger brothers are much younger than I am, as Fingolfin and Finarfin were much younger than Fëanor.

About Tolkein
I first thought about him being a hobbit. Because he loved the outdoors and food.
However that fact about him comparing himself to Faramir. It kinda makes sense. I think Tolkien says also that he is "a hobbit in all but stature," but he does most closely identify the character of Faramir with his own personality as well. I always like to think there is a little bit of Tolkien in all the characters (except the really nasty ones!).
As for myself, I think Pippin would be my identified personality (mainly his apprehensive but also impulsive nature), although, there are aspects of Frodo's personality that are strongly suggestive of my own, viz. his willingness to learn from others and his great delight and surprise in same (esp. with Sam!). But there is also (perhaps this is as much a movie-artifact as a book one, though) the tendency to identify with Faramir, since although I am the eldest and female, my brother has always had more favor with my father. Strangely enough, my father and I were always said by others to be so much alike we could not get along for that reason, and that is sort of how I see Faramir and Denethor; both have the deep lore backgrounds, but they use it differently and thus cannot see eye to eye. There...sorry about the ramble! Incidentally, I've never come out as Faramir in any personality test! Mostly the hobbits--Frodo, Sam and Pippin most often, with Frodo edging out the others slightly. Once in a while Aragorn or Legolas or even Gandalf!
Cheers!

I don't now whom I am the most like. However, I would most like to be like Arwen. I can come across loud and plafully violent but I am always trying find peacful solutions. I always try not to hold grudges and hope that people will change. I love how Arwen is so faithful. I admire how she gives the greater sacrifice without the glory as opposed to Eowyn who goes and fights(which is no sacrifice because she wanted to fight) and gets the glory and the fame. Arwen has to stay behind, away from the battle in gnawing anxiety over the fate of Aragorn and mankind. Please do not hawever misunderstand me by thinking that I think Eowyn is not noble, this conclusion would be utterly flse. Thanks smilies/smile.gif

I suppose I consider myself somewhat like Legolas, Elrond, Treebeard, or Aragorn. Legolas because he is a bit reserved and quiet, not unlike myself, and he likes trees smilies/biggrin.gif . Elrond because of his leadership skills and knowledge, which represents my better side. Treebeard, because of his love for nature and all things good and green. Aragorn because I am a loner at times; liking to go off and do something by myself. And then there's my inner hobbit (only my close friends and family see it), which would probably be like Merry who seems to become more outgoing when he's around Pippin.

Hmm..never really gave it much serious thought. My favourite characters are Aragorn and Sam (the Downs test says I am like Aragorn), but also Arwen. Which has become one of my many nicknames.
I suppose I am a mix of the three, with Sam's fierce loyalty, Aragorn's intensity, [mostly smilies/rolleyes.gif] gentle, quiet spirit, and "loner" tendencies (I wish I had a smile that made me seem worthy of honour..but that's impossible with braces.).
The part of me that earned the nickname of Arwen must be subconscious, because I can't figure out where that came from...
But I see myself as mostly an Aragorn-ish figure (film & book), with many similar habits and/or desires; most of which are known only to me... and perhaps one or two others. smilies/biggrin.gif

Faithful to his friend at the burning of the ships, courageous in facing against the Morgoth Bauglir in The Battle of Five armies, and the last desperate deed to gain his Silmaril and redeem his oath... And his death, valiant but sorrowful, throwing himself into the gaping chasm of fire.

I can't believe I have never posted in this thread!
Well I most definitely have a Frodo personality, but with the greastest of all urges to travel, which makes me kind of different in a way (I can never stay in one place for a huge amount of time). But personality wise I am very much a Frodo. I can be a loner, I am very deep and I spend a lot of time alone, but then I also enjoy the friendship of friends and family. And in addition I love learning from all. He has always been the one that I have related too the most since when I first read the book. Even at the end in Mt. Doom and Mordor, when he had very much changed into a different person, he very much reminded me of myself.

