The Golden Ring Marathon is an annual event we shall try to initiate on October 20th 2005. That is the 50th anniversary of the publishing of Return of the King.
The number fifty is perfect, as it is not only a number that comes around once in a century, but also the age at which both Bilbo and Frodo began their journeys.
On that day we plan to gather with friends, relations, other LotR freaks...or just in the company of our beloved Fellowship, to watch all three Extended Edition Lord of the Rings Films, one after the other. smilies/biggrin.gif

This thread has been posted for suggestions and/or thoughts as to this event. Fill it up and spread the word! The more the merrier! smilies/biggrin.gif

Frodo Lives! Revive the slogan!

Ah! So you started the new thread! Well done! I suppose I shall have to put my last comment on the other thread here, too.

As to holidays, we also have Easter/Spring Break. Brits get a lot more holiday time than we do, don't they? (I used to go to a British international school where we got about twice as many holidays as we have here in the US). But something around Oct. 20... I suppose all anyone can really hope for is a Teacher In-Service Day, or perhaps Mid-Term (the 20th is about the time for that, isn't it?).

There it is. For those of you who are new to this discussion, we were talking about the complications involved with the fact that the planned date of the marathon is a school- and work-day (a Wednesday, right?).

Well, I'm sure if some of you have kind of nice teachers, they will let you borrow a TV or something, and watch part of the movie during lunch. I know some of the teachers at my school will probably let me do that, although, by then, I'll probably be at Uni, since I graduate in 2005.

Ah, so we finally have a new home... *stretches out and relaxes* Cozy.

I think Oct 20th of 2005 is on a Thursday... dunno though.. could be Friday, but in any case, I'm almost positive it's a weekday. But oh well! This is FAR more important, right? smilies/biggrin.gif

Well, a lot of sites on Google seem to think it's Wednesday, but considering that next year is Leap Year, it seems like it should be a Thursday... who knows.

Why wouldn't everyone know the difference?

Well, you have a point with "inaugural", but I agree that some people might be confused by the term or not know the difference. You see, "inaugural" means by definition "the first" or the one that sets into motion", whereas "first annual" implies that not only is it the first, but it will be repeated every year. So I think that first annual is probably fine as is.

Elentári
09-01-2003, 12:54 PM
You know, I was thinking maybe we should make it tri-annual instead...because who knows, if this thing carries on for 50 years, we're gonna get sick of watching them over and over and over again...aren't we? smilies/rolleyes.gif smilies/eek.gif smilies/eek.gif smilies/eek.gif
Tri-annual could be good, cos there's three films...ooh and three Elven Rings...ok that's taking it a bit far.
And I had never heard of inaugral, let alone being able to tell the difference!

About those holidays...we certainly don't get all those random days off, and we don't get time off for Thanksgiving...obviously Do we really get that much longer? When do you break up for the summer? We break up at the end of July (23rd or so), unless you go to a private school, in which case I think you break up a couple of weeks earlier.
We have Inset days, which are teachers' training days, so I suppose that's the same as your teacher what-nots.
And that was my reply about holidays!

Arwen Eruantale
09-01-2003, 08:09 PM
we're gonna get sick of watching them over and over and over again...aren't we?

Your kidding right? smilies/eek.gif smilies/biggrin.gif
Do you think that's actually possible?

Elentári
09-02-2003, 04:24 AM
Well...yes actually...*ducks to avoid flying tomatoes* Impossible as it may seem, twenty years hence we will know these films so well we will be able to recite the scripts! Elvish and all! Ooh, wouldn't it be great if this day was made an international holiday?????!!!!!!!
Ok, so I gather a tri-annual Ringday isn't going down too well...oh well...

arianrod

twenty years hence we will know these films so well we will be able to recite the scripts! Elvish and all!

And what if we can do that already? smilies/biggrin.gif Well, I'm still working on the Elvish bits (esp. Aragorn's song for Luthien in the FotR EE), but I'm getting there... smilies/tongue.gif

Elentári
09-02-2003, 12:59 PM
Good grief...I only know a few words, and that's annoying enough for my friends as it is!!! Not that you reciting all three extended editions at a word's notice would be annoying in any way... smilies/wink.gif smilies/biggrin.gif
But I have got as far as attempting to understand the Elvish...not that I'm any good, I can only understand things like 'galad' and 'govannen' !!! (From the Fellowship that is, haven't got the DVD of TTT)

Luthien_ Tinuviel
09-02-2003, 07:23 PM
And what if we can do that already?

Well, I'm close, and I've got some Elvish engraved on my memory as well. ("Frodo... im Arwen.... tellin lethai... lasto beth nin, tolo dan na ngalad"). But yeah... I was lucky enough to find that written down and memorize it, instead of having to listen really carefully.

I don't think I could ever get tired fo them. I've seen FOTR 14 times and TTT 6 times, and I'm not really tired of those yet. I could watch FOTR EE, in particular, many many times without tiring of it. smilies/biggrin.gif And if I can read the books four times without tiring, than I doubt I'll get tired of the movies, either. Especially not ROTK! smilies/biggrin.gif

Elentári
09-03-2003, 08:43 AM
Yeah, ok, ok!!! Well I find I need to read the books over and over again, because for some reason the details filter out of my brain like they pass through a seive. Oh man, I can't wait for ROTK!

Luthien_ Tinuviel
09-03-2003, 10:38 AM
No offense, Elentari, we weren't trying to get after you for saying that or anything, just saying that we wouldn't tire of them. But your opinion is perfectly valid and probably true for some people. No offense taken, I hope? smilies/smile.gif

That would only be a problem if the word in question meant "the only". Saying something in "the first" automatically implies that there will be subsequent occurances of the event.

