Custard Pie is very Old-world. I can type it up if you are interested. Are you doing a whole dinner, or just dessert? I posted a recipe for "Hobbit Pocketses" (meat pies without a pie plate). My son & I liked them, but my husband said they stunk.

I might be able to think up some Middle-Earth Decorations, given time.

There were some good recipes and entertaining Ideas on this thread.Concerning Hobbits (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000391)

And Starbreeze had done a middle-earth dinner before, and will have some good ideas.

I have a recipe for Honey Cake from a "hobbit" cookbook

Honey Cakes

1 cup honey
1 cup sugar
1 cup butter
2 eggs
5 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 cup minced orange peel
3/4 cup lemon peel
2 tsp ginger
2 tsp cinnamon

Warm honey & sugan together stirring until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and mix in butter until melted. Cool to room temperature. Beat in eggs one at a time. Sift together flour, baking powder & soda, ginger & cinnamon. Add to honey mixture along with lemon & orange peel. chill dough. Pat out dough on lightly floured surface to 1/4inch thickness. Cut into rounds & bake at 400 on a greased cookie sheet for 5-8 min. Makes about 70.

Custard Pie

3 eggs
3/4 cups sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg or cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups scalded milk

Heat oven to 375. Prepare pastry. In large bowl, beat eggs. Add sugar, salt, nutmeg, and vanilla; mix well. Blend in hot milk. Pour into pastry-lined 9-inch pie pan. bake @375 for 45-60 min or until knife incerted near center comes out clean. Cool. Serve sightly warm, or chilled.

I use an already-made crust. It is the simplest pie in the world!

Apple Dumplings are also a good idea.

Apple Dumplings

Pastry for a double pie crust ( I use boxedwith this recipe, the already rolled out kind would just have to be re-rolled)
6 baking apples, peeled and cored
6 Tablespoons sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
raisins if desied
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons butter or margerine

Heat oven to 400. Roll pie pastry to 18x12 inch rectangle. Cut into 6 Six-inch squares. Place apples on pastry squares. In small bowl, combine 6 tablespoons sugar, cinnamon & nutmeg; spoon about 1 tablespoon in the cavity of each apple. Spoon a ffew raisins on top. Moisten edges of pastry. Bring up corners to top of apple; pinch edges together. Place dumplings in ungreased 9 X 13 in pan. In small saucepan heat brown sugar, water and margerine to boiling; pour over dumplings. Bake @ 400 for 30-40 min or until apples are tender. Serve warm.

Waenfalathiel, You could make the leaf brooches and give them as party favors. They'd look nice on the table.

Yes, I got the "gourmet hobbit" on someone's reccomendation. It was cheapest on the Amazon "z-shops"

I don't know, they've changed the lay-out of the site. Maybe a search of the Authors name will turn something up. His name is Frank Kiefer (he is also, incidentally, the seller).