I was just thinking recently how much I resemble Bilbo. I generally have a hobbity personality but I share Bilbo's intelectual curiosity. I can see myself pouring over old Elvish scrolls and making poems about Earendil, while at the same time looking forward to the next meal. Long councils (debates, etc) end up boring me. (I am easily bored  ). I selfishly surround myself with bright and interesting people. Sometimes I suprise not only the others but also myself, finding a strength in me that I had no idea I possessed. And lastly, I'm a peace maker at heart.

I think I am more like Eowyn. I may be a woman but that doesn't mean I am weak. I can fight my own fights, too. And I could be stubborn at times. Eowyn for me symbolizes a special kind of girl power, Middle Earth style. In a world or kingdom dominated by men, she does not let herself get intimidated. Her strong personality is even made more fiery by her heart, the passionate and loving heart of a woman. And that has made her one-of-a-kind! And I admire her. I'd love to identify myself with her.

This a very difficult question to ask. hhmmmm....I would have to say that I am most like 3 character of LOTR. These three are: Elrond, Eowyn, and Sam.
Elrond because my friends say that I seem to have "the answers to everything" and am very wise. But, I think that I am like him because I think over things before I do them..though I don't always think before I say something. ;)
Eowyn because I am often very sad, though I am not totally sure why, but I can have fun at times, and am sometimes very "silly", as my friends would say. Also, the obvious, I am a girl and a blonde as well.
Sam because I am very simple. I like to cook and like the simple pleasures of life. I also like to do gardening, and I LOVE mushrooms. Just like a hobbit!! :D
So, those are who I am most like, though I do have the a ffew characteristics of some of the other characters of LOTR.

Another good topic!
Well, I am very much like a Hobbit anyway - my 'real' name is even a Hobbit name! And I look like a Hobbit - minus the hairy feet. ;) But I'm most like Bilbo. A bit eccentric, not a very keen adventurer, and I like to sit in the garden and smoke. I'm always saying I'll write a book one day, and I am sometimes a bit too nosy for my own good. And, if I had a ring which made me invisible, I'd use it all the time, too. It's a bit disturbing really, because my father looks like the film version of Bilbo. I can sometimes be just a bit defiant, like Eowyn, but she's more like the younger me.

when i took that personality test it come up with Gimli then Bill Ferny then Boromir. None of those characters reminds me of myself, if any character does than its either sam or merry.
I would have to say that I am most like Merry. Adventurous and brave if the ocasion calls, and I also love spending time with my friends, but I'm not quite as curious as Pippin. oh! and I like food! :D

I am a hobbit/elf. I love nature and am most happy with a few friends or solitude. (sp.?) But lately, my two best friends have been struggling with their identities ad in general finding out about life. I don't agree with some of their decissions, but I will stick with them all the way to Mordor and beyond no matter what. When I pledge loyalty, I mean it forever, not just for the school year, or a little while; I mean it forever. So, I truely believe I am a Sam. Sure, I like my food (how I got this lovely figure), and nature is really important to me and loyalty I hold above all other qualities.
But then again, I have a sword necklace that I wear always...I am always willing to defend my friends. (maybe with pots and pans... but hopefully a little bit better prepared then that !!)

Some primary characteristics:
--merry among a few close friends, very quiet in a large group
--would rather be hanging around with jolly young friends & nephews & neices than doing something "important"
--long walks alone, often in the dark
--love the stars, elves, trees, water
--singing and collecting songs (and every now and again, writing one)
--the garden needs weeding-- where's Sam?
--dawdle and delay before leaving home
--when a big decision is due, I sit and think and think and think while people wait for the decision
--pessimism surfaces during difficulties
--wish someone else had been selected to do the job I have
--tried to give it away a couple of times
--yes, it's a burden; just keep putting one foot in front of the other
--I'm writing the history (of the family) because it needs to be done, including writing down my dad's stories (Bilbo!)
...Frodo.
(Frodo started as an extrovert... I wonder if he ended up as an INFP)

I would have to say that I am probably a lot like Faramir, in that I constantly have to love up to other's expectations, I'm never perfect enough for anyone (or maybe its just myself.) I am a very booksmart person, and am quiet and keep to myself, I have a gentle nature and do give up very easily.
That's probably my main character I'm similar to. I'm kind of like Galadriel too, I guess. Not sure

The tests I've taken always say that I'm most like Aragorn or Gandalf. I tend to be pretty serious, though I'll let my hair down if I'm comfortable. Conflict or pressure doesn't make me buckle, but fight harder. I'm loyal, have a terrible guilty consience, and don't mind standing up for what I believe.

