Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
I used to do LotR in about a week, but I once ran through it during a long weekend. Probably not the best way to do it. But I am a greedy reader; I read Crime and Punishment the first time in one sitting.

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
I usually push through each book (FotR, TTT. RotK) in about a week, though I have finished it a few times in about half that. I'd say that a month of leisurely reading gets me through my regular routine of The Hobbit followed by LotR.

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
Like galpsi, I am a "greedy reader" and will read straight through a book I like once I begin it--even if it takes all night. (Can't say I was able to survive Crime & Punishment in one sitting though) The good thing is I finish LOTR in 2-3 days -- the bad thing is I have to wait for a free weekend or take days off work.

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
Yeah, but the great thing about reading too quickly is I can't possibly absorb everything very effectively, so there's still plenty of significance in the book that I miss and which remains available for the next time I read it. I can never get away with reading anything for school less than twice because of my sieve-like mind.

Less than two readings if you treat the book normally.
A dozen times or more if you treat it like I do.

My record for the 3 LOTR is one week. I can usually polish off The Hobbit in half a day. However, no matter how many times I read The Silmarillion, I can never breeze through it because I'm always looking up characters in the appendix.

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
For all you guys out there reading the LOTR in one day, one weekend or even one week.
If you read it in one day or one weekend, you cannot be seriously reading it, you are skimming through the book or only looking for certain paragraphs...... NOT REALLY READING IS IT, COME ON BE TRUE TO TOLKIEN.HE IS WORTH MORE TIME THAN THAT.
For those who have read it in one week, good for you, it must be during a holiday and you cannot have any children for I could not do it any more now that I have a son.
I have read the LOTR in one week before, but do not have the luxury any more to achieve such feat...

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
Of course you are correct that reading @500pp. a day is not the same as stopping to smell the roses of Imloth Melui. But it need not be mere skimming either. I've read the thing so many times that I could concisely summarize the plot -- chapter by chapter -- without reference. And I surely don't meant it as a boast for there must be countless more productive things that a person could have done with their youth, rather than compulsively rereading three books.
Even three really good books.
But LotR reads a good deal faster now than it did the first several times. I only stop now to linger lovingly on particularly favored passages. When I was very young, I always wanted the Frodo-Sam-Gollum passages to just get by so I could return to the "exciting stuff." Now I find those relationships among my favorte parts of the book. Gracious Gamegie, wait until the second day to tell us we don't take the book seriously, just for form's sake.

My dear wise Galpsi, I did not mean my comment in any rude way, I would not dare . As you know this is my first day on the board.
I understand that having read it many times, you only need to read particular chapters to feel the LOTR effect.
I wonder what are your favorite passages?
Mine are too many to mention but I like the passage when Strider leads the hobbits through the wilderness, to the ford, and when they reach the trolls place. I don't know why I like it but I have the whole chapter maped out in my mind.

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
That's funny, galpsi, because I used to practically skip the boring Sam and Frodo parts when I was younger (after the first 2 or 3 reads). I wanted fights and fire! Now I pick and choose which parts I want to savor, and those very section that dragged on for me when I was a kid are often the ones I enjoy the most.

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
I used to skip all the battles when I'd reread it because what compelled me, besides Tolkien's writing style itself, was the confrontation of good and evil within and between the individuals. The battle's were awfully boring. I found nothing heroic and noble about mass killing. Necessary or unavoidable, but not entralling. Perhaps that's a "chick-thing." I didn't enjoy being dragged to all the Civil War battlefields in my home state either. After all some sage once quipped "Men go to war because they can not go through childbirth." ;-)

Quote:
I understand that having read it many times, you only need to read particular chapters to feel the LOTR effect.

You still misunderstand me a little. I always read it cover to cover when I read it, though I haven't read it since the mid-eighties. Now I never much crack it unless I want to quote a bit verbatim.
But in answer, I seem lately to be relishing the same bits as the preceding posters. I still idly imagine some battle-sequences, but I prefer almost anything with Sam.

I read The Silmarillion in about a week.

-----------------------------------------------------
My youth was equally mis-spent. Not only did my friends and I compulsively re-read the books, we used to sit around and see who could recite the most verbatim. How tragic is *that*! Ah well, I still got enough out of college to get a day job, not to mention some valuable ethics lessons that come in handy there.

I once read the LOTR in about a week... 5 days on the FotR (fitting it in around school) then the other two books on the weekend (reading all day and giving myself a headache). The Hobbit - about one day, the Silmarillion - about a month. I spend too much time looking things up in the appendices to actually read the book.

