Re: What race would you be?

I think I'd stay right as I am now. Being a Hobbit wouldn't be bad, but I wouldn't like being that short. Being an Elf, well it would be good, but the concept of forever boggles my mind. Being a Dwarf wouldn't be bad, either but I'd be short. Ents are too lonely, even by my standards.

Re: What race would you be?

I would have to say that, without a doubt, I would be of elven-kind. Look at the advantages. Imortality. Passing from the circles of the world when you grow tired of it. Re-incarnation for those untimely accidents like running with scissors and what not. Living alongside the Gods in Valinor. Being surpassingly fair. The few disadvantages are way off set by the obvious advantages.

I suppose that "Vala" isn't an option?

I wouldn't like to be an ent forever, but for a limited period of time (say, a week) it'd be great. It'd be nice to do everything slowly, not rushing around like everyone else does.

Surely, Feanor, elves are bound to the circles of the world, until the end of Arda? That's the reason why I prefer mortality.

I agree on the wanting to be a wizard comment. That would be interesting. If not, elf is my 2nd choice, since they love song and verse so much.

Re: Race

I'd be Man, preferably descended from Hurin's side of the House of Hador.
You see Men are mortal; they leave the world when they die to be one with Eru. They do not live forever, but instead have the gift of Death, 'that even the Powers shall envy ere the End'. Of course, hobbits have that gift too, but they are a little short for my liking.

Elves rule!

I dunno, Gwaihir. Since it is highly likely that elves will become 'one with Eru' too eventually, though not for a long long time (the end of Arda), I think I'd sacrifice the gift of "Death" for an immortal body free of disease and fair 'beyond the measure of men'. *sigh*

I would have liked to be a Ranger, and to have been one of Aragorn's buddies.

I like the idea of roaming Middle Earth while helping protect the Shire, hunting for Gollum etc...

Re: Who I would have been..

I voted MAN on the assumption that Magic Men were included.
Elves also appeal for their unique brand of magical insights into mortality and nature and truth and harmony and all, but I wouldn't really fancy running the risk of becoming inescapably immortal....
I reckon Rangers carry a pretty romantic appeal aswell,
if you ignore the fact that they hardly ever change their under-garments.

Yes, but at least hobbits had more chance to change clothes. And they probably wouldn't have gotten as dirty anyway, living in their nice quiet Shire.

Re. What I would have been

I voted an Elf. Elves are the most fair, can somewhat communicate with thier minds, can do magic, make lovely music and are adored by all the other races.
My second choice would be a Maia, the ability to shape shift is very nifty. I wouldn't choose Maia over elves tho because I just love Elves and think they are the most wonderful race.
Elves can become like men and not be bound to Arda as Luthien and Arwen show. I suppose Arwen is a better example because Luthien had to sing to Mandos for her mortallity. btw what did Arwen do to have this or am I reading the book wrong.

I like the elves, but the thing about being immortal kinda scares me off. I don't think I want to live for thousands of years.
I think I would like to be a hobbit, because they don't worry that much and are always happy...

Re: What I would have been

I too said elf. Primarily because they were the most relaxed, care free of the races. But also, they were more in tune with nature, immortal (if that's a good thing or not is another story), strongest of mind, more knowledgeable, most artful. Sounds great to me.

Hobbit or prehaps Dwarf

When I started this strain I said hobbit but now I think dwarves are nice too (I dunno why but I seem to be drawn to short folks) Hobbits are so peaceful and live in the pleasent sunshine and are very cheery. On the other hand dwarves are craftsmen and live in the dark torch lit halls of carven stone and can be very ill tempered. Kinda like the two sides of me, really depends on what day you catch me on. As for elves, love 'em just don't like immortaility and honestly, I don't like popularity. I'd rather be unknown than be praised, I dunno why but that's me.

Dwarves

dwarves are really cool, that would have been my second choice. but to stubborn and hot tempered, not to mention short.

the reason i would choose dwarves would have to be for their huge and beautiful mansions and great craftmenship, i would have forged me some really kickass armor and weapons. i guess that is why my favorites beside turin and tuor are aule, the noldor, and eol

My second choice would be an elf. They make enchanting music and they live in their own beautiful world which can't be snatched from them even when they're in trouble. Legolas lived in that world even when he was with Aragorn and Gimli.