Think of it this way: it will impress the really smart people, and force everyone who doesn't know what it means to use their dictionary.

Is someone going to get back to me about the school holidays you guys have in America or what???

Hmmm... I thought I did. Here's my post from the last thread:
We get a day off for Columbus day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday (Feb. I think), about a week and a half off for the winter holidays and New Year's, a little less than a week for Thanksgiving (in November), Labor Day (September), and Memorial Day (May). I think that's all we take off for, but we also celebrate Verterans' Day and Presidents' Day without taking school off.

Followed by Brinniel's post...
I get President's Day off. And then I get two weeks off in the winter, one week in the spring, and several other days off spread throughout the year, called Teacher's In Service Day (which means there's a slight chance I might have school off Oct. 20, 2005 and I'll actually be able to participate in the marathon).

There ya go, Elentári! ^_^

I just had an idea! We should all invite Tolkien newbies (friends you have that haven't seen the EE yet) over to our houses to experience the LotRness with us. And we can serve Lembas as appetizers! ^_^

Elentári

Hehehe, thanks...and when do you break up for the summer hols, and when do you go back?? (For me, it's around the 23rd July, and go back on the 4th September- this year anyway. Private schools break up a couple of weeks earlier and go back a couple of days before us).

How on earth do you make lembas???

Just gather in your home, or a fellow addicts (perhaps with a bigger screen smilies/evil.gif) to do it. smilies/biggrin.gif

I would let you all come here, since my Dad has a dedicated home theatre with a 5x8 foot screen (oh yess, lifesize Gollum.) and a sound system that sounds better than any theatre we've ever ben to... but I don't think my parents would appreciate that too much. smilies/biggrin.gif

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups of flour
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 Tablespoons cold butter (1 stick)
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2/3 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Honey or maple syrup for dipping

Preheat over to 425 degrees.

Mix flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
Add butter and mix with a fork or pastry cutter until mixture looks like fine granules.
Add sugar and cinnamon and mix.
Add milk and vanilla and stir with a fork until dough forms.
(You can add a little bit more milk than the recipe calls for if it gets too hard to stir.)

Roll into balls and place on cookie sheet, mashing them out until they are about 1/2 inch thick and 3 inches across.
Makes about 12 – 14.
Bake for about 12 minutes or until insides aren't gooey.

Wrapped in mallorn leaves they will stay fresh indefinitely. Wrapped in plastic wrap they are good for about a week.
Delicious dipped in honey or syrup.

Another point- sugar cookies? What the heck are they? When I say cookies (as a Brit), I mean those round thingies that are kinda firm and crunchy on the outside, and almost gooey on the inside (well not literally). They have bits stuck in them like smarties. When I say bisuits, I mean things like English tea biscuits, digestives, canary creams (I mean custard creams...ahem smilies/tongue.gif), bourbons, jammy dodgers. Cookies as a rule are generally a hell of a lot bigger, and they don't necessarily have a defined shape (like a cuboid or something). Am I making any sense at all? I fear not. Oh well...

WOOO HOOO!!! (C Celeborn),

Richard Taylor said that "It would be highly unlikely that they wouldn't be interested" and that they would consider using their cinema in Mirimar to host a screening of all three movies, one after the other, how cool is THIS!!!!?

So we may have a entire day to our crazy Tolkienite selves. I just have to keep in touch with WETA and keep them updated on anything new that we want to do, and yeah....

Ok, I have a few ideas. First off, the Ent draught. What about that new 7up stuff?? The one with caffeine? It's green!!! Perfect for Ent draught!
And I'm thinking about e-mail TORn about this Marathon, and maybe if enough of us e-mail them, they will say something about it on their site. For those of you who don't have it, here's the link: TORn (http://www.theonering.net)
If they would mention it in one of their daily update things, imagine how many people it would reach?? And I'm about to post about it on another really big message board I go to at Council of Elrond (http://www.councilofelrond.com). Let the world know: FRODO LIVES!!!!

yes!! I did it!!!!! They posted it at TORn for me!! Here's what they said:
The people over at Barrowdowns have come up with an idea to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of ROTK, on October 20, 2005. Basically, to make it a worldwide day to gather with friends, watch the movies, and geek out on Tolkien as much as possible. [More] Thanks to Arwen 1858 for the link

Yay! We're on TORN! Arwen, it has your name! Don't you feel special?!?! That is so cool!!!!!! Do you know what we should do? If (or more like when) we get the greenlight or maybe even publicity from New Line (after Richard Taylor mentions it to them), then it will be even cooler! We could take the Tolkien community by storm! Join a million messageboards and promote it there! Get TORN to post something again about how it's backed by New Line! Can you tell I'm having a most excellently happy daydream? Ah, yes. And think of the free publicity the Barrowdowns will get! Maybe people will follow the link and join or something (maybe we'll be famous, wishful thinking there).

TORN has a lot of power. It is by far the biggest LOTR fanclub/newsite online. If the New Line could release the three movies again in different theaters, it could make a big profit. People in two years would much like to see the movies on the big screen again. It is an absolutely amazing thing, they could even play the extended ROTK. There would also be the "BIG PARTY" spots as well. Or maybe it could be on a limited release.