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
I have read the sil LoTR and The Hobbit all on The plane From Melbourne (Australia) to London it took me 16 hours and my Mum kept telling me to rest or I would be grumpy all day she couldn't have been more right. That was my second time for the Hobbit and LoTR but first for Sil and I recalled more from that reading than the first when I took two days (not at school) to read it. I was seven then.

as a very slow reader, I enjoy so much...
Hello dear fellows!
As a French, I have recently discovered Tolkien and I m reading the LOTR in English. I have decided to do so for more authenticity and upgrading of my language skills...
I have always been a slow reader, so I let you imagine how slow I can read in English...but what a cheerful and spellbinding process! I even re-read some passages twice or three times to enhance the spell and emotions.
I am definitely not a fast-reader, but even if I had the ability to be so, I would still read at the same pace.
It is 3 weeks I have been reading regularly (working, I can only open the book in the evening) and I have read only 180 pages. It's just the beginning of the LOTR, when Strider and the Hobbits have just noticed black riders in the far, and fling themselves to the ground, behind the stone ring...The exciting thing is that I have two contradictory feelings: For sure, i desperately need to read forward, but I am afraid to finish the story!!!
During the day, at work, I feed my imagination and dreams with pictures that I can grab in the Internet. It increases all the more my desire to read...but the pace remains the same!
I am definitely slow and my way to the Mount Doom will be long...very long.
Bye dear you!
Dagelur

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
Usually about a week for a complete reread of LoTR due to work and a day for the Sil. Same for the Hobbit. I have all of HoME, but still can only deal with it in gulps. Read most of at least once, parts more often.
The slowest I ever read any of the books was the first time I read LoTR. At six. And here I thought it would be more adventures of Bilbo. Took me all summer, and I don't think I did much else. Except keep looking at my feet and wonder when the hair would start coming in. My mother remembers that as a fairly quite year

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
I have done it in a day many times. I have read LOTR 14 times and counting...At a leisurely pace I can read it in 16 hours and not miss a single word, even re-reading my favourite parts. As for speed reading Gamgie, well, I can do 2000 words per minute- and that's reading everything. It does take a LOT of effort and is less enjoyable so I don't do that too often. I agree, it is worth taking the time, but some people can naturally read fast. One day I'll memorise it...

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
It has been about 3 years since I first started at The Hobbit and LOTR. I had always wondered what the books were about because they had been sitting on my dads bookcase for a LONG time. I have the old versions where the books are black, green, and red: Made by Ballantine Books (With some amazing Cover Art). When I first started The Hobbit, I read so slowly that I got the picture of every sentence in my head, and I am very glad I did. I can read the book fast, but I find that when I read slow, by myself, in dead quiet, my imagination works much better and I really see things as Tolkien describes them. It took me about 3 days of 6 hours reads to almost finish The Hobbit.
Now, you must understand why this was so fascinating to me. I was 12, and I had never read 1 book on my own in my life. I thought they were the most boring things ever. But when I read The Hobbit, I began to like reading. My parents were pretty amazed to say the least. But one day, when I was still reading The Hobbit, my mom stopped me from reading to go do some chore. It really ****ed me off that for the first time I had ever read a book, my parents would stop me for that. So, I made a big mistake, and stopped reading. Soon enough my anger at my mom would have been gone, but then I started playing the computer, and was hooked. I got so into playing games like Diablo 2, that I set aside reading altogether for more than 6 months. Im sure if my mom had known that would happen she wouldnt have stopped me, but she payed for it by me being so obsessed with playing Computer games that I barely left my room.
But eventually I came back to The Hobbit and read it just as slowly as I had before. And that is why I love The Hobbit so much.. Even when I read it fast now, I can see everything in my mind. But, I have to say, that when I read it fast, I sometimes will read a paragraph and then the next minute will have forgotten what I had read.. and that is really bad. So now I read really slowly, and by myself when I can. I would suggest you do the same.
And as for reading LOTR.. It usually takes me about a month and a half to read it through. And I have read it and The Hobbit 3 times through now. Just starting the Sillmarillion. After that, I dont know what book would be best for me to read, The History of The Middle Earhth or Unfinished Tales.
P.S.: Sorry I wrote so much, but Im a fast typer and sometimes I can get caught up and not realize how much Im writing All my time being a computer-geek has made me a nice typer.

