Ok, I'm just wondering how many of you LOTR fans like or LOVE (like me smilies/wink.gif) Star Wars. For me, I think they are about on the same level as far as my favorite movies are concerned (except episode 1; not the best).

i agree with you. I think that LOTR is a little better though.

I am not a die-hard Star Wars fan, and to tell you the truth, I don't quite see why everyone loves it so much, though I will have to admit that Episode 1 and the one with the Ewoks(?) in it I liked (though, those were the only two I have ever watched relating to Star Wars).
But in my mind (and in my heart) I will always be a LotR fan, not just for its movie either.

Ah, me, I have been obsessed with Star Wars since like 1995, and LotR is my new obsession. Honestly, don't get me started on Ep.1, all I have to say about that is Jar Jar. Personally, I like both the books and the movies of LotR better, but I still love SW!

I loved the original Star Wars trilogy. The newer ones, imho, are long on special effects and low on storyline, good dialog, and action. SW1 was tolerable, but the newest one was awfully boring.

As a die hard LotR fan i would say that Star Wars is the best science fiction out there. That is only if you count LotR as fantasy. The trilogy is great. Episode one was okay but Jake Lloyd is just a bad actor.Episode Two was verry good tho.... GO YODA!!!

One word...
Chewie!
(he's my favourite character). My dad got me interested in Star Wars back when I was way too young to be watching such loong movies, so I'll always have a soft spot for the originals. They were pretty cool! I tried to use the force when I was little. Didn't work...

I really like Star Wars, since I was a little kid! smilies/smile.gif Always thought it is very fascinating. But LOTR rules, of course... smilies/biggrin.gif (Star Wars is my 3rd biggest obsession, and LOTR is my biggest, note, I´m not including music in this.) Though, I only like the fantastic trilogy, the never ones...*sigh* piece of s***... smilies/frown.gif

hear hear!! i don't know about die hard but.... i love star wars though i am reluctant to go and see the seemingly mushy ep.II. i love the origionals and my personal fave was A New Hope. I totally agree that the news ones are a little too close to the sucky side for comfort. (episode one sucked bum, i mean star wars and comedy do not go together smilies/mad.gif ) sigh but i will have to deal smilies/confused.gif

Well... Star Wars is good but LOTR RULES!!!!! Of couse that's just the opinion of a Hobbit hugging Elf-friend. smilies/smile.gif I will say that i was very upset yesterday when 99% of the people on the chatroom (barrowdowns supposed to be a lotr chat room) Shanged their names to Starwars names and started talking Star Wars. I ahve been a LOTR fan since December 13 2001 (the first day I began reading The Fellowship of the Ring) and I will cherish it and defend it with my life.

My parents let me watch Star Wars at around age 5, I loved them and I have the movies memorized from those days. Epi 1 was horrible, not enough action with Light Sabers, and Epi 2 was much better. But I'll keep on watching them because I love the orignal 3. I was a Star Wars fan before I was a Middle Earth one, smilies/frown.gif .

I'm not a "die-hard" LotR fan, but I still like STAR WARS. And I didn't think EpisodeI was THAT bad, I mean, there ARE a lot of movies that worse.(and sadly, I've quite a few of them)
And I thought Episode II was very good, diffenetly near the top of my fav.s list. smilies/smile.gif(LotR And the Sixth Sense are still tied for first)

Ah, does that explain why you've been missing from us for a while Starbreeze? Take a break and go to the movies for sanities sake.
I have actually explained before that my office where this lovely computer lives is decorated with Star Wars (original trilogy) stuff like the film posters and a five foot high cardboard Darth Vader and a dark blue ceiling covered in stars (glo-dark ones) so you can see that I'm a Star Wars enthusiast but my heart belongs to Middle Earth. If I didn't have to share my house with a partner I'd decorate a room Middle Earth style. I may yet persuade him, you never know. He got the 'Speedy Gonzales' mural on the kitchen wall! Sorry I'm way off topic again, I'll shut up.

I like Star Wars, but I'd be lying if I said I could ever like it better than Lord of the Rings. What I love is the fact that George Lucas has said that his inspiration was Lord of the Rings! (Kinda noticed that by the name of his moon, Endor.)