How about on the Day, we all go on the chatroom and have a mass internet celebration (heh heh, kelebration..ummm...ignore me please) I'm sure Mr. BW won't mind, and we can all talk and celebrate together, except, us Kiwi's get to do it twice becaus when we finish it'll just be starting for some of you. Do you live in NZ, Morgul Queen??? Cool!! Anyways, the chatroom thing would be nice, only how would we have time for that with watching all 3 EE movies, eating a few meals, playing games, and whatever else we're doing?? That would be kinda hard to fit in. We should definitely get on there the next day, though, and talk about what all we did!! This is going to be fun!! Too bad we have so long to wait! Oh well.

Next day sounds good.... but then we could just post on this thread. The guests could either make their own comments, or else just stuff themselves with lembas (can you tell I'm inviting Merry and Pippin? All of my imaginary friends will be there, in fact. All eleven of them. I know, only eleven, well, no, twelve, actually. I'll get more sooner or later. Did anyone read eleven as elven and have to re-read it figure out what I said?). Now, one thing we could do to kelebrate: Do the Wave for Boromir the Disco King! Wave kings at Boromir the Disco Squid! We should have weird disco parties with the LOTR Soundtracks or something! (Ignore me as well, if you would be so kind). And one more thing: We should get the BW to put it on the calendar. You know, the little thing at the top of the homepage that has any notable events that occured today.

Luthien_ Tinuviel
11-08-2003, 01:54 PM
I've tried to make a mass family tree. Not sure if I ever truly accomplished it, though. And you're right, Morgul Queen, there are a lot of cousins marrying cousins and things, even among hobbits. But then it's generally third cousins or something, so I don't reckon that's quite as bad. Why don't we all try to create mass elven genealogies and hang on the walls as decorations? Along with meanings of all the names, perhaps? Or giving everyone their names in both Sindarin and Quenya (where applicable)? Can you tell I'm trying to scare any potential guests away? Although at this rate, I may not have any guests at all (any guests that a normal person would call real, anyway).

Well, I ran a Google search for "Golden Ring Marathon", and it only yields four results! Which is weird. Why does it only show TORN and this thread if you all siad that you had posted it only other Tolkien fora? Indeed strange.

Arwen and Morgul Queen, it sounds like you two know each other. Even though you don't know me as well, can Neal go to the premiere, too? He'd love to accompany you, and he'd only cause minimal trouble (read: be rather annoying unless you think he's funny, be sarcastic all the time, perhaps get rather annoyed if any major changes have been made, and maybe even lecture your friends (I assume that mini-balrogs are very easy to engage in a fight with)). In short, he'd be the perfect companion!

Now back on-topic: Do you think we should try to publicize it now, or should we work out the details and figure out exactly what we want to do, perhaps wait for word to get to PJ, and then adveritze it? It might be a rather premature suggestion, but if we got sophisticated enough in our planning, we might even be able to make a geocities website for it or something.

I'm sure that if WETA knows about it, word will quickly get to PJ. WETA seems to be taking it seriously (or at least I hope they are) and if they really are, then they will let PJ know if it's to be an event of some magnitude.

Personally, I think it would be best to get word out as quickly and widespread as possible. I mean, just this forum could cover the globe....which is an awesome concept.

A website is an excellent suggestion. smilies/biggrin.gif Though the concept of the marathon is still a bit premature for me to see the neccesity of it's own website at this point. Perhaps in the future though... And if Mr. Jackson likes the idea we might be able to tack it onto the LotR offical site. Wouldn't that be great?

Does anyone think it'd be a good idea to contact SotR? They're a pretty popular site as well, and I do believe they too, have a forum...

I'm assuming that anything official is going to be held in New Zealand. *sniff* *single little tear*. Which I'm sure is fine with anyone lucky enough to live there. Sigh. I would say that anything done by a contributor to this thread is "official". We are the originators of the idea, after all. I'm not sure if there's really any one person who could be said to have created the idea (I actually went back the beginning and looked, it seems that several people mentioned it and it just grew from there). Although credit is definately due to Arwen Eruantale for starting both this thread and the old one.

I think if we ever get this show on the road (in a figurative sense), we should try to get it done in cities around the world. Perhaps have BDers organize the events in their respective home towns, that way, everyone already knows what they're doing, and even non-Tolkien fans can enjoy themselves too. That would be a perfect idea. If we came up with schedules, deadlines, etc. here at the Downs, then each one of us could go and try to organize it in our hometowns or schools (with the cooperation of the right authorities of course!).

smilies/tongue.gif A lovely Frodo impresssion, M'lady...

I also would love to see it become a yearly celebration, but am not sure how *official* we could make that, as it may not be as easy to organise something of that magnitude in each country across the world.

I am thinking of talking to some of the people at the theatre where I work, when the time comes. And perhaps we could use one, or more of the screens for it, but Arizona is pretty far from most of you I imagine... *hmmm..*

If PJ could hear about it and agree that it's a good idea, I think it would be easier to persuade cinemas and stuff...because maybe New Line would do some marketing or something? I suspect the cinemas would take that a lot more seriously than a bunch of freaks like us... smilies/rolleyes.gif

I'm sure that some of the cast & crew from LotR MUST read the barrowdowns. How could they not?

Wow... I finally understand what the advert in people's sigs means... I never new there was a thread. I'll have to bar my doors against my friends and make them pay to see the extended editions at my house. I'm the only one who's gonna own all three EEs! The others all own atleast one non-EE LotR, and I'm pretty sure they won't re-buy it for the EE... unless they are truly LotR freaks! Wait... that would be a good thing!