Re: what's the fastest time you've ever read LOTR
Gandalf, you should read UT first, because it gives you more detailed accounts of events mentioned in LotR, The Hobbit and Sil.
I can read the Hobbit in two days, LotR in a week, and Silmarillion in about 3 days. I took me Half a year to read BoLT 1, but I got interested in other things so it took me a while. I can't believe somebody can read as fast a hegemonmatt, how do you remember what you just read? I guess I just like to savor the books and read them slowly to make them last longer, and to take in the information little by little. 73 times, amazing!!!!!!!!!

I usually don't read that fast, unless I feel like it. I usually get through The Hobbit-LotR-The Silmarillion in about a month and a half. But I can read The Hobbit in a day if I want.

Interesting Question
It's been years since I've read the whole trilogy+ straight through. Every once in a while I'll browse through a chapter or two, especially recently with the movie coming out soon.
The Hobbit was the third real book that I ever read (after Tom Sawyer and White Fang) when I was about ten. It took me a whole summer in my off hours at camp to get through it - incidentally the same summer I learned how to play D&D. The two played off of each other quite well.
I tried reading the Lord of the Rings shortly thereafter, but I must admit it was hard going. I basically gave up around Helm's Deep six months later.
I took another shot at it when I was in High School and I absolutely loved it. Don't remember how long it took. I've probably read the whole series completely about half a dozen times.
The best was when I was in the Peace Corps. I was posted in a large town and had access to a large library of English print books. There was a month long period in which I was "between" jobs (I was a teacher and the teachers were on strike). I spent nearly the entire month hanging out in a hunting lodge on the edge of town that was popular with French tourists. It was like something out of a Bogart film. I easily read fifty books that month. One day when no one else was around I started reading at about 9 AM and blasted my way through the Hobbit, LOTR and about half of the Sil for good measure. The best part was that it was hippo migration season, so I enjoyed the periodic spectacle of herds of hippos floating down the Charay River. Not a bad way to pass a day.

I really don't read fast, and it doesn't bother me one bit. I like the fact that it takes a few weeks(2-3) for me to read LOTR. I least I knew that the first time that I read it, when I went to bed with all those thoughts running through my brain, that in the morning the book would still be there with the answers that I seeked. If I read it in a day or two, I wouldnt have much to look forward too, without picking up a new book and starting fresh.
Reading "The Hobbit" seems alot easier to read then other Tolkien books, so I can usually spend a few days on it. Like I said above it usually takes a few weeks for the LOTR. And I just finished reading the Siml, and it has taken me about a month. I find the book, absolutely fascinating. I usually re-read chapters, everytime a question "popped" into my head about a fellows name or history.
I guess if I could devote days and days of reading, it wouldnt take that long. But with family and work and all the good things in life, sometimes reading gets pushed aside. But I think I will always take my time when it comes to reading, savoring all the sweet things. I am looking forward to reading much more of Tolkiens works, and it seems it will take quite some time(maybe even a few years), but thats quite all right with me!
But one thing now that I have to look forward to after finishing or even in the middle of a Tolkien book, is this wonderful forum, which brings many new/old answers and questions to my mind!

well...I got in the habit of reading books when I was very little so I'm a fast reader. It's the school holidays and, in between everything else, I've read LOTR in three days...the Sil is a lot harder going!
With anything pertaining to Middle Earth I like to read slowly and make sure I'm not missing anything smilies/smile.gif It also has the virtue of simply prolonging the experience...in LOTR my favourite passages are probably those that are descriptive of character, Ithilien and the dialogue between Eowyn and Faramir smilies/smile.gif

Hi all, I shall make my first post about my introduction to the books. Time 1967, long weekend before finals at small lib-arts school mid Pen. Recieve in mail from estranged aunt all 4 books previous weekend. Read the Hobbit leasurely through the week. Then on friday began LOTR. Didn't stop. Crashed in the morning but continued few hours latter. Finished the books Monday morning and was 15 - 20 miniuts late to first exame The Only Time I ever did that. I am a relitively slow reader and I tend to subvocalize and concetrate so hard that I am "there". Absolutely no skipping or skimming for me. As a rule I do very little rereading so the movie was wanderful because the details had faded enough to be no distraction. Looking forward to sharing ideas. Hi, I am new to this board and to LOTR. I am 23, an yes, this is the first time that I have read the books. I started LOTR on Sat Jan 27 and I finished Monday Feb 4.
All I can say is that I wish I had read them sooner. I normaly devour books, I can read a 350 page book in about 6 hrs. But the depth of these books are amazing. I started reading early middle ages stuff in college in British Lit class. I fell in love with Beowulf, Sir Gawain, and King Arthur's Court.