I'm Figwit. LOL!! Unlike Maeggaladiel, my online alter-ego, I'm usually really quiet when in groups and so few people really know me personally. I tend to keep to myself. Also I'm not very attractive.
Okay, okay, for a REAL lotr character, I'd say I'm most like Boromir. I'm the older child, although I'm not the favorite. (My sister says otherwise, though. :D )I'm pretty cynical and suspicious of things that don't seem "right." (IT'S A CONSPIRACY, I TELL YOU!!) I consider myself very smart and I don't suffer fools. I try to convince people to follow my ideas, and although I'm not as cranky as Boromir, I will sometimes give in and pout if I'm outnumbered. I also get depressed very easily. I don't like working in groups. (The Society of Nearsighted Elves are probably reading this and getting nervous.)
Unlike Boromir, however, I won't try to take things from people. I just get depressed and have the "the world is ending and it's all your fault for not following my ideas" pout. I'm not all evil, though; I am very good-natured most of the time. And I'm not as bad as I just said I was about forcing my ideas on people. Most of the time I'll give in to other people's ideas if I'm outnumbered and I WON'T pout. Unless it's a school project and my grades could suffer from it. Then I'm a little more agressive. :D
Great, I just made myself sound like a big jerk. I'm really not that bad, believe me! I'm kind and good and friendly and fun and... and... stuff! And for all you Frodos out there, I won't try to take your stupid jewlery!!

The BD Personality Test believes that I am most like Legolas but am also similar to Aragorn and Samwise Gamgee. Personally, I consider myself to be an Aragorn in regards to personality. Hate to say it, but I do enjoy leading. I am also a fan of long strolls in the wilderness and beheading large Uruks.

Grimku, you have the potato-head as your avatar? Beautiful.
I think that I'm most like one of the hobbits. Merry or Pippin. I'm good hearted, kind of naive at times. Sometimes my curiosity gets the better of me, and sometimes I do downright foolish things, but all in all I try to do the right thing. I'm rather young. Also, I love to eat (heh heh).

well mad by name and by nature it seems Mr. Baggins.
Sure he may be the ugliest character by a mile but Gothmog holds his place in one of the top rungs of players. Not saying he has the importance of a Baggins, Samwise or Aragorn but still in the RotK he is second in command only behind the Witch King of course of Saurons Armies. Anyway you must be wondering why I am saying all of this, well to be honest, I was kind of wondering what the hell is with your avatar.
Cheers buddy.

Hmmm..I really had to think about this one, because I don't really think that I am much like any one person in ME, more like a conglomerate..but if I really had to choose I'd say Aragorn..because he feels as if he is not worthy to be King of Gondor. I often suffer from an inferiority complex !! so I can relate to that.
But if I had to choose someone to get drunk with, it'd be Merry and Pippin hands down :D

Hm. On one LOTR persoality test, I came off as Gil-Galad. Can't imagine why, though, our personalities are really quite different. But if you're asking my opinion, I can think of about two characters that I can connect myself with right off the bat.
The first is Éowyn. I always loved her ever since I first 'met' her in the books, because we're both strong-willed, female, and not about to let people walk all over us. Nor are we willing to let other people fight our battles, or stay behind and wait while something we care for is being threatened. I've adored women warriors for a long time- a lit of my characters, either in my writing or roleplays, are of that category.
The second character, ironically, is her nemesis- the Witch-King of Angmar. I freely admit I have a vicious streak, which often pops up when people annoy me in some way, shape or form- which has been happening quite frequently of late. I have very dark thoughts, and have been known to fantasize about grinding those around me into a pulp. There's also a note of tragedy that hangs around the ringwraiths, for what they once were.
Am I being depressing?
Blah.
Plus there's my equally morbid fascination with things what are evil, as it were... one might even call it a love.

He's not exactly a LotR character, more of a Silmarillion character, but I identify most with Fëanor. :D Heh heh, yes I over-react to things a lot, I'm kind of violent sometimes  , and I tend to get obsessed with things. Most personality tests say I'm most like Gimli, but I don't think so.