Unfortunately the Star Wars films (like John Milius' Conan) are underpinned by such a feeble moral (or spiritual) philosophy, which is so central to the narrative, that I have a bit of a problem with them. But they can certainly bear comparison to Lord of the Rings as "well-made adventures". And, if I can switch off from the dubious philosophising (don't start me on Yoda), the Star Wars films are indeed reasonably entertaining and visually impressive.
But surely William Shatner is beyond competition. He, Kirk - so much more than effeminate Spock and his ineffectual Vulcan Mind Meld - bestrides modern culture like a slightly chubby but irresistibly pheremonal colossus smilies/smile.gif.
I know you all hate me now. Sorry smilies/smile.gif But for a fantasy with more of an edge, try "Solaris", or even Boorman's "Excalibur".
If it helps, there are of course lots of things I like a lot which I know to be not very good. But I like them anyway ...
Peace
I saw the first when I was 5. Have been and always will be a Star Wars fan... I even have an alarm clock (from the 70's) with C3P0 and R2D2 that works! No I'm not selling it! I have some of the Jedi comics and some limited edition sets. Not selling those either! But I've loved these movies eversince I was a kid... always have always will... I just saw AOTC today and WOW!!! I must say it was really impressive... TPM wasn't all that great of a film, but because I'm a fan of the series I do own it. This one (AOTC) was much, much, better! Of course right now my all time favorite is Return Of The Jedi...
So YES I am a fan... of both!

To be honest, guys, I'm not that big on Star Wars... sure, I know the basic plot, and most of names and characters, but I don't know my Star Wars like LotR! I quite well know the history and big names! Not to mention places! I can usually tell anyone anything about lotr, which is not really the case with star wars. I like it, and I could see the movie (though, sadly, I haven't gotten to seeing attack of the clones, yet- smilies/frown.gif), but I'm not a hard core fan for star wars, as I am for lotr. somehow, all the talk of The Force just gets me confuzzled!

Hello..I'm new to this board but I would like to say that I have been a Star Wars fan for years and only recently a LOTR fan..another movie that I love and like to put up with Star Wars and LOTR is The Matrix although it doesn't have the same concept as LOTR and SW..of course some of my favorites are historical type of movies (not necessarily about true events)like Gladiator, Braveheart, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, etc. smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif

*bounces around irritably* Lookie me! Don't get me started on Star Wars. Epi. I was good, Epi. II was not so good. LOTR I hope can do better than them in the Oscars, considering that Epi. II didn't seem to be good enough. But Saruman aka Count Dooku was cool!

Star Wars the story has been around longer(in terms of exposure) and to a wider range of people because it was initialised as a movie, with a basic concept of good triumphant over evil with a lot of attractive special effects. This appeals to a lot more people than say 'the read books form cover to cover again and agian' people that are more likely to read LOTR.
Of the people who like movies, and there are a lot more of them than the ones who just read, many have found LOTR rather hard to follow.
Yes diehard fans of LOTR will enjoy the movie but may not like the more basic and glossed over approach of SW. Lotr has a theological approach that appeals only to the true readers of the story. Star Wars is meant for entertainment.
TPM was far from bad, it has become a fashion for so many to parrot the opinions of some selfcentered critic. SWep1TPM made more money than Titanibleah.
AOTC tops TPM however.

I love Star Wars I thought Episode 1 was pretty bad but I think that Episode 2 was as good as the first three. Tolkien is better though
Okay I've seen LORT 6 times and AOTC 2. They are totally different. With the exception of very, very, very awesome special effects artist!!! They creat things we can only dream.
Both were great films. I must say though AOTC is really awesome with the effects! Not that LORT is below it in any way shape or form but it was really good and I was much happier with this second edition than with TPM. The two have similar underlying conflicts to overcome... destroying the evil forces that threaten the very exhistence of life as they know it. Oh and they both have evil characters played by the same actor!!! LOL! Is Count Dukoo like Saruman? Well, yeah. LOL!
Both films were long. Only AOTC had more of a "wrapped up" ending... Which doesn't really matter too much to me cause as I've said before it really isn't over til the third one anyway...
The special effects category is heating up!!! So far this year I've been a very happy movie goer!! Several times...

Nice point Arod. And those costumes ROCKED! LOTR is going to have a hard time in the Oscars this year with AOTC. Only prob is that AOTC may have a more complete ending, but you should know LOTR is considered a trilogy to them, so therefore it isn't complete until the final movie comes out.
And YAY to me! I'm an Animated Skeleton now! LOL.

Since someone asked... ^_^ Well, we all hate Jar Jar, right? In my opinion, he was the leargest downfall of Episode 1 (and I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't seen 2 yet). He was created by Lucas's son. That child caused the evil little Gungan to take the role that he did. I also believe (without much proof, so yell at me if you wish) that Lucas turned the movie to more a child's show because of his own children. My thoughts, and not necessarily interesting ones.