Celebrimbror and I (yes, he was baring his teeth again, I actually ended uo writing 'They go to not run...' in an exam because of him, I also wrote 'And the Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in purest shimmering samite held aloft excalibur from the water, signifying that, by Divine Provenance, I, Athur was to be King. THAT is why I am your King!' when asked to define Divine Right *snort*) are currently trying to get a Mini-abyss for him.

Anyway, Back on Topic. I'm sure we'll find some way of publisising this. I'lll ring up my local radio station (91 ZM) nearer the date, and I'll put a note in the 'Paper. Most likely sometime next year.

Not very many points...basically get your friends around or something and watch the EEs on 20th October 2005...and then every year after that.

(I have my Balrog, he is called Bombur...I've been trying to tame him...at first he would go into a huff if you didn't say hello to him, or if you did he'd burn things up (like my geography coursework...oops). But now he only burns things up if you don't say hello...
But I must say, he does consume rather a lot of food for a mini-Balrog...)

Don't worry about Bombur, He'll calm down after you feed him for a bit...wait, you are feeding him RAW eggs, aren't you? Cooked ones make them cranky. Fangirls help too. *MQ attempts to grab a few fangirls off of Celebrimbror who then attempts to bite her hands off - see, people, action - reaction - but she grabs some anyway*

Here have some, fangiiiiiiiiiiiirls!!! *MQ runs as Celebrmbror chases her around the computer room*

Greetings to one and all.

I arrive here after meeting Morgul Queen at TOR.net party for return of the ringers this evening.

I am very excited to hear of the planned celebrations for the coming 50th anniversary of the publishing of The Return of the King, and am looking forward to assisting in anyway possible.

So we need to figure out the basics who what why when how where etc

When is the Date Oct 20th 2005

Why is the 50th anniversary of RoTK

Who? who is going to attend?

Where? we will do this ?

What? What we will do there?

How? How will we organise things?

Ideas everyone? i'll post someof my own in the next day or so

Who: Basically all the Ringer friends you have
Where: At your house or whatever, unless by some stroke of amazing fortune we are able to get this at the cinema...
What: Watch the EEs back-to-back!
How we will organise it: I don't know, on this thread?

Finwe

Most likely, we'll have to organize it here. I don't think that many of us can meet in RL, and actually plan it. This would be the easiest way.

Thanks so much, Morgul Queen, and everyone else who's been working so hard to get the word out! I saw the article on TORn, and could hardly believe it. We're official!

Oh, and remember earlier, when we were discussing different ideas to make ent draught? I have an idea. Seeing that Tolkien described ent draught as just being water with a "savour" or different taste to it, I came up with this:

ENT DRAUGHT

~1 can white cranberry juice concentrate
~Water
~Sprite, or some similar lemon-lime soda

Prepare cranberry juice as directed on can. Add one extra can of water (this is based on preference; if you want it more watered down or more potent, change the amount of extra water added). Add half a cup of Sprite. Stir, and refrigerate. This is a less, ah, volatile version of the drink; you won't grow unless you drink it all in one go. smilies/wink.gif

Hey, Sapphire, that's a good idea! We would all have to prove that we were on this thread, though. But we could issue official badges or something and get in free! Maybe. If it turns into a really big event, such as sanctioned by PJ, showing in theaters, possibly with TORN involved and conventions and so forth, then we could all get in free (and be famous! Everyone start writing your speeches). But so far, it's free for all of us, since it'll be at our houses. Unless you count the cost of the DVDs and food, but that doesn't really count, does it? We'll all have the DVDs by them anyway (most likely).

Hey, yeah! Kewl idea, Laitoste! We should have *official* t-shirts or something. What kind of design do you think would work? Or maybe different ones depending on your "alligence": black/silver for Gondor, green/white for Rohan, black/red for Mordor, blue or green/silver for the Elves, green/yellow for the Shire... Sorry if this is totally random, but I don't have time to read over this whole thread.
Thing is, it would be possible for me to get one independant cinema to participate for definate, another independant that would think about it, and the UGC who I can talk to. And as the UGC is a chain, it'd go over the whole country.
This might be totally not what you had in mind, but am willing to go meet with them if it's at all useful.

Is there any way of contacting the main Cinemark company? Nearly every city in the US has a Cinemark theater, and if either we or WETA manage to reach the main company, who, in turn tell all their theaters, it would save us a LOT of trouble.

Lossentilien
12-13-2003, 03:55 PM
Big cinemas will be harder to convince unless you happen to have a contact directly- or through someone else. If you want to contact a major cinema but don't know anyone there it would be best to write up a proposal saying what the idea is and why it'd be great for the cinema to run.
But if WETA did agree they'd have a lot more influence over it.
I'll find out a bit more for y'all and post it when I can.

I suppose what we could do is set up "centers" in each country, run by a BDer, who makes the shirts. Then, the other BDers who live in that country can order it from their "local center." That would eliminate the snarkiness of having to order it internationally, because customs declarations, forms, etc. would have to be involved.

Laitoste
12-24-2003, 08:54 PM
What I was thinking was that someone could design the t-shirt, somehow send the design to those who want it, and we each could make our own t-shirt with fabric paint, embroidery (If you're really ambitious, not like me smilies/evil.gif ), whatever. I think that would be the easiest. Sorry about my last post, it was cut short because I got kicked off the computer. There was more that I wanted to say, but I forgot.