I would have to be Merry or Pippin. Most likely Merry. I have lots of energy, I`m hyper avtive, adventurous, would be considered very odd, and I`m cute! (just kidding) ;) I`m kind of simple minded, so in that area, I would definately be Pippin. :D

Maybe I would be Faramir. I'm a risktaker and I would do anything to prove myself to others. I'm really quiet and down to earth but people see me differently. Just like Saraphim, I too would protect my loved ones at all costs. :)
Well, BD's test says I am most like Sam or Frodo, I would say more like Frodo, cause I don't think I am that brave :p hehe!
But yet I see myself more as Faramir, just as you Elven Hunter, I want to prove myself to others. ;)

I know you're not supposed to pick two but I would have to say a mixture of Pip and Sam. I love Pip's sense of humor and carefree persona and his sort of imaturity describes me to a T. But I absolutely love Sam. He is such a well written character. The type of friend I would love to have or be to someone and his loyalty is so emotionally moving. They are both wonderful.

According to the Barrow-Downs Personality Quiz, I am most like Gandalf, but I am also much like Legolas and Aragorn. On most other quizzes, they say I'm like Legolas. I deny all association, though. I would say I am most like book Arwen. I am a rather hopeless romantic that claims she would give up a lot for love - not all, mind you, but a lot. Also, I don't mind staying out of things. My friend is more like Eowyn, insisting that she always be involved in all of the things that the boys do, but I'm content doing what I can.
Yes, so to sum up, of the characters present in The Lord of the Rings, I identify most with Arwen.
I identify with Nessa a bit, I suppose. I don't really identify with any other Tolkien character, but Nessa's my favorite Vala.

Well, the personality tests always say Pippin, but I identify more with Feanor. I'm impulsive, stubborn, artsy (you have to see some of the stuff I'm planning at the moment), I've never known one of my parents, have the most uirritating half-brother who, I admit, have drawn sword on. *pouts* He's such a prat...and it was so close! I took the personality test & it says I'm most like Gandalf, but also my personality is alot like Legolas & Samwise. I would definitely have to say Sam. Like Sam, I have a very simple outlook on life, but I know if my courage & strength of heart was desperately needed, I would use it, full force. I like to think of Sam as my alter ego. I couldn't think of any other character I'd rather be like :) Except Merry or Pippin, those 2 always having a blast.

It said I was Samwise, also close to Frodo and Gandalf. But I took this other test and it said I was most like Galadriel.
"Like many elves, Galadriel has a rich inner life and a level of mystery. Although elves say both yes and no when sought for counsel, their insight is valuable. She has exceptional empathic abilities.
You are likely to be quiet, and gentle, enjoying helping other people grow and realize their potential. Others may view you as mystical. Time alone is important and solitary activities refresh you. You have a tendency to introspection. While providing compassion and being considerate, you may have the tendency of being soft-hearted or even "too emotional" You try to schedule your life as much as possible. You tend to finish your work before resting.
The Orcs display the evil side of this personality with their lengthy torture methods.
Traits: Empathic, benevolent, looking to the future. On the dark side you could be sadistic. "

ROFL!!!!
Frodo Baggins, Son of Drogo
With many acquaitenances, Frodo is deeply attached to a few people, like Bilbo, Aragorn, Gandalf, and Sam. His high ethics come out in his treatment of Gollum and Saruman. Frodo has pity on Gollum and believes that change can occur.
You have a strong personal morality. You are committed to relationships and their growth. You tend to be an idealist, believing the best of the world around you. Time alone is important and solitary activities refresh you. You have a tendency to introspection. While providing compassion and being considerate, you may have the tendency of being soft-hearted or even "too emotional" You like keeping your options open. Closure is probably not one of your strong suits.