Jar-jar was funny to me at first, because I was younger, but now he's just plain annoying. I really do like the rest of Star Wars, though! It's my second-fave series! That is one thing that ALL my friends and I love to talk about. We are all right below obsessed with Star Wars. That's not what brought us together, but ya know, it's a common interest! And don't worry, QuickSlash, I haven't seen it yet either. I want to, though! Maybe I'll see it today! smilies/biggrin.gif
I didn't really hate him as much as I found him annoying... Jar-Jar is like ice-cream great and at first but if consumed in large quantities quickly gives you a brain-freeze and a stomach ache. He's okay if you limit your exposure.
Nevtalathiel
05-26-2002, 04:29 AM
Arod, ice cream is always great! Although that may just be because my parents don't let me consume enough to get ill! Jar-Jar was SO annoying, even at first, and I couldn't understand a word he said throughout the entire film!

Here (http://theonion.com/onion3904/nations_love_affair.html) is an article about how
America's love affair with the J.R.R. Tolkien epic-fantasy saga Lord Of The Rings, a romance (?) which has flowered ever since the 2001 release of the Fellowship Of The Ring film adaptation, has damaged the nation's long-term relationship with George Lucas' Star Wars saga, perhaps irreparably.
Verrrry Interesting.

Heck yah I like SW! But not as much as Lord of the Rings. I'll watch Episodes IV, V, VI, I, & II every now ant then, but for FotR and TTT, it's like 3 Xs a month!

I don't really like Star Wars all that much. I really liked it when I was a kid, but now, I don't think it even compares to LotR. It's a great movie, and I really only like the trilogy, not the 'episode' saga. I don't think they're one of the best movies of all times, however, it's really good. Then, the episode I and II weren't that great.
I really think you can't compare each other because SW was spawned from a movie, where LotR is spawned from a book. Movies and books are very different so it's hard to compare them.

Personally I really like Star Wars. Return of the Jedi is still my favourite movie after Lord of the Rings (I'm going to count all of them as one, because I know I'll love the third as well). I even enjoy the facfics, I have several books, one which I'm reading right now (Tales From Jabba's Palace). However, they just don't match up to the chivalry and valour of Middle Earth. Possibly because the places and people in LotR are all on our level. They have human emotions, we feel for them, with them. And they're in places we can recognise. Star Wars is out there, unfamiliar, filled with exotic aliens and psychic warriors. Star Wars is great and all, but it just can't stand up to the sheer majesty of Lord of the Rings.
Oh, and by the way, I don't believe those new movies have anything to do with the original SW. The trilogy was brilliant. These new ones are just pathetic. The loyalty and bravery aren't there... they've been replaced with special effects and expensive costumes. Damn them... they've slaughtered Anakin for me.... and don't even start on Jar-Jar Binks. One of my so-called friends likes imitating his voice... at any given opportunity... I'm gonna kill him....

Hello Everyone, I am new here, just heard about you guys from a friend. Ya'll friendly here. I wander around, but I won't go where I am not wanted! Anyway, can I through my two cents in, actually I'll up it to 5......well to tell you the honest truth, I'm rather obessed with Middle-earth now, and it has been going on for only a year, yet at times I feel more at home there than here ::Smile:: And the movie, sparked the book reading. I saw the ad for the movie and I had "heard" of LOTR but not.....paid mind, you know? LIke whispers of it, but I never caught on, til I saw this movie and I went, "Okay, I KNOW the books are better" because.....I was left with SO MANY questions, and I was genuinely interested, so I went and bought myself the HObbit/LOTR pack and I wish I hadn't got Mass Paperback grrr, anyway.... I REALLY enjoyed it, more so than the movie at times, depends on the mood I'm in, to read or view. Now, the movie is great, but the books are greater. I think Tolkien is brilliant, a genius, and his words are like water to this thirsty spirit of mine.
On Tolkienonline.com I even wrote a letter "to" Tolkien, smilies/smile.gif heh heh. Well, I suppose thats all I have to say. Thanks for reading smilies/smile.gif The movies are great, but the books are greater......