Ok, that BD 'centre' (yes, it's centre...did you Americans drop your dictionary when you sailed over there?! Nah- just kidding...) sounds scary...not too keen on everyone knowing my address and stuff, and I'm not sure other BD's will want to give out their's...
Laitoste's idea sounds good. That'd be easiest, and our t-shirts would be kind of exclusive then...in the years to come we'll be famous...*sighs*. Ok, I'll shut up now...it's 5:47am on Christmas morning. I ought to be in bed! Only I can't sleep and I forgot to make my parents a Christmas card...

I think that's a better idea too. I suppose we could come up with an official website or something for the Golden Ring Marathon, but I'll have to delegate that duty to someone else because I'm horribly illiterate when it comes to making websites. At best, I can make a Geocities website. That's where my talents end. smilies/biggrin.gif

dancing spawn of ungoliant

An official website would be cool. Though I can't make such a thing either. If Morgul Queen (or everybody who has doodled/ drawn images) could send a pic or some kind of model of the logo and then we could print it and make our own shirts (or scarves or bags or what ever).
...Pretty much like other people have already said. So I agree that this could be the easiest way to get an own shirt.

Golden Ring Marathon scarf! Excellent! I think a Geocities website is about all we would end up with anyway. I mean, it would be kind of costly for someone to buy a domain for our project that doesn't really have any backing.... yet. The making and distribution of the image ofr everyone to personalize and use on memorabilia sounds like the best approach. Oh, and I still love the Golden Ring Marathon idea, but if you all don't mind, I'm going to stop advertising it in my signature for now. In summer 2005 we can all put it back in, but for the meantime I think we need to get some major planning underway before we do anymore advertisement.

Finwe

Luthien_ Tinuviel
12-28-2003, 06:11 PM
I don't know. I guess we should try to get theaters interested, if possible. Hopefully Morgul Queen will be able to contact PJ and all. We could maybe think about various activities or something that could give a kind of unity to the event. Maybe we could have some sort of moment where everyone in each timezone does something at the same time, or else at the same time in each time zone (ie, at three o'clock Greenwich Mean Time, three o'clock US Central Time, etc).

Has anyone realized how much of the day the marathon will take up? It might end up being as much as 12 hours, maybe more, counting all three EEs, breaks between them, and possible events.

Finwe
12-28-2003, 07:19 PM
I have an idea.

Couldn't we ask one of our local universities if we could "borrow" or "rent" a lecture room for a day, so that we could do the Golden Ring Marathon? Many of us are going to be in uni by then, and thus, might be able to get to the "people in charge." I suppose if we offer to turn over part of our profits (if we get profits from selling tickets, refreshments, etc.) to the university, they might let us use a lecture hall. That way, we can show the movies and do other activities (board games, anyone?). I know that the seats in some lecture halls are notoriously uncomfortable, but I'm sure we could figure something out.

Luthien_ Tinuviel
12-28-2003, 07:24 PM
Good idea, Finwe. Thing is, do may of us have many friends we would want to invite? I only have a few. But would a university allow the general public to come in for the showing? Depends on which one, I guess.

I suppose they might, once they see the magnitude of our idea. It would give them a LOT more publicity and perhaps some extra profits on the side if we sell things there.

If we asked some English professors (the ones involved with Medieval English, Medieval legends (Beowulf, etc.), Anglo-Saxon languages/peoples, etc.), I bet they might even give short presentations/lectures on some of the influences on Tolkien's mythos.

Lossentilien
12-31-2003, 03:22 PM
Wow, that'd be amazing. If this really gets off the ground, maybe some of the cast/crew would be willing to participate. Assuming they had the time that is...
Plus if cinema's are involved, there's bound to be a few people with contacts, there are here anyway, so I'd imagine places like London would as well. And they could possibly run some kind of film talks about book to screen adaptions etc. technical process. There'd be a lot of interest in that...

Luthien_ Tinuviel
12-31-2003, 04:36 PM
Thing is, in lecture halls, anyway, I don't think we'd be allowed to charge admission, because we're not New Line, and there are all of the copyright laws and stuff. So we'd have to sell refreshments, and maybe take donations to help pay for the rent of the room or something like that.

Finwe
01-01-2004, 12:47 PM
Oh, right, that's true. I suppose we could make some money selling refreshments. But I bet if we manage to talk to New Line, we could work something out. It's not as if the money is going for our personal profit or anything. It's going towards the rent of the room. Another possibility is, if we manage to scrape up the money somehow, we might be able to get one of those convention places. There's PLENTY of room there.

Elentári_O_Most_Mighty_1
01-01-2004, 01:18 PM
Erm...what are convention places? (I'm sorry I sound so ignorant...but there aren't any around here as far as I'm aware). There's a University near me, and plenty of people in my school are into LOTR, though the number into it on my scale are...um...non-existent. Except maybe one? But yeah...there's a Uni near us, so if we could get this up and running it'd be cool. But how would we project the films? Would we be using projectors like in a cinema, or just a tv screen?! I think we should keep the number of places few to make more chance of actually meeting the costs of renting the hall. If we get too many places then participation will be low and we'll all lose out. So key areas with high accessibilty are important. I.e. motorway and rail links are darn useful...man, this could get to be a very big project! As long as we get it off the ground, that is...but also, coming to think of it, it'll be a weekday. And there is no way everyone is going to bunk off school... smilies/rolleyes.gif I think we might have to push it forward to the weekend or something. What say you?

Finwe
01-01-2004, 03:45 PM
That's true.

The places that I was referring to are actually called Convention Centers, and most big cities usually have them. They're like auditoriums (sort of), and things like ComicCon are held there.