Aragorn (Stryder) Son of Arathorn
Aragorn's decisions often seem against conventional wisdom, but he knows what to do and why it must be done, regardless of the cost.
You are good at making contingency plans and come up wiith efficient means to acheive clear-cut ends. You are highly independent, and continue on with your plans even in the face of data that might suggest to others that it's no longer feasible. Time alone is important and solitary activities refresh you. You have a tendency to introspection. In your desire for clarity in life, you may have the tendency of being remote or even "heartless". You try to schedule your life as much as possible. You tend to finish your work before resting.
As the foil to Aragorn, Sauron clearly embodies the evil side of this personality.
Traits: Pragmatic, autonomous, ingenious, resolute. On the dark side you could desire power and domination.

Curiosity is one of your strong points as it allows you to think of better ways to acheive goals. You may try to outwit the system of you get bored or annoyed with it. Social interaction energizes you. The more people the merrier. You have a tendency to introspection. In your desire for clarity in life, you may have the tendency of being remote or even "heartless". You like keeping your options open. Closure is probably not one of your strong suits.
As the foil to Aragorn, Sauron clearly embodies the evil side of this personality.

Okay, question time folks.
If you had to pick any character out of LOTR that you felt were most like, who would it be(personality test excluding) :smokin: ?
I myself aren't sure, I sometimes think I'm most like the Mouth of Sauron due to my great insults (and bad fashion sense), but what about you lot?
Boromir88
09-15-2004, 04:25 AM
the barrowdowns does have a personality test. I came up most like Boromir, and close to Sam. So it is Boromir since he is most like myself. But if I were not going by the personality test and just thinking, it might be Elrond (except not as grumpy).
Meela
09-15-2004, 08:11 AM
The personality test always tells me I'm Legolas, and similar to Aragorn.
I'm tempted to say I'm more like Elrond, simply because we're both grumpy.
It's hard to pick just one or two characters; I have different points in common with a lot of them. I could say I'm a lot like Eowyn, I'm somewhat like Faramir, a little bit like Finduilas, and I aspire to be like Imrahil. With a bit of Pippin thrown in.
I don't feel like I have anything in common with the Elves, apart from a tendency to like forests, or any other prominent characters such as Aragorn, Gandalf, Frodo, or Theoden.
I s'pose a better question is, since I can't decide: which character does everyone else think I'm most like?

Oh, how i have thought about this topic... well, i see myself as a mixture of characters, my favorite character Boromir (*Praise the Disco-King!* :D ) though, not being anything like myself. Honestly, i see myself as a Radagast, or i can realate to him the most. Though little is said about him, i feel very much alike. Tolkien for me, explained and presented him as being sort of detacted from the human world, introverted, mysterious but ideal. I relate to him in two ways, maybe even more. I love animals, i do not know or want to know my life without their influence, another is that i find myself always giving advice to friends and family when they ask it but, i always hide myself or dissappear when someone expresses their thankfulness by telling others about me or thanking me. Also i love rural areas, even though i can agree some cities are wonderful (the closest to me being Seattle for comparison), I can't cope with how crampt and lifeless they are. In other words, give me a deserted island or costal forest and i'm estatic. :)
Well, that's all i have to say. Wish i had more but, that's it.

I'm probably most alike with Thorin. I have his temper and inconsistency. :D
I don't trust the personality tests. For one thing, each one gives me different results. I can't be Sam, Pippin, Legolas, Aragorn, Boromir, Gimli, and Arwen all at once! *Or can I? :Merisu:* Secondly, the multiple choice doesn't satisfy me, because I'd do neither, or a mixture of them.

I actually have to agree with Galadriel: Merry is the most like me - generally happy and friendly, a bit of an organisator and leader, feels kind of deeply but is still very down-to-earth and also of the scholarly type. Plus, he and Pippin always reminded me of myself and my little sister.
I actually also started thinking that Gimli is also someone slightly like me - I can see myself in the ubiquitous pessimism and the courage that exists side by side with it and in the loyalty to friends, the impatience and the love and awe of beautiful things. Plus, Gimli's jokes generally make me chuckle the most when I'm reading LotR even though they are sometimes really stupid.
And if I was an old man, I'd undoubtedly be a lot like Gandalf. :D

Not because I'm First, or the Master of anything in particular - and, honestly, I never make up and recite silly poetry in public nor strut around in bright yellow boots - but rather because I'm quite satisfied as long as I've got a good woman, good food and drink and some music and hiking for entertainment, much like Tom

Hmmm...I would say Eol, but that Elf simply has no sense of humor. Although spearing my ex-wife doesn't sound like such a bad idea...