Re: What race would you be?

Could it be anything but elf? Immortality, although it would eventually go weary...think of the possiblities. Millenia would pass before you - the knowledge and wisdom you could acquire! ARGH! I'm still here. Damn. Hobbits are happy though, the Shire is nice and 130 odd years for a long-lived one isn't bad. Dwarves live longer, and they have all the riches...but I'd get a bit claustrophobic all cramped up in the center of a mountain. Ents..nope. I couldn't stand being a tree. Boooooring. Elves rule.

Re: Hmmm

Although most would suspect me of being an elf, Im starting to lean mroe and mroe towards being a hobbit... although the elves are quite the merry folk, I think living for such a long time would eventually become rather dreary, having to see good friends leave time and time again.... whereas hobbits are sill a very merry folk (although with their exceptions as well *cough* Sackville-baggins *cough*) and a pretty long lifetime (by our standards) as well... I think I would prefer being a hobbit.. not much o worry about living nice and cozy in the Shire blowing smokerings all over ME.. yeah thats the life Not to say that I wouldnt mind being an elf, but the lifespan of a hobbit is more to my liking.

I'm convinced that I'm at least half Hobbit. I'm shorter than all my friends, have curly brown hair, like meals, and
I don't like to have anything to do with noisy machines. Plus, the Shire sounds like absolute PARADISE to me.
I'd be a Hobbit, and nothing else.

I took an Elvish name, but I, deep down, am a Hobbit inside! Since they are certainly an offshoot of Men, it's not really that far a stretch.

What could be better than the idyllic community of the Shire, with nothing worse to worry about than invitations to Birthday Parties? (Except occasional Adventures!)

The finer things of life!

That's what being a hobbit is all about!

You can keep your dwarvish avarice, your elvish dooms, your mannish folly!

What could I be but an Elf? Others here (and you know who you are) have said they feel more akin to a Hobbit, but didn't Samwise yearn to hear tales of Elves? To live and laugh and sing and dance (yes, and eat and drink..where's that Bot?)in Rivendell for a time, however fleeting, would be grand indeed. Come on over and visit, you Hobbits! Dwarves have their own beauty, and just because they love things of gold does not mean they are heartless. I, myself, would be of the elven. They are pretty much everything I want to be: wise, fair, long-lived, respected, and uncannily whimsical. Of course, like any race, they have their downpoints. On the whole, though, I would rather be among those who love music, verse, nature, and languages.

Dwarves are the best! Sure, they're not tall or pretty, but they have pretty much everything else going for them. I would go so far as to say that Dwarves were better linguists than the Elves!

Ent! Ent! How come so few people say Ent? I love Ents! Good at languages, have their own very good language, names that are stories, trees (I love trees), slow, long lived, good, not greedy...
I'm very musical and I love singing, so maybe Elf - but I like Ents best. Ent first choice, then Elf, then I guess Maia.

What race ???

A first I said Elf staright away but come to think of it each race has its good points.
Elves are just way cooler and laidback (and they get to hangaround with the big guys ie. Valar)

Dwarves get to grasp loadz of gold and expensive stuff that I like quite a bit

Humans don't have to worry about that pesky 'foreverness' and some get to be Rangers who are just so....hardman lookin, like gelled hair, billowing long black coat.... that sort of thing

Ents are pretty cool cos they have that drink of theirs.

Hobbits are great cos they eat, eat, eat and did I mention EAT !!!!

From any of the others i'd like to be a Maia, little responsibilities like cleanin Manwe's shoes but powers of shapechanging and such !

This is hurtin my head, I just can't choose. I'm gonna have to go and lie down. I knew this thinkin thing wasn't good for me..LOL

What race?