Luthien_ Tinuviel
01-01-2004, 04:22 PM
Yeah, I know what you're talking about, Finwe. I wasn't actually aware of them until I heard about one on the radio the other day, and thought, "Oh, so that's where they hold all of the conventions!" smilies/redface.gif (Embarassed smiley). But wouldn't it cost a lot to rent a convention center? And Elentari's right, it might be better to do it on the preceeding weekend (or the following one), even though the date is a great idea, because we'd probably end up with a large percentage of high school and college students, who won't be able to easily take a day off school.

Lathriel
01-02-2004, 07:38 PM
Another reason why you would want to move it to a weekend. Some people who live farther away from a certain location do have to get there.
As a highschool student you always have the parent problem.
They are probably thinking, oh why has my child gone so crazy? What have I done to deserve this.
I actually think my mom is getting to this point!
besides my mom would never let me go during a school day.

Hmmm... quite true. Perhaps what we could do is have the nice, big, "commercial" one on the weekend (preceding or following, we can decide that later), but have a small, private one, individually, on the actual weekday. That way, we can feel like we've celebrated in a group, but still celebrated on the day itself. We could issue Middle-earth-ish "guides" or something, for the individual Golden Ring Marathons.

Is it to late for me to join? (I hope not!) I would love to get involved with this, and I can do some basic web design, although nothing too fancy, if we want to have a site. Actually, domain names aren't that expensive- I've seen where you can get them for around $15/year (US). Also, the guy who did all the elvish, Khuzdul, Adunaic, Old English, etc. translations for the movies, David Salo, lives in my city. I've met him once and could possibly get him to help.

Excellent...once you've sorted out getting those pics onto the forum, I WANNA SEE THE RUNNING RING PIC!!! (Read: the Orli pics... smilies/evil.gif ). But of course I want to see the Running Ring pic too...so important to our little group.

I think we should make a list of people who are involved in this now.

EDIT:
Ok, here we go:
People who have expressed an interest:

 ArathorofBarahir
 Cinderella
 Elennar Starfire
 ElentariGreenleaf
 Enorëiel
 Frodo2968thewhite
 Helín Anyára
 Kyle
 Lathiriel
 lore_master
 Nora
 Sauron_the_Abhorred
 The Great Shadowfax
 THE Ka
 The Only Real Estel

People who have contributed in some way to the running of this event and should be interested in continuing to do so:

 Aramantha_Daisy
 arianrod
 Arwen Eruantale (are you still out there?!)
 Arwen1858
 dancing spawn of ungoliant
 Elentári (me)
 elfearz1
 Finwe
 Laitoste
 Lossentilien
 Luthien_Tinuviel
 middleearthguy
 Morgul Queen
 Orominuialwen
 Sapphire_Flame

I've put both lists into alphabetical order, so as not to offend any one- sad to have to do so, but still.

If anyone wants to swap lists, just say. Not that this is in any way binding or something- it's just that we really ought to get organised...

I'm viewed as a contributor? I'm flattered! smilies/biggrin.gif Elentari's right. We really do need to get organized. I hope this doesn't turn out like so many other projects I've participated in: great ideas, and nothing is ever done about them. Morgul Queen, any more word from New Line and all that? I know Richard Taylor expressed an interest, but have you actually been able to follow up and get ahold of PJ & Co? I think the posters would be a good idea, Sapphire. I wish I had a store like that in my neighborhood.

Hmmm... if we somehow got in contact with David Salo, through Orominuialwen, would that help? I have a feeling that having the backing of a recognized Tolkien "expert" would shoot our credibility up quite a few points. Of course, the more experts the better, and if we can get WETA into this as well, it would be absolutely perfect.

Thanks Elentári about that list! So there are quite many people in this project smilies/smile.gif

If WETA got interested in this idea, they could maybe advertise it on their own homepage. I have put a link to this thread to a Finnish Tolkien site so I hope we can get more people involved.

Oro, that would be really cool if we could get David Salo interested; a Tolkien expert backing could definitely help credibility.

To the people considering a website, I also know a few things about web design (not like I'm an expert or anything), but I could help out if need be. smilies/smile.gif

Maybe we need to arrange some committees for this: Advertising, Web Crew, Contacts, etc. Could help things run smoother, you know.

I will try to contact David Salo, at some point, although I have finals coming up, so it may not be until after those are done. He and his wife have a website which can be found here (http://www.yarinareth.net/). If you would like to e-mail him, click on Caveat Lector, and then click on Email David. The one time I have met him, I asked whether he had heard of the 'Downs, but he said he hadn't. He does know the guy who runs Ardalambion, though. Oh and btw, for all you mini-Balrog owners, I figured out how to say "Shut up or I'll sic my Balrog on you!" in french. smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/wink.gif It's "Fermez la bouche ou je vais te siccer mon Balrog!" if your Balrog is male, and if it's female, you replace "mon Balrog" with "ma Balrog" PM me if you want to know how to pronounce it (I'm too lazy to write it out phoneticaly at the moment).

Me too, but then we do have a while...

It will have to be more than one location, because we are all scattered across continents!!!

Committees are a good idea. We need a list of things we must do, then assign tasks (or people volunteer- as long as everything gets done).

EDIT: 6th page!!!

And Orominuialwen, thanks for that! I assume you mean vomit...lol, you missed off the 'k' on the end!

Yeah, good point Elentari; definitely need multiple locals. Somewhere central in each country would be best.