WOW!! I don't know how I missed this thread!
I am a die hard Starwars and LotR fan!!
I go above the call of Starwars fan though*blushes* I waited out side the theatre in my town for 24 hours just to get tickets and another 7 to see the movie.
I camped out in May it was 34 degrees out side that night. We all had wind and sunburns LOL I loved it!! only in 2005, I'm brining a tent!!
I loved LotR but as far as lines to get tickets(here atleast), it wasn't that bad. I think because StarWars has been on film for almost 30 years it was a bigger deal.
Though in my eyes LotR inspired StarWars. There are WAY too many likenesses. You know GL read the books! I won't go there, too much to tell and not enough time. smilies/smile.gif
I won't wait for tickets for RotK though smilies/rolleyes.gif I would really like too but, in this part of the country you would lose a limb or digits to frostbite or you would be hypothermic before too long smilies/smile.gif
Were it any other season You bet I'd be there!!
I liked all of the characters in SW, they all serve a purpose! You couldn't get to Theed without Jar-Jar and you couldn't get to Mt. Doom without Gollum!
Anyway thats my opinion. GREAT THREAD!!

I I]love[/I] the Star Wars trilogy. The special effects and storyline are great. It can never stand up to Tolkein's story, though. he spent a lifetime on Middle-Earth. As for me, I grew up on Star Wars. Literally. Almost every night (give or take a few) my brother and I would pop popcorn, fight over which one we wanted to watch that night, then sit down and watch it. So I have always loved the Star Wars world. Before LotR that was my favorite 'series' and movies.
The trilogy is awesome. I think George Lucas could have done a lot better with Episodes I and II, though. But don't get me started on that. There's a reason I'm not on SW forums. smilies/evil.gif Don't get me wrong, the story is great, and I do love the new movies, but I guess I would rather read the books. I think they're a lot better. The original Star Wars trilogy made up 3 of my top favorite films (2,3,4). #1 is Casablanca, and #5 is FotR. I guess I have SW to owe to getting into LotR....it awoke my need for epic adventures. Aw man! Why do you have to torture my poor imagination with such hard questions? This is something I have been debating in the back of my mind since I became interested in LotR. I'm still not sure as to what my conclusion is. It depends on my current mood I think.
Some days I feel like flying around the universe 'defending the innocent and opposing the Dark Side of the Force'. (And lets be honest now; how many of us wouldn't love to have a lightsaber?)
Other days...actually a lot of days...I feel like being an Elf would be the coolest thing ever. Reasons being...well I don't think I really need to explain that to those here, considering it's common knowledge. smilies/biggrin.gif
What do I feel like today? At this point, I'm thinking a Jedi sounds pretty good. *winces in anticipation of possibly getting flamed*

Woot. Sar Wars and LotR really can't be compared. I like the old, original Star Wars and really HATE Attack of the Clones. (JarJar especially) The first Star Wars had class and style (Han Solo, teeheehee) and the new ones have none, only a sickeningly cute little boy who grows up to be even more sickeningly cute. Darth Vader is much better evil.

I like both and I'm not going to compare them because I see them as two different movies. I like the original three SW movies better than the two newer ones, but I think Episodes I and II were okay. I was a SW fan first, but I'm still a LOTR fan! smilies/smile.gif

As I little kid, I loved Star Wars. I watched the old movies, like, every Saturday night, hehe smilies/biggrin.gif . I still love them, but the new ones were really dissapointing!! smilies/frown.gif
Anyway, I think I can never love SW as much as LotR because to me, the biggest thing I like about LotR is that there is a whole world to get lost in; to be able to almost feel a part of. There is a history and everything. But in SW, there just a story, but not really much explanation of the history or anything. I dunno, it's hard to explain, and maybe that's just me. But I do love SW anyway, the original movies I mean. I found the 2 new ones quite boring (except for Yoda's fight scene smilies/biggrin.gif)

I don't have much experience with Star Wars....the one time I saw one, I don't even know which one, every time I looked people were shooting each other with razers. Revealing, no?...You may be able to tell, what I did see, even not fighting parts, did not seem good to me, but I wouldn;t really know. I am addicted to LotR though!

Nearly my entire family was huge Star Wars fans for a long time there. I can remember the movies ever since I can remember basically lol. They were really great movies, great stories too. My brother was a die-hard though: he read every single book written that continued the stories of all the characters. I was never that involved, but I really liked the movies.

I don't regularly watch star wars, i used to really like the older Star Wars movies but episode 1&2 were not all that good and very confusing. So ever since they came out iv lost almost all intrest.