It would be nice to be Sylvan (I don't know what has come over me, but hopefully it will pass...) for a while. To live in the forests, sheltered from the outside world under the eaves of Eryn Lasgalen ('Mirkwood') before, during, or after it's darkness. For the halls of the Elvenking were a merry affair, and there would be much feasting, and drinking, and merry making, for elves they were and remain, and that is Good People. And where they maintained their realm the forest was green (a very dark shade of green, but green none-the-less) and pleasant, and no evil things abided.

"Their Oath shall drive them, and betray them, and ever snatch away the very treasures they sought to pursue."

What race would I be?

I would be a hobbit. I find them to be very appealing. I love the way they make even the thought of the possibility of getting a meal so appealing. They seem to be very down to earth. Plus I like that they have never intentionally killed another hobbit, at least not those in the Shire or Bree. I would like to live in either the Shire or in Bree. To me, the hobbits on their journey up through Bree is the most enjoyable part of LotR.

I think I should have clarified this, but when I said Numenorean, I was thinking more of the Black Numenoreans.

Immortality. Sure the concept is scary at first, but you get used to it! I mean death is a gift??? Well I guess in a way it is, but if you look very carefully it only said death. It did not say that your Fea (or soul for those not as proficiant in Elvish) does not live forever. Just your body dies, as far as I can tell the whateverthepluralof'Fea' is of both men and elves lives on. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong or not making any sense.

Re: What race would you be?

I'd want to be a dwarf. Why? I'd have dwarves for friends. I've always wanted to hang out with those guys... stay up all night drinking, telling stories around a campfire. Of course, elves and men could do that too, but dwarves are the best craftsmen, the strongest endurance and the highest tolerance for pain. Not to mention the beards. Those are just too cool. Dwarves all the way, man.

Re: What race would you be?

I am inspired by the race of man on middle earth. They did a great deal of the actual fighting. And they are a symbol of strength, superiority and determination. I like all of the other races, especially elves. But the elves were known as mysterious and secret. The men of Middle Earth are the up front bold type, who stands up to challenge the forces of darkness head to head.

A Hobbit here!! Nothing would make me anything else, except maybe because I'm close to nature (like elves) but hobbits are too. ahh, a simple life, always laughing, nothing to worry about, not messed up in all those big matters away south! and being little wouldn't worry me, because everyone around me would be little as well, so it wouldn't be any difference

Moreover i believe that a long, deep grief and an endless mourning accompany Dwarves throught thei lives, They can fierce warriors and yet so noble kings with heroic deed that are kept secret, shining pride for this indeed glorious race. I would probably be a human.
Reason: They seem less tied to fate. Elves and Dwarves seem locked into the way that they lead life. Their form seem more malable (sp?). Look at what the humans who had the rings became. I would study magic and learn the extent of the power I could wield and then, being human, with a more malable form would transcend that form smilies/evil.gif. Or mayhap I could acquire on of the human rings and slowly gain the powers of the Ringwraiths and hopefully (but most likely not) stay focused enough not to fall into league with Sauron.

I'd give the third finger on my right hand to be a hobbit. I've wanted to be a hobbit for as long as i can remember. I can't imagine that the shortness would be a problem as you wouldn't even realize it if you stayed in the Shire your whole life. If i couldn't be a hobbit i would be a dawrf. Well, what to say? I would like to be a ringwraith.. or maybe an orc.. No, acctually I would like to be an elf, but so many people has allready said that so I wanted to say something more originally.. ^_^ acctually, when I checked up "what where you in ME" with my real name it said that I was an irritating black rider.. so maybe that is my destiny? I can't say that I hate being mean, but on the other hand, deep down inside of me, I would never acctually want to KILL someone.. at least that is what I'm saying to myself.. *ahem* so, onwards: I guess my choice would be a ringwraith, or something else, as long as I could be evil.. otherwise I would be an elf.. as almost everybody else.. ^_^

I was told that I was a "Revered Druadan"-since I have no idea what that means (although to be revered is an attractive idea), I already said I'd rather be an Elf-for quite obvious reasons, not the least of which is Legolas' company. If I can't be an elf, I think I would find use for myself in the Old Forest...
But an "irritating" Black Rider? Hmmm. So you don't kill, you just go around and crack your knuckles?