Okay, committees. (I'm good at this; my mom has to set up committees all the time for her work.) Here are some we'll definitely need:

Advertising
Web Design
Celebrity/Expert Contacts
Continuity
General Planning

If anyone thinks of any other committees we might need, please post them for consideration. It might be a good idea to "elect" a chairperson too; someone in charge overall to report to and who keeps track of everything. If this is going to be a big deal, we want it to be well organized, not a big mess! smilies/wink.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Elentári_O_Most_Mighty_1
01-09-2004, 08:24 AM
Yeah, I think it might be a good start if we actually knew what the different committees are meant to do!
I don't know if I'd be any use...I'd probably be best on the website thing- if someone can teach me how to make a website!!! But I could do writing and stuff and design stuff to go on the site, I suppose.

Ok, chairperson. Any nominations? I think we ought to use the system where one person nominates and another person seconds it- but it is subject to the nominee agreeing to stand. We'll give it a few days, then vote. How does that sound?

Sapphire_Flame
01-09-2004, 01:33 PM
what would the Continuity Committee do?
Just keep everything straight, make sure everyone has the correct information. Like the Running Ring; we'll just want the one design, right? Continuity would make sure all the logos and whatnot are kept the same, so people will know the *official* Golden Marathon stuff. Plus, it prevents confusion. smilies/wink.gif

And Elentari, the nominating/seconding thing sounds good for deciding the chairperson. After a few days, people will vote. How about the 16th?

Due to parental constraints, as of now, I'm not quite sure if I can devote enough time to the project, to see it through to its full potential. In other words, don't nominate me unless you absolutely want to, because I'll probably only be free starting from Aug '05, since that's when I'll start college, and my parents won't be fussing about the time I spend on the computer.

I've E-mailed WETA several times but have yet to get a response, so I'll try Ian McKellen. He's always been great at helping us Fans out.

Awww, thanks Morgul Queen!!! *beams happily*
I think Morgul should definitely be on the contacts committee, without a doubt.

I'm in doubt as to whether I should nominate Sapphire Flame or Luthien Tinuviel...hmmm, a toughie. I think either we have two chairpeople, or we have a chairperson and a vice, or two chairpeople and a vice (no hang on, maybe not the latter). That takes a bit of responsibility off the main chairperson if they go on holiday, or if they need a second opinion on deciding something- but we should all chip in where we can.

Ahh, I finally found the original thread where this idea was spawned! This might seem just a tad unnecessary, but not knowing where it was was bugging me, and at least we can have all the info together on one thread...uh, yeah. smilies/rolleyes.gif And if we're especially bored, we can try to work out exactly whose idea this was. Morgul Queen
01-12-2004, 01:39 AM
It was actually through the Silm that I ensnared her. I had drawn a picture that night....of Luthien dancing in Doriath....and had typed out the 'Song of beren and Luthien' that is in LotR. She adored the picture, fell in love with the poem, and before you could say 'Hey dol! Merry dol! Ring a dong dillo!' I had her reading LotR. Now that she knows that the Tale of Luthien and Beren is in the Silm she's reading that, and because the Lay is in 'The Lays of Beleriand' she's buying that...and I'm stealing it smilies/wink.gif

....of course, it was probably the fact that she was drunk when I showed her the poem that made her read it. smilies/biggrin.gif

So what do you lot say about having ActionFigure!Sauron's Ring as a mascot?

I don't mind being on the General Planning Committee. I think I could most likely follow through with something of that nature, I just don't think that I'd be able to live up to my potential if I were chairperson.

Luthien_ Tinuviel
01-13-2004, 09:12 PM
I tried a while back to figure out who exactly started the thing as well. Quite hard, really, although I would attribute the choosing of the date and the naming of the project to Arwen Eruantale and arianrod, respectively (who both seem to have disappeared).

I've been giving this a lot of thought recently, and I generally go back and forth from two extremes: I either feel like we can't really do anything much, because we're mostly a bunch of high schoolers, or else I think that it will exceed everyone's wildest expectations and we will have created a phenomenon similar to the Trilogy Showings. I figure that it really isn't an impediment that we're (or will be, by the time 2005 rolls around) a bunch of high school and college students, since that's basically the group which will end up attending.

The other thing is, how will we order the functioning of the committees? It seems to me that it will work out somewhat like this:

Celebrity/Expert Contacts- Top priority, for now. Once we have sufficient backing, we can really get somewhere.

Advertising-This comes next, and it seems that whoever's in charge of advertising will have a lot of responsibility, and need access to a lot of different advertising venues. They would have to be willing to wear t-shirts and such promoting the project, and probably join as many Tolkien messageboards as they could and start threads telling about the project.

Web Design-This would tie into advertising, and we'd need to have a webpage that tells about the project, has a picture of the logo and the mascot, and possibly a way for people to contact the chairpeople, and things about various activities. Eventually it would have info about the various locations and such.

Continuity-These people would end up making sure that everything's running smoothly, and check up on what's happening and making sure that everyone's on track with what needs to be done, possibly goal-setting and calendar-keeping and such.

General Planning-I think this would end up basically as the brain-storming committee, the group that decides what will be done and when, and how and so forth, as well as polishing the project with games and activities and such.

Those are just my ideas on how things would shake out, of course with the chairpeople basically overseeing the project and helping where it's needed. I think the chairpeople would become the "public faces" if this really gets big. And we all might have to become the directors of the project in our area. If anyone thinks differently, feel free to add to my list or whatever.

EDIT: I think we need two or three chairpeople, just to keep everything in order and get some good discussion and different opinions and such. Plus, if there ends up being a lot of work, it would need to be distributed evenly, and having several chairpeople allows for different talents and skills to be employed by each one.