I usually read fast. But when i was younger, my dad gave me the Hobbit for one christmas, and i tried to get into the book 3 different times, and i couldnt finish it. After seeing the movie, i decided to try it and my coworker who was nutso over the LOTR lent me the hobbit and i finally finished it but it took me few weeks for me to finish it tho. Then i went to get 3 in one volume book(I m cheap :P~) and i m now in the 6th chapter i think, it s really fast read for me! I work nowadays, so i dont read as much i used to. but it does make me want to read in one sitting smilies/smile.gif i think to finish the whole 3 books, it ll take me a month at most.

I can still remember getting the beautiful white and green Ballantine edition in 1973 for Christmas. (I had checked the first volume out of the school library.) I read the next two volumes in two days, dragging it with me to all the relatives' houses, reading far into the night with a flashlight. I'm sure my parents regretted ever getting me the thing.
Couldn't do that now. For one thing, I never bury my nose in a book now when company is around.

I have a slight problem in that when I start reading a book I can't stop until I run out of words. To that end, I read the Hobbit, and the trilogy in about 36 hours. I followed with the Silmarillion, but that really needs concentration so that took me another day. I was in bed with flu at this time though!

I remember reading 'The Hobbit' when I was around 17. I remember it being in my older brother's bookcase (an actual 60's hippie) but I didn't read it until I was around 17 and had been indulging in 'Old Toby' for a year or two. I remember telling my brother I had read The Hobbit, and he said 'ah, now you have to read LoTR!' I had no idea what he was talking about, but I started reading FoTR a few days later. I know I finished the three books in less than a week.
I read them now, on avg, once a year, usually in the fall. That is when I first read it, and I seem to go into a LoTR spell around the date of Bilbo and Frodo's birthdate (Sept 22). This last time I read them, I just read bits and pieces over 4 months leading up to the movie. I mean, rather than sitting down and devouring 100+ pages, I'd just read 20 or 30. I just finished RoTK a few weeks ago, and am now reading 'Unfinished Tales.'

Hmmm...I'm a pretty fast reader and also very obsessed...I think my best (I've read LOTR 5 times...) was one day. It was during the summer...I'd already read it twice...it was pretty easy going for me. When I say a day..I mean like 20 hours...in a row...I even read on my way to the kitchen and bathroom. No kidding! I think the Hobbit, nowadays, takes me about half a day of obsessibe compulsive reading, like two if I'm being normal and don't have school or work. I'm reading the Silmarillion now, but I'm in the middle of a grueling semester. Yuck. So it's taking me a long time. *sigh* But I really love it. My goal is to have read everything by Tolkien and on Tolkien by next December. Wish me luck! There's a lot!

OK, back to the topic at hand. I read LOTR and the Hobbit in four days, though I really read the Hobbit in two or three hours, and RotK in three or four. The other two were read amongst various activities throughout the weekend. If I had the chance again I could probably read the whole thing in two days. (mm, project for next summer's road trip) The Silmarillion took me a couple of months(like 4 or 5) because I stopped halfway through due to the "there is so much going on I can't keep half of it straight!" syndrome. I finished the other half in less than a week.
Now it takes me a long time to finish the books, I started the Fellowship at the end of may, and I am still not done with TTT!

If you look way back to the first page, you'll see an entry by someone named "hegemonmatt". That is, indeed, me.
I forgot to mention I read a book prior to reading the trilogy called "Photoreading" which I then tested out on LotR. It involves certain techniques that allow you to read most (or, if you're really good, all) of a page in about 5 seconds, and still remember everything on it. That's why I was able to read it so fast. However, it puts a lot of stress on the mind and eyes, so I don't do that unless it's for cramming.

I am not a speed reader, so the best I've ever done is read about a chapter a day, which is a little over two months. That's how long it takes me every year... a little over two months. Which makes it quite a commitment to read it every year. I wouldn't say I'm a slow reader, but I like to take everything in, especially in LOTR. I take time to enjoy it, usually reading the poems silently or singing them in my head, then singing them out loud. Sometimes in the middle of a book I'll just stop and think about it. I like to be able to feel like I've been there and seen it all, like I've travelled wiht these characters and spoken with them and helped them along the way. I take my time to enjoy it, and if I miss anything I go back and read the whole paragraph again. So I can read fairly fast, but I don't speed read.