I would never enjoy being imortal.. at least not as a human, or an elf that liked humans and wanted to become friends with them. And you know why? You get to know them, you have lots of fun with them (ok, not that bad this far) but after just a merely hundred years they die.. sometimes even sooner.. and then you feel terrible and miss them, but then you will meet someone new, and then they die as well.. I can see why elves sometimes seem so cool against the mortals.. oh, yeah.. just read that "warg" thingy.. I'm from sweden, and in swedish, wolf is varg.. Tolkien borrowed most his words from Finnish and Welsh(?) I think, but some scandinavian words as well.. I guess warg will be among them, right? Or am I just waaay to patriotic?

Valar and Maiar are cool because they are all powerful and can shape-change... people worship them and some of them are the very kool wizards....

Dwarves create things and have a love of Gold and jewels etc... I collect semi-precious stones so....

Dunadan are kool because they travel, they are strong and noble, and they do not have to live forever.

Hobbits are good because they live a relaxed and peaceful life, not worrying (much) and always having fun.

The Ents live a nice slow life, with a beautiful flowing language. They life areound trees, are also immortal, and they have great strength and wisdom.

The elves are beautiful and wise. They are masters of music, lore and languages. They are close to nature and live harmoniously with their environment, and some of them are close to the Valar and maiar.

They each have their advantages and disadvantages, but most of all i would like to be an elf because i am a great fan of wisdom, music, lore, languages and nature.

I would be an elf. the whole concept of never having B.O, never dying, and being able to tootle off to Valinor when you get fed up with the world should really suit most people. and the whole regal thing. i mean, if you want to abuse your power and beauty, then i respect that, but elves don't. anyway, beauty is a thing that you so scarcely find on this earth that an entire race of drop-dead-gorgeous intellectuals would be such a cool thing to live around. hoom hom, and the fact that quenya is, with-out doubt, the most beautiful language ever invented, followed closely by sindarin, also helps. but hoom hom, that's just my opinion.

I don't understand those of you who would take a life. Life is the most precious gift given to us, and I support those who would protect it.

As for me, I've always wanted to be of the faerie folk (though I'm 16, I'm still a little girl at heart!), and elves would always be my first choice! They are NOT immortal, though some may think so. Eventually, and yes, EVENTUALLY, they would die of old age. after maybe 50 million years, but they WOULD. . .eventually. But anyways, it was really cool, 'cause when I was in Timmins for a Karate Tournament, I took my friend (ONLY friend) Eric to see LOTR, and he called me Elfie forever after that because I look like an Elf! What a compliment! Anyways, I'm enchanted by their connections with Nature (the Wood Elves, of which I would BE one if I was alive in Middle Earth) and wish I could give life to the dead (or destroyed smilies/mad.gif smilies/frown.gif ) forests of the world, just for the sake of giving life! smilies/rolleyes.gif Aah! Well well...first I thought that this question was an easy one. I've always admired hobbits...(I mean such hobbits as Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Merri and Bilbo.) so brave, so loyal...but when I started thinking about this matter more closely, I understood that being a hobbit would mean more than just these qualities. And honestly, I can't see myself leading a "hobbit-life"!Living in a small, peaceful village, drinking beer and smoking pipe-weed, not being interested in the outer world..., sounds all too boring for me... smilies/wink.gif!
Elves, on the other hand, are somehow too perfect in my opinion. Would'nt it be boring, too, to be so flawless? (But I have to admit that I would LOVE living in Rivendell and I also love music...)
So, finally...I guess I would choose to be a man. Some of the dunedain, perhaps...?

Saurannûn the Wood Elf
11-09-2002, 06:15 PM
Elves are definitely NOT perfect! You know about Dark Elves, and some people make the mistake of thinking Elves are immortal. 1)You can kill them and 2) if they were immortals, what's the cut-off age for their looks to stop changing, and how would they get to that age if they never aged anyways??? Can you answer THAT! Being born immortal, they would be babies forever and completely useless! No age or anything, I can't imagine it! But it probably WOULD take about 50,000 years for them to die of old age, though!

Schmendrick
11-10-2002, 04:32 AM