Very well said, Luthien! smilies/biggrin.gif Huzzah for such a well thought out outline.

Yes, it would be a good idea to have two or three chairs. Elentari, Luthien, and myself seem to be the only ones getting nominated, so we can either 1) keep the nominations open, or 2) just stop here and narrow it to two chairpeople, or 3) just stop here and have three chairpeople, as we have three main nominees.

With multiple chairpeople, it would be a bit easier, as each one would be in charge of one or two specific committees, and then the three would all conference instead of one person trying to handle everything. This would also work better if, as Luthien mentioned, this becomes something really huge and the chairs become the "faces" of the Marathon.

So, unless anyone has any objections, we could stop the nominations here and just go with Elentari, Luthien, and me. Please post your thoughts on this.

That sounds like it would work out nicely. In fact, it was sort of what I was hoping for: a nice distribution, so that everyone's happy and no one's swamped with responsibility.

I suppose we might as well start with the ordering of the individual committees, and the signing up and all, since that seems to be what everyone is doing. As long as no one objects and everyone who's really active on the thread has had a chance to comment, I think we might as well proceed from here using Sapphire's idea.

Now, I have some LOTR friends from another corner of the Web that I might draw over, and if things work out, we might have ourselves someone who would be willing and quite able to work on the website (she's really good!). But we shall see about that.

As to fan sites, I'm almsot positive that that would become the job of the Advertising Team. So if you're interested in joining a couple other forums and leading a discussion about the GRM there, and linking back to here, then you might consider joining the Advertising committee.

Hey, everyone, I found a thread that has scared me a little: 2004 Marathon showing (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=002639#000010). It may be just a rumor (I hope so!), but it may actually be something that's going to happen. If this was the case, what would we do? We could proceed as normal, but our grandness would probably be somewhat dimmed if there had already been an EE Trilogy Showing the year before. And if it's true, then we have much less of a chance of gaining New Line and PJ's support. I'll do some research, and see if I can find any evidence to support the claim.

That is scary. But no one seems to know anything about it.
You know, I was seriously thinking about my earlier suggestion that this does not become annual but instead bi-annual or even tri-annual...because seriously guys, it's not like they are new flms coming out each year, and I don't think there will be enough of us fanatics to be able to uphold the costs of renting out lecture rooms and the like each year...sure enough we ought to get good attendance the first time round, but I don't think people are going to be willing to do it so often. And the planning is going to be hell anyway. What do you think? Not that I want to put a damper on it, but still... smilies/frown.gif

Yeah... It would be pretty hard to pay for all the stuff every year unless we find someone who will give us a LOT of money. I guess we should just concentrate on our first one and then see how well it does before deciding about future events.

Yes, you've got a fairly good point there. I think that the only way that we could carry through with this, if we do it at all, is if we do one every year, or something like that. Kind of like the way the Tolkien Society does their Entmoot thing. Perhaps some really dedicated folks will come along, and help us out. It could be possible.

Hey guys! sorry I haven't been here in a while smilies/redface.gif

What spiffy new ideas have we (or should I say you)
come up with while I was away?

Well, we're thinking of setting up committees to deal with the different aspects of running this event...and me, Luthien and Sapphire are chair-hobbit/elves!
But that's about it, I'm afraid...we're basically trying to recruit people to the different committees.

Well, I posted a thread on LaWiseWoman, so we'll hopefully get some help from there and...um...yeah.

*sighs* I'll try and talk to the manager at Hoyts Theatres. But it may be a bit better if I wait for a while 'til we have the whole thing a little more clearly defined, OK?

Well, Elfearz...is there anything you're particulalry good at? Such as websites or designing...etc. Otherwise we'll dump you in a group that no one wants to be in. smilies/tongue.gif

And that reminds me...what's happened to the Running Ring???!!!

Hi all! Our "exam week" is starting at school and I'm quite busy next two weeks but after that I could probably do something. Unfortunately I'm not really good at any tasks listed on the previous page. smilies/frown.gif
If I had to choose, I'd pick advertising but there's always this problem that I'm not a native English speaker.

Well what is your first language? Maybe we can find someone on this site who speaks the same language and he/she can help you out.

My first languange is Finnish but I doubt that there aren't too many Finns here.
Maybe it's better that I don't join any comittee but if you need general opinions about something, I could tell my view (if anyone's interested smilies/wink.gif )

I'm sorry, I don't have any contacts with anyone famous and I'm not very "computer savvy" smilies/confused.gif , but I'm pretty good at drawing or designing. I also have a scanner and a computer program that spiffys up scanned pictures a bit, so if you need help with that, I'll be willing. smilies/smile.gif

So the Running Ring is the design we'll be putting on the t-shirts? Maybe we could have the Barrow-Downs symbol on the front and on the back put the Running Ring and:

Golden Ring Marathon!
October 20th, 2005!

That's just an idea...

*sighs* I know, I know...I'm waiting too, but Robyn hasn't sent it to me yet. But I go back to college on Thursday...and I'm doing NCEA Level 1 now so that'll take up a lot of my time.

Oh, and before I forget, 20th of October 2005. The Golden Ring Marathon is written on the inside of the drawing so we don't have to worry about adding that in...we just have to print 'www.barrowdowns.com' below it and we're all sweet.

BTW, it's nice to see so many Kiwi accents in Hollywood nowadays smilies/wink.gif (Go Hard, Pete)

well, I have a website. *scratches head* you can check it out and determine if it's good. Otherwise I don't really care what group I'm in. *shrugs*