The original Star Wars movies are sci-fi at its best. Episodes One and Two have ceased to exist in my mind for I refuse to acknowledge their existence(except to express now how truly awful they are smilies/wink.gif ). Personally, I really enjoy sci-fi in general and I like to get some of my artistic inspiration from it. Fantasy still leads the way in my heart but there is always room for a wookie and a couple droids as well. smilies/smile.gif

My personal Favorite (of all times) is LOTR. I do enjoy reading the SW books and watching the movies though. but SW doesn't go as in depth as LOTR. you never hear the whole history of SW and the people definetly didn't create whole new languages. Sure they may have invented a word here or there but it can't compare with Tolkeins Quenya. I don't know why people doen't like AOTC. It is my favorite of all the movies. smilies/wink.gif

Star Wars is okay, but I like science fiction and stuff that could have or could be related to real life. Everyone says Star Wars is science fiction, but it doesn't have an ounce of realism. The original three were a joke. Like I said, it's okay.

The old ones were good. Spunky and fun and creative and funny, and the romance was actually romantic. However, with the exception of Ewan MacGregor's performance, in general I think the more recent ones are lame.

I think that Star Wars has a very cool concept (Yoda is my favorite). I think that the originals are the best, but these new ones aren't that bad. truth is, they can't really compete with LotR, movies or books.

I couldn't help noticing what another person said... my love for SW and my love for LotR is much the same as between coke and tea. The former is a good jazz; the latter is a near-spiritual experience. ... it pretty much sums up how I feel about it smilies/smile.gif I love StarWars and my dorm room is pretty much floor to ceiling StarWars paraphenelia (I even own a life-sized cardboard standup of Han Solo), but LOTR was my first love and I somehow feel like the popularity it's gotten recently has made it more "coke" than "tea".
I love both, but I'd rather be an elf than a jedi smilies/rolleyes.gif

Though it is about space, I think I'd like it. But not having seen the films I can't say anything. There have been some recent discovery(ies) of a planet that has two suns that proved some of Star Wars' fictional stuff may be true. Though the connection of the fiction of SW got me curious about the movies, I haven't been able to watch them. Shrug!

I was a Star Wars fan before I ever read LOTR, so in short, yes. Being a Gen Xer I'm most fond of the original trilogy, and Empire has got to be one of the best films ever made.

SW should be watched, LOTR should be read. I can't look at SW books without wincing and I can't really watch the LOTR movies without that either.
PS: good point about coke and tea. Very true. SW is good mild/passing entertainment. LOTR is no less entertaining, but requires a much geater emotional investment from the reader and gives much more back in return.

Very true!
I read the Star Wars novelization in my teens and found it boring. Without the stunning visuals, it came off as mediocre, and rather forgettable story-wise. That's a demonstration of success by a story idea in one presentation medium not carrying over to another. SW was meant as a movie, and was highly effective as such.
It need hardly be said that I think the same true of the LOTR films, whatever the box office takings. There are nuances and ethereal feelings gained from reading the books that cannot (by me at least) be described, much less transcribed.

I watched what's now called Star Wars IV: A New Hope when it originally came out, being then a child, then V and VI. The Empire Strikes Back was for me the best of those three; so I agree with you there, Inziladun. Return of the Jedi wasn't bad; but I still can't understand how a bunch of Ewocks could defeat a legion of Imperial troops... While I enjoy those three, I-III I don't care much for; as I feel there was no attempt to write a proper story. For example, why would the people of a planet vote for a 14 year old as their head of state? :(

I have read from up to the series when Jacen turned into Darth Cadius {spelling?}. I used to be totally hooked on Star Wars books that was ALL i would read. My brother had been watching The legend of the Seeker show and bought Wizards 1st Rule,Stone of Tears, and Blood of the Fold because of it, he never reads no idea why he bought them haha. Anyway i was finished with all the Star Wars that had been wrote up till then so i borrowed Wiz 1st Rule, if you have ever read that book then you know what happend. I had to read them all, so the SOT series got me off of Star Wars back into other Fantasy. I had read Hobbit through ROTK when i was in 8th grade and the Drizzt series up to The Legacy thats aout it. Richard Rahl saved me!! 'Lord Rahl for Emperor'!!!!! Back to the subject yes Star Wars is cool but LOTR is better especially the 1st age stories. I am actually finishing the Third Kingdom i should finish it tonight.(if i get off the computer) lol, I would really recommend the Vector Prime to start with if you havent read many and want jump to the future of the Solo/Skywalker family, not to meantion a awesome storyline with like 15 books in it. Total invasion of the solar system and all. They will make say u wait a minute that cant happen.