Errr...I'm joking, merely joking. Ummm...Saruman is cranky enough but I don't care to wear white. Gandalf? Cranky as well, but I don't tend to meddle in other people's affairs.
Okay, I will say Smaug. A nice dry wit and a mean streak.. ;)

This is a thread about characters. Which person/creature/entity/whatever from LOTR reminds you most of yourself?
I just realised that my character doesn't fit the criteria either, since Thorin does not appear much in LOTR... If it's only LOTR, then... erm...
Well, I'd prefer to be Gilraen, but I'm not that kind of person. My personality is pretty close to Gimli's too. Nice and pesimistic, he is. :D

None of them, actually. I like the dwarves, but I don't have a beard. :D And I like the Ents, but there's no entwives and I don't like the attitude towards them anyway. (And I do like bumping spammers off the page.)

But to make things easier, I'm most like Thorin.
Marry me.
I like the dwarves, but I don't have a beard.
That is easily solved, my love. ;)
I just took the Barrow-Downs personality test (http://www.barrowdowns.com/personality.php) again after several years, and even though I feel I've changed a lot, I'm still Boromir (with a strong resemblance to Aragorn). This is awesome because I've always related to him - he's proud and does what he considers right and his duty. And if his notion of doing things right is different from the rest of the Fellowship's, he speaks out even if he's in the minority.
On my last reread of LOTR, I realised I'm also very much like Merry. I'm bossy just the same way.
And my last reread of The Hobbit proved me it's not very difficult at all to relate to Thorin either. I would be on edge (and mean) exactly like him if I was the leader of a company of 12 dwarves and a stupid hobbit, plus I see myself when his principles and haughtiness start bordering on ridiculous stubbornness.
Also, I am sure you all will be thrilled to know I just took another personality test (http://www.selectsmart.com/FREE/select.php?client=realandbetter) on Selectsmart and scored 100% as Sauron. I don't really know how I did it, but I am extremely amused.

I'm rather fond of, well, nearly everything dwarven, from architecture to hospitality.

I think I would have to say Gandalf.
I tend be overly concerned about myriad things and may come off as being somewhat grim at face value, though I do have a (rather odd) sense of humor as well.
Plus, I have a difficult time sitting still for long periods. ;)

Apparently I am 100% King Theoden. Which makes me laugh because I'm more or less a textbook definition of a Hobbit, sitting around pondering genealogy and maps while eating cake. And being easily persuaded by Wizards.

Yeah, Gandalf is more or less annoyed about half the times he opens his mouth! :p

It seems like the test is inclined to give at least one 100% result to everyone. In addition to Sauron, I was also 92% Isildur. I don't really know how I managed to do it because all my answers were honest and at least I find myself a decent person!

Must be all the 'Yes to the No' questions.
I can confirm that at least you are a rather lovely person. I only know this, because the quiz believes I'm the test-tube baby of Bilbo and Aragorn. So you know I'm made of pure good intentions, adorable eccentricity and wisdom.

I am 100% Bilbo. Would never have occured to me, but really why not?
Apparently I'm also like Pippin (funny, because I'm currently rereading LotR and for the first time I'm actually identifying with him), Gollum (thanks), Éowyn (cool, but I hope I'm not that angsty!) and Elrond (Agan may laugh now). And 0% Tom Bombadil. (Greenie comments: "Well, good. I don't think you could stand a person like that. He's just the type that he would listen to reggae and you'd be stomping your feet!")
The Barrow-Downs personality test, however, tells me I'm the most like Legolas, and that I also resemble Boromir.
As for answering the question in general, I currently feel like a mixture of Gimli, Gandalf and Frodo.

Barrow Downs says I'm either Pippin or Sam, but I relate more to Butterbur in so much as:
'He is wise enough on his own ground... he can see through a brick wall in time'
But Butterbur, while slow of thought, is unlike me in that 'he thinks less than he talks'. So I guess that would make me more akin to Treebeard in not being 'hasty'. Also I find I relate to much of C.S.Lewis's writings, and Treebeard was based on Lewis.
Hooom!
